Blame it on Ben ~by Rose Anderson

We've all noticed our mornings are darker as one season turns to the next. I rise before the sun most mornings, a habit left over from my busy young mom days. This coming Sunday has us setting our clocks back again. As a rural dweller whose bedroom window faces east, I have a decent circadian rhythm. Because of this I'm not a big fan of time changes. It takes me a week to get into a new time groove.

A while back I learned something interesting about this time change and I was floored to discover it. Many years ago while immersed in the history of lamps and lighting in America, I discovered I'd been saying the name of this time change wrong for decades. You see, I grew up in Chicago where vernacular speech is rife with curious liberty taking. (You may have noticed lol) We have our own way of talking and you can honestly tell what Chicago region a person is from by their distinctive Chicagoese. Because Chicago is plugged into my DNA, it was my long understanding that the bi-annual clock reset was called Daylight Savings Time. It's not! It's actually Daylight Saving Time. In this case Saving is a participle because it modifies Time and informs us of its nature --literally the activity of saving daylight. Drop that s on the floor and kick it out of sight.

Who started all this stuff that's been confusing Chicagoans for 180 years and causing this city-dweller turned country émigré to feel like a dummy? Ben Franklin.

While visiting Paris in 1784, Ben wrote an essay entitled An Economical Project -- just one of many of his discourses on thrift. Remember, he's the penny saved is a penny earned guy. In this essay he was talking about conserving candles by setting the clocks in favor of natural daylight. It all came about after an experience he had one particular morning. You see, most Parisians of his acquaintance didn't rise before noon. Parisians were hard partyers who started their soirees late, partied hardy all night long, then went to bed just before dawn.

Apparently, one such morning he woke hours ahead of time and for a moment was confused by the light of pre-dawn in his room. Perhaps
gentlemen who normally rise at noon might be thrown off by the sunrise. This is an actual account-- the story in his own words:

"I looked at my watch, which goes very well, and found that it was but six o clock; and still thinking it something extraordinary that the sun should rise so early, I looked into the almanac, where I found it to be the hour given for his rising on that day. I looked forward too, and found he was to rise still earlier every day towards the end of June; and that no time during the year he retarded his rising so long as till eight o clock. Your readers, who with me have never seen any sign of sunshine before noon, and seldom regard the astronomical part of the almanac, will be as much astonished as I was, when they hear of his rising so early; and especially when I assure them, that he gives light as soon as he rises. I am convinced of this."

Ever the master of wit, Franklin claimed that a noted philosopher assured him that he was mistaken. It was well known that there could be no light abroad at that hour. "His windows had not let the light in, but being open, had let the darkness out." he later said, "This event has given rise in my mind to several serious and important reflections."

This is basically what he is saying: Had he slept until noon, he would have missed six hours of daylight. And, as usual, he'd live six hours the following night by candlelight. It dawned on him just how expensive this lifestyle was. Ever frugal, he began calculating the cost of 100,000 Parisian families burning a pound of candles every two hours for an average of seven hours each evening between dusk and the late hour Parisians finally turned in. This is what he found:

183 nights between 20 March and 20 September times 7 hours per night of candle usage equals 1,281 hours for a half year of candle usage. Multiplying by 100,000 families gives 128,100,000 hours by candlelight. Each candle requires half a pound of tallow and wax, thus a total of 64,050,000 pounds. At a price of thirty sols per pounds of tallow and wax (two hundred sols make one livre tournois), the total sum comes to 96,075,000 livre tournois-- an immense sum that the city of Paris could save every year

Ben's revelation returned with him to America. He wrote it up with witty humor in Poor Richard's Almanac and people listened. Even the Parisian lamp makers got on board. Soon everyone was talking about this novel idea. In his autobiography, Franklin wrote of this thrifty concept in his travels to England:

"For in walking thro' the Strand and Fleet Street one morning at seven o clock, I observed there was not one shop open tho it had been daylight and the sun up above. "three hours -- the inhabitants of London choosing voluntarily to live much by candlelight and sleep by sunshine, and yet often complaining a little absurdly of the duty on candles and the high price of tallow."

With rare exception, we've been following this idea since Benjamin Franklin thought it up. I personally think it's a good idea to limit the use of artificial light. Our brains need darkness as this Sleep Foundation article states. What's more, conserving energy helps protect the environment.  Some people intentionally limit their use of artificial light. I have a friend who does this and this habit it appeals to me. Unfortunately, my husband is a lamp person. If there's a light bulb anywhere, he'll turn it on.

Here's one man who tried a no electricity experiment for a month. Very interesting.
http://jdmoyer.com/2010/03/04/sleep-experiment-a-month-with-no-artificial-light/

As a writer, I'd find this very hard to do because I need my laptop plugged in and working when the spark of creativity strikes. Having gone back in time through many living history events, it would be very easy for me to live by candlelight in the evenings. How about you? Have you ever tried low light or candlelight in the evenings?

The Story of Stingy Jack & How he Tricked the Devil ~by Rose Anderson

Halloween is coming up and it's my favorite holiday. I love this time of year. I love the colors, the frosty crisp smell in the air, the holiday traditions, all of it. Even my hair has taken on its autumn pelage and gone darker. I don’t know if it’s a redhead thing, a trick of light, or just a peculiar trait for a peculiar person, but people comment on it every year and have done so my entire life. It’s as predictable as the changing seasons.

Perhaps you've heard me mention that I've been writing a series for years. As it stands, the unnamed work I call my magnum opus (MO for short) is five books long and approximately 5k words in toto. For today's post I'm sharing a snippet from the MO about a family gathering. I haven't determined whether this bit will be in the series. My characters have a way of sharing much more than I need them to share. The following was inspired by a folktale.  I hope you enjoy.

The main players~
Six year old twins Mac and Aggie
Family elder Maddock
Connor (the twins father) and his brother Liam
Liam's best friend and cousin Aidan (known for deviling their elders)

The Story of Stingy Jack and How he Tricked the Devil ~

Mac and Aggie settled onto their father's lap with their popcorn balls. Aggie took a bite. It was difficult biting without front teeth, but the six-year-old’s incisors did their best. She gave her elder cousin a snaggle-toothed grin and asked, “What story are you telling tonight, Maddock?”

Maddock hadn’t decided until the moment the little sprite smiled. He leaned close. “I’m thinking I'll tell ye the story of Stingy Jack. What do ye think, Connor?”

Connor laughed. Aggie looked up at him, a question bright in her green eyes. “Do you know this story, Dad? Is it a funny one?”

He winked at Maddock and gave his daughter a hug. “Wait and see.”

Maddock chuckled, and began, “So once there was a blacksmith named Jack. Everyone from miles around called him Jack, ye see, for this was in the days when no one used last names…”

Across the fire, Aidan nudged Liam. “Wasn't Jack was a farmer?”

An accomplished storyteller, Maddock used the moment to his advantage. He met the eyes of the children around the fire, and said, “True, Jack was a farmer too. An' a good one at that because he could shoe his own oxen. Now Jack had a wonderful sense of humor an' he loved playing tricks. He found it great fun to bore a hole in someone's water bucket or paint a white stripe down the back of a neighbor’s black house cat.”

The children laughed.

“But Jack never harmed a soul. He was a very careful man -- careful with his beasts, careful with his craft, and careful with his coin. Some say too careful with his coin. While Jack wasn’t a stingy man in his business, he was a stingy man at the pub. Well, one evening when the animals were bedded down and the coals of his forge banked well, Jack grew thirsty an' thinking a pint might do him good, he headed straight to the pub. But who do ye think he met there?”

Several children asked at once, “Who, Maddock?”

Maddock paused then suddenly blurted, “The devil himself!”

Liam nudged Aidan. “Didn’t the devil meet Jack on the road?”

Maddock coughed. “Aye, well, the devil gets around, no? So, Jack sat himself down at a table an' had several pints of stout ale. Desiring another, he opened his purse but there was only enough coin for the drinks he’d already had. Now the devil saw all the empty glasses an' watched Jack turn out his pockets looking for more coins. He thought he’d be an easy soul to take for his own, ye see. Pulling up a bench, the devil sat beside Jack. So busy was Jack, he didn’t realize who sat beside him. The devil said, "Ye look troubled laddie. Can I help ye?"

Jack replied, "I had a long and thirsty day. I worked the iron and I worked my fields. Now I’m too tired to go home for more money, but it’s thirsty I am."

The devil stroked his pointy beard and said, "I’d like to help ye laddie, but I dinna help unless there’s something in it for me."

Jack finally noticed of the pointy beard. He looked at the floor and saw the cloven hoofs. Though he pretended to be confused and befuddled by drink, Jack knew who the devil he was talking to!”

Chuckles and giggles went around the fire at the play on words.

“Now, Jack was in the mood to play one of his tricks. He knew this creature could turn himself into any form he wished an' he thought a moment before saying, "I’d sell my soul for one more coin with which to buy another pint."

Well, no finer words could be spoken to a devil out hunting souls. He said, "Ah, there is something I can do for you after all, laddie. I’ll turn myself into a coin so you can buy your last drink, then I’ll change myself back an' your soul will come with me to Hell."

Jack scratched his nose, then he scratched his chin, then he picked up his empty glass and drained the last drop from it. He licked his lips looking wistfully at the jug the barmaid carried. Then, meeting the devil’s eyes, he said, "I’m in the mood for a good bargain such as that!"

"In a flash, the devil changed himself into a gold coin. And just as fast, Jack grabbed it up an' stuffed it into his wallet!”

Aggie was wide-eyed. “Couldn’t the devil get out again?”

Maddock chuckled, “Oh no, ye see inside that wallet was a copper sator square.”

Aggie turned to her father. “I don’t know what a sator square is, Dad.”

“It’s a very old luck charm, honey.”

Maddock nodded, “Aye, and it bound the devil inside Jack’s wallet for ten whole years.”

Aidan whispered to Liam, “Didn’t Jack trick the devil up a tree?”

Narrowing his eyes at the pair, Maddock continued, “At the end of ten years Jack opened the wallet an' said, "Tell me ye won’t be taking my soul to Hell will ye. Make your vow, devil. Tis the only way I’ll be releasing ye."

The devil laughed, "Damn my eyes, you’re good. Yes, ye have my word on it!"

With that Jack released him. So years and years passed and eventually Jack grew to be an old man. One day the devil appeared an' said to him, "I’ve been a watchin’ you since the day you released me Jack. So ye love playing tricks, do ye?"

Jack chuckled, "Aye. As long as they bring harm to none, I do." He’d always loved a good prank, ye see, but was always careful not to hurt another in the process. That’s a good way to be no?”

The children nodded.

“Well, do ye believe it, the old devil laughed! "I like tricks myself", says he. "If I canna make ye stay with me, at least come for a visit. We can discuss the fine art of trickery an' maybe I’ll get some new ideas."

Jack thought a moment. He was an old man with nothing better to do. He no longer worked the forge an' farm. That hard work now belonged to his strong sons an' grandsons. As long as he didn’t have to stay in Hell, he might enjoy listening to the devils exploits now an' again. Especially in the fall when his old bones ached an' the heat would feel good. He said, "Alright. If I don’t have to stay, I’ll visit ye."

Reaching into his pocket, the devil pulled out an ember that would never burn out. He handed it to Jack who promptly dropped it on the ground.

Blowing on his singed fingers, Jack tipped his head to the ember an' asked, "What am I supposed to do with this?"

"Alive or dead, your soul canna see to find its way unless I bring ye myself. Carry this with you an' for one night each year you’ll be able to find your way to my world an' back."

"Fair enough." Jack told him. Taking an old turnip from the field, he carved out the center an' then whimsy took him an' he carved out eyes, a nose, an' a mouth. He carefully placed the ember inside where it made the little lantern’s face glow.

“Jack o ‘lanterns!” Aggie shouted and, looking quite the part, gave Maddock her snaggle-toothed smile.

“Aye, an' every year you’ll see Jack walking at night with his smiling lantern lighting his way to Hell.”

Have You Been Enticed?

When the Romance Books '4' Us authors got together last year and decided to put together a boxed set, I was overjoyed. I love writing short stories and novellas. For those who think writing short is easy, all I have to say is that you must never have tried it! There were days when I wished I had more wiggle room so I could include at least five thousand more words but after agreeing to a word count, I knew I had to write tighter.

First of all, I had to rein in the impulse to give secondary characters too much page time. Some secondary characters will waltz off with the story if you let them, which only means they need a story of their own. Take notes and move on but don't give them their head or you might be cutting five thousand words, which takes time you might not have. It's also aggravating!

Next on the agenda was determining how complicated the plot needed to be. I tend to give my main characters a previous relationship so I don't have to set up why they interact the way they do. In I'LL BE SEEING YOU, my hero and heroine, Jack and Lulu have a war-time fling and she never expects to see him again. This is a romance, so I knew that wasn't going to happen!

Before all of this was actually decided, I knew I wanted a story set in a period in history that has always fascinated me. The men and women who lived through the WW2 era are considered by many to be the Greatest Generation. These people had just come through a depression and were still struggling with the after effects. Did you know that the armed services had a difficult time filling their ranks because the Great Depression the country had just been through had devastated the health of so many? Do you remember the scene in Captain America where Steve Rogers was determined to be 4F? That happened more than anyone liked to talk about back then. Just another reason that this generation has never ceased to amaze me.

The time period was ripe with different settings and since I'm an "old movie" buff, Hollywood beckoned. I love nothing better than a fun "mash-up" so I threw in a little Hollywood and included a paranormal twist. Believe it or not, the plot isn't all that complicated. Handsome hero with a secret meets Plain Jane for what seems like a war-time fling. Love, mad scientists, a creepy sanitarium and a little howling at the moon are in the offing. Enjoy!

I’ll Be Seeing You by Paris Brandon (PG)

May 1944
USO Club, Los Angeles, California

There were girls in soft summer dresses, all pink and flowery, smiling and perfumed. None of them would have turned down the handsome lieutenant. Why ask her?
She placed a hand on his solid chest. “Did somebody put you up to this? Did you lose a bet or something?”
He loosened his grip and took a deep breath right before he slid her left hand to his shoulder. When his fingers brushed over the third finger of her right hand, and detected the evidence she was a widow, he uttered a harsh, whispered word that might have been a vehement curse in another language.
“Or something,” he said very clearly, his breath warm against her ear. “Have you ever felt like you’ve lost your mind?”
“Daily. What’s that got to do with you asking me to dance?”
“What’s your name?”
“Lulu Lane. What comes after Lieutenant?” she asked, trying not to get lost in the sensation of being moved around the floor by a handsome man while people stared.
“Jack. Jack Howland,” he snapped, but then he snugged her tighter to his chest and his hand drifted over her back as if he were soothing a wound.
“Asking me to dance doesn’t seem to be making you very happy. Why did you?”
He looked as if he were losing an argument only he knew about.
“I leave in two days. I shouldn’t have spoken to you, let alone asked you to dance, because no matter what I say, it’s not going to come out right.”
“It’s not going to come out at all if you keep talking in riddles.”
He looked surprised for a moment and she was gratified that she could at least break through his maddening, mysterious behavior. “I’ve got forty-eight hours left on a three-day pass and I want to spend it with you. Clear enough for you?”
It took a few moments for what he’d said to sink in, and even then she had trouble believing him. This had to be some kind of a joke.
“You’re smart, Howland; I’ll give you that. You picked out the only wallflower in the bunch—”
“I don’t want to scare you, Lulu, but you don’t fool me. I’m glad nobody else has sense enough to see past the glasses and sensible shoes. You’re an open book for the lucky somebody willing to peel back the cover.
“I’m not looking for romance. I’m looking for forty-eight hours with someone who looked back at me the same way I was looking at them.”

Before I get out of here, I need to tell you that the wonderful cover for I'LL BE SEEING YOU was made by our very own, Rose Anderson. Thank you, Rose!

Until next month,
Happy Reading, Everyone!
