Leaving 2015 behind...

This past year was as many years before, a year of change and possibilities, a year of growth and a year of just plowing through the tough times because I believed it had to get better. I’m old enough to know that I shouldn’t tempt fate by asking how much worse it could have been because every time I do that the universe reminds me that it has a sense of humor and that’s not always a good thing.

I don’t usually make New Year’s resolutions because I know myself well enough to know that if I somehow didn’t accomplish them all, I would feel guilty. Who needs that much negativity?

After giving it some thought though, I realized that for some reason I’ve always felt as if whatever I’ve done “wrong” one year should be the focus of getting right the next. This year, that doesn’t make as much sense as it has in the past. I don’t want to drag the negative energy that came with all of last year’s baggage into 2016. Maybe this can be the year I simply close the door and start fresh.

This is a year of possibilities. Self-publishing is something new that I want to try. I already have one project in the works and am researching formatting and distribution options to use as a test. Work is only one part of my life though. This year, I plan to drink the wine and eat the chocolate, enjoy life and loved ones and not stress over whatever situation tries to test my sanity.

I’ve lived in jeans and sweatshirts and tennis shoes for most of my adult life. I don’t plan on ditching them anytime soon but I found a copy of an old book with patterns for what are charmingly called “Peasant Chic”. Oh, shades of my hippie days. Stay tuned, I may even take a selfie wearing some of the lovely turquoise jewelry my husband has given me over the years that I usually save for special occasions.

Make every day is a special occasion. That’s my motto for the coming year and my wish for you.

Until next month,
Happy Reading!

Chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate

Each year, the little town where I live has what's called a "Chocolate Walk" (gee - could it have anything to do with the chocolate factory in the middle of town?). People purchase tickets ($15.00 and all proceeds go to charity) and then can go to 30 different stores in town and have something chocolate. It starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 4 p.m. And there are rules - you have to wear the button that came with your ticket and you have to get your ticket stamped - one time to each place only. It is a day dedicated to decadence. There are truffles, brownies, cakes, cookies, smoothies, fruits dipped in chocolates, french toast, pretty much anything you can imagine - in chocolate. Most people have learned to bring along a container for their samples.

Yesterday was Chocolate Walk day. I don't participate in the walk since I have to work - which I did yesterday. By the time I got to work at 1, town was packed. Curb-to-curb people strolling in the beautiful weather, all with their eyes on their next chocolate fix. Our store featured a small restaurant that specializes in smoothies. (If your store isn't a food place, you bring in someone who is).

In addition to the chocolate draw, it's a day when a lot of people get shopping done for the upcoming holidays. We had a lot of customers in for the chocolate who also browsed our shelves and purchased books - which is always nice.

One thing I love to be able to do is recommend books to people. In our store, my specialties are Romance and YA paranormal, though the three of us who work there have knowledge of all the sections (it's a very small store, but very well known!). What stymies me all too often is people saying they love author A, who else would they like? I'm okay if it's an author I know, but too often, it's someone I'm not familiar with and I'm lost so I ask for the "type" of book they like and try to go from there.

So, my question to you is... what authors would you team up to recommend as similar in style?

Below are 12 Reasons Why CHOCOLATE Is Better Than SEX:
from http://www.flowgo.com/funny/2099_chocolate-sex.html

12 Reasons Why CHOCOLATE
Is Better Than SEX!
1. You can have chocolate in front of your parents.
2. Nobody starts rumors about who you shared chocolate with.
3. People of the same sex can share chocolate without being called names.
4. The word "commitment" doesn't scare off chocolate.
5. Chocolate is satisfying even if it's gone soft.
6. No matter what kind of chocolate you like, it's legal.
7. You can have chocolate with a whole group of friends without being obscene.
8. If you have to pay for your chocolate, it's not too expensive.
9. Chocolate is just as attractive when you're sober.
10. A big piece of chocolate lasts longer, but even a small piece is satisfying.
11. You can have chocolate in the office without upsetting your co-workers.
12. It's easy to GET chocolate any time you want!!!
Do you agree? Now, I love chocolate and maybe sometimes it's just a wonderful, satisfying treat, but could anything replace sex in your life?

My romance books are all about love and sex, and none of my heroines would ever trade their heroes for chocolate...having both at the same time maybe, but not just chocolate without their men!
