What's On Your Wish List?

If I believed the advertisements on television this Christmas, a pricey new car and a couple of diamonds should be at the top of my wish list. Believe it or not, these are not the kind of presents that make my dress fly up.

If you want to see me smile, walk into a bookstore and locate the romance section. Then mosey over to the science and history section and find something on World War I or the depression. I know, weird but that’s what I’m interested in these days and the people most likely to buy me presents know this.

Books have always been my treasures. I still have my grandmother’s copy of Little Women and the first romance that I ever bought; a now dog-eared copy of The Wolf and the Dove. I really am going to have to replace that one. It’s always Christmas whenever I receive a book but this month I’m excited because I actually get to send someone a book in a fun-filled, gift bag of goodies that are being supplied by some of my fellow authors at RB4U.

I’m giving away an ebook of Head Over Heels, Book One in the multi-author Red Stiletto series from Ellora’s Cave and here’s a little excerpt…

Blurb:

Bella Jacienski literally falls into sexy philanthropist Rhys Vincent’s arms while wearing her “magic” red stilettos, and wonders if the legend attached to the shoes is true. Has she found her heart’s desire—a passionate, lust-crazed lover who wants only her? Always and forever?

Rhys can’t keep his big hands off the curvy shopkeeper. Her smile captivates him and her lush body has him behaving like a he-man Neanderthal. Heated glances and sizzling touches turn into a hot office interlude and wild, break-the-bed sex that only makes him want her more. Bella is all the magic he needs.

Excerpt:

Rhys Vincent ground his back teeth and took Veronica Smith–Hathaway’s elbow as they crossed the street. It was snowing and not for the first time did he wish he were wearing boots instead of dress shoes with his tux. Ronnie didn’t seem to notice the puddle that soaked her designer heels or the frigid wind that tore at the edges of her flimsy black evening coat. Neither had been designed for January in Kansas City.
Veronica—Ronnie—was his best friend Brian’s estranged wife. She had insisted she knew a shop that had the fedora they needed to complete the scavenger-hunt list—right after he’d politely refused her offer to give him the best sex of his life. Was it too much to ask for a woman who didn’t have an agenda to want to have sex with him? He’d been down the revenge-sex path years ago and it was one he didn’t want to take with a woman he’d known for twenty years.
He’d promised Brian that he’d keep an eye on her and that meant he couldn’t very well let her walk around alone in the Crossroads art district after dark.
As CEO of the Vincent Foundation, he’d put Veronica in charge of the annual event as a favor. One he was coming to regret. He was still trying to figure out why Brian was so worried about a wife he’d clearly been neglecting for the past year when Ronnie leaned over and peered into a dimly lit shop.
“There it is,” she hissed, pointing at a weathered brown fedora, jauntily perched on a torso mannequin’s head. Before he could figure out why she was hissing, he glanced through the window, started to shout and everything went into slow motion.
He saw a pair of curvy legs that ended in sexy red spike heels leaning forward and overbalancing a rickety ladder. The bell over the door jangled as he pushed it open and sprinted three full strides. He reached her before she finished screaming.
“Her” was an armful of black and white fluff he grabbed and swept out of the way as the ladder fell.
Maybe he couldn’t breathe because she’d smacked him square in the chest but he didn’t think so. Although it could have been because her arms were wrapped solidly around his neck, as if she didn’t intend to let go anytime soon. Fine by him.
He didn’t know if she was shocked that he’d caught her or because she knew the shudder that rippled through her like a faint orgasm had telegraphed its way into his fingertips. She looked like a naughty fairy-tale princess with big blue eyes. A fall of silky dark hair brushed the top of her black turtleneck and her creamy cheeks were flushed as bright as an apple. She knew.
She blinked while he was trying to catch his breath and still his body’s clamoring need to explore all the soft, warm flesh under her skirt. He was trying very hard not be too obvious that he was instantly aroused by the fact that his right hand was wrapped around her naked thigh. And then he thought, What the hell, and slid his thumb beneath the top of her stocking where it hooked into her garter.
She put her very plump red lips together…and blew. Nothing came out and she looked as surprised as he felt. The chuckle built in his chest, the low rumble originating from someplace distinctly lower.
“Excuse me,” Veronica ground waspishly from behind him before coming into his line of vision. “Are you whistling at him?”
His surprise package turned her head slowly, her eyes widening as if just realizing that someone else was in the tiny, dimly lit shop. A smile quirked the corner of her lips and she shrugged.
“No, I was trying to whistle for him.” She turned her attention back to him and smiled warmly. “I do apologize for that,” she said, with a wistful sigh that caught him hard in the solar plexus. “You startled me.”
He did laugh then because it seemed rude not to acknowledge a heartfelt apology while he was still holding on to her satiny-smooth, very naked thigh, which was covered by yards and yards of hideous checked material he wished would just fall away. He lowered her to her feet while Ronnie seethed.
“I’m Bella—owner, operator, sometimes janitor,” she said, holding up a light bulb, “of Bella’s Treasures. Is there something I can do for you?” she asked as if she hadn’t noticed how much he’d been enjoying her naked skin. There was no mistaking the twinkle in her very blue eyes. She’d noticed.

Timing is Everything

I love deep winter with its dark crisp mornings and icy star-filled nights. To some, winter means heading south to warmer climes. But that’s not for me, I’m a Midwest girl. I live in anticipation of snowfall armed with the trifecta of protection against the storm – that requisite milk, bread, and eggs.

When I was a girl, winter meant snowball fights, tobogganing, and school closed for snow days. As a teen it meant snowmobiling and skiing. Nowadays winter means slipping into the baggy comfortable clothes and thick floppy socks you wouldn’t be caught dead wearing outside the house. Winter means pots of soup simmering on the stove. It's a time for assembling jigsaw puzzles on the kitchen table with my husband and anyone who stops for a visit.

Snowfall at night always summons that perfect sleep. Come morning, I'm often filled with an aching wonder at how anything could be as lovely as two-hundred year old bur oaks surrounded by an undisturbed blanketing of snow. There are as many shades of blue to snow as there are shades of green in the spring. The artist in me can’t wait.

I just love the shorter days and longer nights of winter. I'm an early riser whose circadian rhythm is fine-tuned from years of living in the country. Since the clocks turned back an hour, I feel like I've actually gained more time in my day. What writer doesn't like that? My bedroom window faces east so my days begin when the first sliver of daylight wakes me. I write on my laptop at the kitchen table where a large window treats me to a half day of ascending sunlight at my back. The living room bay window and backdoor window give me the rest as afternoon inches toward evening. My dogs follow these warm winter sunbeams on the floor like canine sundials. At night, no urban lights disturb the starry sky around my home. When I turn off the lights at night, it’s dark out here.

Soon we'll face that shortest day of the year with the least amount of daylight -- the winter solstice. The very next day, a new cycle begins in the wheel of the year. Each day gets a little longer until the equinox and shortly after, the summer solstice gives us the longest day of the year. Then we do it all over again. It was so important to know when days would lengthen again, this celestial event was observed and revered around the world, and ways to measure it cut or placed in stone. Complicated stone tunnels and specifically placed boulders of the like found in Stone Henge and Newgrange became prehistoric astronomical observatories to help keep track.  Shafts of solstice sunlight beamed down passages and rose between precisely placed megaliths with perfect timing. Tied to the sun and the growing season as we are, just knowing the sun's full shining face will warm the earth again is reason to celebrate. The solstice was long considered a time of great symbolism and divine power. How could it not be when it's as regular as clockwork?

The solstice is certainly a day to feel grateful. We live because of the sun. For many cultures, this is the time to celebrate with family and friends and share the spirit of giving. I once read how the Romans celebrated Saturnalia, the festival of light, with parties that lasted thirty days and culminated on the winter solstice. What an excellent idea! I too have reasons to rejoice. This year my husband and I are doing something different for the winter solstice – a twelve-hour drumming event. My drumming friends and family will join us either by stopping by for a time, or drumming the entire twelve hours with us non-stop. If that doesn’t bring the sun back, I don’t know what will.  ;)

But until the sun's return and the first greening of spring,  I’ll enjoy the silent beauty of the first snowfall and make my pots of soup, work my puzzles, and watch my dogs sprawl in the sunbeams on the floor. By the time I’ve surely had enough of winter, the seed catalogs will come in the mail and herald the thaw. Timing is everything.

Do you have any special solstice plans?

Guest Blog: Jane Toombs: Motivation Takes a Holiday!

The holiday season is upon us. Are you writing? Or feeling guilty because you’re not?

Should you feel guilty? My feeling about this is yes and no.

Yes, because though it’s certainly okay to take the time to celebrate both holidays, it’s not okay to drop all attempts to write during the holiday season. And, no, because though holidays are fun times, writing should be fun, too.

Maybe that’s the problem. Writing’s no longer fun for you. Great Scot! How did that happen? How did something you loved to do turn into a chore? This happens more often than many of us realize--especially if something like an illness or an important event has created a hiatus. Holidays, too, can bring about a hiatus.

How can a writer get back on track? First of all review your current WIP. Can you work up any enthusiasm for getting back to it? If not, stop right there. Is there something you’ve always wanted to try to write? Even something you felt might be a waste of time?

Maybe now is the time to have a go at whatever it, waste of time or not. You’ll never know if you don’t give it a shot. Since you have no enthusiasm for your WIP right now, and you do have a yen to try this new effort, what have you got to lose? Yes, I know—writing time. Still, you’re stuck anyway. So why not? Maybe it will be a waste of time. But who knows?

The Holiday Season is Upon Us!

With Thanksgiving (in the US) behind us, and after being stuffed to the gills for a week and probably a few pounds heavier from the over-indulgence, we are embarking on the month of prep for a joyous time of year! At least I hope for everyone this season will bring happiness and joy.
My Dog Dressed as a "Dog Reindeer" (He won the contest)
As we quickly approach the end of 2013, I want to take the time to reflect back on what I’ve done in the way of my writing. Not much!
I started last holiday season off with the first episode of a serial and had the subsequent episodes follow. The venture was a departure from what I normally write and I was disappointed by the way it was received. Due to pricing constraints with third party retailers, the price couldn’t be lowered, so I made a decision and fortunately my publisher agreed to the stories would be consolidated into one book. Christmas Eve, the entire story will be released with the final episodes added. Writing the stories was meant to be like a television series, or a comic book with new adventures happening for the main character. Sadly, the readers I pitched were interested, but the cost didn’t make sense or they said they didn’t want cliffhangers.
Before I made the change to consolidate, I started reading reviews on Amazon with other books that were set up similarly. Not good reviews. The readers were speaking loud and clear—they didn’t like the concept. Romance readers like their HEA or HFN!
Okay, drop back and punt. So I pose the question—do you make changes to suite your audiences, or say screw it and write your way and forget what anyone says? Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t deviate from the story line, but the delivery I changed. I refuse to compromise on writing to the masses like that because my stories and characters dictate what gets written, but I’m talking about trying something new. If it fails, would you rewrite and change the method of delivery?
With all that posed and said The Misadventures of Dick Grewcock with his new and updated final cover releases from Secret Cravings Publishing. Dick’s adventure actually begins on Christmas Eve so I find appropriate. As you can see from the tagline, Dick the computer geek has a few interesting adventures.

Tagline: Vampires, Zombies, Voodoo and a possible UFO sighting...take a wild ride with the computer geek on an impossible mission not to lose his humanity.
Blurb:
Dick Grewcock is a computer geek wanting more out of life. Yearning for a girlfriend, he takes steps to make his dream come true. Vampires are handsome, powerful, and have women falling over them—everything he’s not. Becoming one wasn’t an easy task and he had to find an real vampire willing to turn him.
Christmas Eve, he begins an impossible mission for his boss. Before he starts, a cute spitfire woman just as geeky as him walks into Vampires ‘R Us and life changes. He could have everything he wanted—a pretty girlfriend and a great job—if he could just convince her.
Noelle St. Nicholas is on a mission to save her home and won’t take no for an answer. The only one who can help her is Dick, the nerd staring at her and looking really weird.
Follow the adventures of Dick Grewcock to find true love without losing his humanity.

Until next month . . .
