Meet…  Zane Kelly

Zane Kelly is the kind of guy that is all muscle and well put together in a more subtle fashion. He still wears his military hairstyle but shows the rebel inside by allowing it to be longer on top. His intense caramel-colored eyes coupled with his brooding manner can cut you deep to the core.

Read more about Zane in Joanne Jaytanie’s Dogs of Fortune available exclusively in Romance Books 4 Us World “Soldiers of Fortune.”

The Baker Corp. has recruited Blair Sellick, a nationally known dog trainer with truly phenomenal skills, to provide exceptional training for service dogs. The project would supply highly intelligent animals as partners for victims of PTSD and other disabilities. Or would it?
The answer has disappeared along with Blair, her fellow dog trainers, and all the dogs.
Ex-SEAL and canine handler Zane Kelly is done with war, with dogs, and with the Soldiers of Fortune. Coerced, cajoled, and eventually intrigued, Zane finally capitulates to the Soldiers of Fortune recruiters for just one project, to find Blair Sellick. Willow's Discovery, The Winters Sisters, Book 3

Last weekend I attended the Chanticleer Authors Conference. I enjoy this conference because it’s a mix of authors from a wide range of genres including, mystery, thriller, horror, children’s books, non-fiction, young adult, and international attendees. It’s always interesting to listen to an author who writes in a different genre. The highlight of this conference is the Saturday awards banquet. There are thousands of books entered into the writing contest and includes international entries.

I was thrilled when Willow’s Discovery, The Winters Sisters, Book Three, made the short-list in Paranormal and extremely honored on Saturday to be awarded First in Category for Paranormal. Thank you, Chanticleer Book Reviews for your recognition of Willow’s Discovery.

EXCERPT:

As she reached her office door, another bolt of lightning screamed through the atmosphere at the same instant a startling, explosive boom of thunder rattled the building. The lights around her popped out and plunged Willow into total blackness.
“Great. I guess this wasn’t my best plan.” She reached out for the wall and followed it slowly back to the door. The rain fell in sheets and blocked out all possibility of moon- or starlight. She bumped the door with the tip of her boot and felt for the lock and handle. “I should’ve at least thought to bring a flashlight,” she said, scolding herself. She stumbled down the steps, nearly falling on her face a time or two. She must be within inches of the cart. The cart was here; it had to be. This is where she left it. She shuffled in one direction and then turned and traveled back in the opposite direction. She left the cart here, right here.
Murky, dark energy overwhelmed her senses, except the energy didn’t feel natural, it felt—synthetic; at this precise moment she realized…she was not alone. “Oh my god – Wyatt!

* * * *

“I’m awake,” Wyatt said, and popped up as he came fully alert. He’d fallen asleep on the cot in the break room. He meant to go home right after the meeting; instead, he downed a couple of aspirin for the blasted headache that continued to linger the entire day and decided to rest his eyes for a minute or two. Blackness filled his vision, and he rubbed his eyes to make sure they were indeed open. He closed his eyes, focused, felt the change, and opened them once again, his surroundings as clear as midday. Still, he must’ve dreamt, because he could swear he heard Willow.
Wyatt!
“What the hell?” Not possible. He actually heard Willow’s voice. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and squinted at the glowing screen, the light much too bright for his night vision. He thought maybe his phone had connected to Willow’s and he heard her on speaker. But the screen was blank. Panic slithered down his neck and made him twitch. He punched the speed-dial button.
Willow took off at a full run. In the pitch black it was nearly impossible to stay upright. She managed to widen the gap between herself and the hideous energy. Her phone vibrated in her jeans pocket. She debated answering, but she didn’t want the person who pursued her to see the light; the glow would shine like a beam. She stumbled, fell, and rolled down a small hill. Once she regained her bearings, she knew where she was and crawled sideways until she came in contact with the first sword fern. She crawled into the ferns as the phone vibrated again. She reached into her pocket and fought to free it from her drenched jeans.
“Wyatt?” she barely whispered into the receiver.
“Hi Willow. I know it’s late and I’m sorry, but—”
“Please help me! Someone is chasing me! I can’t see them but I know it’s someone menacing and…”
“I’m on my way. Where are you?” he asked as he jumped into his boots and threw on a camo rain slicker.
“I ran out the front door of my building. I thought I headed toward the security shack; somehow I got turned around. I’m in the large grouping of sword ferns—”
“I know where you are. Stay down, stay quiet, and don’t move. I’m coming in hot—it means I’ll have my gun drawn—so stay put.”

Until next month.

Meet Payton Winters...

After the sudden death of her parents, the daunting task of keeping the Winters Corporation afloat fell squarely on the shoulders of Payton. While Payton’s sister, Victory left the family business to forge her own scientific breakthroughs and Willow found unending excuses to stay at the Winters company in London, Payton was the anchor that kept their family corporation together. Now, with the return of her sisters, the discovery of Victory’s enhanced psychic abilities, and a Special Ops team assigned as security, life on the Winters campus is anything but business as usual. Follow Payton’s journey in her story, Payton’s Pursuit.

Excerpt:

As she reached the first bungalow, she experienced a searing hot stab to her temple. She rubbed a hand across it to try and ease the pain. “Now what?” she muttered.
She parked the cart and started to the area where the builders worked.
“Collin, knock it off,” a booming male voice sounded.
She looked to her right and saw the lights in Morgan’s bungalow flash on and off. Payton headed for the disruption. She would not have these men destroy the bungalow before it was even a month old. She stormed up to the door and knocked, and was rewarded with a crash.
“Collin, I’m serious man. If you don’t pull yourself together, you are really going to piss me off,” Morgan said.
Payton stepped inside. Before she could confront the two men, a hockey skate whizzed past, missed her head by scant inches, and crashed through the bay window. Morgan ducked and bobbed to stay out of the trajectory of flying objects. Collin stood in the middle of the room, sweat pouring down his body and danger and destruction radiating off him. Payton’s mouth fell open as she struggled to process the scene. She yelped and ducked as the twin to the first hockey skate hurtled straight toward her, causing the banging inside her skull to rise to a fevered pitch.
Both men turned in the direction of the sound. The remainder of the objects in play dropped to the floor. Collin, wild-eyed and panting, glared at her for a heartbeat and then turned and propelled himself out of the broken bay window. Morgan rushed over to Payton and scooped her up from the floor. Using his foot, he kicked a chair right side up and gently placed her down. He hurried to the kitchen and grabbed a towel and glass. He filled the glass with water and soaked the towel. He returned to Payton and placed the towel across her forehead as he handed her the glass.
“Are you okay?” Morgan asked. “You weren’t hit, were you?”
She struggled to regain her equilibrium and sit upright. “I’m fine—really,” Payton said. “What in the world were you two fighting about?”
“We weren’t fighting. Collin had a bad day and was telling me about it. I was distracted, trying to get myself ready to go running, and I guess I didn’t realize he was getting upset. Something triggered and he flipped out. Regrettably, you walked in on him almost in full wolf mode.”
     “Almost—” Payton said.
“Believe me, it gets a lot worse. If you are really okay, I should head out to find him. Victory will have a cow if she finds out Collin is running amuck.” Morgan rubbed absently at his eyebrow. “You aren’t going to tell her, are you?”
“No, but I think she will figure it out when she sees this place.”
Payton caught the worry as it flashed across Morgan’s face.
“Don’t worry, Morgan. Go and find Collin. I’ll get the builders to replace the windows tonight. I expect the two of you to clean this place up and behave yourselves for the rest of the evening.”
“You have my word,” Morgan said as he started for the door. “As soon as I can locate him, I’ll drag his sorry ass back here.”

I hope you enjoy Payton's story.
Until next month...

Guest Blog: Joanne Jaytanie: Getting Seasonal Story Ideas

You don’t have to hike the Mojave Desert or sail the Pacific Ocean to create your next story. Each day is unique and filled with experiences whether grandiose, minuscule or somewhere in between. A story idea can even develop from a mere kernel of a memory or a situation you found yourself in. That idea can become the back story of your story arch, or a place to start.
When I decided to write my Christmas story, I wanted to engulf the reader in the feeling of the season. The lights and colors that shimmer and shine everywhere you look. The smell of cinnamon, hot apple cider, a crackling fire, the fresh cut evergreen trees. These thoughts sparked a memory from my childhood. When I was a small child the yearly hunt for our Christmas tree was a tradition I loved. You see, the tree didn’t come in box or from parking lot vendor; it came from nature’s store.

We would pile into the car and head out to my grandmother’s house. She lived out in the country, surrounded by evergreen trees and nature. We bundled up in layers upon layers of clothes which covered every part of our body, except our eyes and mouths. White puffs of breath would slip out from under our toasty scarves. The adults would grab the saws and we headed out for our trek up the mountain, dredging through the three or more feet of pristine sparking snow to find our perfect tree.

After a long debate on which tree would proudly stand in our home, it would be chopped down, tied with a rope. We would each take our turn hauling it back down the mountain. It was a day of hopes and dreams, frozen toes and noses. I wouldn’t have traded a single moment for anything in the world.

The simple reminiscence of the Christmas tree hunt triggered the inspiration behind the Forever Christmas collection. My hope for the reader is it will bring back fond memories, or inspire new ones.

Immerse yourself in the spirit of the holidays!

BLURB:
The western Washington town of Glenville is threatened with the possible loss of their 100 year old Christmas tree farm to an outside corporation. Four friends join together to keep the tradition alive and create new opportunities with the rebirth of the Forever Christmas tree farm.

As a teenager Juliet Swanson couldn’t wait to get out of her home town of Glenville, WA and move to the big city. She moved to California to attend college, and then went to work for a large corporation. It didn’t take her long to realize that clawing her way up the ladder at others expense wasn’t the life she wanted. She moved back to her home town, fell in love with the ‘family feel’ of living there and has a close knit group of girlfriends she shares everything with. Now if she could only find a way to make her dream career a reality she would have it all, except for Mr. Right.

Colton Weatherly is a city guy who eats and breaths his career as a project manager for a acquisitions corporation. He is assigned to acquire the Glenville Ski Resort, along with the Schwartz Christmas Tree Farm. By his estimation it will be an easy close, and he plans to wrap it up in one short weekend. What he didn’t plan on was butting heads with Juliet, who is not the average ‘local girl.’

Reflecting on one’s life can sometimes lead to discovering a path you never knew existed.

Interview of Author Joanne Jaytanie: Birth of a Character

“Hey, I know her…He sounds just like my brother… I’m sure that character was fashioned after me.”

Do writers really use people they know as characters in their books, or are they created in our mind? I can’t speak for everyone, but I use a mixture. I’m a people watcher. At the park, Movie Theater, mall, coffee shop, or airport, I love to watch people interact and react to each other. I pick up on their quirks, irritations, and positive traits. When something catches my eye, I whip out my iPad and make a short note. I have a file full of notes and when I start to give a character life, I will often pull from that file to round out his or her personality.

I have to admit, I don’t always use strangers. I have been known to incorporate a few traits of friends into the mix. For example, the idea of The Winters Sisters Series rolled around in my mind for a while, with one missing link, I couldn’t come up with my first heroine. One day my Veterinarian girlfriend, Cindy and I were sitting on the floor of an exam room talking while we waited for the acupuncture to do its thing on one of my Dobermans. We chatted about everything we both did for our canine family and what they meant to us. It was that very moment all the pieces fell into place and Victory Winters was born; she was based on my very dear and caring friend.

So, I guess my advice is always play nice. Because you never know, someone might be watching you….

They continue to meet every Tuesday, but secretly change their name to The Love List. They write the names of a few single men and drop them into a basket. They women draw a name and promise to ask the man on a date. The Love List seems a success as one by one the women find their true love. Except in Laura’s case, date after date she is plagued with losers. She is certain the basket is cursed.

Travis Jerome is new to town. He notices a “Help Wanted” sign outside of a Victorian house and jumps at the chance to get back to his roots and have the feel of a hammer in his hand. He gets an extra bonus when he meets the attractive owner of the home, Laura Tate. Unfortunately she doesn’t appear to have the least bit of interest in him.

For something to last a lifetime it must start with a strong foundation and build up from there.
