Diary of a Workaholic - Post by Suzanne Rock #RB4U

The theme for this month is diaries. I used to keep a diary when I was a kid. In it I wrote about all of the important stuff in a fourth grader's world: who was talking to whom, which boys were the cutest, and which teacher liked to give homework over the weekend. (What a meanie! *shakes fist*)

As an adult, I don't keep a diary, but a schedule. Those who know me laugh at my computer full of spreadsheets and office full of Post-It notes. What they don't realize is that without them, I'm lost.

I'll let you in on a little secret: I get easily overwhelmed. It doesn't take too many tasks to pile up before I'm crawling under the covers and sobbing into my pillow. To-Do lists, schedules and deadlines do more than help me get organized. They help me break down my responsibilities into bite-sized pieces so I don't get overloaded.

Task lists are especially handy this time of year. In the fall, my two girls are heading back to school, and all of their after-school activities are beginning. Forms need to be signed, summer projects need to be completed, and signups for extra-curricular activities occur. (Limited space, better hurry!) My youngest daughter also has her birthday on September first, so yeah, you can see how I tend to get overwhelmed.

I have been creating To-Do lists for years and over time I've come up with a few key things that make them work for me.

1) Keep the list managable. Don't write down twenty tasks because you won't have time to finish them all. When there are items left on your "to-do" list at the end of the day, it can really put a damper on your motivation.

2) Keep it simple and specific. A goal like "clean the house" can be overwhelming. Try breaking it down into bite-sized chunks like "clean the kitchen" or "do one load of laundry." A good rule of thumb is to make sure you can finish each task in an hour timeframe.

3) Schedule time for youself. It is unrealistic to think that you can work twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Suffering from mental and emotional burnout isn'tpretty, and the best way to stop it is to work on your overall health. On your schedule, make sure you do one thing for yourself each day. It could be as simple as "take a 30 minute walk," or "read a short story." By taking time for yourself, you ensure you are mentally and physically ready to deal with the tasks on your list tomorrow.

4) Schedule time with loved ones. This is just as important. Time goes by so fast. You don't know how long you are going to live on this earth, so make sure you spend some time each day with those people who are important to you.

5) Be rigid, yet flexible. When you create a schedule or a task list, try not to get distracted. Focus on one item at a time and work your way down the list until you have accomplished everything you want to do. At the same time, know that life happens. Emergencies come up, plans change, and people show up unexpectedly. Be easy on yourself. If something happens and you can't finish your task list, don't beat yourself up over it. There is always tomorrow.

How about you? Do you live and die by task lists and schedules like me, or are you more spontaneous? Tell me about it in the comments section. I'd love to hear from you!

Dear Diary with Harlie Williams #RB4U @marika67

Dear Diary,

What’s been going on?  I know, I haven’t written in you in almost 40 years.  I hang my head in shame for this but don’t think that I have forgotten about you.  Life happens and unfortunately, I never did write down what has happened since I closed you forever.

But I will try to make it up to now.  I kept you because at times, I couldn’t talk to anybody about my feelings or what was happening at the time.  I can look back and realize it was just the normal drama that comes along with being a kid and then teenager.  Now, though, I need you more than ever.  I need somewhere to be able to put my thoughts, hopes and dreams down again.

You never judged me, laughed at me or tried to talk me out of something.  You let me vent, cry and sometimes laugh when I wrote.  I need to find that feeling of freedom and not be so anxiety ridden.  Oh yes, as an adult I suffer from anxiety.  Too much of it as a matter of fact.  You always made my anxiety and fears go away.

I make this promise that I will start writing to you again.  I need the release that unfortunately other people don’t seem to understand about me.  Yes, even my family.  They just tell me to get over it and move on.  Sometimes I can’t and being told that my feelings have no worth…well, that stops now.

Love,
Harlie

So why the diary entry?  Well, I do suffer from anxiety and to be honest…my husband doesn’t get me sometimes.  He doesn’t understand at times about writing, blogging, reviewing, etc.  Plus, forget about my girlfriends where I live now.  My online life is like a different planet to them.  But in a good way.  They don’t judge me about what I’m doing and I don’t bring it up.  I have been asked to join some book clubs now and those will start in the fall.

In closing, I’m not going to attach anything book related.  Why?  Because I’ve asked for my rights back and my one and only story will be revised and expanded in the next couple of months.  The blurb and cover will change.  In fact, my story is in the hands of a very capable editor to see how I can actually add a “beginning” to my little short.  Oh yes, the beginning.  Plus, I need to change it from 1st POV to 3rd

Wish me luck on re-working my one and only book.  I’ll need it.

Author Bio:
When she is not trying to be Super Blogger and reviewing for her own site, Harlie is a stay at home with a 5th grade son that keeps her busy with all of his stuff.  Married for 10 years to her own hero and still madly in love with him, she wouldn’t change a thing about her life.  Okay, maybe living in Ireland or New Zealand but those are just pipe dreams.
A certifiable sports nut, she craves college football (OU Sooners and Texas A&M Aggies), Baseball (Texas Rangers and Houston Astros), Dallas Stars hockey and Houston Texans football.  After working for the Dallas Stars Hockey Club for 5 years and naming her son after Brian Leetch you’d think she write a hockey story.  Nope, been there, done that and the t-shirt is a rag.  She prefers just to watch the game now.  Less stress.
Harlie loves to hear from readers and other authors.  You can find her on Facebook most days.  Unless, she’s sitting in the carpool line.  The bane of her existence.

Dear Diary with @CharJGordon #Romance #RB4U

Dear Diary,

There’s an old expression called there’s plenty of fish in the sea but I know for sure the boy you met in high school  is sure to be the real one. How do I know, you might ask? I know because I met him when I was fifteen and we fell in love. Yes, we did. And after that, no matter how many boys I went out with, HE was the one I loved. For my sixteenth birthday he gave me a gold ankle bracelet and when I graduated high school, he gave me a bracelet with his name on it. It said Love, Buddy 1948. The Korean War had begun and he joined the Strategic Air Command as a pilot.

That was long ago. We married, had too many children, never argued, our motto was marriage is one long conversation. He died suddenly at fifty eight. I love him still. Why do I tell you all this? Because I’ve just finished a book titled When Double Becomes Single, a journey similar to mine, one I hope heals other widows and widowers as they find their way in the  world after losing their loved one.
Blurb:

Before that awful night, Sharon Michaels had never even driven herself at night... eaten at a table for one... or made plans on her own. Alone after losing her husband – her rock – she’s left with a business to run, a great son and his wonderful wife and children – far away in Denmark, a bad son and his nasty wife, and two teenage grandchildren she barely knows. Step by step, she finds her way into the world of singles and learns to Survive and Thrive!

Dear Diary -- Maybe Not!

As a girl, the only diary I kept was in my head. Not that I had terrible thoughts to hide. My mother didn’t believe children should have secrets, so when my younger brother started a diary at the age of ten, she forced it open, read it, and punished him for his private musings. I learned young that it was much better to relegate my memories and desires to memory.

Famous people, on the other hand, run the risk of diaries from their earlier years someday being made public, sold to the highest bidder, or made into a movie. Here are some of the most famous diaries in our times:

President Harry Truman – 1945. He wrote that ‘we’ have discovered the most terrible bomb in the history of the world. Weeks later, the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.

General George S Patton – 1944. He believed battle fatigue was cowardice, and slapped weary soldiers in the face when he visited them in the hospital.

Ernest Hemmingway – 1908. At nine years of age he prophetically wrote, “I intend to travel and write.”

Josef Goebbels – 1925. In his diary he described Hitler at their first meeting as having big blue eyes like stars. “I am in heaven” he said, and the following year wrote in his diary, “Adolf Hitler, I love you.”

Kurt Cobain – 1992. He revealed that he felt incredibly guilty for having abandoned his original fan base.

Virginia Woolf – 1941. She told her diary, “and then there was nothing,” the day before her suicide.

Anne Frank – 1944. This young Jewish girl in Nazi Germany described her life while she and her family hid from the Nazis in the hopes of avoiding the concentration camps.

Lewis Carroll (true name Charles Dodgson). This famous author, who wrote The Adventures of Alice In Wonderland, kept many diaries, some of which disappeared. Pages were mysteriously removed, possibly to protect the privacy of the young Alice Liddell, whom he is said to have proposed to when she was 11 years old. Whispers of pedophilia surrounded him for many years.

Samuel Pepys – He wrote detailed historical accounts of events in London, England in the 1660s in shorthand in his diary, including the Great Plague and the Great Fire.

Some of the most scandalous diaries were written by:

Anaïs Nin – who wrote of her sexual fantasies of friends and loves vividly;
Catherine Millet, curator and Art press editor-in-chief wrote her memoir of her sexual exploits;
The Marquis de Sade, whose sexual scandals led to exile;
Anne Lister, a wealthy British land owner who was a lesbian. She married a woman in the 19th Century;
Lord Byron, whose diaries were so steamy his publisher burned them.

How about you? Did you pour your heart out to your diary, or did you hold back some information you would not have wanted anyone else to ever read?

Dear Diary.....Reflections on Life #Musings #RB4U

Dear Diary... Reflections on Life

Hello I'm Melissa Keir and welcome to day of the month where I get to be witty and hopefully give you something to think about. August is my birthday month and also the time when most children go back to school. For me, it's also been a time of reflection. At Romance Books 4 U, we are talking about diaries. I didn't really have one since I had four nosy sisters who loved to read and share my secrets, but I did use my computer as a diary...sharing my fears, pain, and silly moments.

Since August is about Diary and reflection... Here's my question to you.....

Sometimes the words can inspire you to step outside the box, enjoy life, savor things around you and give into those moments of quirky happiness.

 The words can pick you up when you are feeling down or make you pause and think about what's going on around you. We are not here alone and one word, smile, or gesture can go a long way!

Sometimes the words can remind us not to worry about what others said (even what we ourselves say in our head about our weight, nose, figure, brains...). We are so much harder on ourselves....

.....And others are just so jealous that they use words to strike out and in hurting others, they can make themselves feel better. Just remember that when you look back on those days and the words, feelings, memories....
You were so much more than the size of your clothes, being a cheerleader/band kid.... You are the product of all the pieces... the good... the bad... the silly... the weird... the smarts... the athleti
c....YOU... WONDERFUL AMAZING YOU!!

Thank you for sharing your insights today...I'd be hard-pressed to say it in only two words....So here's some leeway if you can't say it in only two words. Just share what you'd tell yourself....

Mine..... I'm happy with me and my life. (and that's what matters) :)

Musings of a Madcap Mind.....by Melissa Keir
It's not a romance novel but does feature your own happily ever after if you will only reach for it!!

One woman’s musings become another woman’s courage…

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you worry about the person you’ve become? Sitting down at the computer, Melissa spent many hours reflecting on her life, family, and relationships. These musings, recipes, and poems tell the tale of one woman's changing thoughts and feelings about life.

Come along with her as she explores her reflections, using her words which mirror her changes.

EXCERPT:
Birthdays….the word conjures up memories of balloons, cake and pin the tail on the donkey (weren’t those games always lame?). As a child, birthdays were second in importance of holidays. Only Christmas was more important. You would agonize over which friends to invite and what to put on your wish list.

Parents plan for these parties like a general planning for war. Each party needs to be different and better than last years (or the little girl’s down the street). I remember the year my daughter wanted a pool party. Her birthday is in May—not exactly pool weather in Michigan! So we rented two rooms at a local hotel and had our party there to my daughter’s delight and her friend’s envy!

As you get older, birthdays change. You dream of breakfast in bed, your favorite dinner (in a restaurant- not cooking it yourself!), and the PERFECT gift. Quickly this fantasy fades. Reality sets in and birthday just becomes another day. You still have laundry to do and bills to pay. It only takes one or two years to understand that birthdays are very different now that you are an adult and certainly as a mom. My first birthday after getting married was a shocker. Not only my husband forgot but my family did too! Only after listening to my crying for hours, did my husband pull a frozen pie out of the freezer, put candles on it, and sing happy birthday.

Some adults fear and dread their coming birthdays because they mark another year closer to old age and death. They fight getting older. Just go to the make-up isle of any store to see that. The cosmetics industry makes tons of money off that fear. I remember that my mom never would admit her true age. She would tell everyone (each and every year) that this was her 25th birthday. We weren’t quite that gullible. We would tease her about WHICH 25th birthday this one was.
