The Path To Success Sometimes Requires A Look At Where You Began: Guest Blog by @ReneeVincent

After hitting USA Today last month with some of my fellow InkHeart Authors, I started to reminisce about when my career started, what paths I took along the way, and how I ultimately succeeded in obtaining one of my life-long dreams. Upon looking back, I sifted through countless author interviews I'd done from my past and came across one I'd done soon after I signed my first contract for my Emerald Isle Trilogy.

As I read through the interview that was well over five years old, I came to realize that what I'd said then is still true today. Sure, many things have changed in the way I write and promote myself because let's face it, the publishing industry often changes with the wind. In order to make it in this fast-paced world, you must stay up to date on fluctuating trends and markets. But there's something to be said about consistency.

I feel consistency plays a major role in success. For me, that means putting out quality books in a timely manner and staying true to my voice. That also means remembering the things that are important; the things you know to be true in your heart—because those are what will carry you through the rough patches.

Knowing what I know now, I read the answers to one of my first interviews and it brought me a sense of comfort. Though I'd sometimes walked blindly, I must have been on the right track as I attempted to pursue a career in the romance genre.

For a little trip back in time, I thought I'd share a few questions from the interview that I can honestly say I'd answer the same way today. I hope you enjoy!

* * * * *

You’ve just sold your first book. How exciting! We’d love to know the details.
Yes, I am still on cloud nine! Signing a 3-book deal with Turquoise Morning Press has been an amazing turn of events in my life, and I must admit I’m actually waiting to suddenly wake up from this incredible dream.

I signed this contract in front of everyone who attended the Career Writer’s Network Workshop in French Lick, Indiana at the West Baden hotel, and being there made my very first signing even more special. It is a day I will never forget.

Let’s talk about your writing process. Are you a plotter or a pantzer?
As a whole, a pantzer. I cannot outline a story (believe me, I’ve tried) because it would change from week to week, and I’d spend more time rewriting the outline than the manuscript itself.

But before I write on a chapter, I plot it out in my head first over a cup of coffee. I often go outside to my lake (weather permitting), and go over dialogue, sequence, and character building. Don’t ask me why…I just find that it works for me. Once I have that down, I spend the rest of the day writing it—although, sometimes the direction I plotted that morning has been know to change on the fly. But I don’t mind. I’m a very flexible person. And if it helps the story, I welcome it.

What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Dream big. But keep your goals attainable. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with each attainable goal accomplished, it’s a step closer to the distant dream far out of reach. Eventually, you will arrive there. And when you do, you can look back at all the hard work and feel an incredible sense of pride that you didn’t give up.

Now, here is the totally off-writing subject question. What’s the coolest, wackiest, most risk-taking thing you’ve ever done?
Let me set the stage…

I was horseback riding on a couple’s ride in Tennessee and we came to a place on the trail where we had to climb up about 3-foot high rock steps. Now to make this the most risk-taking thing I’ve ever done, the trail (if you could call it that) was only about 4-foot wide—with a high rock cliff to the left of us, and a sheer drop-off to the right. No room for mistakes.

At this point, it was either turn around or trust your horse to climb it. I chose, among many others to let my horse try. Some had gotten off their horses and led them up on foot. I, however, trusted my horse completely and gave him full-reign.

It was a bit nerve racking, but I never doubted my horse’s abilities or his common sense. I made it all the way to the top. It was such a rush! I am ready to go back and do it again, and knowing my horse’s disposition, I would venture to say Lucky is ready as well!

Guest Blog: Stephanie Burkhart talks about Edgar Cayce the American Psychic

Edgar Cayce has fifty-six years to live, but right now he doesn't know what to make of the Angel in front of him and the promises she's making. He's young, only 12, and while his family says he's a spiritual child, he finds it hard to focus on school and his lessons. He squirms on the ground, sitting in the oak grove near his farmhouse. It's 1889 and the adults in his life are firm, grim-faced, and hard working. They are strict disciplinarians and he's had his fair share of physical discipline.

Edgar closes the Bible in his lap. He knows she's an angel. Her wings are white and wide, fluttering gently in the breeze. Her hair is gold, shining in the sun.

"What do you want most of all, Edgar?" Her voice is soft, like sweet notes on a musical scale.

Edgar feels the sweat beading on the back of his neck. His palms perspire. She's breathtakingly beautiful. He's nothing - just a poor boy with poor grades, destined to work hard on the farm like his father.

"You are the instrument we've chosen to touch this world."

Edgar swallows, anxious, nervous. He knows he must choose the path his life is going to take for the rest of his days, so he must choose wisely. He glances at his Bible.

"I want to be helpful to others. I want to heal people."

A smile graces her face, sending radiant beams over him. "Close your eyes and rest, Edgar. It is when you sleep that we can help you."

Edgar nods his head and leans back against the solid oak tree, his Bible clutched firmly in his hands. He yawns and peace settles over his soul. The Angel's warmth spreads over his skin. He will never be alone again.

****

Edgar Cayce was an American who talked about healing, prophecies, Atlantis, World War II, and even reincarnation. He could see auras, spoke to angels and heard voices of people who had died. When he would do a reading for a person, he would lay down and go into a trance, as if he were asleep. He would give up to 8 readings a day which often  left him emotionally and physically drained.

Cayce's clients included many contemporaries including Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Edison, and George Gershwin. (It's said Ronald and Nancy Reagan used an astrologer, which I find a tad interesting given Woodrow Wilson saw Cayce 70 yrs before the Reagans sought "new age" help) Edgar is controversial yet, prophetic. He is doubted by critics and held to high esteem by his believers. Men like Cayce inspire us to search out the paranormal and dare us to believe.

WOLF'S TORMENT

It's 1865 and Moldavia is a country nestled against the shores of the Black Sea. Lady Theresa travels from Austria to this country that's haunted by tales of vampires and werewolves. She's going to marry the Crown Prince, but she harbors her own unspoken secrets.

His best friend, Viktor, accompanies Mihai and marries Mihai's sister. In an unfortunate twist of fate, a werewolf bites Viktor.

Viktor's transformation threatens everyone around him, including his wife's safety and Mihai's happiness, but he's especially dangerous when he's near Theresa. Can Mihai save his family from Viktor's lies and deceptions?

WRITING SERIES AND KEEPING IT FRESH AND SNAPPY

Writing my books in series is something that has come quite naturally. When I create a world, whether it be a brotherhood of hunky Navy SEALs in my fictional SEAL Team 3, or my Golden Vampires of Tuscany series, or Guardian Angels, that world gets enhanced as I bring in new characters and plots in subsequent books. The trick is to make a stand-alone book, and at the same time rewarding returning loyal readers.

With the thousands of new books coming on the market in any given day, I find having a series gives people a reason to go to my website or Amazon page. They might remember something they'd read a year ago, may not be on social media that much and just wonder, by searching the series title, if there are new books out.

Some people say that long strings of series are not a good thing, that reviewers will not review a Book 8, for instance, because they don't want to have to read the first seven. Well, that may be the case for professional book bloggers who have a limited amount of time to review and post their findings. If you have to read seven books to get sufficient background for Book eight, and, especially if all those books must also be read in order, I think that book or series, unless highly recommended, might be skipped.

Early on with my SEAL Brotherhood books, the first four in the Series were better off read in order. After book 5, Cruisin' For A SEAL, I paid more and more attention to a book being stand-alone, and today, that's all I write. I like calling little subseries like Band of Bachelors, or True Navy Blue instead of saying Books 11, #12 or #13. The latter books can be read in any order.

I also weave in characters from previous books. When I have holes in the series, I can write a novella. I can bundle them, add bonus material, change backmatter and do all manner of other things to my books. The hero and heroine in one book is a strong secondary couple in the next one, and so on. This way I achieve a high degree of variety, but the overall story arc is intact.  It seems so wrong to destroy or ignore a world I've taken such time to begin.

And I'm just about to add another series: Nashville SEALs. Some of my characters
from Band of Bachelors: Lucas, spend half their time on a mission in Nashville, so it's only natural they stop by and watch a young up-and-coming star perform in front of a packed house of ladies. Little did any of them know that fateful night would change all of their lives forever.

Using the same narrator for all the audio books is very smart because, if he's good, he'll draw the readers in who might not have found my print books ever. Having someone, especially someone you can count on to sound the same book after book after book, holds the story together. Your narrator becomes a character in your books, so this thread of consistency will also help strengthen your readership.

Today, we're celebrating Book 1 in my new series, Band of Bachelors: Lucas. Here's the brand new You Tube video trailer, just out today:

Fun stuff from Desire's Dilemma

The boxed set is out at Amazon, now only 99 cents! How can you possibly beat that bargain? Being part of an anthology is an experience. Lots of stuff I had not expected. I learned so much and am anxious to do it again.

My contribution, Desire's Dilemma has turned out to be one of my favorite stories. Do splurge the 99 cents and get this and eight other wonderful books.  Such a deal!!!!

Desire's Dilemma has become dear to me because of my hero, Marcus Montieth. Love that man. He's been wounded badly when captured as one of Wellington's spies, and is convinced he can never marry his long-time love, Lady Valanna.  She keeps trying to break his reserve and only an unexpected ending helps her.  Here's a mock interview I did just for fun.

Interview of Marcus: Desire’s Dilemma

Q1: (interviewer)
Don’t you think you treated Lady Valanna rather shabbily? And for such a long time, too.
A1: (Lord Marcus)
I have to agree. But I could do nothing else.

Q2: Is that the answer of a gentleman? Especially one responsible for the welfare of a young lady like Valanna. You were her guardian, were you not?
A2: It’s all the answer I can give you. I regret being unable to say more.

Q3. You’re not really helping, are you, my lord? You have told us exactly nothing.
A3. (Marcus looks at interviewer haughtily.)  Then perhaps you should change the line of questioning. I am not likely to tell you secrets behind Valanna’s back. She too, would like to know the answers to these rather impertinent questions.

Accompanied by a sigh from the interviewer.
Q4. Was it another woman, perhaps, that dictated your cold treatment of her?
A4. By god, if you were not someone I had agreed to talk to, I’d shove your dastardly words down your stupid throat. There has never been another woman for me. Ever. Perhaps we should cease this interview as of now.

Q5. My lord, I do beg your pardon. I am trying to get at the truth here, and your answers are puzzling, to say the least. Shall I try again? Does Lady Valanna know the secrets you are so carefully guarding?
A5. We will leave Lady Valanna out of this interview or it is over.

Pause and another sigh.
Q6. You were on Wellington’s staff? Can you tell us about your war experiences and how they affected your romantic life?
A6. Your impertinence knows no bounds. Another question like that and we will meet outside to teach you some manners. You might find me not so crippled as you seem to think.

Q7. Can you tell us anything, anything at all about your war experiences? It is well known you we a trusted confidante of Wellington. At least you were until you dropped out of sight.

Long pause, and finally Lord Monteith speaks in a deadly quiet voice.
Q7. This interview is over. Good day to you, sir.

Lord Monteith stalks from the room.

I have two new books coming out at MuseItUp. Guilty Secrets is a long historical, and I think the best book I've written. It's in the final editing. Quest for Love is in the first editing stage. And my grandson is bring married today, and that's wonderful.

You can find me at all the usual places, including Amazon and my own website, www.jeanhartstewart.com.  I'd love to hear from you.

Real Love Can Heal A Broken Heart by Marianne Stephens

Heartache. Rejection. Broken promises in a love relationship that you thought was "real". Many of us have gone through the sadness of saying goodbye to a relationship we thought would last!

I fell madly in love with "Joe" when I lived in VA. The "head over heels" type of love. Everything was going fine...until I found out he was engaged to a woman "back home" in Iowa. Feeling betrayed and crushed, I had two options: continue seeing him and hope he'd break his engagement, or move on.

I moved on. I realized that if he was cheating on his fiancee with me, what would stop him from doing the same thing to me? Sigh.

This proved to be the best decision I have made in my life. My roommate dragged me to a dance at an nearby army post, and I met my husband! Although wary of what I was being told, once he took me to meet his parents, I knew he was honest and trustworthy.

My "real" love and I have been married almost 45 years...and no more broken heart for me!

In my story, Operation Man Hunt...in the Romance Books '4' Us published anthology, ENTICE ME - LUSCIOUS LOVE STORIES, my heroine is nudged back into the dating world after suffering through a broken heart. The hero entices her into her world as she entices him into hers. Once they settle some differences and share a common goal of honesty in their relationship, love blossoms for that "happily-ever-after".

Let's Just Be Friends...NOT What You Want to Hear From Someone You Love!

"Let's just be friends."

Good Lord. Those four words can send you into a tailspin, crushing your world and causing you to crash land while your heart breaks. It signifies the other person doesn't feel the same "need, want, desire" for you as you do for him or her.

Relationships are so stressing, especially if one person is more committed to it than the other. If one seeks "more" than the other is willing to give, the "just friends" words will end whatever hope for a future the dreamer has.

Sometimes romance books have the hero and heroine begin as friends...and sometimes they're not exactly enemies but end up on opposite sides of arguments. The ones that are friends, seem to fight the attraction pulling them closer together, as if they need to avoid that giant step to a more committed relationship.

Friends can lead to a more promising relationship...romance and love...if the chemistry is mutually attractive. Authors strive for this HEA, and romance readers love these stories!

ENTICE ME: LUSCIOUS LOVE STORIES

Riviera Rendezvous  #RB4U  #AuthorRT

We are in the mystical month of October, when the veil between the worlds gets thin and ghosts and otherworldly beings run wild between now and the 31st

How well-honed is your intuition, and when it strikes, do you listen?

If you could put yourself in the shoes of Amalie Pallas, the heroine in Riviera Rendezvous, what would you do in her opening dilemma?

Imagine a young woman caught between the devil himself and a charismatic stranger.  She is an ocean away from home, has almost no money, and must get off the cruise ship before it sails in a few hours.

Her logical mind says she should go to her embassy or consulate if she has no friends in the area, but intuition nudges her heart and tells her that this may be her only chance to spend a few days with the man she’s been magnetically drawn to from a distance for the past few months.

What harm could it cause if she takes off with him in his sports car to the west, skirting along the French Riviera to a romantic family wedding?

He offers her money—proposes a business deal. He needs her as much as she needs the money. Will that allow him to think he can treat her as his employee, or that he has bought his way into her bed?

Staying on the cruise ship is not an option. Her intuition says go for the adventure, so she plunges into living-in-the-moment, in trust that destiny has presented her with this opportunity.

Riviera Rendezvous was so much fun to write! I hope you enjoy reading it—and the other entertaining stories in the Entice Me: Luscious Love Stories anthology—as much as I enjoyed writing it.

What would you do if you were Amalie? Play it safe or take an intuitive leap of faith if all the vibes felt right, and hop into that sleek sports car with Xandros?

Guest Blog: Kimberly Dean talks about her latest series, The Dream Weavers #RB4U #PNR

Absolutely… Greek to me!

The idea for my latest series, the Dream Weavers, was sparked by an old episode of Charmed.  I was in the mood to write something paranormal, but I was tired of vampires and werewolves.  Watching that episode, though, I was inspired to write something new.  I started doing research into sleep and dreaming and discovered a Greek legend about the Oneiroi, Greek daemons (spirit gods) of dreams.  I suddenly had my heroes.
The Oneiroi were the sons of Nyx (night) who lived on the beach near the mouth of Hades.  They were black-winged daemons who could take the form of men.  Each night, they would travel up to the world of sleeping humans and bestow dreams.  If they flew through a gate of horn, the dreams would true, but if they came through the gate of ivory, the dreams would be false.
I took some liberties with the legend.  My Oneiroi have assimilated into the waking world as men by day, yet they care for sleepers at night.  The premise opened up so many storylines involving sleep disorders and dreaming!
My first book, Dream Man, explores the importance of dreaming for people – both physically and psychologically – as Cael Oneiros falls in love with a beautiful sleeper he’s been tasked with protecting.  Book 2, Dream Walker, is about Derek Oneiros battling a Somnambulist who’s making his lover sleepwalk.  Dream Walker releases tomorrow, and I’m excited to hear what people think about it.
In writing, we’re told that there are no new ideas.  It turns out that mine dated all the way back to the ancient Greeks!  So are you a fan of Greek mythology?  What is your favorite legend or god?

Dream Walker Blurb
Research scientist Shea Caldwell has always had a thing for security consultant, Derek Oneiros.  He’s smart, handsome, and built like a Greek god.  As attracted as she is to him, though, she’s afraid to let him into her bed – because she’s dangerous when she sleeps.
Derek is known among his brothers as “The Machine,” yet his carefully cultivated control is put to the test whenever he’s around Shea.  The woman is as beautiful as she is intelligent, but they’ve always kept things professional – until Derek learns why.  Shea is sleepwalking again, but what she doesn’t know is that he may be the only one who can help her.  For he is a Greek daemon, and he’s charged with protecting her dreams.
With Shea threatened, Derek makes things personal, and their nights together turn steamy and intimate.  He’s ready to battle against the Somnambulist that’s been controlling his lover in her sleep, yet is the night creature really causing all the harm? When Shea’s groundbreaking research notes are stolen, it’s clear that other evil forces may be at work.

Dream Walker excerpt
He’d let her fall asleep.
It was the first clear thought that ran through Shea’s mind when she opened her eyes. That and the fact that Derek was still with her. His heat pressed against her back, and his arm draped heavily across her waist. They were lying side by side on her bed, her body tucked up close against his.
Yet even as she responded in pleasure, she tensed.
Darkness was falling. They’d spent the day making love, and now the sun was setting. Night was creeping in. She stared at the oil painting that hung on the wall until her nerves began to crawl. Even the littlest thing could set her Somnambulist off—and today had been anything but normal—yet she’d let herself be lulled into sleep.
What had she been thinking?
“There you are,” a deep voice rumbled. The hand against her stomach flexed, and she was pulled more tightly against the big male form behind her.
A muscled thigh slipped between her legs, and Shea arched as a soft kiss was placed on the side of her neck. The intimate embrace had her groaning. Obviously, she hadn’t been thinking. Her brain had been shorted out, disconnected, and thrown right into the bathwater.
How could she have let her guard down like that? The freedom had been fantastic, arousing and intoxicating as fine wine, but how could she have forgotten what had been happening to her? What had happened just this morning?
Had she… Oh, God. Had she done anything in her sleep? With Derek here?
“How long have I been out?” she asked in a rush.
“Not long.”
That rumbling voice was too disconcerting, too sexy. She had to look into his eyes. Tucking the sheet up high under her arms, she rolled over to face him. When she did, her breath caught in her chest. His short hair was mussed, and dark shadows lined his jaw. The bad boy look didn’t fit his character, but it was so incredibly hot she had to press her legs together.
Unable to help herself, she let her gaze drop. She took in the well-drawn lines of his body, his muscled chest and rippling abs, but the sheet sitting low on his hips wasn’t what made her look up again. It was the relaxed look on his face. She’d never seen him so calm, so relaxed, so at ease in the moment. It made her belly warm.
Relaxed had to be good, right? If she’d gotten up and danced zombie pirouettes around the bedroom, he wouldn’t be relaxed.
Or so obviously ready to make love to her again.
