What Remains

This week, bestselling romance author Julie Garwood passed away. While her family has the memories and love, we —her fans— have her books. And I love her books, especially her historical romance novels.

Her books have a few spots on my keeper shelf with broken spines, crinkled covers, and yellowing pages. From The Bride to Ransom, I read her books over and over, always laughing out loud and turning each page enjoying each word. And when I read the last word and close the book, I feel happy, with a smile on my face, having had a great, entertaining time even though I know the stories inside and out.

As an author, those feelings are all we can leave our readers. We yearn for nothing more than to entertain, and help you escape. We’re no different than rock stars or movie stars, but we authors are most likely introverts.

Farewell, Julie Garwood. Thank you for sharing your talent and stories.

To all the other authors out there tapping away with their works, I say thank you. Please keep turning them out.

Judging a Book by it's Cover with @TabithaBlake of Safari Heat Book Tours #RB4U #Romance

We have all heard don’t judge a book by its cover and it’s a quaint notion but not very realistic. Your cover is the first impression of your story. And we all know we don’t get a second chance for a first impression. So no matter how great your book is if the cover is bad then readers assume the writing probably will be too. Not really fair I know…but most things in life aren’t. So let's talk about what can be done to avoid this and make readers buy your book faster than they can blink an eye. Remember this…a cover is the window to the soul of your book.

Your cover should flow seamlessly and provoke some kind of emotion from the reader. Maybe it’s the sexy couple on the cover that elicits a reaction…or the very odd or unique design that catches their eye. Whether the cover warms their hearts or makes them sweat with one glance, doesn’t really matter but make sure something jumps off that cover that makes readers take notice. You need to make the reader want to know more…they should feel the need to read your blurb. That is the hook or at least the first one. The second is a good blurb but that is a blog for another time. It’s just worth mentioning.

A cover needs to convey the feel and theme of your book.  If you write sweet romances then light colors and a romantic fade over the cover will portray this mood. In just a glance the reader gets the basic idea of the story. The feel good and lighthearted mood resonates with the reader. If you write on the darker side I suggest darker colors and racier couples show this isn’t going to be a sweet fairytale. Darker colors and sexy couples give the book a sexier, more erotic feel to titillate the reader.

One thing that is very important is to never confuse the reader. If you have a sweet cover it better be a sweet story or vise-versa. This will come back to haunt you…usually in a review that says they were confused by what the cover portrayed and what the story was actually about. Yes I know there are blurbs and in a perfect world readers would stop and read them but this isn’t always the case. Most shop visually. So an eye-catching cover is key to getting their attention. The way I see it, as a cover artist, is I hook them for you and you keep them hooked with an amazing story.

A visually stunning cover will have your books flying off the shelve. What makes a stunning cover? Well like any art form the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But there are a few things to keep in mind when designing a cover. These are basic ideas that have come from readers I polled. It was quite interesting to find out what they like. After all isn’t that what we are always wondering? Please the reader and sell more books. Let's take a look and see.

The first thing readers said was that a cover is very important in their purchasing decisions.

What readers liked:
Easy to Read Fonts
Bold Colors
Characters that Fits Author’s Description
Clean and Simple Design

What they didn’t like:
Fancy, Hard to Read Fonts
Light Colors that Fade in Thumbnail
Hard to See Pics in Thumbnail
Characters on the Cover Don’t Match the Author’s Description

Now please don’t panic and think you need to run out and change your cover. If it is selling then the cover is working for your. Remember even readers break their own rules when a cover is well done. Now if you are having trouble with sales I recommend asking others for an honest opinion on your cover. If it gets good reviews I would leave it just as it is. Now if it gets negative reactions or unsure reactions then I would rethink the cover.

The cover is the lifeblood of your book. A cover can make or break a book. Be sure and get the best and most accurate cover you can for your story. Not every cover is created equally. And something else to think about…you don’t need to spend a fortune to get an amazing cover.

I will mention one thing to watch out for…premade covers that are sold multiple times. I make premades but once they sell then they are taken down and not sold again. It is already bad enough that there is no guarantee that another author won’t have the same stock photo on their cover. But at least guarantee someone won’t have the same exact design. Too many authors buy covers that will be sold thousands of times. Don’t fall into this trap. It will get you looked over. And that is never a good thing.

Remember when working with a cover artist they can’t read your mind. Be very descriptive on what you want and don’t want. You can never give too much info in my opinion. Be sure your cover artist is listening to what you want. But also listen to your cover artist. We generally know what is selling and what isn’t going to work. And don’t be afraid to go a different direction than you first thought. Be open-minded and let your designer use their creativity to make your cover shine. It is a give and take relationship with your cover artist. I respect all my authors and listen to their thoughts and ideas. No one knows your story better than you. But hire a great cover artist and watch as they make your thoughts and dreams come to life before your very eyes.

Don’t forget to let your cover artist know up front about any deadline. They get very busy and have clients ahead of you. So make sure they can meet your timeframe. This will take a lot of stress off of you and your cover artist. They know what is expected and you know they will have the cover to you on time. And I recommend you don’t ask for the cover the day you publish it. Things happen and sometimes things just don’t go the way we want them to. So I would have to cover at least a week before your release if at all possible. This just gives you a safety net.

Finally you need to love the final product. Not like it or it’s okay. That shouldn’t be satisfactory with you or your cover artist. You should feel like you can’t share it with others fast enough. You know that feeling you got when you found the right wedding gown or had your first child? It should feel similar. Some would say like the first child? Yes this is your baby. You created it and edited it and put blood, sweat and tears into it…so yeah its very similar. Now it is time to release it into the world and hope everyone loves it as much as you do.

Hope this helped with some of the cover dilemmas we all face as authors. I am open to questions on anything cover related. Even if I didn’t cover the topic here.

Don’t forget to check out my cover sale going on right now. Scroll down for more info and a link to my site.

A huge thanks goes out to Marianne for having me. It was a lot of fun ladies. Always is. Hope to do it again soon.

Three Tips to Promote Your Book(s) Without Driving Away Readers #RB4U @NNP_W_Light

You’ve just published a book. Congratulations! You’ve done something that many have tried and few have succeeded. Give yourself a pat on the back… then put on your thinking cap. It’s time for the next step: promoting your book.
Book promotion is something most authors dread. I get that and I’m here to help. Being an author myself, I know how overwhelming it is to sell and market your book. In today’s publishing market, both traditional and indie authors are expected to promote and be active on social media.
Romance Books 4 Us asked me to share some book promotion tips with you today. Who am I? My name is Mrs. N and I’m the co-owner of N. N. Light Author Promotions. I’m a social media marketer by trade and I have the social media reach of over thirty-million. I’ve been in the book industry for over twenty-six years and I specialize in matching books to readers. In addition, I’m the author of three books (with more on the way) and I firmly believe in authors helping authors succeed.
Below are my three tried-and-true tips to promoting your book(s) without alienating readers. The key to effective book promotion is to balance selling of your wares and connecting with your followers/readers.

Tip #1: Be a real live person. In the digital age, robots and automation are everywhere. Don’t be a talking billboard on social media. Don’t scream at the top of your lungs, “BUY MY BOOK! BUY MY BOOK! BUY MY BOOK!” Instead, connect with your followers and take an actual interest in their lives. Say hello and talk about things that interest you.
When I first joined Twitter, I had no followers. I started following people who shared similar interests. I soon had a following and made connections. I built a trust with my followers and laid a foundation that’s more valuable than money. Sure, it was a slow process but these same followers are still with me today.
Love to bake, shop, hunt, travel or another hobby? Talk about it online. Intersperse news about your writing and books with what you like to do in your free time. Your following will soon grow and readers will connect with you, the person.

Tip #2: Pick three social media outlets and be consistent. Every day, a new social media outlet pops up. It’s hard to keep up. I mean, who has time to tweet, pin, facebook, tsu, post pics on Instagram, etc.? I surely don’t. Readers want consistency so here’s my advice: pick three social media outlets that work for you. For me, it’s my blog, Twitter and Pinterest. I post to my blog every day (Monday through Friday), tweet 24/7 and add pins to my Pinterest boards at least once a week.
My followers know if they want to connect with me, the first place they do it is Twitter. It’s my go-to platform and I’m always on there. I’m a social butterfly and I love how Twitter is like a global social club. I meet people from all over the world, get news I can’t get elsewhere and connect with people I’m interested in. I can share my thoughts on a topic without having to explain myself. If I have news to share (whether personal or professionally), it goes out to my followers and even strangers (when I use the right hashtags).
My blog is my secret weapon. Secret weapon? Yes! Every day, I create new content online and Google grabs it, sorts it and ranks it. Through SEO (Search Engine Optimization), I’m able to help Google get my writing into the hands of readers. Since I started blogging, my followers have sky-rocketed.
Authors underestimate how powerful a tool a blog is. Not only can you have one place where you can promote your book(s), the more you write, the higher your blog gets ranked by Google. Think about it for a second. Every time you post something on your blog, your writing goes out into the world. If you post twice a week for a whole year, that’s 104 sales pitches for you as a writer and author.
Sales pitches?
Yes, sales pitches. Each time you write a blog post, it’s a sales pitch for someone to read, secretly disguised as an inspirational thought, writing tip, recipe, book review, vacation memories, holiday remembrance, etc. Someone who’s never heard of you will run across your blog post and read your writing.
What happens next will be up to your writing. If your writing inspires/moves the reader, they’ll comment, follow your blog or even check out your book(s).
The best thing about using your blog to showcase your writing is that it’s absolutely free. It doesn’t cost you a thing and the results will astound you.
Remember one important thing about social media: be consistent. No matter what social media platform you use, be consistent. You don’t have to post every day like me. Find what works for you and do it. If it’s only once a week or once every two weeks, that’s fine. Just let your followers know what the schedule is so they’re in the loop. If they think you’ve abandoned them, they’ll leave and won’t come back.

Tip #3: Use graphics in your promotion. Studies show that 76% more readers will click-through to check out your book(s) if a graphic/photo accompanies your blog posts/tweet/update. Readers are visual creatures and one way to pique their interest is to create a quote graphic.
Find a compelling quote that will draw readers in. Create a graphic using one of the many software applications available (Photoshop, Adobe, Canva, etc) and save it to your computer/device. I have a folder with all the graphics I’ve used for my books so it’s easy to post to Twitter/Pinterest/Blog.
I can’t stress this enough, use graphics in Twitter and on your blog. Trust me, you’ll get more readers intrigued with a visual aid than by saying you have a book for sale.
Like the graphic states at the top of this post, it all comes down to trust. Readers will be more likely to buy your book(s) if you have established a connection and they trust you. I’ve built trust as an authentic author/blogger/reviewer and readers trust me when I tell them something is great.
I hope these tips have helped you to see that book promotion is not only essential but fun, too.  You’ve done the hard stuff, writing and publishing the book. Promotion is sharing your writing with the world while building your brand.

Biography: N. N. Light is the husband-wife writing team, commonly known as Mr. N and Mrs. N.
Mrs. N. has been creating stories ever since she was little. Her grandfather remembers when she was two years old, she would stand at the top of the stairs and tell him a story filled with emotion (and in a language foreign to him) with her hands on her hips. Let’s just say she was a born storyteller.
Our mission statement for our books, our promotion business and our life is: Spread the Light.  These three simple words are easy to remember and yet can change the world!  It doesn’t matter what spiritual belief you hold dear, you have the Light inside you.  Kindness, compassion, empathy, encouragement are all attributes of the Light.
In addition to being authors, we’re also book promoters/reviewers, social media marketers/influencers and the owners of N. N. Light Author Promotions. We both love books, have ever since we were young and have the social media reach of over thirty million. Matching up books and readers is something that gives us great pleasure.

A Newsletter Update Means a Unique Opportunity for Readers

I don't know about you, butI have a tendency to forget things. If I don't have a list, or someone to remind me, important things tend to get overlooked.

That's why I think that, as an author, having a newsletter is so important. It allows me to keep in touch with my readers and remind them about important things going on in my writing life. Whether it be a new release, an appearance, or a contest, my subscribers know that they can count on me to get the most current information. Yes, social media and a web presence are important, but with so much competing for our attention, these things can often get missed. I love being able to communicate with my readers via email.

Over the past month, I've been updating and overhauling my newsletter. It has a new look, a new provider, and is a tad more personal. Now, not only do readers get to learn about my professional side, but they learn a little bit more about me. Readers love to feel involved in the writing process, so I'm also starting to introduce polls that will help me get feedback on my books and which series they love most. In addition, adding exclusive contests and free content to my newsletter schedule so that these readers know just how special they are to me.

Sound time consuming? It is, but my readers are important to me, and I think they're worth it. ;) If you want to sign up for my newsletter and join the fun, you can do so here.

How about you? If you're an author, do you use a newsletter? If you're a reader, do you subscribe to any author newsletters? What are some of the most creative things you have seen authors do with their newsletter subscribers? Tell me about it in the comments section. I want to know!

LIVING IN THE NOW

Most of us live in the past or the future.

What about the power of now?

Do you live consciously in the moment or spend much of your time remembering the past or planning the future?

What is your pattern, and how does it affect your writing if you are an author?

Memories of people, places and experiences from the past fill us with regret, nostalgia or delight.

Plans for the future preoccupy our thoughts, whether we are intent on getting a raise, quitting a job, buying a bigger house, a nicer car, or taking an exciting trip.

Do you go through your day in a *present-minded* state of being, focused on what you can positively do and change today?

A disciplined schedule can help you put your time to conscious use. Do you have one?

It's not all grim, serious behavior in the now. Conscious use might mean sitting on the sofa with some dark chocolate and a coffee, listening to birds chirping outside or watching the snow fall, silent and serene.

Here we are in January, the month of new beginnings. A new year stretches before us like a blank canvas. This is the prime time to commit to being more present in your daily life.

In a planetary sense, JANUARY belongs to Saturn. In a mythological sense, JANUARY belongs to Janus.

Saturn governs time, structure, discipline, and learning. Saturn rewards us when we do what we need to do.

Janus is the two headed Roman god that represented a doorway, gateway or threshold. In deeper texts, he is said to be the gateway between Heaven and Earth. Looking in one direction he observes the past, while looking in the other direction he observes the future. He can only see either from the now.

Some people believe January is named for Juno, Roman protector goddess of the state and daughter of Saturn. Most people believe January was named for Janus.

As a reader and author, I'm very drawn to time travel novels. Perhaps it's a form of escapism that helps me move through the past, present and future with equal delight.

While I don't do new year's resolutions anymore, I've concluded that in 2015 I spent too much time recalling the past and projecting the future, and not enough time shaping my daily life. Just the awareness of this is helping me to shift and live in the moment more.

The now can be a very magical place!

Take this moment to analyze your pattern. Please share if you’d like to.

Percentage of time I spend in the:

Past
Present
Future

If you are a writer, do you see how living in the now could help you be more productive in moving your career forward?

Thanks for stopping by today. May you thoroughly enjoy your journey through 2016.
