I'm writing again by Janice Seagraves

Good news, I'm writing again.

I talked to several of my writer friends about it, but the ones who are also suffering from writer's block are more stymied then ever with the isolate at home situation we have now.  Or they gave me that same advice I gave them...do something different, take a walk, hike, get out, take a class, try a new hobby...

Getting out is nearly impossible right now and as for starting a new hobby....well that's kind of hard to do, too.

I spoke to my husband and explained to him the last words I had written was when the phone rang with the news of my stepdad's death.

My husband said, "But, honey, that was two years ago."

"Two years?"

"Yes."

For some reason, that seemed to snap me out of my writer's block funk. I picked up where I left off with a story about a dragon inhabiting a woman.

It's a complicated story.

I sent it into my critique group and one of my critiquers absolutely loved it, unfortunately, the other said it needed some work, but the one who loved my story as incomplete as it was did the trick. I started to write more about that story.

I can't share it with you because I still have a long way to go until I finish it, but I can share one of my favorite published stories.

Year of the Cat

20504257_10203143660469208_231507552_n(1)
Blurb:
Morgan isn’t expecting romance when she accompanies her friend for a week of skiing, but when she meets Jared all bets are off.
Haunted by the loss of his parents, werecat Jared Catterick earns his keep working for the Catclaw Clan. Jared has secrets that he doesn’t mind sharing with a special lady, and he hopes Morgan is that special someone. When his past and present collide it’s worse than he imagined, and he’s forced to fight for his life.

Excerpt:
Auntie walked into the middle of the hollow. “We the Catcall Clan are gathered here together to witness a challenge. Called by Munch son of Tiger, who challenges Jared Catterick son of nobody.”
“I am the son of somebody,” Jared yelled. The sudden flow of anger had his heart pounding hard against his ribs.
“Who? What are their names?” Auntie crossed her arm and leaned on one hip and tapped a toe.
“I donna remember. I was too young when they killed them and took me away,” Jared muttered. “And she knows that.”
“Is Catterick your real last name?” Killer asked him in the canine speech.
“Aye. I donna remember much about me old life, but I never forgot me name.”
“Just tell her Mr. and Mrs. Catterick,” Killer said.
“Me parents were Mr. and Mrs. Catterick,” Jared said in a loud clear voice.
A few people around the hollow snickered.
Auntie gave a quick nod. “Jared son of Mr. and Mrs. Catterick. Munch challenges you for the death of his da, Tiger.”
Munch marched to Auntie’s side. He was every bit as big as his father. Well-muscled and not just tall but wide. Where Tiger’s hair was gray and white, Munch was blond and black. Another man accompanied him, his second, a tall, lanky male named Boyd. Jared knew him well, even though he was younger.
“Och. Here we go,” Jared told Killer and walked out into the middle of the hollow.
“He’s big,” Killer said in the canine speech.
“And ugly. I wouldna want to ride him into battle.”
Killer stayed at his side. “Psst.”
“Eh?”
“You can fight, right?” Killer asked.
“Aye.”
“Good to know.”
Auntie looked at both males. “Jared, as the challenged, you may decide on weapons and forms.”
“Human and no weapons,” Jared said.
“Very well,” Auntie said. “You may use your feet, hands, elbows and knees. Even your head if you feel the need.”
“What aboot sticks and stones?” Munch asked, his voice youthful.
“Will break my bones,” Jared said under his breath.
Killer snickered.
“No weapons,” Auntie shook a finger at Munch. “That includes sticks and stones.”
“Well,” Munch crossed his arms, “since I canna change into cat form, I think I should be able to use whatever I find in the hollow.”
“This isn’t a free-for-all, Munch. There is discipline to a challenge. You must remain in your human form and fight like a human. With this match, we’ll have a square go.”
“Not very cat-like.” Munch sniffed.
Auntie fisted her hands and leaned toward Munch. “You’re not a cat. You are a shifter. You shift between three forms. Now stay with one for the duration of the fight.”
“Doesn’t he understand?” Killer asked.
“A bit daft that one,” Jared muttered back. Munch doesn’t seem have a lot of self-control. Unlike Tiger who would have done exactly what Auntie said to the letter.
“Seconds, to the side.” Auntie pointed. “You may view the fight only. Do not interfere unless your partner is hurt or someone breaks the rules.”
Both Boyd and Killer trotted to edge of the clearing.
Jared stood facing Munch. Several feet separated them. Jared shook out his arms, moved his head from side to side, and loosened his muscles.
Auntie raised her hand and did a karate chop between them. “Now fight.”
“I swear on me da’s grave, I will end you!” Munch roared and the skin on his face boiled. His hands burst out of his gloves and feet from his boots. The shift made Munch bigger, tearing his clothes. He stopped in the in-between state, like movie werewolves of old, but in this case half-cat and half-human. The only thing that remained of his clothes was his black overall snow pants and even that stretched taunt across him. Extending his claws, he snarled and reached for Jared. “I want to see you bleedin’.”

Rotten Apple~ Kate Allenton

I'm so excited to share that the first book in my new series is available. It contains a bit of romance, supernatural abilities, and just enough craziness to keep you entertained.

He’s a by-the-book kind of guy, and she’s a lawbreaker at heart.

Gwen Bennett

As an operative with a hidden talent, I know how to keep my clients safe. It’s ingrained in my unusual DNA, and I’m damn good at my job.

So, when a thief swindles my grandmother out of a fortune and flees to a private island that’s by invite only, I’m determined to find access, even if that means taking a job I don’t want for a family I’d rather avoid.

Maxwell Pierce

She needs me.
There’s desperation in her eyes.
I have something she wants.
And I know it.
When my brother sends me to recruit Gwen Bennett for a job after she’s turned him down, I thought it would be more difficult to make a deal. Offering to share my island suite and my bed was more than enough to get her to agree. Now I just need to get her to realize that my sister's life is on line and that's worth more than any money she can hope to recoup.

They’ll have to get creative to keep from losing it all when lives, a family fortune, and their hearts hang in the balance.

Looking for Nirvana

Hello, Friends!

I can't believe it's June and my birthday month is almost over! I must say, I've earned every shimmering silver stripe in my hair--and I'm wearing them like a BOSS!

I periodically do live events--this year, I have two more and I will only be doing local events in 2020 (i.e., day trips). While ticketing is closed for Literary Love Savannah, you can still attend the public signing on Saturday, July 27, 2019. I'll also be live-and-in-person in Bucks County, PA for East Coast Authors Convention the first weekend in October. If you'll be attending any of these, drop me an email and we can make plans for coffee or a drink.

Which brings me to my topic for this month: anxiety.

I have social anxiety. I am perfectly happy to hole-up in my office and hold FB live chats or sit behind my monitor and chat with strangers. It doesn't take any effort, on my part. I can just DO it. But, when it comes to a live event, I don't have the familiar sounds or smells or a reliable Puck (one of my cats) to 'help' me through the physical symptoms.

I'm likely the quiet one, paying attention to the conversation and getting a 'read' on everyone. I don't have a lot to say in a group setting. But, in smaller groups? Totally a different story. And, if you put me in my element--making stuff up, because YEAH! Cards Against Humanity, trivia games, word games, etc.,--it makes the anxiety a little less because I feel like I know what to expect.

So, why the American Sign Language fingerspelling of LOVE? Watching ASL communication puts me at ease because it's something my daughters and niece do when they're together. I may not understand a lot--hardly any--but the patterns are familiar.

I like to say that I write to exorcise my own demons, but that isn't 100 percent truthful, either. Writing isn't therapy, either. But, what writing does--when a piece is finished--is make me feel like I'm not alone with my anxiety. At least I have my characters, right?

Now, I realize that there are a lot of readers with anxiety, too. If you're at a book event and I'm there, too, just know I'm as uncomfortable as you are, but I employ the fake-it-to-make-it tactic. And, I've got you. Feel free to hang out with me. We don't have to talk, although I'll probably ask you about what you like to read because I can talk about that for HOURS.

I turned 51 on my birthday. The field in which my f*cks are grown is barren. I don't have to pretend anymore--I can be my neurotic self. People can like me, not like me--whatever--because I'm not here to make everyone happy. At some point in our lives, we have to realize that making ourselves happy needs to come first. Then, everything else falls into place.

Much love,

Deelylah

Returning to my roots

As I approached my seven-year publishing anniversary, it's only right that I return to my roots and the series that started me on this journey. Unlike many authors, I didn't grow up wanting to write books, heck, I didn't even like reading them. So, when my sister took me to see a movie about a Vampire that Sparkles, of course I needed to know what happened next.

That launched my love for reading. After several hundred books and not finding the one I wanted to read, I wrote it. My Bennett Sister's series has strong family bonds, sisters that weren't afraid of taking care of themselves, and supernatural abilities and gifts.

That series is still a fan favorite to this day. So, when deciding what to do to celebrate how far I've come down this bumpy road I decided it was time to introduce the rest of the Bennetts.

He’s a by-the-book kind of guy, and she’s a lawbreaker at heart.

World Jumping...by Joanne Jaytanie

How do some authors jump from world to world and achieve wonderful outcomes so successfully? Every fiction story has a certain amount of world-building. It might not be extensive in stories such as a contemporary romance, but even so, the author builds a world for their characters to come to life in. Granted, there are different levels, for example, fantasy and Syfy writers create entire worlds, complete with their own vehicles, dwellings, clothing, atmosphere, food, traditions, vocabulary, just to name a few aspects.

I know authors who can work on multiple WIPs simultaneously, I’ve never been one of them…until now. But to be fair, my projects are all at different stages, and I’m not going back and forth between stories…at least not too much.

Salvaging Truth was published earlier this year. Yes, that book is published, but that hasn’t stopped my mind from constantly coming up with ideas, plots, what-ifs for book two…and three. I jot down ideas because let’s be honest…even when I say—“Oh, that’s good. I’ll remember that”—I don’t. So now I force myself to stop what I’m doing and write it down or take a note on my phone.

I’ve completed writing, Twice as Bad, book 2 for Miss Demeanor, P.I. and I’m working on edits as they come. This novella differs from book 1 in that it is longer, grittier, and has more twists.

I’ve been listening to Chasing Victory and I’m working my way through the series to reacquaint myself with the Winters Sister’s world and the copious number of characters. Yes, I do keep a book bible. Thank goodness I learned that strategy early on. Right about the time I was two-thirds of the way through writing Chasing Victory, and I couldn’t recall something important and had to search through the story. Book 5 will be in a brand new three-ring binder and the second book bible of the series. I try to update my bible as I write. However, that didn’t happen when I wrote, book 4, Corralling Kenzie and I’ll be adding it to my bible soon.

Each of these series has their own worlds. Fortunately, I have set all my stories in present time, which makes for slightly less world-building, except for The Winters Sisters. Once I dive into the Winters Sisters, I become immersed in their world and have a difficult time trying to write anything else. Theirs is a more intense world, especially when you add in the distinct supernatural abilities of all the major characters, along with sub-plots, personalities, Dobermans, and villains.

This is the closest I’ll ever get to writing multiple stories at once. To those of you writing gods and goddesses that find the process of world jumping very doable, even easy…I’m in awe of you.

Until next month…

Joanne

Salvaging Truth, Hunters & Seekers, Book One~by Joanne Jaytanie

I have found that many people believe writing fiction stories are less complicated because there’s no research involved. My writing process always begins with a single idea, one that inevitably leads me to research. Not only before I write the first sentence of my first draft, but continuously throughout my manuscript. Salvaging Truth is a prime example. I came up with an idea – one that I verified had yet to be viable-today. Then I added ex-SEAL team salvage divers, which also lead to interacting with the Coast Guard. If you’ve read my previous post, Fact or Fiction?...Both! You will discover how I accumulated and verified the details with regards to the military.

My fictional romantic suspense, with a few roots in real life, will hit the cyber-shelves on January 31st. Here’s your first look at what you will find between the pages.

Book Excerpt:
As she approached Sheridan Enterprises, the flag flying was at half-staff. Her vision misted as she fought back tears.
More than five hours had passed since Riley first listened to the voicemail. She pulled into the first open spot and killed her engine. Clutching the steering wheel with both hands, she dropped her head against it, closed her eyes, and struggled to steady her breathing as she replayed her mother’s call over and over in her mind.
Her mom was a seasoned diver and an excellent swimmer. Riley was sure she would be found—she just had to be.
Riley couldn’t begin to fathom how she would live if Mom wasn’t a phone call away.
There was a sharp rap on the window, making her jump. Wayne Samuels stood next to her door, arms crossed and staring down at her.
“Wayne, you scared the life out of me,” Riley said as she rolled down her window.
“What are you doing here, Riley? Didn’t my assistant assure you I’d keep you updated? There’s no news and I have a million things to do today. Our missing research vessel has left me with an unending list. The insurance company has already contacted the office. How the hell did they find out already? What are you doing here, don’t you have classes?”
She put her hand on the door handle, but Wayne refused to move out of the way. “Mom is not only your employee, she’s your friend. You don’t seem too upset about her disappearance.”
He sucked in a breath and sighed heavily as he let it out. “Of course I’m upset. You’re right, she is my friend. But she’s not the only one missing, nor my only friend on board.” He tried to appear sympathetic, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “There are eighteen other employees missing and eighteen families demanding information. And that’s to say nothing about the media firestorm this accident will cause for the company.” Wayne finally stepped back from her car.
Riley changed her mind; Wayne sounded plenty upset…about all the work that just landed on his desk. How could he be so self-centered?
“Now, tell me what exactly is being done.” Riley demanded.
“All the appropriate steps have been taken.” Wayne assured her. “The Coast Guard has been notified of the missing ship and the search is underway. We’re doing everything possible to locate the ship. There’s nothing here for you to do. Go teach your classes.”
“I have no intention of teaching today. My mother is on your missing ship. My assistant is filling in for me. I intend to remain here until I have answers.”
“I told you—” His body stiffened as he leaned closer with a warning glower.
Refusing to let him intimidate her, she lifted her chin and glared back at him.
“I heard you,” she snapped.
“Well, hell…fine. I don’t have the time to argue with you any longer. I’m on the way to my office. Let’s go.” He turned and walked away at a brisk clip, leaving Riley hurrying to catch up.
“Hold the elevator,” Samuels bellowed, as his heels snapped smartly across the gleaming marble floor of the spacious lobby. He stepped directly into the center of the elevator, forcing people towards the walls.
The doors closed directly behind Riley as she rushed in after him.
“Morning, Mr. Samuels,” Kathy, his secretary, greeted him as they exited the elevator. “Good morning, Ms. Rawlings.” Kathy handed Samuels a cup of coffee and cocked her eyebrows in Riley’s direction in a silent question.
Riley shook her head. Her stomach was still churning. Now it felt like a volcano ready to erupt. What she wouldn’t give for a fistful of antacids.
“I’m so sorry about your mother’s ship. I’m sure she’ll be fine, just fine.” Kathy reached out and patted Riley on her arm. “Mr. Eastin arrived early,” Kathy said. “He’s waiting in your office.”
Samuels threw his secretary a smoldering glare. “What have I told you about allowing people in my office unattended?” Samuels snapped.
“I didn’t think it would be a problem. He asked where he could sit to make phone calls. I thought he might like some privacy.”
Samuels ignored Kathy as he opened the door to his office. Riley followed. An imposing man sat in one of the high-backed guest chairs, head down, typing away on his tablet. His sable hair appeared nearly black, a riot of wavy layers, tight on the sides and back, longer and almost curly on top.
“Eastin,” Samuels said.
The man looked up, his magnetic topaz-colored eyes skimming over Samuels and locking onto Riley’s. “Hope you don’t mind. My day started at the crack of dawn. I finished my prior work early and decided to come straight here rather than return to my office.” His gaze never wavered. “You look like your mother.”
“Dagger Eastin, this is Riley Rawlings,” Samuels said as he walked to his desk and sat in his chair. “We’re planning on hiring Mr. Eastin’s company as our investigators for our missing research vessel.”
“Are you referring to the sunken vessel the Coast Guard is currently involved with?” Dagger asked.
“Yes,” Samuels said.
“Then I’m afraid my company will have to pass on your offer.”
“Excuse me. Aren’t you a salvage and investigation company?” Samuels frowned.
“We are, yes. However, we’ve already been contracted by San Diego Police Department to assist them in this investigation.”
“What! Why is the SDPD already involved? Whatever caused our ship to sink, it was an accident.”

Until next month...

Corralling Kenzie by Joanne Jaytanie

Corralling Kenzie, book four of Winters Sisters series, was my first win in the Chanticleers International book awards. Corralling Kenzie won Paranormal in 2016. I wrote the first draft of this book during NANO. I've yet to repeat that feat.

Excerpt:

Kenzie was closing the distance to the horse when something shot past her face. A blur of motion off to her left and something huge knocked her to the ground. A massive body crushed her into the mud and knocked the air out of her lungs. Her instincts kicked in and she thrashed her arms and kicked her legs. Nearly breathless, she refused to give in and continued squirming and trying to get away.

“Stop struggling,” growled the strange man. “Kenzie. Stop. I’m trying to keep you from getting shot or worse—killed,” he hissed.

She froze at the use of her name. Who was this man and how did she know him? She got a glimpse of light brown hair. She’d never seen him before in her life, and yet something tugged at her deepest memories.

The stranger jumped up, yanking Kenzie with him.

“This way,” he commanded.

“I’m not going anywhere with you!”

Another bullet whizzed past her shoulder.

“We don’t have time for this. You need to do what I say, if you want to live to see tomorrow.”

“How do I know this person is shooting at me? I have no idea who you are and for all I know, they’re really trying to shoot you.”

He started to run and dragged her along with him. “Answer me this. Do you really think I would try and rescue you, if I was the one being shot at? Sane people would put as much distance between themselves and the shooter, the hell with any bystanders.”

He picked Kenzie up, threw her over his shoulder, and took off at an inhuman pace. He dropped down a shallow ridge and laid her down beside him. She attempted to get up and he yanked her back down.

“What the hell are you doing? Are you trying to get yourself killed?” the man snarled.

“Listen, buster, for all I know, you’re trying to kill me, too.”

“Jesus, you are as stubborn as you always were. I’m not the one trying to hurt you.”

She rubbed at her sore arm.

“Sorry about your arm. You were being bullheaded. Don’t you know who I am?”

She squinted and studied him. The planes of his face, the shape of his grey eyes, they reminded her of—Father. No, that’s impossible. It can’t be, can it? “Marcus?”

“Yes,” he replied. His features remained stoic.

“It can’t be. Where were you all these years? Why haven’t you contacted me? Why didn’t you come home? Mom and Dad said you were dead!”

I'm excited to be working on book five in this series and plan to release it later this year.

I'm currently in edits for book one in my new romantic suspense three book series: Salvaging Truth, Hunters & Seekers series.

Until next month...

Writing Blues - #LynnCrain #AmWriting #MysticRealms #RB4U

What’s a writer to do when they can’t write?

I have experienced this many times and most of them have been around the time when I have just finished a deadline of some sort. However, recently I have found I’m not up to my usual 5K per day and I’ve had to go back to some interesting strategies I’ve developed years ago to get me back on track.

More importantly, I’ve been recently asked that question by other writers and I’ll tell you exactly what I tell them: It depends what you’re writing and what the problem is. And this is very true. You must be able to figure out just why you aren’t writing. It can be a variety of things which keep you from your goals.

First, if you’re ill, you just do the best you can. Since I have allergy days quite frequently in both the spring and the fall, I make sure my daily word count is exceeded on some days so that I can make up for those days of the pounding head. Illnesses of any kind aren’t good and you must heal yourself before you can heal your writing.

Second, if there is a family issue, you need to spend time taking care of the problem so you can free your mind to write. Last year was one of my worst years ever as far as writing goes because my husband had cancer. I had to do other things to keep the writing alive from classes to reading to just trying to keep it all together some days.

Third, know your limitations. Sometimes you have to give writing a break to replenish the creativity well. It doesn’t happen often but you need to evaluate just what’s going on. If you determine this is the issue, set yourself a time limit and once that is over, slowly work yourself back into writing.

Now, if it’s because I can’t get my Muse going, that in itself is a completely different thing. There are a few techniques I use to try and get things flowing again. Here’s my list:

1.     Listen to music – when nothing comes, I will sit down and listen to music as I attempt to write. Again, the type of music depends upon what I’m writing. Something classical just won’t do if I’m writing a battle scene so I make the music appropriate to what I’m doing.

2.    Write anything – the day doesn’t always start good and I don’t always start on my story right away. Sometimes, the best I can do has nothing to do with what I’m writing. So I just write. Usually by the end of the second hour, I’m back on track for the story.

3.    Plot a new story – I have a lot of series going and sometimes the best thing for me is to move away from the story I’m working on and start plotting the next one. For many of my stories, I am a pantser which means I just work it out in my head and sit down to write. However, when I’m working on a series I have to make sure that I don’t violate something I’ve previously done in the series. This also allows me to plan new and different things for the books. And it also just gets me back into writing.

4.    Read – I can’t say this enough, read the genre that you write. If you’re doing urban fantasy, read urban fantasy, if you’re doing futuristic, read futuristic. You must know your market and you will never gain that knowledge unless you read the genre.

5.    Take care of yourself – What I mean by this is get a massage, take a walk, talk to your kids, make love with your husband or significant other. It can’t all be about the writing because without you there would be no writing.

If none of these techniques work, then try to remember why you became a writer. Grasp that same joy and use it to elevate yourself to feel the creativeness rise in you. Embrace it when it arrives and make sure you nurture your muse as much as you can.

Being creative can be a finicky business and as a writer, you may need to do a variety of things before you can again create the stories you love. Just never give up on your dream to bring those stories to life because if you don’t, they will never get written!

Now on to the good stuff… earlier this month, I had a release within the anthology called Mystic Realms, and my story was called Avenging Aingeal. Here’s the blurb for the anthology and my story as well the buy link. It is currently free at Kindle Unlimited. Also, I do believe that there’s still a $50 gift certificate up for grabs and all you need to do is to comment for you chance at one of these two blog posts:

and

What goes bump in the night? What causes you a fright? While the answers for each may vary, I promise that these stories will not leave you wary.

So, don’t be afraid. Come, step inside our realm. Allow the mysticism of romance in many shapes and forms fall over you like a veil of sweet, soothing, spine tingling comfort.

Good luck in all your writing endeavors. See you next month!

June 19 is a Big Day in our Family

Yesterday was quite a celebration, and I got off to a late start today. But, my garden is watered, since it will be another close to 100 degrees.

I wrote this for my FB post of today, and will embellish it:

46 years ago today. Honeymooned all summer camping from the UK, throughout Europe, Italy, Yugoslavia, along the Riviera to Barcelona, where this was taken. Came home in September for Sonoma State classes. Broke.

We did it all on $900, including $400 for two new Mario Monte bicycles we had handmade for us in a little village near Milan. The most we ever paid for a campsite was $1.55 in Spain at a place that had 7 swimming pools. Traveled with two German guys, a South African couple, an Aussie couple, two Irish guys who had to go to mass every day, and a married couple from the Netherlands for a couple of those weeks.

Slept in a field of sunflowers in France and never stayed in a hotel one time. Cooked all but 3 meals. Those were the days when Americans were not well liked because they were stoned, sitting in fountains all over the place. With our Dutch plates, we let people think we were from Holland.

Met a group of Navy SEALs and their wives traveling by MC before their next big deployment. DejaVu for me. Little did I know, but I loved talking to them and knew there was a presence about them. My husband had to point out who they were and how special they were.

How innocent the world seemed then, but with our whole lives ahead of us, so much was possible. And so much of those dreams were realized. Our oldest daughter turns 40 today, born on our anniversary, another blessing.

The whole trip had lots of memories, like my husband eating tuna fish sandwiches in Spain while we were watching a bull fight (none of the rest of us could stomach anything), the adventures getting lost, which turned out to be the only bad part about the time overseas. We finally reached that point where we just wanted to drive around a corner and see something we expected to see.

Now, 46 years later, I have 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys. I have five grands, with a 6th on the way in October. That will make 3 boys and 3 girls, of course. Everything in perfect balance!

When I look back on those early married days, what a foretelling it was to meet the SEALs and their wives on that trip. It shows me how life is full of circles, and we are turning and coming back to our places of origin every day, every minute of the day. The colors are brightened, and the texture richer and richer. The tapestry of our lives is where we get the best of our stories as writers. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Happy June 19 to you as well!
