Drawing a Blank

The eighteenth of every month is my day to blog. Some months I have a topic or at the very least, an idea. This month I got nada, nothing, just an empty mental jar in need of ideas.

For an author, that's bad. Stress flares and the inner voice grows more demanding, berating you with "Think. Think. You gotta have something."

Of course, the effect is you have nothing and nothing can or does spring to mind.

So, you try to do some activity to distract yourself or hopefully, find inspiration: Social media, games, reading, talking, or Hemmingway's solution--a drink.

But maybe no ideas present themselves. So then what...Well, nothing.

Life is stressful. We are living during a pandemic, people are sick, too many have died, people have lost jobs and are worried about caring for families.

I wish I had a solution. I won't tell you it will be alright. I don't know that but I hope that it will be.

Maybe, you'll do what I and others do: take a breath, scream out the frustration.

Hopefully, a solution will come to you and make life less stressful and life, yours, mine, ours, will get better.

That's my holiday wish for all of us in 2021. A better life.

Who was King Wenceslas and What the Heck Is Figgy Pudding?

Who was King Wenceslas and What the Heck Is Figgy Pudding?

The Scoop On Your Favorite Christmas Carols

Have you ever wondered, as I have, about the origins of some of our most beloved Christmas songs, and about some of the strange words and phrases in those songs? Wonder no more. Here's the inside story.

"Good King Wenceslas"

'Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the Feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about,
Deep and crisp and even.'

King Wenceslas was born into the royal Premysl dynasty in what is now the Czech Republic. His grandmother was murdered by an anti-Christian group, of which his mother was a member. The good king himself was murdered by his brother in 929. Not so cheery, huh? Wenceslas was named a saint and his feast day is celebrated on Dec. 26, also the feast of St. Stephen.

"We Wish You a Merry Christmas"

'Oh, bring us a figgy pudding,
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding,
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding,
And a cup of good cheer.'

Figgy pudding is a steamed English dessert, better known as plum pudding, that dates back to sixteenth century England. It's not anything like Jell-O. It's made with dried fruit and figs, hence the name. At one time it also included suet, the white fat found around kidneys and loins in cattle and sheep.

"It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas"

'A Pair of Hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots
Is the wish of Barney and Ben.
Dolls that will talk and will go for a walk
Is the hope of Janice and Jen.'

Any boomers out there? Do you remember Hopalong Cassidy, the cowboy? I loved him. Watched his show every week. Had a crush on his cute sidekick, Lucky. Did you know the Hopalong boots in this song referred to Hopalong Cassidy? I didn't. I don't even know most of the words so missed the Hopalong reference all together.

2018 Update: There are some who want to ban this song because it’s sexist. It says boots and pistols are for boys and dolls for girls. When the song was written, things were more sexist than now. Enjoy the song, and if your daughters want cowboy boots and your sons want dolls, go for it.

"Mistletoe and Holly"

'Oh by gosh, by golly, it's time for mistletoe and holly,
Tasty pheasants, Christmas presents,
Countrysides covered with snow.'

The use of mistletoe and holly goes back to our pagan past. Pagans believed mistletoe, holly and ivy protected us from evil spirits and also encouraged the return of spring.

"Here We Come A-Wassailing"

'Love and joy comes to you,
And to your wassail too.
And God bless you
And send you a Happy New Year.'

Anyone ever seen a wassail? Me neither. Sounds like a furry little animal. A wassail is a drink, warm mulled ale or wine. Yum. Perfect for sipping on cold Christmas Eves. The word comes from an old Anglo-Saxon toast, "Waes hael," meaning to be in good health. Now you know what a wassail is.

"The Christmas Song"

'Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping at your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.'

I think we all know what a roasted chestnut is. I've never tasted one, but I hear it's low-fat and tastes more like a sweet potato than a nut. I've seen vendors on Philadelphia sidewalks selling roasted chestnuts, but I've never had the inclination to try one.

"Auld Lang Syne"

'Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne."

What the heck does all that mean? No one is sure. The poet Robert Burns put the words to paper in the eighteenth century. The song likely has its roots in Scottish literature. Roughly translated, auld lang syne means "the good old days."

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"

'Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
Had a very shiny nose,
And if you ever saw it,
You would even say it glows.'

Rudolph was created in 1939 by a copywriter for the Montgomery Ward department stores. Gene Autry was approached to record the song but didn't want to. His wife talked him into it. The rest, as they say, is history.

2018 Update: Some want to ban this song because it represents bullying. I never thought of it like that. I suppose it is saying Rudolph was bullied. I enjoy the song. And Rudolph wins at the end.

Last by not least -

"Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer"

'She'd been drinking too much eggnog,
And we begged her not to go.
But she left her medication,
So she stumbled out the door
Into the snow.'

Don't you love this song? Makes no sense, but it's such fun. Does anyone still drink eggnog in these more health-conscious times? I used to enjoy eggnog (without the alcohol) when I was a child. No way would I touch the artery-clogging stuff now. But that's just me. If you enjoy it, especially with a little Irish whiskey, go for it.

In the words of Tiny Tim, "God bless us, everyone."

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy New Year. I raise a goblet of wassail and a cup of eggnog to one and all.

While outlining a romantic suspense that was inspired on a skiing trip last year, it occurred to me that although each season has unique features to enhance a story, winter has loads of them. Here are a few ~~ can you add more?

Avalanche
Icy Roads
Snowfall & Icicles
Blizzard
Hibernation
Frozen Lakes/Rivers
Cars Not Starting or Getting Stuck
Ice Skating/Skiing/Apres-ski/Mulled Wine
Snowboarding, Sledding, Cross-Country Skiing
Problems with a Ski Lift
Seeking the Perfect Christmas Tree in a Forest
Building a Snowman/Snow Woman/Snow Children
Drinking Hot Cocoa with Marshmallows, Eggnog
Setting a Fire in the Fireplace
Watching Flames Crackle in the Grate

Being Snowbound
Winter Solstice/Winter Festivals/Traditions of Many Cultures
Festivals of Light/Religious Traditions
Nearly Freezing To Death When Stranded in Sub-Zero Weather

The Magic of Believing in Magic
Soups & Stews, Hearty Food to Warm Body and Soul
Snowmobiling
Night Skiing With Torches
Making Snow Angels
Being Cornered by a Bear or Other Hungry Wild Animals

Weather and location -- like an isolated cabin high on a snow-covered mountainside --  can set a brooding, intense tone in a winter story. A deadly winter storm can be as alive as any two-legged character, with apparent emotions and intentions. Timing kicks in, with a race against the clock not to freeze or to get ahead of a storm. There are endless combinations.

While the holidays are happy times for many people, others are depressed, lonely and even in despair. Many families have lost loved ones around the holidays, and the echo of that loss returns every winter. If you know someone who is suffering or lonely, think about opening your home and hearth to them this holiday season. It may gift you with richly rewarding memories.

This is my last blog post for the year, so let me thank each of you for enriching my life in 2016, and a special thank you to those who supported my efforts by buying my books.  I wish you Happy Holidays, wherever you are in the world!

A Special Time of Year - Filled With Love and Blessings

I always struggle for ways to express how special and magical the season around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years is to me. Intertwined with the holidays are several family birthdays, which combine to make the time both too hectic to enjoy and impossible not to cherish. It's a constant struggle to remind myself to stop and embrace the hope beyond the hurry, the love behind the giving and give the season its due.
Nestled between Thanksgiving and New Years, Christmas represents both death and a bright new life. It is the death of heated days, the expiration of the growing season, a burrowing in of all that cannot function within Winter's frigid grasp. But its frosty embrace ushers in a new kind of warmth. It enforces a new closeness, a fresh reason to snuggle together and contemplate our blessings before a roaring fire or under a snuggly blanket. It's the season of love and hope because, though it comes at the end of one year, teetering on the edge of a brand new one, Christmas represents the glitter and beauty of giving and sharing...a time when peace on earth and goodwill toward men is more than a carelessly uttered cliche. It's a fond hope, a heartfelt wish, and despite our ongoing challenges, it's the goal we just can't resist reaching for...year after year.
I hope this Holiday season is everything you could wish for, filled with the only things that matter: family, friends, health and comfort. Enjoy the good will infused in the season and, if you can, take the time to appreciate the richness of your blessings.
Happy Holidays, Everybody!

Based in the Bedeviled & Beyond world, this fun collection of Christmas short stories will put a smile on your face and turn every day into a Hell-i-day!

#4.  An Elvish Catastrophe: Astra and Darma are Christmas shopping at the mall when a pack of ninja elves invade the place and demand the execution of all faux Santas. Talk about little man syndrome…these ninjas have it in spades!

Happy Thanksgiving by Janice Seagraves

Happy Thanksgiving.

Hope everyone has a great day, where ever you live.

We have a full house and I'm cooking a twenty-two pound bird. My hubby likes lots of leftovers when it comes to turkey, and I love the smell of turkey cooking. This year my daughter told me to wake her early, so she can help and learn how to cook the bird.

What do you like about Thanksgiving?

I don't have a story about Thanksgiving, but I do have a Christmas story or two.

My new eBook, Matrix Crystal Christmas, which follows, Matrix Crystal Hunters, is now available: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GJCNBAY
Matrix Crystal Christmas is made up of two short stories (one erotic and one sweet) for the fans of my novel, Matrix Crystal Hunters, who told me that they wanted to know what happened next.

In Crystal Flower Christmas: Vach and Maya are on a mission to undam the Laonooco River for the drought stricken region. As heartache fractures their marriage, will the gift of a crystal flower mend their relationship or break it beyond repair?

In Crystal Clear Christmas: Plague has struck the village of Zama and the citizens blame the only human left on Zenevieva, Maya. Will Vach make the ultimate sacrifice to save his wife?
