Guest Blog: Author @ColleenSMyers shares her new #YA #Teen release

It is too easy to tell!

Isn't it just.  Everything thinks writing is about telling a story, so thus, what is so wrong about actually telling that story?  My reply to that is always fairly simple.

You know how you feel when you walk down a forest path?  The crunch of the leaves underneath your feet. That quiet  in the woods, almost expectant, yet little whispers of sound all around you? The smell of the grass, sharp yet fresh, almost like after you mow the yard but richer? The burn in your legs as you trek uphill?

Yeah you know that feeling right?  Mainly because I described exactly what is was like and your own mind paints the picture of that forest there.  Whether it be the exact picture the author has in their mind, or it is that special place where you felt all those things.  It is much more real than just outright stating. I was walking through the forest.

And that is our job as authors. In fact, I have heard from family that the picture I put on pinterest of my character inspirations do not actually match the picture they develop in their minds and it makes me smile. Because each time they say that, I know they are into my story. That they connected and I did my job.

Not only do they have to be able to visualize what we are describing though, they also have to connected.  For example, I am in a critique group with friends.  One of my main areas of strength is in description. I had when a description reads off like a list.  He had dark hair, blue eyes and a lanky body.  To me, that isn't anything I can relate too. That is a body.

Instead I push for more.  His blue eyes twinkled at me as he brushed his midnight hair out of his eyes and leaned his ever so taut body back against the wall. The stretch of his jeans emphasized.... You get the picture? RIght?  Did I do my job?  You get an idea of what he looks like and a better idea of his personality.  Maybe he is a bit cocky, leaning back and displaying some such things... It is fascinating how easy it is to take something one-dimensional and make it more.

And it is also really, really hard to do all the time. Yes you have to occasionally tell, but without the show, it just wont be as fun!

Must Remember

Nineteen-year-old Elizabeth ‘Beta’ Camden is a survivor.
When the E’mani—those pale alien freaks—destroy Earth with a plague of madness and scoop up the remains, Beta is one of the ‘lucky’ ones. For years, she endures their tortures, experiments and games. Then one day, she manages to escape their ship with her life, and no memory of her time with them.
Stranded on their world, Beta wanders the mountains, looking for a way home. She stumbles onto the Fost—the E’mani’s ancient enemy.  Their war with the E’mani is old and rooted in magic that the Fost once had and the E’mani crave. Magic Beta soon discovers she’s developing along with strange tattoos and disturbing glimpses of her past. The Fost take her in and train her in their ways. As she spends more time with them, she falls in love with their culture and with Marin—he of the hot hands and slit eyes.
But the E’mani took her for a reason and they want her back—dead or alive. If Beta doesn’t remember that reason soon, they’re all going to die.

PG Excerpt:

Oy. No more weekday frat parties for me, no matter how noble the cause, especially when I have a test the next day. What was I thinking? And last minute cramming with a headache was not a good idea either. Forget it. My eyes drifted to the clock.
And now I was late. Damn it. With a sigh, I threw down my pencil and scrambled up, my head throbbing. I traded my Eeyore jammies for skinny jeans and a fitted white t-shirt. Shoes, where were my shoes? Gah. I ducked and rooted around in the deep, dark  spaces under my bed. Hmm, the green dress I borrowed from Sarah. Mental note: I need to return that. English book, various dust bunnies of uncertain lineage…there.
Sketchers on, I grabbed my backpack, turned up my iPod, and ran out the door. No time to primp.
Good thing the campus I lived on was small. There was a big central courtyard—the quad—filled with towering oak trees and wide-open spaces surrounded by squat school buildings and classrooms. If I hurried, I’d make it…
I raced into the quad out of breath and slowed, turning in a complete circle.
Huh.
No one around. Unease skittered through me on soft paws. The courtyard was always busy. I pulled my headphones out of my ears. Was there some sort of event I didn’t know about going on?
The unnatural silence pressed in on me for a second as the echoes of my steps faded.
Then screams—men’s and women’s—poured from Main Street. I broke into a run and shot between the buildings toward the sound.
Cars littered the intersection. Some guy rear-ended someone else, causing a chain reaction down the road. A horn blared nearby and a faint breeze blew the smell of gasoline, smoke, and copper my way. Clusters of people stood among the wreckage.

Popping in for a quick hello!

Man am I ever tired! Seems as if I spend my life trying to catch up...yesterday I noticed something that looked like two pigs fighting in a sack and realized I was seeing the back of myself! Talk about being far behind...

Seriously I dont know if/when my life will resume normalcy.

Scratch that I have an idea of when--IF it happens. As most everyone knows, I spend a majority of my life living with my grandmother being her primary care provider. She's suffered massive personality shifts, forgetfulness and some signs of demensia. (I'm so tired I don't even think I spelled that correctly!) We've had her in and out of doctor offices trying to pin down the problem.

Thursday we took her to a neurologist and for the first time since January we have an answer! She was on several combinations of medications and the doctor told us that two of the medications cancelled each other out and caused her brain to malfunction! He advised us to wean her off the one and keep her on the other. BUT while she is being weaned off the medicaitons she is still going to need care 24/7.

The good news is this is only for another 4 or 5 weeks! By the time I leave for my vacation at the end of July, she should be back to normal.

THANK GOD!

Now if I can just hang on for the next few weeks, I will be able to get back to my real life! I'm so happy she's getting better, honest and truly thankful she is improving--unfortunately she doesnt remember the doctor telling her she needs full time care so she's becoming tempermental and irritating. God give us strength!

I can't WAIT to get my life back! I'll be abole to focus entirely on my writing, my edits, submissions and etc...

I also want to thank everyone who has sent me emails offering encouraging words, and prayers on my families behalf. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Donica Covey fans ROCK! The best thing is--it's not just my readers who have poured out their support. The entire romance community--in as many as know me anyway--have all been so wonderfully suppoprtive and generous. I don't know how I'd have survived without my wonderful friends who have listened to me vent, encouraged me when I was ready to give up, scream or loose my own marbles.

You're ALL wonderful and I'm so grateful to each of you!

Now that the mushy stuff is out of the way, (hehehe) I'm excited to announce that I received edits on my next release, Hunting Mickey! This title(from Champagne Books), due to release in October, is the final installment of my Gateway Guardians series. Edits are taking me longer than usual due to the fact I can't focus on the work 100% of my day but at least they're getting done!

My most recent release, Cry Wolf (from Samhain Publishing) spent the first two weeks of its release on the Top Ten list at My Bookstore and More! Talk about boosting my days! Each day that I was finally able to pop on and check my emails I found a message alerting me to it's sales status. Beleive me there were days when I was so deeply discouraged I didnt know if I'd ever be able to smile again--then I'd find this message alert and the sun came out from behind the clouds! Thanks to EVERYONE who picked up a copy! As soon as I get my life back to normal I'm planning on a couple of contests to celebrate both Cry Wolf and Hunting Mickey. I hope you'll stick around and check in at www.donicacovey.com for information!

I've got to run. I'm home for exactly 48 hours and I have a great deal of housework and things to catch up on. I'll see y'all again soon!

Huggles and have a WONDERFUL weekend!

Research Humor

The other day I was chatting with a fellow author about the research we put into our books, and a rather funny story came to mind. As my day to blog approached, I thought I’d share this with all of you.

I’m pretty much a research fanatic. If it’s in a book of mine, no matter the genre, and it relates to history, you can almost bank it’s factual. To date, I think I’ve stretched factual truth once in a book. (That’s not to say I haven’t run free-reign with gaps in history or unverified fact.)

When I wrote Seduction’s Stakes, I’d never been to any of the places I used in the book. My experience with the east coast is one small part of Virginia and DC. So, as I looked for hotels that would suit my needs, I found the perfect one for Preakness Week – the Harbor Court Baltimore.

The web pictures were enough to give my creative side room to work with. They even had menus posted for their restaurants. But what I needed was a floor-plan to make my plot idea work. I had great fears that someone staying there would read the book and say “Hey, that’s not possible.”

So I emailed two persons, uncertain which one was the better contact, requesting some sort of floor plan or description, explained I was a romance author, and elaborated on my set up, in attempts to verify or disprove my mental picture. I specifically asked whether they had luxury suites that adjoined, or whether the corner suites were on top of each other, so they could be accessed by a back stair.

Two days passed, and both persons responded. I saw in my box a man’s name and a woman’s name, and cringed at seeing the man’s – I could picture him snickering. So I went for the lady’s response right off the bat.

I about fell out of my chair.

While she did send over a diagram, and the letter began in a very professional manner, evidently something cross-fired in her brain. The very last line of her letter was, “If your characters need any further information, they should book a stay with us.” What came after that, I don’t recall exactly, but it was a direct reference to a discrete rendezvous.

No, this woman wasn’t being facetious. She clearly believed I had fabricated some story and was making an inquiry for an affair.

To this day, I ask myself how many other people she might have indirectly insulted. Although admittedly, it’s more humorous to think how many people have claimed to be a romance writer just to conduct an affair.

On the other hand, the gentleman’s response was completely professional, more informative, and exceedingly polite. He got the thank you.

For a rather intimate view of the Harbor Court Baltimore, check out Seduction’s Stakes.

Never make a wager you can’t afford to lose...

A member of horse racing’s elite, Maddie McCleery’s got her eye on the Triple Crown and her heart set on her rival’s unraced colt. Owned by the one man she can’t conquer on the track, the same man who humiliated her in a youthful game of Truth or Dare, the colt promises sweet victory. When he refuses her purchase offer, and outruns her at the Kentucky Derby, Maddie sets out to seduce Riley into selling. In the process, she’s seduced, and agrees to a shocking bet. The odds aren’t in her favor, and she’s desperate for the win.

Riley Jennings wants Maddie almost more than the Triple Crown. In his bed, in his shower – wherever he can have her. For two years she’s eluded him and he’s refused her offer on his horse out of spite. Enraptured by her post-Derby game, he learns the lengths she’ll go to for his colt, and sees sure-fire victory. His proposed wager stacks the odds in his favor – if her horse wins the Preakness, he’ll accept her terms. If his horse comes in first, they’ll negotiate his way.

When the dust settles on the wire, will love claim final victory, or will unexpected tragedy stop them in the gates?

Yes, You're Stuck with me on the 12th

Hello! Linda Kage here. I guess I get to bore—I mean, ENTERTAIN—you all on the twelve of every month. So, I’ll just introduce myself this first post to give you some fair warning about what you can expect from me every thirty days or so.

I love to read all sorts of romance: contemporary, suspense, historical, paranormal…you get the picture, right? If it’s a romance, I’ll devour it. But so far, I’ve only written mainstream contemporary romance.

My first book, The Stillburrow Crush, was released this February from The Wild Rose Press. It’s a contemporary Young Adult story, and strangely enough, the only YA book I’ve finished to date. The other three books I have coming out are all adult romance—not erotic but definitely on the steamy side (Oh yeah!).

The Trouble with Tomboys will be released in August from The Wild Rose Press. It’ll be available in both ebook and print. Then in November Champagne Books will release my third book, Hot Commodity. Hot Commodity will also be available in ebook and eventually print. And my fourth book, Delinquent Daddy, is currently being edited by The Wild Rose Press. They’ll probably release it sometime in 2011 (just a guess).

If you’d like to read more about any of my stories, please feel free to visit my website at www.LindaKage.com. I just love visitors!

Now, if I were a smart person, like Molly Daniels/Kenzie Michaels and Marianne Stephens/April Ash, I would’ve gotten myself a split personality and had two different pen names: one for my YA story and one for my adult work…but nope, I’ve never been accused of being a genius. So, there’s just little ol' me.

But, I digress. So onto my personal life…

I live in Kansas with my husband, daughter, and our nine cuckoo clocks (though we only run one clock at a time because, honestly who wants to wind nine cuckoo clocks every morning and evening—though technically, you don’t wind a cuckoo clock; you pull a string. Sorry, I’m not up-to-date on the correct cuckoo terminology on how to re-energize a cuckoo clock!) Anyway...

This February was a HUGE month for me because not only did my first book come out, but my first baby was born too! I know, WOW, right?

Seriously can’t believe my little Lydia Marie is already two months old. Before I know it, she’ll be walking, talking, and moving off to college. My writing time has greatly decreased since she’s been alive, but stories keep swimming around in my head, so I’m sure I’ll continue to use what spare time I can find to keep up on writing…or reading. I really miss reading as much as I used to read before she came along. But it’s still worth it. She’s been a blessing, an exhausting blessing, but a blessing nonetheless.

So, that’s the basics about me. It was nice to meet you all, and I’ll see you again next Twelfth!
