After Thorn crash-lands in the widow Roxie Carson’s corn field. Roxie nurses the injured Arcon. As tension worsens between Roxie and her brother-in-law, Thorn turns out to be an unexpected ally.

First Look:
Something screamed
over the roof of the house, and an orange glow lit up the bedroom windows—a
crash sounded close by. Roxie Carson sat up in bed with her heart hammering. “What’s
that?”
Kit Carson, Roxie’s German Shepard, started to give a continuous,
rapid bark.
She glanced at the empty side of the bed with her
mouth half open to say something to her husband. Roxie bit her lip against the
sting of tears. Her sorrow caused a huge, painful knot inside her chest. I have to do things by myself now which
includes investigating the scary noises.
Roxie trudged out of her warm bedroom. She pulled on
her coat, winter gloves, and knee-high rubber boots over her pajamas.
When she stepped outside, she spotted flecks of fire
out in her north acreage. Damn, I just
plowed that field, too.
Kit Carson ran to her, wagging his tail.
She patted his side. “Hey, boy, are you ready to go
see what that was?”
He barked once, which she took as a yes. But then he
was always ready to go at a moment’s notice.
The rains had made everything a muddy mess. Especially
the land she so carefully plowed. Her life had become a bitter battle. She had planted
corn, but then the monsoon season came and drowned the tender seedlings. The
drought that had plagued the farmlands had finally ended but at a cost. One
rainstorm after another brought by several Atmospheric Rivers had kept the
fields flooded. Great, just great. I
should plant rice. That’s a crop needing a lot of water.
She hurried over to the compact utility tractor. Her
husband’s last extravagant purchase. At the thought of her husband, her heart
squeezed. The backhoe was still attached from digging drainage ditches the day
before. Not that anything she tried helped.
Turning the key, the engine hesitated. “Come on, baby.
Turn over for Momma.” The tractor finally started, belching out a cloud of
diesel smelling smoke. She flipped on the headlights.
Kit Carson ran ahead, leading the way toward whatever
it was.
Her dog soon trotted next to a furrow scraped into the
muddy earth. Roxie steered the
tractor just behind her German Shepard, studying the furrow.
What did this?
The further she drove, the deeper into the earth it extended,
going from groove to trench. What the
hell hit my field? Maybe it’s a
meteor, and I can sell it on eBay for a thousand dollars. That thought cheered
Roxie up a bit. I could pay a few overdue
bills with that amount.
The ditch abruptly ended, and became a hole filled
with something black and gray. Steam rose, filling the air. Roxie parked the
tractor next to it then climbed out.
Her boots skidded on the muddy ground, she pinwheeled
her arms and slid right into the hole. Roxie fetched up against hot metal.
“Oof.”
Fins were attached to the back end, but the nose was
buried under the mud.
So, it’s something
man made.
The big eBay sale she planned winged away.
Kit shifted from foot to foot, whining down at her.
Roxie glanced sharply up at her dog. “No-no, you stay
up there. We don’t both need to be down in this mud hole.”
The trench continued to fill up with water.
If it’s a rocket,
I’ll need to report this to someone. But if it’s a jet there could be someone
trapped inside. One way to find out.
She knocked on the side three times and got a knock
back in the same sequence.
“Dios mío!
There’s someone in there.” With adrenaline filling her system, Roxie
scrambled out of the trench. She climbed into the tractor. Not wanting the mud
to make her steering wheel slippery, she tossed her filthy gloves out the door.
Turning the tractor around, she set the stabilizers down, fitted the backhoe’s
bucket down the hole. She started moving mud, one scoop at a time, flinging it
out faster than she’d ever made the tractor move before.
Kit Carson barked encouragement.
She finally unburied the front end of the black jet.
With the rain pouring down on the muddy top, she could just make out a
man-sized shape inside.
“Don’t worry, I’ll get you out!” She lifted the stabilizers
and drove around to the back end of the jet. She reset the stabilizers then stretched
the scoop out to its fullest length. Climbing out, she looped a lasso strap
around the tail of the jet, and at the other end, she hooked onto the backhoe’s
lifting ring. That done, she climbed back inside and began to lift the scoop. The
mechanism squealed and smoked. She shut it down. “Please, don’t mess up on me.
I can’t afford to have you fixed.”
The jet hadn’t moved.
She tried again, but the mechanism squealed and smoked
again. She shut it down. “Darn wings, they’re keeping the jet in place. Too bad
there isn’t a way to take them off.”
A whirling noise caught her attention. She rose up to
get a better look. The wings withdrew inside the body of the jet.
The poor guy
inside must have seen my problem.
“That helps a lot. Gracias,”
she called out, hoping he could hear her. Must
be an experimental type with retractable wings.
She tried again.
Finally, the sleek torpedo shaped jet came out of the hole.
It had skids like landing gear. That would make it easier to bring it back
to the house.
She hoped the jet wasn’t broken. Well, it probably won’t fly again after crashing into my field. The
pilot better have good insurance to cover it.
Enough mud still covered the windows of the cockpit
that she couldn’t make out whether the pilot was a man or woman. The dark
clouds obscuring the moon didn’t help either.
“I’m taking you back to the house, so I can get you
out of there!” Roxie yelled and changed the scoop position so it would pull
without lifting the jet in the air. She drove carefully toward her driveway,
with its large concrete parking area. The jet dragged along behind her.
Kit Carson led the way, as usual.
A cloud burst overhead, and it rained harder. She
turned on the windshield wipers and heater. The bright lights of the single-story,
rambling farmhouse with tan wood siding was a welcome beacon guiding her back.
As she drove, she prayed the person inside wasn’t badly
hurt.
She performed a U-turn, dragging the jet onto the oversized
cement parking lot and turned off the tractor. After stepping out, she took the
lasso towing strap off the black jet and stared at one of the bent runners.
The jet’s door retracted up, and the pilot peered out
at her.
As their gazes met, the shock of utter astonishment
flew through her.
“Dios mío!” He’s not human.

Getting It Together
I love books! I’d rather buy books than shoes. Yet, I have a horrible confession to make. My bookcase is a disorganized mess. There are my research books for my writing then there are my pleasure books. Each book is haphazardly shoved on a shelf with no order or reason. I cringe every time I glance at my four bookcases, which are crammed two rows deep on each shelf.
That mess needs to be tackled.
And I’ve been trying to decide how to organize the books. Do I arrange it by color? Subject? Or just size (smallest to largest)?
So many options are available to me and each one a is viable choice.
My first option is color. This one works for two reasons. Reason A is because I may not always remember the title of a book but my mind does retain the color of it. A couple of months ago, I had to find a piece of information and knew I could find it in the pages of a green book. And when I scanned the shelves, I found the book, which was entitled The Georgian Gentleman.
Reason B is that a color-arranged bookcase will look pretty and pretty is always nice.
The second organizational option is by subject. My fiction books could be gathered together and wouldn’t be mixed up with my research and other such books. Yet, when it comes to my nonfiction books (research books mainly) that causes the greatest problem. So would a head subject be Scotland then its history, geography, and costume. And what about subjects that overlap? Like Scotland in the Regency Era. I can feel my head throbbing already.
The final option is to arrange the books by size. Just go from smallest to largest. I could put the smallest at the top and the largest, which are usually the heaviest, on the bottom. Maybe.
Are your shelves organized or do you just shove books where they fit?

Reading Romance: Expectations vs Reality
Once upon a time, romance readers were shamed for reading the genre. Readers concealed the covers and most importantly, hid their love for the most popular-selling genre. The books were called bodice rippers (for the rape trope that populated many novels) or trashy books. New York Times refused to review the books. Such treatment is changing. New readers are finding their way to the romance section of the bookstore. Yet, the exceptions and reality must still be confronted.
A romance novel expectation is that the books are nothing but smut. The genre features many sensual levels. There is clean romance or sweet romance where the bedroom door is firmly shut and locked to the spiciest of reads. Yet whatever the sexual level, this genre is about romance, love, and overcoming conflicts for the characters to obtain their happily ever after.
Another expectation of the romance genre is that it is nothing more than three hundred-plus pages of mindless fluff since it deals with love and relationships. But that notion has no basis in reality. The romance genre, whatever the sub-genre, deals with all the modern issues we struggle against. Books now feature heroes and heroines living with mental health or medical issues such as being neurodivergent, being on the spectrum, or having a chronic illness. The world-building of romances are no longer all white but feature and highlight the true variety of the human species and our cultures. And the external conflict deals with sexism, racism, and all the isms that blight the world.
Romance novels continue to evolve and develop just like the real world and reflect our world in its pages. Please share the title and author of your favorite romance and the reason for it.

The Regency Era: A Love Affair
When it comes to romance novels the Regency era is a fan-favorite sub-genre. This short period spans from 1811-1820 during what historians call the Long Eighteenth Century. This epoch is characterized by many notable events that change every part of the world.
Britain is at war with Napoleon and America. Slave ships sailed from the African coast to the Americas with human cargo. People in the Western world believed themselves enlightened, embracing Ancient Greek ideals which were reflected in various areas of society including fashion. This was the era of Jane Austen, Lord Byron, and Mary Shelley. It was also a time when the divide between the haves and have-nots that is not unlike our own time.
So, why is the Regency era so popular with romance readers?
One reason is that the time was one of decadence, and joviality before the moral Victorian age unfurled. It was a wild time. A time period that we could see ourselves, the reader, being able to navigate yet the sub-genre still allows us to escape.
Another reason for it popularity is that it was a time of opposing traits. The “world” (by world I mean Europe) is at war yet people are twisting every drop of joy from life. People are enlightened yet still harbor elitist, racist, sexist, and religious ideologies. Though those beliefs haven’t been eradicated from this world, most of them are not believed by a majority of people.
Much like other books, the Regency sub-genre can entertain while opening our minds to the modern problems we face.
Now if we could all get our own Happily Ever After in real life, all would be perfect.

Cover Reveal for Alien Fury by Janice Seagraves
Cover reveal
The eighth book in the Chronicles of Arcon
A book dedicated to Jerry Race.
I used Jerry Race’s name as a place holder name for the sheriff in Alien Fury. Before I could ask if I should leave him in my book, Jerry, unfortunately passed away, and leaving many of us in the writing community who knew him heartbroken.
I left Jerry’s name in as the Sherriff. I gave him a partner with the same name as his hero in his first published book, More Than a Stud, Shane. He always called me kiddo, so I have him calling the heroine that as well. I used to tease him about using “Oh my word,” instead of swearing in his stories, so there’s a little cookie for you to find.
Rest in peace Jerry. I miss you.

Unedited Excerpt:
A knock rattled the door. Lights colored her curtains red then blue. She opened one side of the French doors, seeing a familiar face. “Hello, Jerry.”
Sheriff Jerry Race smiled at her, still petting Kit Carson. He looked past her into the house before turning his gaze back to her. “Hi, kiddo. You reported a downed jet?”
“Yup, I sure did.” She opened the
door wider, inviting him in.
He stepped inside, closing the door behind him. As he studied her expression, his brow furrowed. “You’re not having a bit of fun with me, are you?”
“Nope.”
“Okay.”
“I have a visitor.” She smirked, with
a hand resting on a kitchen chair.
“Oh really?” He smoothed his gray
hair and resettled his hat. “Let me guess, Air Force or Marines.”
“Neither.” She shook her head,
grinning wider.
“Is it someone from the Special
Forces, and they’ll have to kill me now that I’ve found them out?”
“No.” Roxie giggled. “Actually, I
have an alien sleeping on my couch.”
“Huh?” His blue eyes widened, and he
rocked back on his heels. He rubbed his chin and chuckled. “Once upon a time I
would have had you drug tested after saying such a thing, but we know better
now, don’t we?”
“Oh yes.” She turned up her smile a
notch. “I have a foster brother who swore he had been kidnapped and probed by
aliens. He’s suing the Arcons for damages.”
“Really? You’ll have to tell me how
that turns out.” He glanced back toward the window. “So that jet belongs to the
Arcon on your couch?”
“More like spacecraft.”
He hung a thumb toward the door.
“That itty bitty thing was in space?”
“Maybe it’s thrifty on fuel.” She jerked
her shoulders. “All I know is it crashed into my soggy field, and I had a heck
of a time digging it out. Want to see him?”
“Yeah, I better.” Jerry followed her
into the living room. He stood over the Arcon a long moment. “He’s asleep.”
“Don’t wake him. He’s hurt and needs
rest,” she whispered.
He jerked his gaze to hers. “How
bad?”
“I’m not sure, but he was favoring
his right side. Maybe ribs and a concussion. The ship hit the ground hard
enough to dig a trench. I already called an ambulance.”
“A concussion can be serious. How are
his ribs, broken or bruised?”
She shook her head. “Not sure. His
ribs must not be too bad since he did climb out of that spacecraft by himself although
he did have a few bad moments.”
“Okay, I’ll need to make some phone calls. Let his people know he’s here.” He took out a cell phone and took a couple of pictures of the sleeping alien.
Coming soon.

Respect The Romance
When I scroll through news apps or the internet, it seems the romance genre is receiving more attention from the media. But the attention isn’t the same type received just a few years ago. Bodice rippers that received sneers and snide comments are now talked about with respect the work deserves. And the fans don’t hide their books anymore but now proclaim themselves fans including the UK Prime Minister. It’s even a rumor Queen Camilla is a fan.
So, why the change? It may be because of money. That does always talk but it surely isn’t the only reason. I believe it’s because of the changes in society. The saying goes, “Behind every great man is a great woman.” These days, when you look beyond the man’s shoulder you won’t see the woman there, she’s beside him or even a step ahead, or perhaps, she’s all on her own. Women are now running corporations and their—our stories are being explored. Our entertainments that might have received a pat on the head from the boys or a isn’t that nice, dear now earn big bucks.
Women’s lives haven’t been the only change in society. The LGBTQIA community has also stepped into the light and fought for their place. Their stories are being told. No longer the angsty gay man hiding behind a fake marriage or a lesbian couple who are the focus of the male gaze. On the shelves, there are love stories featuring the LGBTQIA community such as Red, White, and Royal Blue and Written in the Stars (Just to name two of the most popular novels).
So, what does this mean? It means that those businesses producing outlets for our entertainment are paying attention. We are finding more stories to help us escape, relax and just have fun. And that means us romance readers will find more stories and more books to add to our favorite bookshelves.

What Remains
This week, bestselling romance author Julie Garwood passed away. While her family has the memories and love, we —her fans— have her books. And I love her books, especially her historical romance novels.
Her books have a few spots on my keeper shelf with broken spines, crinkled covers, and yellowing pages. From The Bride to Ransom, I read her books over and over, always laughing out loud and turning each page enjoying each word. And when I read the last word and close the book, I feel happy, with a smile on my face, having had a great, entertaining time even though I know the stories inside and out.
As an author, those feelings are all we can leave our readers. We yearn for nothing more than to entertain, and help you escape. We’re no different than rock stars or movie stars, but we authors are most likely introverts.
Farewell, Julie Garwood. Thank you for sharing your talent and stories.
To all the other authors out there tapping away with their works, I say thank you. Please keep turning them out.

Be a Stubborn Writer by Janice Seagraves
I once read that "writers need to be stubborn."
[sic]
I quite agree with that statement.
Be stubborn at keeping to your writing schedule.
Be stubborn at working on your story and not get distracted
by the "shinny" new story that will take you away from your story
goals.
Be stubborn and fix your sight on your goal.
As a child, I learned a hard lesson in arts and crafts
classes, I made a friend who didn't want to do the work and told me, "You
can't do that." or "let's just walk around and not do anything."
If I listened to her, I didn't finish my project, so to do
the crafts that I loved I had to ignore her and I lost a friend that
summer.
Funny but it was a good lesson learned. I found that to be
true to myself I had to close my ears to negativity and be stubborn.
Once I started writing with an eye toward publication,
someone told me, "You'll never be published."
My response, "Watch me!"
A few years later, I had the privilege of telling him,
"I'm a published author now."
I'm currently being stubborn about revising what will be the
eighth book in my Chronicles of Arcon. I should be going through the editing
process sometime in June. I may be publishing Alien Fury sometime in September
2023.
Be a stubborn writer. :)
Here's the seventh book in the Chronicles of Arcon.
Heather Wood hasn’t had the best luck with her love life,
or just life in general. After getting pregnant by her unfaithful lover, she’s
kidnapped by aliens to be actioned off as a slave, and then the spaceship
crashes on a deserted planet.
Things start to look up when two handsome aliens, Sky and Lance, rush to her
rescue. She finds herself deeply attracted to both males, but you can only take
one, right?
Excerpt:
A deep voice yelled something, but it took a moment for her
implanted electronic language translator chip to interpret the language. “Is
anyone in here?”
Who is that? Heather tensed and sat up. A
man’s voice, but there were no males on the ship. Even the little grays were
sexless. Any potential response froze in her throat. She held her
breath and listened. Footsteps clumped past the outer doorway, heading further
along the corridor. He’s leaving.
Was she more afraid of being discovered or being left alone
on a wrecked ship? A shiver of panic gave her movements speed as she scrambled
to her feet. The hell with it. I’m pregnant, and I need help.
“Hey,” she croaked and cleared her throat. “Over here.”
Placing her hands on the opening to her cell, she pushed hard. When the door
moved, she flinched back. It’s unlocked? She stepped out.
“Hello?”
The scrape of a boot sounded as the person turned and
headed her way. “I’m almost there.”
The lights dimmed and the shadow of a tall, thin,
hunched-back shape limped toward her. Hooded and cloaked, its eyes glowed
eerily in the near dark.
As warning spasms of alarm erupted through her, Heather
stumbled backwards, her heart pounding. “Who... who are you?”
“My apologies if I frightened you,” the man said in a soft
voice and gazed at her for a long moment. “My name is Sky Starfinder. I’m sorry
if I’m staring, but I haven’t seen anyone in such a long time. Years in fact.”
The lights flickered back on. He shoved off his hood and
squared his shoulders. The man had shaggy green hair and a snowy complexion. He
blinked pink eyes with vertical pupils at her. His face appealed to her despite
its rawboned and beardless appearance. Leather pants sheathed his legs, and a
long hooded unbuttoned jacket left his muscular chest bare. She’d mistaken his
chocolate brown backpack for a hunchback.
“Years?”
