Where Have All the Years Gone? A blog by Romance Author Marianne Stephens

I look at myself today and wonder how those extra pounds cemented to my body ever got the chance to take up permanent residence. And, the gray/white in my dark hair? When did that start? Frown lines? Wrinkles? Aching knees and body?

When I was young, I couldn’t wait to turn 16. Then 18. Then 21. Then, 30. After that, I was just too busy raising a family and teaching to worry about age. When I turned 50, I actually felt surprising good. It was turning that dreaded 60 that depressed me.

All the fun emails people send me about “remember when” are entertaining…and things I do remember. My memories of growing up before I got married now seem so distant, as the years I’ve been married outnumber the years I was single.

When did I get so old?

I, like everyone else, remember certain important things from my past. Growing up and going to school. Saying the Pledge of Allegiance. And, saying the “Our Father” prayer in school because it was perfectly acceptable to do so. I remember leaving school early every Thursday to walk to religious instruction, and no one mentioned the fact that a public school allowed this early dismissal for religious reasons. It just happened.

I remember gym suits and respecting teachers. Dressing appropriately was important and not something argued about. Nothing was said about “free speech in dress”, long hair for boys, earrings, makeup, etc. We followed rules and did as told. Air raid drills were common in schools. Getting into trouble meant your parent would meet with the teacher and you’d be disciplined.

I remember where I was when President Kennedy was shot, and how I’d told my mother that morning that I’d had a “vision” he was going to be killed. Eerie thought to have, and worried me for months. How did I know that would happen?

I remember the deaths of loved ones, the marriages and births of others.

I remember being in a car accident and falling out the door (no seat belts then) and thinking to myself, “I’m dead.” I vowed not to drive again but did.

I remember how important school studies were, and how we all needed to take a foreign language to get into college. Driving was a privilege, not a demand. Working was important, and you never left a job without giving two weeks notice. Unheard of. Not ethical. Not done.

I’m a baby boomer, and life is so different now. But, I’m older, and can sit back and watch as I reflect on what was, what is, and ponder what will be. Medicare age is here and that  brings a new installment in the book of my life. Can I be that old?

My 50th High School reunion has passed. When once we talked about college hopes, careers, marriage and raising families, now we’ll talk about retirement, health issues, and grandchildren.

I taught for years, then began my writing career “late in life”. The sensuous or erotic scenes I write I’d never have written before. But, I’m older now. At peace with myself. Not out to please others or prove anything to anyone as to what I write. I do it for me.

I think about a scene from the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes” where the character played by Kathy Bates waits patiently for a parking space, only to have two young women zip into the spot before she can move her car. She tells them she was waiting for the spot, only to have them tell her that they’re younger and faster.

First instinct would have you angry but accept rudeness from younger, flighty people and search for another spot. In this case, however, the character rams her car into the younger girls’ car a few times. When they scream at her, she replies that she’s older and has more insurance.

I love that scene. It reminds me that I’m older, don’t have to give a damn what others think, and can do as I please (within the law, of course). I no longer shrink back into a corner of silence if I don’t agree with others more vocal. I speak my mind, if I feel I need to.

With age comes the wisdom to know when to speak, and when to shrug it off and walk away. Picking my battles keeps me sane, and preaching to deaf ears gets me nothing but pain. Life has changed, the rules have changed, people have changed, but I’ll roll with the punches…as long as you don’t get in my way and irritate me.

Then, be prepared to hear me roar. I’m older now and not afraid to speak.

Losing a Publisher...Now What Do I Do? by Marianne Stephens

A "sign of the times": small publishers going out of business. Sad to see this happen. But with the onslaught on so-o-o many people self-publishing, it was bound to happen.

First, two years ago, Breathless Press went out of business. I only had one book there. Revising it now for re-pubbing in another anthology group.

Last year, Secret Cravings closed their doors. I had one nonfiction book there and just haven't done anything with it. I self-pubbed the print versions of the book, so I guess I should do the same with an ebook version.

And now, sad to say, Ellora's Cave is closing. I got my first contract through them. Loved the people there and was treated fairly. I know others had complaints, but other than being unhappy with one cover, I enjoyed my time as an EC author. Actually, two authors: Marianne Stephens and April Ash.

So, what will be my next step? Find another publisher "home" for the stories I'm getting rights back for? Self-pub the books myself, after doing some editing? Just seek ebook publishing? "Fork in the Road" decisions to make.

SIGH.

Not sure what I want to do. I have print versions of my books and will keep some...forever.

It's like being laid-off. So many years with a company and now it'll be over in a couple of months.

Thank you, EC, for giving me my start as an author. Thanks for the parties/lunches/whatever at conferences. I have great memories! Loved those Cave Men!

Only You and a Special Love Story #NaughtyHaunts #Romance #LoveStory #TinaDonahue

When I was conceiving The Magic That You Do for the Naughty Haunts anthology, one of my challenges was to come up with a perfect title for a romance that isn't only erotic but deeply moving.

Lyrics from the golden oldie Only You came to mind. The first time I heard it was in a movie I saw a few years back. Can't recall the movie - basically it sucked. But I did remember the song. Magical.

From there, I began to plot my story about passion, friendship, love - things a man simply can't forget. Suddenly, Finn and Caty were born. Unforgettable lovers who deserve their moment in time with each other.

Even though my romances are hot, my motto has always been 'heat with heart'. The Magic That You Do delivers on that promise.

Passion. Friendship. Love. Some things a man simply can’t forget…

Finn has no idea what he’s doing at a haunted house on Halloween, but his tour guide Caty certainly rocks his world. Irresistibly drawn to her, he indulges in wicked delight and a return to their shared destiny.

Excerpt:

Home. The word popped unbidden into Finn Gallagher’s mind. An odd occurrence even on Halloween when supernatural events supposedly ruled.

Not being superstitious, he should have smiled but couldn’t.

A Victorian house loomed before him, its façade painted rose, gingerbread trim strikingly white. Its vintage sign proclaimed: Haunted House Tours.

Definitely not home.

Children dashed past, costumed to resemble ghouls, reviled politicians, or popular media figures. Kim Kardashian kicked butt for the girls. Superman edged out Justin Bieber for the boys. Kids swarmed the neighborhood and worked their way down the street. Their shrieks and shrill laughter faded. None bothered with the tour.

Maybe it sucked.

Finn had no idea about that or why he was here, unable to recall the trip or this destination.

Blustery wind swept across Lake Huron. The wintry blast tousled his hair, rattled bare tree limbs, and delivered an unbearable chill from the water. He clutched his coat closer to his throat and lifted his face. Ominous clouds pressed in. Coming rain scented the air.

Honeyed light poured from the house, the glow warm and inviting.

Strange that a haunted house should seem safer and more enticing than the street. Whoever had planned this tour was clueless as to what the public wanted or children demanded. A new group of kids ignored the place, not even bothering to check out the two bicycles abandoned on the expansive front lawn. The bikes, along with rollerblades and skateboards, were the only transportation allowed on the island.

He stilled, not certain how he’d known that. Probably had been on the sign. Nope. On a brochure? He patted his pockets. No literature there. Mystified, he stepped closer to the place.

A young woman stood on the widow’s walk. Her waist-length blonde hair and long white dress whipped in the stiff breeze. She leaned against the railing and offered a welcoming smile.

Intense heat coursed through him. His knees wobbled.

Something creaked.

The front door had blown in…unless it had opened on its own.

Dismissing such a crazy notion, he lifted his hand in greeting to the woman.

Gone. Where?

Shadowed figures passed the upstairs windows, gauzy curtains making them indistinct. The promised ghosts? He wanted to laugh but didn’t. One form stood a head taller than the other. Had to be a man with the young woman he’d seen. The guy most likely her lover or husband.

Inexplicable sorrow gripped Finn followed by acute loss for someone he’d yet to meet. Definitely time to go. This was nuts.

He pivoted.

The scent of violets surrounded him even though no flowers bloomed on the bushes. Drawn by the fragrance, he hurried up the walk toward the house.

A child darted into his path.

He reared back to avoid colliding with the little girl.

Unmindful of his presence, she waved and shouted to her companions. “Hold up! You’re going too fast!”

Laughing, they bolted away and taunted. “Slow poke. Slow poke. Slow poke.”

She ran toward them, tripped on her witch costume, and tumbled to the grass.

“Whoa.” Finn crossed the lawn and touched her arm to help. “You okay?”

“No!” Crying, she shoved spilled candy into her sack and raced to her friends.

They laughed at her witch nose, bent from her fall. She giggled with them and set the thing right.

A gust scented with violets slammed into Finn and pushed him to the house.

Heart pounding, he crossed the porch and stopped in the foyer painted a cheery yellow with white moldings. Furniture from way back when decorated the expansive space.

Footfalls sounded overhead. One heavy. One lighter. The man and woman from the windows. He tilted his face to the ceiling. The couple crossed from room to room, working their way back to the master suite.

His skin prickled. He hadn’t a clue how he’d known that. Wait. The widow’s walk was on that side. Made sense the largest bedroom would be, too. He’d painted enough client portraits in front of and inside Victorian structures to know the architecture.

Relieved, he lowered his face and started.

The young blonde woman from earlier looked at him worriedly, her slender eyebrows lifted. “I’m sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you.” She rested her hand on his arm. “Are you all right?”

More like delighted to have her next to him instead of upstairs with the man…and the other woman. “Yeah.”

“I’m so glad.” Genuine happiness lit her lovely smile.

Her concern comforted and aroused Finn as nothing had in too many years. Warmth rolled through him, settling in his groin, thickening his cock.

Dark lashes fringed her sapphire-blue eyes. Pink flushed beneath her milky skin. Heat radiated from her despite the cold night and what little she wore. Her white crocheted dress was a throwback to hippy finery popular in the sixties, the intricate design bearing flowers and tassels. Silver rings graced each finger. None resembled an engagement or wedding band, thank God. The contraptions on her feet weren’t exactly shoes. There were no soles, merely braided leather cords wrapped around her slender toes that she’d then tied to her ankles. Dangling feathers and blossoms hammered from silver adorned the leather to make Bohemian wedding sandals.

His arms goose pimpled. He didn’t want to guess how he’d known the name for her footwear. Never had he been into women’s fashions, especially those from long ago. It was 2016 for Chrissakes, his thirtieth birthday barely past.

She couldn’t have been older than mid-twenties.

“Hi.” He offered his hand. “Finn Gallagher.”

Bliss crossed her lovely features. “Caitlyn.” She slid her fingers over his and squeezed gently.

His hair stood on end, indescribable pleasure filling him. Liking it, he grinned.

Loud laughter rang out overhead. “Did I interrupt your tour?”

“Not at all, Mr. Gallagher. I’ve been waiting for you.”

Sex and the Supernatural by Suz deMello

For many of us who write erotica, paranormal is the most enticing of the sub-genres, offering many ways to increase sexual tension. World-building allows us to create our own erotic settings, invent sexier creatures than those who exist on our planet, traipse through time to find or lose lovers. We can bend reality any way we choose. We can invent supernatural beings both virtuous and villainous while investing the corners of our new world with quirks that facilitate the thrills and spills that make a great read.

The paranormal encompasses so many sub-sub-genres! A partial listing: futuristic, including science fiction; steampunk; time travel; fantasy, which encompasses "creature" stories with vampires, weres, the fae, dragons, zombies and the like. Magic and witchcraft is also a subgenre of fantasy. All of these can be mixed into any story brew you please.

World-building 101: Take the basic elements of any book and consider how they may be made paranormal, i.e., beyond the normal.

Characters and conflicts: There's a natural tension in a romance between a paranormal entity and a human, and you can exploit this to your advantage and to the betterment of your book. Vampires are a great example. How can there be a "happily ever after" ending to a romance between an immortal, virtually invulnerable being and someone who will, inevitably, die? Would any sensible vampire dare to open his or her heart to a fragile human?

And how can a human trust in the love of an immortal? We who age must fear the loss of an immortal's love.

Vampires, being denizens of the night, are intrinsically mysterious. Powerful predators, vamps step easily into villainous roles, but lately we've been reading about heroic vampires. With their extraordinary senses, vampires can make extraordinary heroes. The vampires in my Highland
http://tinyurl.com/NaughtyList2014
Vampires series aretypical case in point, possessing super-strength and swiftness, as well as longevity.

There's also natural tension in a relationship between different supernatural beings. Werewolves and vampires are both dominating creatures. The males often figure as alphas in many an erotic romance. What happens when territories overlap? Clashes are inevitable, and the sex is awesome.

Many writers have created supernatural beings whose abilities amplify each others. For example, Jayne Castle (Jayne Ann Krentz) created different types of psychics in what I call her flower trilogy (Amaryllis, Orchid, and Zinnia); the differing talents need each other in order to effectively focus and use their powers. Often one of the dyad was female and the other male. Thus, they'd have to work together to solve the mystery and trap the villain. But the sexual tension and conflict were maintained using this device, for the female would wonder if the male truly loved her for her qualities other than her ability to focus his energies.

Others create creatures made for sex. Succubi and incubi, supernatural demons who use humans for sex and seed, have become popular. Some writers have invented aliens which can extrude body parts and insert them into their human subjects for pleasure and pain.

Setting: Setting is an often overlooked aspect of our novels. As an editor, I have read several stories that are completely non-specific as to setting. As a reader, I like to be grounded in a story. I like to know where and when the story's taking place. I don't believe that I suffer from terminal uniqueness, so as a writer, I let the reader know where and when the story's taking place, even if the both are completely imaginary, i.e., "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away."

In a paranormal, it is fatal to overlook setting. More positively, some settings are so compelling that they will earn your book a spot on many a reader's keeper shelf. Fans return again and again to the Harry Potter books and to Tolkien not only because of the intriguing characters, compelling conflicts and universal themes, but because they want to spend more time studying at Hogwarts and exploring Middle Earth. Orson Scott Card calls fiction dependent upon a particular setting milieu fiction, and gives Tolkien's Ring Trilogy as an example.

Of course you may create any setting that compels you, but when you do so, consider how your
http://tinyurl.com/AudrynsQuest
setting will facilitate or block mystery and romance.

When world-building for a paranormal erotic romance, I like to factor in elements that will facilitate sexy situations. In Queen’s Quest, a paranormal erotic thriller, I postulated a planet with an extremely low birthrate. Babies were rare and prized. Thus, sex was encouraged—including public sex—which enabled me to include numerous sex scenes, while the dearth of normal births encouraged the characters to find other reproductive methods. These added to the suspense subplot (I don't want to say more without providing a spoiler alert).

Settings need not be exotic and magic need not be arcane, invented from whole cloth. You can use what you already know. I drew upon my teenage interests in tarot reading and Wicca to write Gypsy Witch, an erotic short story set in my hometown of Sacramento, California during the dog days of late summer. A character used witchcraft to bring to life the stone statues of knights set at the doorway of the downtown Masonic Temple, bringing magic to an otherwise mundane setting. The romantic conflict ended in a ménage—a different kind of magic.

Another example is Ocean Dreams, a short story set in a fictional marine park, much like Sea World or similar places. Many people visit them, so readers are able to draw upon their experiences to create the setting in their minds. That story features a dolphin shifter, which a fun departure for me. Find that story in the Naughty Reunions box set, http://tinyurl.com/NReunions.

Theme: Also overlooked, but as intrinsically a part of our stories as words themselves. Many paranormals feature the clash of good against evil. Paranormals employing figures out of religious traditions, such as angels, devils, demons and the like, will inevitably dabble in moral questions whether or not the author is aware that s/he is doing so. Raising such questions is older than Faust, older even than the Bible.

with Moon Maiden's Matehttp://tinyurl.com/NaughtyChances
Coming of age stories are also common. In erotica, we often read the induction of a virgin into the pleasures of sex. One of my erotic short stories, The Moon Maiden's Mate, is about an arranged marriage on a lunar colony. Another popular theme is the BDSM newbie learning about the joy of kink.

The message? Erotica isn’t only about sex. Write a good story and weave in explicit sex and you’ll have a really good story. Put it on another planet and you’ll have a great story. Paranormal content is a great way to engage the reader.

What to Charge for Anthologies or Boxed Sets? by Marianne Stephens

Boxed Sets/Anthologies seem to be popular with readers. X number of stories in one book. It's a chance to sample different writing styles, genres, and find new authors.

But...how much should authors charge for it?

While $.99 has been a hit with readers, are authors devaluing their works/talent? Difficult decision to make.

Yes, readers love this price. It's great for new/little\known authors to find buyers. But what about authors with followers? Authors who've been on best selling lists?

I'm torn trying to figure this out. I've been in two anthology groups. One pubs 4 times a year. The other, so far, only once a year. This group received 3rd place in the P&E anthology poll rating. Both groups charged $.99.

I'll soon be in another group with a new boxed set. We're looking at pricing. Lots of best selling authors. What should we do?

As an author, what do you think about selling a boxed set/anthology for $.99?
As a reader, is that the limit you set for yourself in buying a boxed set/anthology? Does it matter what authors have stories?

I'm like to hear your comments!

Happy Valentine's Day...from Some Sexy Guys! - by Marianne Stephens

Yeah, I can't let this opportunity go by without posting some wonderful guys for you to drool over. After all, Valentine's Day is today!
Maybe you'll be someone who gets a stuffed bear, like the one shown in this photo. Oh...if you're lucky, the guy holding it will look just like this guy and come aptly dressed (or undressed) when he presents you with his gift.
Notice his bulging muscles, the strategic position of that teddy bear...and the bear's little hat.
Are you wondering what's behind that bear? When you grab for the teddy, will you "find" something else, waiting for your caress?

Candy and flowers are the usual choice of gifts for your sweetheart to give you, but wouldn't you love something that keeps giving, and giving, and giving... Of course, recharging is necessary, but dream and fantasize all you want! What's under that bag? Use your imagination and place a face for this mystery man. And, what's under that box of Valentine chocolates? After you eat all the candy, will you find another wonderful surprise to enjoy?

Now, the message with this photo tells it all. What a luscious satin pillow for you to lay your head on. Comfy, smooth, surrounded by hot, sizzling male flesh. You get to fantasize what comes next! And...is that your hand holding up the pillow? How quickly can you move it aside to peek at what's behind it?

Valentine's Day is for lovers of all ages. Enjoy the day with someone you love...in any fantasy way you desire!

Real Love Can Heal A Broken Heart by Marianne Stephens

Heartache. Rejection. Broken promises in a love relationship that you thought was "real". Many of us have gone through the sadness of saying goodbye to a relationship we thought would last!

I fell madly in love with "Joe" when I lived in VA. The "head over heels" type of love. Everything was going fine...until I found out he was engaged to a woman "back home" in Iowa. Feeling betrayed and crushed, I had two options: continue seeing him and hope he'd break his engagement, or move on.

I moved on. I realized that if he was cheating on his fiancee with me, what would stop him from doing the same thing to me? Sigh.

This proved to be the best decision I have made in my life. My roommate dragged me to a dance at an nearby army post, and I met my husband! Although wary of what I was being told, once he took me to meet his parents, I knew he was honest and trustworthy.

My "real" love and I have been married almost 45 years...and no more broken heart for me!

In my story, Operation Man Hunt...in the Romance Books '4' Us published anthology, ENTICE ME - LUSCIOUS LOVE STORIES, my heroine is nudged back into the dating world after suffering through a broken heart. The hero entices her into her world as she entices him into hers. Once they settle some differences and share a common goal of honesty in their relationship, love blossoms for that "happily-ever-after".

Absolutely...There's a New Anthology Coming Your Way From Romance Books '4' Us by Marianne Stephens

Ten Member Authors of Romance Books '4' Us (Member Authors help run the blog and yahoo group) got together and wrote short stories for an anthology entitled ENTICE ME. It's the first anthology venture for RB4U, and I absolutely hope we can publish more!

My story: Operation Man Hunt
Chris Carlisle needs a man and Tony Davis becomes her goal. He learns the hidden reason for her enticing attempts to capture his attention. Both can’t deny the mutual, lusty attraction. Will true love follow?

Chris loses a bet and her consequence is to find a man. Her friend gives her a list of guidelines that could help. Chris starts with the list, and soon decides to "get her man" using her own steps.

Have you ever tried to find a mate using guidelines? Do you think they would work? Surely, personal chemistry has to be an important element in creating any relationship, right?

ENTICE ME will be released on 10 October. Keep checking the Romance Books '4' Us for more details!

Dear Diary...What I Didn't Write! by Marianne Stephens

I never kept a diary as a teenager. Why? My life was normal, had friends, went places, etc. But I also was very religious - Catholic upbringing - so had no real love interests to keep secret.

My innermost thoughts were about my future. Going to college and becoming a teacher. That's all I wanted to become. I liked certain boys, but they were not interested in me, other than as friends.

My diary entries would have been routine and nothing to shout about.

Now, my first real boyfriend (when I was a senior in high school), could have provided some interesting entries, had I chosen to write about him and our "relationship". He was in the Navy. A cousin of a friend. We saw each other a few times and he took me to my prom. We held hands and danced. Sat on the beach and talked. Nice guy.

But I was so nerdy, Had never been kissed. That is, until my navy guy kissed me. First REAL kiss, eyes closed and everything. I was so surprised at my reaction. The "Oh, it happened. I liked it. Do I need to go to confession?"

First kisses are so memorable. I felt this female "urge" to want more. And, backed off since I was sure I'd sinned somehow by feeling as I did.

Some people write everything in their diaries, confessing to each crush, romantic encounter, naughty desires. I didn't do that. I kept all those in my head.

Hmm. Maybe that's what fueled my writing? Past memories stored in my brain that I never revealed in a diary? If I had written them down, would I have forgotten them?

Uh, no. My navy guy and our kiss will forever be planted in my memory. So, maybe I didn't need that diary after all. While I can still remember my past, I'll have him and our kiss in my mind. Diaries may be thrown out, but memories that are super important will always stay with you.

I write with the Naughty Literati. We write anthologies and our 6th one will release in September. Naughty Reunions will have my story in it: Back in Your Arms.

Mother, May I Write Erotic Romance Books?

Okay...so I'm wondering how many erotic romance authors discussed this with their mothers before actually writing their stories.

I know I didn't! My mother, as a reader of sweet romances and biographies, wasn't the person I needed to ask what her opinion would be. I know she wouldn't have been happy, but she would support me.

And, she did. She just didn't want to READ my erotic romance books...which was okay with me. She read my other books, and had me send some to relatives. One aunt wanted an erotic romance book, and she had me send her one of those. But, like I said, my mother didn't want to read them.

Now that she's in a nursing home with dementia, she hardly reads anything. I don't discuss what I'm writing since her "world" revolves around things she finds important at any given minute. And, her memory isn't good so talking about my books is something I'd have to repeat many times.

I know she supported me and still would, in anything I did or do. That's special for me.

At age 91, I'm just grateful she was able to celebrate another Mother's Day. My questions now are based on her needs and wants. She's given me a lifetime of advice, counseling, and support. I'm very blessed!

April Showers, Diamonds, Daisies, My Birthday! by Marianne Stephens

Yes, it's my birthday! And although I'm OLD, I still celebrate. I love the month of April...new beginnings and a new year older for me.

"April Showers Bring May Flowers"...well, okay, but flowers are already blooming. Warmer weather is a treat. But, we do have to watch the stormy weather since it's tornado season in the Midwest.

"Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend"...sure. Wonderful to look at and so many terrific diamonds in jewelry settings to choose from. For me, the only diamond I wear is in my engagement ring. Somehow as the years have gone by, I've become less interested in wearing jewelry. I have a few more diamond pieces, but do I need to wear them to write? Do the laundry? Go food shopping?

Colors of Diamonds:
white
chocolate/brown
yellow
pink
blue
red
orange
purple
and more!
White/clear diamonds are the most fascinating, but color ones certainly catch your eye.
Largest diamond found:
Cullinan Diamond: 3,106-carat diamond in Pretoria, South Africa.

The Daisy: good fortune and blissful pleasure.
Colors vary...not just white petals and yellow center!

I love all daisies and diamonds...how could anyone resist?

Enjoy April!

Guest Blog: Berengaria Brown: Plays Nicely With Others - to Produce an Anthology

Writing a book for an anthology or boxed set, is a little different from just writing a regular story. Normally an author can work on her own schedule, set her own priorities, and fit her writing on a particular book in whatever order she chooses.

But when working with other authors there are many other constraints. Since all the editing of all the stories has to be completed by a set date not everyone can turn their completed book in at the last minute. The same with every other stage of the book. Authors have to be aware of the constraints on other members of the group and readjust their schedules to cater for it.

The group I worked with for the production of “Naughty List” and then “Naughty Hearts”was extremely cooperative and all decisions were made by a poll. Fortunately everyone did play nice and there were never winners or losers, just group decisions.

Together we decided when stories had to be turned in, when edits and proofreading were to be completed, what the book title would be, and which versions of the artwork we liked.
That’s a lot of decisions, with an enormous potential for conflict and upset creative people. However the group worked really well together and the books have turned out very well. “Naughty List” has received five star reviews and “Naughty Hearts” has just released.

Prologues and Epilogues - Do You Like/Want Them?

I've often wondered if readers enjoy reading prologues and epilogues in romance books. As a reader, I like reading a prologue, especially if it sets up the story. Reading epilogues gives a future "look" into the hero and heroine's tale and takes me beyond the "Happily-Ever-After" ending so I can witness for myself just how their future unfolded.

I wrote one book using a prologue. When I first thought about writing "Streets of Dreams"(by Marianne Stephens), using a prologue popped into my head as the best way to gain reader interest right away. The prologue is in the killer's point of view, and I hoped it would capture a reader's immediate attention.

Epilogues. I've written them in my nonfiction books, but not in any romance books. Maybe I like finishing a fictional romance story so that no epilogue is needed...the reader can be fully satisfied just with my story's end?

But, I like reading both prologues and epilogues. I like that glimpse into the past and future. A prologue can eliminate some "backstory" insertions in the book so can be helpful to the writer. Epilogues can be helpful for those writing a series...an author can use this technique to hint at the next series book and inspire curiosity and interest. Or, for single titles, it can just give the reader a "little something extra" about what happens after that final chapter.

What do you prefer? Do you enjoy reading/writing Prologues? Epilogues? Both? Neither?
