Give Thanks for the Simple (sometimes silly) Pleasures

Thanksgiving just passed. I hope you all had a great holiday with friends and family. This time of year, we like to reflect on those things we’re most thankful for. I give thanks for my husband and son, and that we’re all healthy. I’m thankful we have enough food to eat and a roof over our heads. I’m thankful for the road trip to the National Parks out West my husband, son, and I took a few months ago.

However, I thought it would be fun to list other more simple, even silly, things I’m thankful for, those things that give me pleasure, no matter how small. Here’s my list, not in any particular order.

·       The Zombie Apocalypse hasn’t happened yet
·       That first sip of coffee in the morning
·       That first sip of wine with my evening meal
·       Happy Hour at my favorite watering holes
·       Weight Watchers cream cheese slathered on a Thomas’ bagel thin (only 5 WW Smartpoints)
·       Williams-Sonoma Pecan Pumpkin Butter
·       Anything pumpkin
·       Netflix
·       Dark chocolate with rich, red wine

·       Romance novel heroes with their sculpted bodies and lovemaking skills, but most of all their kindness toward others and their willingness to sacrifice for those they love
·       Hallmark Christmas movies
·       Christmas songs
·       Scoring a Kate Spade handbag at a deep, deep discount
·       Scoring anything at a discount
·       Any day the sun shines
·       Girlfriends
·       Books, mine and others I love
·       My cats

·       Mani-pedis
·       Sandals
·       Homemade soup
·       Amazon Prime (although I spend way too much there)

I could go on and on but then I’d never finish this blog. What are your favorite simple pleasures?

Take time from your busy holiday schedules to read a romance. If you like holiday romances, here are a few I think you’ll enjoy.

Like Hallmark movies with sizzle?
A Groom for Christmas (Love On a Dare Book 1)

Fun holiday read.

A GROOM FOR CHRISTMAS is a new twist on the classic Hallmark Christmas movie full of family, humor, love, and a little bit of redemption.

Family pressure just might make her do something crazy...

When a young woman hires her hometown’s former bad boy to be her pretend fiancé for the holidays, she finds she can’t wrap up her feelings as easily as a Christmas gift.

New York jewelry designer Graceann Palmer has two days to find a fiancé to bring home to Pennsylvania for the holidays so her matchmaking mama will quit fixing her up with jerks. The Falcon, a motorcycle-riding, leather-clad former high school crush, helped her out once before. Maybe he'll do it again.

Jake Falco, man of many mysteries, is back in town on a mission—one the people of Spirit Lake most likely won't appreciate. When Graceann presents him with her crazy scheme, it gives him something he's always wanted—a chance to get to know Graceann. It also gives him the perfect opportunity to add fuel to his project of revenge.

But as Jake and Graceann grow closer, their engagement-of-convenience begins to feel like the real deal—until Jake’s secrets are revealed.

Can a relationship that began with lies and secrets bloom like a rare Christmas rose into happily-ever-after?

Like a few new twists on classic fairy tales?

A Cinderella Christmas

Short. Sweet. Fantasy.

Jessica Gallo no longer believed in fairytales or happy endings. And she certainly didn’t believe she’d find her Prince Charming at Saks Fifth Avenue. Her Fairy Godmother thought differently.

2014 EPIC Award Finalist, Best Short Romance

Her Snow White Christmas (Snow Globe Magic Book 1)

WINNER 2016 EPPIE Award for Best Short Work.

A Christmas snow globe from a mysterious stranger swirls holiday magic for a sophisticated New York woman with a broken heart and a handsome Iraq War vet with a secret.

As a child, Avery Coleman loved Snow White and dreamed of Prince Charming. The adult Avery no longer believes in fairy tales. She’d settle for a handsome prince as ambitious for success as she is. Then an eccentric woman gives Avery a Christmas snow globe, advising her that princes come in many disguises. But when family obligations call Avery from Manhattan back to her small hometown in Vermont, she finds there aren’t many princes to be found in the forest of her family’s Christmas tree lot. At least it’s a vacation from her wicked witch of a boss.

Iraq War veteran Josh Huntsman always did what was expected of him. Believing there had to be more to life than chasing money and prestige, he’d left the corporate world for life in the Army. But his stint in the military cost him more than expected. Back from Iraq, Josh hides his past, volunteering at the homeless shelter and working at a Christmas tree lot. He isn’t ready to rejoin the rat race, and definitely has no use for a bright-lights-big-city girl like the ambitious fiancée who dumped him.

Leaving New York to spend the holidays selling Christmas trees in Vermont might sound magical to some, but for Avery, it’s a return to the place she worked hard to escape. But it’s Christmas and magic swirls in the air like glitter in a snow globe. And a single kiss might awaken a lifetime of happily ever after.

5 Things ~ #LynnCrain #AmGrateful #RB4Us

I know that some people will think the Thanksgiving thing has played itself out for the year but I do have some things to say about it. So here goes.

This year has been really weird for my family, starting on January 3rd when my husband was diagnosed with cancer. While we’ve maintained as much of a normal life as possible, it’s also given me lots of time to reflect upon things too. And because I could make a massive list, I’ve honed it down to just five things.

My Family ~ Even though my husband had a hard year, we’ll be ending it well with his full remission. His health is getting better. Our sons supported us this year and kept our spirits high when things got intense. Family is all about the ups and downs of life. You can’t have one without the other.

My Writing ~ I’ll be honest, I couldn’t have survived this year without my writing. It kept me focused and on track with life and all the nuances it threw at me throughout the year. Writing is one of the most portable things that a person can ever do. It didn’t matter if I was sitting in a hospital waiting room or taking care of the grandkids, I could pull out my phone or writing pad and get to work. There is no other profession that makes it so easy to have a career while in the midst of tragedy.

My Writing Friends ~ I’ve been a writer a long, long time and have met a lot of great people on the way. Many of those friends, I know I can call day or night with a problem. Like when my husband was diagnosed, I texted a writing friend just three words, ‘He has it’, and she called me within twenty minutes. We are an amazing group of people and are willing to share our experiences, our shoulders and most of all our time when one of our own is in trouble.

My Writing Groups ~ While I’m fairly new to Romance Books 4 Us, the ladies here have supported me forever. And I am grateful for that camaraderie. Writing groups keep us accountable, focused and reminds us over and over that we can become exactly who we want to be in our profession.

Everything Else ~ I am thankful for the fact my husband has a great job, and we have enough of everything. From the roof over my head to the homeless person on the corner in many American cities, I am grateful for you because you remind me of what I have and that I need to help more because I am so blessed.

And that’s it. Short, sweet and to the point.

But there’s one last thing…there’s a song I love every time I hear it…it’s called Life’s A Dance. I heard it today on the long drive from Nevada to New Mexico, and it jogs my memory again. We aren’t expected to know it all, but we should be able to learn new things as we need them. Life is something you learn as you go. As I get older, I get more and more grateful for the simple things in life, the things near and dear to my heart. And that includes Cara Marsi’s list of simple things, especially her number #1. I too am thankful the Zombie Apocolypse hasn’t happened.

What about you? Just what all are you thankful for? See you next month!

Hope you all have a great month…see you next time!

Thanksgiving Menu - One new, One Old

Sharon Hamilton here.

I used to cook for 30-40 people every Thanksgiving. These days, our family is so scattered, we rarely do this, except for a big family gathering every 10 years or so. This year, we're going to my brother's house, but I'm making the turkey and the stuffing. I am also making Butternut Squash Soup, as soups are my specialty.

And then I was looking over some of my author friends' newsletters, and came up with a new cranberry sauce from Cat Johnson. I asked her permission to post it here. I finished making it today and boy is it yummy!!

So, from my household to yours, here are a couple of recipes that will enhance your Thanksgiving celebration. Love to all of you and may your families be safe, wherever they are. This will be the first time ever all 4 kids and their spouses, and all 6 grandkids will be here for Thanksgiving.

DRUNKEN CRANBERRY SAUCE

3# Fresh Cranberries (whole)
1 1/2 cups bourbon
1/2 cup orange juice
2 cups brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Grated orange peel from one fresh medium orange

Rinse and pick through cranberries, discarding any berries that are split, soft or discolored.

Put cranberries into a medium bowl and cover with 1 1/2 cups bourbon and 1/2 cup of orange juice. Cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight.

THE NEXT DAY...

Pour the marinated cranberries and all liquid into a medium saucepan and add all remaining ingredients.

Bring just to a slow boil, and then lower heat.

Simmer until mixture reduces and gels (about a half our), while stirring occasionally.

Cool and serve.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP

One large butternut squash
2 cups 1/2 and 1/2
1 cardboard carton Turkey Broth (large) or Vegetable Broth
1/2 cup butter
2 T flour
2 heavy shakes Nutmeg
2 heavy shakes Cinnamon
1/2 cup dry Sherry or Bourbon
(optional) large can peach or apricot halves
Pink Himalayan Sea Salt

Halve the butternut squash, remove seeds. Place on cookie sheet, baste with butter, lightly salt,  and bake @ 400 for 45 mins.

When cooked tender (should be like mashed potatoes), remove the yellow meat, place into blender. Discard rind.

Add Turkey or Vegetable broth, 1/2 and 1/2, flour and optional peaches or apricots, blend until smooth and creamy. Sometimes you have to split the liquid and the squash ingredients into 1/2 if your blender is small. Idea is to have a fully blended soup mix after blending. No lumps!

Return mixture to large soup pan, heat until begins to thicken, adding one cube butter. You can add more 1/2 and 1/2, or broth if you want it thinner. Add salt, shakes of Cinnamon and Nutmeg to taste, and dry Sherry or Bourbon.

Serve with drizzle or dollop of Creme Fraiche, garnish rosemary and cranberry. Sprinkle with Pink sea salt.

This soup can be made ahead of time and is actually better the second day!  Enjoy!

Now all you need is my new book, Bachelor SEAL, which is available on all retailers.  This is Book 5 in the popular Sleeper SEALs Series built around the same theme. Enjoy!

Sleeper SEALs are former U.S. Navy SEALs recruited by a new CIA counter-terror division to conduct solo dark ops missions to combat terrorism on US soil.
Medically discharged from the Teams, notorious bachelor SEAL, Morgan Hansen, is approached to lead the biggest undercover operation of his career. For credibility, he is tasked with training and partnering with his ex, from a breakup that made news headlines and nearly ended is career.
Women’s empowerment guru, Halley Hansen, has built an empire around her live televised events and seminars. But her world-wide message for women has put her in the cross-hairs of some radical terrorist cells operating within the United States. The last person she wants to turn to or trusts is Morgan, her ex.
They bury their pain to work together for a cause bigger than the both of them. And if they don’t implode in the passion of their re-connection, they just might have a chance to save the women of the world.

My Thanksgiving List

It’s my turn to blog on Thanksgiving Day. We’re all busy, but each of us should take time out of our day to think about what we’re thankful for, especially in these dark times throughout the world.

            Here’s what I’m thankful for:

My husband and son are the loves of my life, and I thank God every day for giving them to me. I may argue with my husband, I may worry about my son and wish he’d settle down with a good woman. My son lives 2,500 miles away and I miss him. He’s gainfully employed and owns his house, so I’m grateful for that. Through it all, we love each other and we’re here for each other.

I’m thankful for the roof over our heads and the food on our table. I pray for those fellow Americans who are suffering - those out of work, without enough food for their families, no shelter. Please keep them in your prayers today.

I’m thankful my grandparents (all four of them) left Italy to begin a new life in the United States early in the twentieth century. We’re a nation of immigrants and I’m proud of my immigrant heritage. Although my grandparents, like most of those from Southern and Eastern Europe, faced discrimination in this country at the turn of the last century, they left behind lives of poverty and hardship to give their descendants a chance at a better life. My grandparents prevailed. They worked hard and raised their families. The United States afforded my parents, me, my siblings, my cousins opportunities we wouldn’t have had anywhere else. Thank you, Grandparents.

I’m thankful I get to do something I love – write romance stories. And I’m doubly thankful for those readers who buy my books. Thank you, readers.

Talking #Thanksgiving with @chrisfoxlorenz #Romance #Holiday

Since tomorrow is Thanksgiving, I’ll wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving today. It’s one of my favorite holidays – probably because I don’t have all that preparation, stress and cooking. For the last several years, my family has enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner at a local catering hall complete with food, desert, Christmas decorations, games and a visit from Santa. So, without all that time consuming work and family chaos, what better way to spend the beginning of the holiday season than reading Christmas books?
Since late October I’ve been scouring my local Barnes & Noble for Christmas books. Since I subscribe to many author newsletters and updates through Amazon, I usually keep a running list of my favorite authors Christmas releases. I also jot down any Christmas books that friends recommend or that pop up in my Facebook feed and look intriguing. I don’t know about you, but I’ll confess that if a cover grabs my eye most likely I’ll pick it up. And if the blurb sounds appealing that usually seals the deal. So picture me walking ever so carefully to the register, a tower of books balanced precariously in my hands. As of today I have about two dozen Christmas books piled on my night stand calling to me. Picking out the books is the easy part – deciding which one to start reading first is the hard part.
Can you just see my OCD kicking in? Yes, it takes some time for me to decide which book will be the first of the season. And after I choose the first book I put the rest in the order that I will read each one. Sometimes it’s the cover that helps me decide; sometimes it’s the back blurb. But after much thought, picking up and putting down, I stack them up in the final order and the reading begins!
Since I’m usually busy writing or editing during the day, my reading time has to wait until the late evening, when my work is done and the family has been fed (if I don’t feed them they won’t leave me alone to read lol). I’ve become quite the expert at reading in bed into the wee hours. I’ve acquired just the right pillows for propping up without a neck or back ache. I’ve got a bed tray where I can keep a cup of tea for late night sipping. And I collect reading lights like some women probably collect lipstick. If there’s a science to reading in bed, I think I’ve made some good discoveries.
So tomorrow night, after everyone is stuffed with Turkey, potatoes and pie, and the football game blares from living rooms across the country, you will not find me in the kitchen with a scrubbing pad and soapy arms. Nope, this girl will be climbing into her bed, a hot cup of tea on a wooden tray and a stack of Christmas books spread across the comforter. I don’t know what makes my heart flutter more – those beautiful covers or the heart stopping romances between them.
How about you? Have you started picking up your Christmas reads yet?

When The Heart Finds Its Way Home

Every year at this time, I get nostalgic for family and events of the past, especially those involving people now gone. Maybe it's something about the changing from summer to fall, and the end of fall to the cold winter we have to prepare for. We begin to look inward, not outward to outside adventures. We focus more on our homes, the fireplaces and the fires of our own emotions.

I guess it's a great time for curling up with a good book, and for us romance writers, perhaps more than anything, it is OUR TIME. But I've always enjoyed the fall, as I enjoy the first rains, the clouds, the colorful leaves, the need for warm quilts and blankets, when holding hands becomes such a nurturing thing to do this time of year because it is warm.

My grandmother used to make Swedish Tea Ring, and I got my hand slapped when I tried to sneak pinches of the dough. My grandmother on my mother's side had ladies auxiliary teas and special holiday projects. We were a family who participated in choirs so there were rehearsals for the big Christmas season to come, my father would break out his drums to practice. My grandfather, the preacher, wore woolen scarves so his voice would hold up for all the events coming up. His biggest fear was getting a cold since he was such a wonderful orator and commanding presence in the pulpit. My mother was the beautiful soloist who would sing and make people in the audience cry with her high soprano notes reaching Heaven itself.

We'd hear from missionaries coming home for a brief Christmas travel, showing slides of their work in Asia and Africa, Turkey, Russia and parts of Indonesia and Japan. We made cookies for senior homes and my folks and I used to go deliver them. Mrs. Callison, my mother's best friend, made special sandwiches for the men at the Napa County Jail, which was her mission in life.

I remember attending church with Grandma Fox, and all 7 of her purses hanging on her arm. Going up front when Grandpa had the "Call" between the third and fourth stanzas of the closing hymn, that is, if no one else did, because it broke my heart not to have someone go up front. I tell people I've lived such a charmed life because I've been saved so many times, I've lost count.

I remember my little brother singing Christmas Carols during Thanksgiving - things he'd learned in school or Sunday school. I'd often fall asleep hearing him sing "binkle bells" to the night.

Thanksgiving is that one last deep breath we take in before the Christmas season descends upon all of us, all the mad rushing around, overspending, and going unconscious from coffee, sugar, alcohol and keeping up with everyone else. A mass hysteria and blindness descends on us all. But for the week of Thanksgiving, we just relax, meet with our family and friends, overeat, sleep a little more, stay warm and get ready.

We used to invite Stanford students to our Thanksgiving table. I remember Laly from Turkey. Bobo from France, and several others from India, Japan and China. It wasn't anything special, except sharing a meal in a traditional American way, with students who were far from their families back at home.

Thanksgiving is a decent time. A time of reflection. We have a lot to be grateful for, thankful for. We lay down another year of tradition, warmth and love. We make our homes sparkle and we allow our hearts to be renewed. Because the magic of the Thanksgiving season is that in giving thanks, we are healed. We don't have to be a perfect country or people. We just have to remember to be thankful for what we have and not regret what we don't.

Simple concept and yet, it could change the world. Imagine if all the people...well, you know the rest of the song, don't you?

NOVEMBER REFLECTIONS

The autumn leaves here in north Texas are finally bejeweled. My eyes feast on them every day because they came late and will probably not last long.

Election season has left almost everyone in an emotional state. The full moon on Monday will be the most intense super moon of the past sixty-eight years. In the next few days we may see overwhelming emotions in those who feel extreme losses or gains.

US Thanksgiving is just weeks away, and we’re deep in the season of gratitude. As we look around during these post-election days much soul searching is taking place.

What are you most grateful for? What can you focus on that magnifies the beauty you bring to the table of life? Each of us is a piece of the jigsaw puzzle of the whole.

Make time for some self-nurturing and compassion as you stroll the leaf-strewn paths of your journey through life. Focus on the positive and the light that shines through your eyes and in your smile.

At the end of the day we are all just humans coexisting on a beautiful planet together.

Thank you to the many supportive and friendly readers and writers whose paths have crossed mine this past year. These precious encounters have made my writing process a joy and pulled me out of my solitary and sometimes lonely cave. Many of us have had extreme challenges in 2016, and our sharing has brought us all closer.

A heartfelt Happy Thanksgiving I wish you.

A Special Time of Year - Filled With Love and Blessings

I always struggle for ways to express how special and magical the season around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years is to me. Intertwined with the holidays are several family birthdays, which combine to make the time both too hectic to enjoy and impossible not to cherish. It's a constant struggle to remind myself to stop and embrace the hope beyond the hurry, the love behind the giving and give the season its due.
Nestled between Thanksgiving and New Years, Christmas represents both death and a bright new life. It is the death of heated days, the expiration of the growing season, a burrowing in of all that cannot function within Winter's frigid grasp. But its frosty embrace ushers in a new kind of warmth. It enforces a new closeness, a fresh reason to snuggle together and contemplate our blessings before a roaring fire or under a snuggly blanket. It's the season of love and hope because, though it comes at the end of one year, teetering on the edge of a brand new one, Christmas represents the glitter and beauty of giving and sharing...a time when peace on earth and goodwill toward men is more than a carelessly uttered cliche. It's a fond hope, a heartfelt wish, and despite our ongoing challenges, it's the goal we just can't resist reaching for...year after year.
I hope this Holiday season is everything you could wish for, filled with the only things that matter: family, friends, health and comfort. Enjoy the good will infused in the season and, if you can, take the time to appreciate the richness of your blessings.
