Interview of Author Jenna Rutland

Today I'm pleased to present an interview of romance author, Jenna Rutland.

Latest book: Just For the Summer
Buy Link: Barnes & Noble

BIO:
Jenna Rutland lives in a small Michigan community with her husband, son and senior cat. Her daughter and son-in-law have recently given Jenna the awesome title of grandmother!

While her days are spent working as a medical transcriptionist, her nights are filled writing contemporary romance—stories of love, laughter and happily ever after. Guess which occupation is more fun?
She is a member of RWA and is active in her local chapter. After several years on the MVRWA board, she now chairs the group’s annual fall brainstorming weekend as well as acts as food coordinator for several other events.

Jenna takes pleasure in spending time with her family. She also enjoys reading, gardening and loves the challenge of a new recipe.

She welcomes the chance to connect with writers and readers. Head to her Connect page to join her on Facebook or Twitter, sign up for her newsletter, or e-mail her.

Q: What’s the first thing you did when you received word you’d sold a book?
A: Jumped up and down, cried, called my husband, and then my sister to tell them my great news!

Q: Who is your favorite character in your book and why?
A: I love Sam. He’s a sweet little boy of eight who adores his father and longs for a mother.

Q: Do all your heroes and all heroines look the same in your mind as you “head write”?
A: Nope. I’ve got a precise image of them in my mind so they speak differently and have original thoughts. Otherwise, I’m afraid my books would sound like part 2 of the original.

Q: What hobby do you enjoy when not writing?
A: I love to garden (sore muscles and all), a new recipe is always a great challenge, and I love to read. My greatest joy is spending time with my husband, son, daughter, son-in-law, and beautiful granddaughter.

Q: What’s your strongest point as a writer?
A: I’ve been complimented on my dialogue and scene settings as well as pacing. I’m always trying to up the conflict!

Q: Facebook, MySpace, Blogs, Chats, or Twitter. Which do you like best and why?
A: I struggle with fresh ideas for my blog. I’m on the newbie side of learning Facebook. I feel most comfortable with Twitter because it’s short, quick and seems to be more “in your face.” LOL.

BLURB:
His temptation. Her secret. Their summer.

Dani Sullivan has come to Lake Bliss to write her latest cookbook and take a breather. After the year she’s had, she deserves a summer retreat to reevaluate priorities and make peace with past decisions. But from the moment single dad and sheriff Matt Reagan shows up, she has a hard time convincing herself that a life away from Lake Bliss could beat the life she might have here.

Recently divorced Matt is ready for a new relationship, but he doesn’t want short-term—his son needs permanence, and so does Matt’s heart. Unfortunately, it’s the smart-mouthed and sinfully sexy Ms. Sullivan who catches his eye. But when Matt learns Dani’s secrets, will he still want her to stay? Or will her chance for love last just for the summer?

EXCERPT:
One of these children could be her son.

Dani Sullivan clutched the windowsill of her rented Lake Bliss bungalow and watched the small group of boys who played at the water’s edge. She searched each child for something familiar, desperate after eight years to see the sweet face of one little auburn-haired boy.

Would she recognize anything of herself in the child? Or would his features trigger an unwanted memory?

A woman clad in a floral one-piece bathing suit hustled out of a lawn chair. Her long blonde ponytail swayed as she rushed toward a boy wearing bright red swim trunks who stood near two other kids throwing sand. He wore a navy Detroit Tigers ball cap, and tufts of his brown hair peeked out the back. The shade reminded Dani of nutmeg, a color that matched her own curls at that age. The shape of his face and the way he’d run—swinging his arms like they were the source of his locomotion—seemed so familiar. So right.

Her son?

An image of a baby boy flashed in her mind. A newborn, wrapped in a hospital-issued blanket, dark-eyed with a tuft of auburn hair. Her beautiful baby, whom Dani had promised a happy life.

As another woman’s son.

Fueled by an overwhelming urge to get closer, she scurried onto the screened-in porch and grasped a wooden beam for support. Outboard motors roared on the lake, drowning out conversation. The woman appeared to scold the children next to him then guided the boy to sit on the end of the dock where it met the beach. The others gathered around. The woman removed the boy’s cap and tilted his head upward. The child swiped first at his right eye then at the woman’s hand.

That could be her son’s adoptive mother.

Nausea tightened Dani’s gut.

Without thought, she pushed open the screen door and took a few steps toward the beach. The sun was harsh on her face; the mixture of dried-out grass and weeds pricked her bare feet. She pulled her sunglasses from on top of her head and slid them onto her nose.

The voices at the beach escalated, and the woman grasped the boy’s hand. Once again, he swatted her away and rubbed his eye. She massaged her temple in apparent agitation.

Instinct kicked in. Dani jogged the few yards to the beach and made her way to where the boy sat on the dock covering his eye. “Can I help? I’m a nurse.”

The woman turned, her eyebrow raised in question.

“I’m Dani Sullivan, the new renter in cottage three. I thought maybe the boy needed help.”

The woman glanced at the child, then back to Dani. “I think he’s got sand in his eye. He won’t let me look, and I’m not sure what to do.”

Dani removed her sunglasses and squatted to get a better look at him, and he pulled his hand away from his face for just a moment. Though his eye was red, she didn’t see any sand on his cornea, and his eye was no longer watering. She took the opportunity to scan his eyelashes, his mouth, his nose. Did they resemble hers? She’d seen her son eight years ago for barely an hour. Would she even know if this boy was him?

He rose from the dock. The faintest hint of unease surfaced in his uncovered eye. “Don’t even think about giving me a shot.”

His comment surprised a laugh from her. She would have made a similar remark. “I promise—no shots. Okay?”

After a quick nod, he lowered his hand, uncovering his eye. She took a few steps closer, the sun-heated sand gritty between her toes. She concentrated on dragging the humid air into her lungs. “What’s your name, honey?”

“Sam Reagan.”

Sam. A name she knew but hadn’t chosen.

Her son.

Interview of Author Denyse Bridger

Today I'm pleased to present an interview or romance author, Denyse Bridger.

Latest Book: RECKLESS ASSIGNATION

Siren Book Reviews
Sensual Reads

BIO:
Canadian born and bred, Denysé has been signed with over a dozen publishing houses in the past nine years. Recently winning the prestigious title of Best Author of 2012 from the Predators and Editors site, the best-selling author has been nominated for and won numerous awards. Never confined to one genre, she writes in many and has garnered a loyal audience of readers over the past decade.

Q: What part of the book is the easiest for you to write? Why?
A: Usually the easiest part of any book for me is the first few chapters, because this is when the idea is fresh and new, and my imagination is fired up and excited about the story. The stage is being set, and I’m getting to know the characters and what they’re all about, which is always interesting. My problem tends to occur about half-way when I’ve lost the first real sparks of challenge, and I get bored. That’s when I have to push myself to finish the story. It gets exciting for me again when I’m in edits, which is something many people hate, but for me it’s the best part of the whole process when I’m working with a good editor.

Q: Who is your favorite character in your book and why?
A: I tend to always like the hero and the heroine about equally. Sometimes, if he’s really wicked and bent, even the villain becomes a favourite because he’s so much fun to write. The hero dominates the board most of the time, because he’s usually the one who is making things happen. The heroine is making changes occur on an emotional level in many ways. So, it’s a balance, despite its differences. I don’t tend to write heroines who are kick-ass except in the brains department, if she isn’t smart and savvy, why would a strong, Alpha male fall for her?

Q: If one of your books became a movie, which celebrity would you like to star as one of your heroes? Tell us about your hero.
A: Well, in reality the face of my current hero belongs to a very handsome model, not an actor, so I’d be really hard-pressed to name an actor! The hero of this book is a former military intelligence operative, world class James Bond type. He and the woman he loves more than his next breath have been separated for years because being in the same business drove them apart. Each of them tried to protect the other by leaving, and ten years later they’ve found each other again, but the past isn’t done with them yet...

Q: What’s your strongest point as a writer?
A: It seems to depend largely on the editor’s POV, really. Some have told me my strongest asset is my ability to write emotion, others say setting a scene that makes the reader feel like they’re in the story. Some have said dialogue. So I suppose there are several strengths that work together to make a strong voice and style. I like to think my strongest point is the ability to create people that readers care about and want to know better.

Q: You’re on a remote island with a handsome man, a computer, and a “mysterious” source of electricity to power your computer. What do you do?
A: Interview my handsome companion, then write a dazzling story about him that impresses him and entertains us both. *lol*

Q: Facebook, MySpace, Blogs, Chats, or Twitter. Which do you like best and why?
A: I have to admit, I love Twitter best! And I like the old MySpace. Both more than Facebook. Unfortunately, Facebook is a reality we all have to deal with in this business. I love my blogs, too. BUT, if I could only pick one, I think it would probably be Facebook for practical reasons, the diversity and reach it has is too necessary at this point.

BLURB:
A haunted and abandoned hotel on Halloween is the setting for a very private party between two lovers, one of them a world-class, sophisticated intelligence operative who’s trying to teach his young and innocent lady that curiosity can sometimes take you places you’d be better not to go. Amid elaborate trappings meant to scare and entice, Rick’s seduction takes some unexpected but wickedly wonderful twists. But, Rick also has a lesson to learn, when his past collides with his present, and almost destroys everything he cherishes most.

EXCERPT:
Prologue
Rick Leighton watched from his vantage point on the third floor of the crumbling hotel. His mind was flip-flopping continually as he both waited for his careful planning to reward him when Cindi walked into this trap and worried about recent developments on the job. Rick had worked in espionage for over fifteen years and he’d made more enemies than he cared to think about. Lately, he was increasingly aware of the shadows of his past closing in on his dreams and his waking hours.

He’d left the intelligence field for a few years but inevitably been lured back. He was considered one of the best in the business and, ego aside, he knew he was good at the job. He was something of a legend in his field, and a huge part of it was his successful use of the attraction so many women felt for him. He’d never cared deeply enough for it to be a problem, but he had tired of being the agency whore and it was instrumental in his leaving. Then came the surprise of his life—and his biggest weakness now—the woman he’d fallen in love with so unexpectedly. Her father had been his mentor in many ways and, strained as their relationship was at the moment, Rick knew Josh never stopped protecting Cindi either.

He shook off his concerns the moment he saw familiar golden-blonde hair, focusing on the elaborate game he’d set in place for Cinthya Bradley. Her presence filled him with conflicting responses, part of him furious at her lack of care in coming and part of him undeniably thrilled by her arrival. He’d been planning this for weeks, and now it was in play.

Drawing back from the window, he smiled and extinguished the single candle that he’d lit while waiting. Deep within the cavernous building, he heard a sound that was suspiciously like a door being opened. He frowned as he considered the direction it had come from, somewhere in the back of the ancient hotel. Cindi should have been at the front. The second thump was at the front and he dismissed the earlier sound as he slipped into position.

The Mayfair was an old, old hotel, and a lot of things went bump in the night when winds blew through the smashed-out windows and the various entrances to the place creaked and groaned. He was being overly paranoid. He’d felt someone lurking in the shadows for days, but no one ever revealed themselves. He was suffering from job stress and needed time off. It wasn’t the first time he’d felt ghosts around him. Occupational hazard.

His grin slid into place when he heard the first telltale squeak of the stairs…

Anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to chat with everyone, and I look forward to any questions or comments from the readers here. I also hope to have some big news to share with everyone soon.
Love and blessings to you all.

They’re freaking gods, escorts her friend hired so Piper’s thirtieth birthday is unforgettable with the bondage and submission she’s fantasized about. Carnal games that awaken Piper’s sensuality, while her voluptuous figure and sweet vulnerability fuels both men’s animal hunger.

Hell yeah. By day, she’ll be good. During their wanton acts, the three of them will explore their growing bond as they’re very, very bad…

________

Then on June 25, my erotic paranormal Deep Within Me, Book Two in The Prophecy series, releases from Samhain. Here's the cover art and blurb. You can read an excerpt here: http://store.samhainpublishing.com/deep-within-p-7431.html

She hasn’t emerged from death unchanged. Now her healing gift leaves her drained, weak. Worse, Zeke is still tortured with visions of a woman covered in blood.

Liz aches for a future with Zeke, to always know the thrill of his body imprisoning hers with mindless pleasure. At her reanimation, she redoubles her determination to use her healing gifts to help his people—except Zeke refuses to allow her to use them.

But with her clan leader set to launch his next attack, Zeke and Jacob have no choice but to try to heal Liz with the same sensual force she used to save them. Yet it may not be enough to avert a merciless plan that will test Zeke’s humanity, risk Liz’s life—and threaten their timeless bond.

Warning: Features a determined hunk and a babe who won’t be tamed, loads of lusty sex including some menage, a ton of unrelenting peril, and love that knows no limit. In other words, a romance hot enough to vaporize steel.

Core Strength...

I've been dealing with the effects of too many hours at the computer and not paying attention to the signs that my body was giving me. Consequently, I've been shuttling back and forth between the chiropractor and the massage therapist trying to get my body to the point where I can start the process all over again. Like most humans, I don't seem to learn from my mistakes.

The whole problem can be traced to the fact that I've been so caught up in writing that I haven't addressed the core issue; which happens to be...my core strength. The body is like a story. If the center is not strong enough to weather whatever you've put it through, at some point it will break down and lose interest in carrying you to the end.

With a story, your reader will lose interest if your mid-point is weak. A sagging middle is my greatest fear (pun intended).

I have a tendency to drop my characters into the middle of the action during the story's opening and the challenge is always to keep the pace flowing and try to find an interesting way of delivering the information the reader needs throughout the middle.

Personally, I need to do this on a daily basis, both personally and professionally. I know if I exercise before starting to work that I'll feel better and have a better chance of producing something that doesn't end up in the cut file. Maybe the answer is to break up the exercise, a ten-minute walk a couple of times a day. There's always the option of alternating the type of exercise, just to make it interesting.

Today's rant was brought to you by an incredibly cranky lady who has dealt with thunderstorms, no internet connection this morning and a neighbor, who didn't have any excuse for leaving their dog out in the rain to bark all night long. I would have howled too if my stupid human ignored me.

I think I'd like a do-over, or at the very least to re-set this day and start from the mid-point. Last month, I attended the Romantic Times convention and had a wonderful time, met some fabulous authors and collected some nifty swag.

Stop by and say hello, share a tip about sagging middles (personal or professional) or share a memory from the RT conference. Someone who comments today will receive an RT Swag Bundle that contains at least one book or movie.

Oh, about the cover. I used it because it's my favorite so far and has the ability to perk me up:)

Until next month,
Hugs,
Paris

Hello! A First Post from Rose Anderson

Calliope the writer's Muse
Hello everyone, my name is Rose Anderson. I’m a multi-published author of erotic romance and recent addition to the terrific twenty gold members that make up Romance Books ‘4’ Us. I’ve enjoyed this group since discovering it two and a half years ago, so I’m very happy to be involved.
From here on out, the 4th of the month will be my posting day. I promise to make my posts interesting (yes, I proudly fly my nerd flag). Consider this my invitation to share your own thoughts in comments below. Let’s get a conversation going!

I thought I’d do my first post on inspiration.

Were you to go looking for a dictionary definition for inspiration, you’d find an interesting corollary – not only does inspiration mean a divine influence directly and immediately exerted upon the mind or soul, it also means to draw in breath.

As a writer I understand that. Occasionally inspiration will come flying out of the blue – a thought immediately exerted upon my mind and soul as involuntary as drawing a breath. It’s remarkable really. And as if that wasn’t enough, there are times where I feel like I’m in the back seat and someone else is driving! That happened to me with Loving Leonardo. Curiously enough, a little dog named Maggie had a paw in it too.

Maggie is my daughter’s little terrier mix. Small in stature, but large in personality, Maggie has the typical terrier brain. If you could read the thought bubble over her head it would say: Murder murder murder squirrel! Murder murder murder. A wild turkey walked through the yard today. I thought she was going to explode in outrage. Honestly, all this little pooch thinks about is chomping squirrels, chipmunks, birds, rabbits, anything really. When my daughter lived in Colorado, Maggie held elk in the same murderous regard.

To distract her from these lethal thoughts, I turn on the TV with the volume down. Maggie then makes herself comfortable in her dog bed and watches it. Seriously. She’s a regular couch potato who loves cat food commercials and goes nuts over the Geico zipline pig. My friends and family find it hilarious.

So one day last summer, Maggie was watching the mid-day news and I didn’t realize it was loud enough for me to hear. I rarely watch TV so pay it little mind. That day’s news was all about politics, specifically progressives and women’s issues. Suddenly Elenora Schwaab, Victorian suffragette, sprang fully formed from my head like Athena sprung from Zeus.

The next thing I knew, Ellie proposed marriage to Nicolas, an art historian who was also a confirmed bachelor and just happened to be a gay man. To my complete surprise he said yes and they went off to Venice on a wild adventure to find a book Leonardo da Vinci created for his long-time lover Salai. And wouldn’t you know, they met Luca aboard ship, himself a historian with a keen interest in Leonardo da Vinci. As the compatibility, friendship, and affection grew between them, their time together became sensually charged. Before I realized what was happening, they’d given me a polyamorous love story. I wasn’t looking for that and I wasn’t expecting it either, but the details came pouring out as if I were the biographer taking notes on their real lives – like I was in the back seat going for a ride. (I suspect Calliope the writer's Muse was in the driver's seat.)

As far as inspiration goes, the divine influence directly and immediately exerted upon my mind that day helped me create one of my favorite stories. I can honestly see a series of Ellie, Nicolas, and Luca’s adventures on the horizon. What began in Loving Leonardo continues in Loving Leonardo – The Quest. The story is all about love without boundaries, for really, we never choose whom we love. Love chooses us.

Interview of John Quinlan: "The Most Tatttooed Cover Model"!

Hello ladies! John Quinlan is here and sat down with me for an interview. Now, I did my best to get all the juicy details, but I also had to make sure I didn’t get…too…personal. *wink wink*

Hello John! Thank you so much for being here on Romance Books '4' Us! I’ve seen you around on not only covers, but in social media. You are so nice and it’s great to have you!

NOTE: For more photos and information about John, go to the Romance Books '4' Us website and look under the Red Heart, VIP section: http://www.romancebooks4us.com!

Q: First off, tell us more about yourself. What is it you do?
A: I have to say the feeling is mutual Carrie Anne, you are an amazing writer and I am also very happy to be here today on Romance Books '4' Us. I am a humble guy and over the years I have tried to do the best I can each and every day with all the projects I have been blessed to be involved with. I have always been focused on health and wellness ever since I was a boy. Early on in my teens and early 20’s I was involved with junior bodybuilding and from there I had my stint in the professional wrestling world. I was privileged to meet and become friends with legends in that business so it was quite an experience to say the least. I have been fortunate enough to have modeled brands of apparel from all over the world. I have been named an Official International brand ambassador and spokes model for companies as far away as Switzerland and Japan. I am also a physique model competitor; supplement company image model as well as being referred to as the most tattooed male romance cover model in the world.

Q: How did you get started in modeling?
A: I was always involved with fitness back then when I was starting out so I had the right mind set. I was lucky enough to be selected by random photographers and artists who liked my look to participate in their projects at that time. Photos for fitness brochures and local advertisements were nice because I was already training anyway so things like that were just an added bonus. It is a nice feeling when people request you, they liked what I brought to the table so it gave me the drive to train harder and become more focused. From this foundation I just became more flexible when other genres of modeling crossed my path. I think, being a male model, I am always learning new things in this business. I am always asking questions because doing this can only help me become a better model.

Q: Do you have a favorite modeling shoot or spread you’ve done outside of romance covers?
A: All the shoots and spreads I have done have been very special as each one leaves me with lasting memories I will always cherish. I really liked the model shoot I just did this past March with Sandra Kimball. One of the themes during the shoot included military apparel with dog tags which I was honored to do. I have a great respect for all of our service men and women of our military who fight to protect this great country every day so it was definitely a special theme.

Q: You’ve done body building, right? How did you get started in that?
A: As a boy all of my friends were training and I just followed along with what they were doing. Initially I began training to get stronger for sports and as time went on I began hanging with guys and girls who were more serious about their training. I began to fine tune everything with my diet and schedule and I have kept progressing to this day. I was involved with bodybuilding in my teens and early 20’s many moons ago and it was a great experience. I met so many great people that I am still friends with which is my proudest accomplishment.

Q: Are there any misconceptions about body building you’d like to clear up here? I will confess, I only know what TV tells me about it, so I’d love to know more!
A: I think the biggest thing that many people don’t realize is all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. Many people think that these guys just workout and look the way they look. It takes discipline and focus to stay on the righteous path with consistent training and proper nutrition. The sacrifices are huge; things like missing out on social events, keeping a strict diet and getting up early while the rest of the world is sleeping. These athletes work very hard and they will always have my 100% respect for their dedication to the sport.

Q: Now onto romance, because really, us ladies love romance! How did you end up on romance covers?
A: Many writers and authors encouraged me to go in that direction. I was told I had a great look for it and after quite some time I decided to take the leap of faith and check it out.

Q: Do you have a favorite cover you’ve been on? And don’t worry, we won’t play favorites. J
A: I do have a favorite image and it is going to be used as a book cover by writer Kharisma Rhayne for her Dark Retribution: Warriors of Malice Series. It is my “Angel of Satan” cover art image. People have told me this image represents exactly what Satan would look like in the human form which is the look I was going for. My friend showed his 7 year old son the image and he freaked out and ran away!

Q: Can you tell us how a photo shoot works?
A: The first thing as a model during a photo shoot one has to remember is to be confident in front of the camera. The best photos come when I am as natural as possible. It all depends on the time of year, theme and purpose of that particular shoot as to what goes on. Whether the shoot is outside or indoors the routine is basically the same. The day of the shoot is the fun part, getting prepared a few weeks out is the challenging part. Keeping my diet clean so my physique is respectable for the camera is a must and with all the great food in the world it takes some strong will power on the way to getting there but after the shoot is over its party time!

Q: Do you have any embarrassing stories from a photo shoot? I’ve been to a couple shoots and, boy, let me tell you, sometimes they get a bit out there! LOL
A: I could be here forever on this question and I really couldn’t name just one because there are so many and they are all equally worthy of the title most embarrassing. One moment that stands out was many years ago I had to pose for artist Brian Dow as he was doing a project which involved me dressing up in a toga waiving a club looking mean. The catch was I had to do it in the gym aerobics room and I was still doing it when all the girls were coming in for their kick boxing class. They all thought it was hilarious. I knew most of them and they were all cool and it was all in good fun but still I have to say we have all felt that feeling of, “oh no!” Initially when I saw them staring to come in I wanted to hide in the corner but quickly realized there was no escape and just went with it. After it was over they told me I played a good ogre and I just laughed with a bit of sarcasm but they were sincere and it was all good. It was nice because when all was said and done the image of me as the evil troll was used on the cover of the book, “The War of Trolls” by Tracey West. All in a day’s work.

Q: Now, I’d be self-conscious being a model—hence why I’m the writer—but do you have a routine get your body ready? (Now I’m blushing because that came out differently than I wanted LOL)
A: It all depends on the shoot. Usually they involve having to bare some skin in one way or another so as I get a bit closer to my date I will tighten up on my diet as necessary. I may also increase my exercise regimen and cardio depending on where I am physically during that time.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: I have to be honest when I say live for the moment and try not to plan the future too much. Great things happen when one least expects them to and more often than none whenever I have planned things for the future in the past they have never worked out the way I thought. There are always bumps in the road along the way so being flexible and being able to adapt is key. I take things day by day and do the best can all the time. Whatever plans God has for John Quinlan will play out as we go.

How can we get in touch with you?

Thank you so much John for coming here! We’re so happy you’re a part of the romance community and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!

SHORT AND SWEET

Sorry for this different post for today.

I’ve been sick for over two weeks now, and my mind is a bit fuzzy. And since I feel like death warmed over, highlighting my recent release about vampires and zombies seems appropriate. So, I’ll make it short and sweet and give you all a sneak peak of A Vampire’s Bite of Flesh, Episode 3 of The Misadventures of Dick Grewcock.

BLURB:

Dick Grewcock is a vampire working full-time as a computer consultant for Vampires ‘R Us. He had everything he wanted—a pretty girlfriend and a great job—or so he thought. A hurricane blows through town a week before the Fourth of July making a real mess, including riling the sugar craving mush-brain humans. Operation Zombie Takedown begins at Fang Shui, the local vampire bar, to get the infestation under control. Dick’s existence was about to change—again.
Noelle St. Nicholas is Dick’s girlfriend, but four months ago she met with an unfortunate accident and ended up in a cryopreservation chamber at a high security laboratory. She’s revived and Dick isn’t sure she’ll forgive him for what he did.
Dick battles zombies with fireworks exploding and learns what it means to be the vampire he was meant to be, but at what price to losing what’s left of his humanity?

EXCERPT:

Dick blinked a few times, adjusting his eyes to the brighter light and to gain his bearings. The stench of sweat and cigarette smoke filled his nostrils and every breath he took burned his lungs. God, he knew having the planning meeting here would be a mistake. Why not the VRU offices? At least they were private and smoke-free. But, no, that would have been too easy. Vlad insisted on checking out his latest acquisition, and as he put it, the bar was a good place to keep an eye on others in his coven. Killing two birds, yada, yada, yada.
Dancers scantily-clad in G-strings and sequined pasties climbed, turned and twisted on the brass poles bolted on the five mini-stages scattered around the room. Gyrating couples, males, females and others—Dick couldn’t tell what they were—writhed in a sea of limbs, music, and flashing multi-colored lights. He glanced around, disoriented from the pounding in his head. Where the heck was the bar? And where was his partner?
Urgh! A partner. Another vamp. A pain in the ass vamp cohort his sire insisted on him having until the zombie infestation was exterminated. Dealing with the punk vampire was another reason for his headache. Why did I have to find that ad in the Yellow Pages?
It took him several minutes, but he finally saw his target—a vacant place to sit and have a strong drink. He forced his way through the oversexed crowd of sweaty skin, strong perfume, and the tables with seated customers, advancing slowly to the bar on the far right side of the nightclub. He strode quickly toward his objective, an empty stool at the end of a long, curved bar. On the other side of the sleek wood counter, a man stopped restocking bottles of Vlad’s popular blood soda and stared in Dick’s direction.
Halfway on his trek to the bar, a woman slammed into him. Obviously drunk or high on something, he instinctively sensed she was human, not vampire. He pushed past her, cursing under his breath. What the hell was the world coming to? Vampires, zombies, and what would come next? Werewolves and the Easter Bunny?
Dick reaffirmed his reasons as to why he hated coming to Fang Shui. The dildos that worked there were no different than the types he dealt with when human. Nothing ever changes. Not even the predictable weather.
The first week of July in Florida brought the bitch heat of summer in full swing. Ninety degree days and seventies at night made for sticky situations when hunting for the zombies on the loose. Hurricane Chucky blustered through the Orlando area only a week ago. Eighty-five mile an hour winds along with spotty tornados ripped roofs off houses, damaged parts of the international airport, and the amusement parks suffered enough to keep them closed after seven days. Not that any of those problems affected him directly, but it did make for interesting news to take his mind off Noelle.
Buck Rogers’ Spaceship! Stop thinking of her.
Despite how he didn’t want to be at the meeting, safety at the bar was a welcome relief compared to the chaos he passed on the drive over. Traffic lights were still out at some of the secondary intersections, and people didn’t adhere to the rules of the road. Long lines at gas stations didn’t make sense, either, when the power didn’t work. Did all common sense get blown away with the storm? Was I that dense as a human?
Shaking his head as he grabbed the edge of the wooden barstool to stake claim to the valued real estate, he hauled himself up onto one of the last remaining seats. The place looked like the entire population of vampires and wannabe human groupies had decided to join in the rowdy behavior at the same time. A lot of residences had been damaged, as well as night haunts of the blood-kind. Hurricane Chucky wreaked havoc on the area in more ways than one. The scare of the zombies must be driving them here. What’s with the public display of sex? That’s a new one for this place.
Blooding and sex always seemed to go hand-in-hand in this new life he led, but Dick hadn’t seen such an overwhelming sense of laissez faire toward revealing what he considered a private matter. Was Vlad aware of this? Granted, he’d only been a vampire since last October. Halloween exactly, which was more like November first, but he’d seen a lot of action in those eight to nine months. Maybe this is a special event night at Fang Shui, like Karaoke Night. No, Stormin’ Chucky Sex Night!
He laughed to himself with the thought. With a wave of his hand, he caught the bartender’s attention. He’d frequented the vamp haunt four or five times in the last two months. Ted had been tending bar every time.
“What’ll it be tonight, Dick?” The young, hip-looking vampire bartender asked. The man wiped a towel along the varnished wood bar top waiting for an answer.
Why couldn’t I have looked like him as a human?
“VieSang, cherry.” The nasty stuff was his favorite among the flavors available. Since turning last Halloween, he’d supplemented his need for blood with the weird concoction. The blood-laced carbonated drink came in ten varieties, and he’d tried them all. Some he couldn’t get past his lips, let alone down his gut. The tart one had the most tolerable taste.
“For a change?”
The sarcastic tone wasn’t lost on Dick. “What can I say? I like popping cherries with my blood.” Not really, but better than nothing. As one of the many creations in Vlad’s business empire, the ten flavors of the nasty tasting drink acted as a change of pace for whole blood. Cherry at least was more palatable than the peppermint-flavored one he made at Christmas-time.

June Challenge ~ Spread the Contagious Kindness Cooties

Welcome to Romance Books 4 Us everyone. I'm your tour guide for the day, Nicole Morgan and as some of you may have noticed I drop by with a new post on the first of every month and either ramble like a fool or amaze you with my intellect. LOL. Okay, yes that last one was a stretch, but...I've got you smiling now, don't I? Now that you're good and loosened up, go ahead and kick your shoes off, sit back, relax and enjoy!

Lately I've been even more sparse in my postings than usual. I've had some things come up in my life both personally and professionally that have really thrown me for a loop and tossed a wrench into my schedule. I'm slowly getting things back on track and getting back into my writing, but during my time the ladies at RB4U and a few others as well not only offering me a shoulder to cry on, but sometimes an ear to vent to. Sometimes those gestures can mean more than the person offering it may realize.

And this brings me to my topic at hand for the day.  Kindness. Oh sure I know that I'm supposed to be putting up a post about writing or publishing or anything even loosely related to books, but this topic is important to me so just don't tell my other lovely co-authors at RB4U. Let's just keep this our little secret, okay?

*eyes you all suspiciously* Damn it! You're all going to rat me out aren't you? I'm kidding of course. But, let's face it there are some people out there in today's world who just aren't very nice. In fact you might even say some people are giant poopie butts! I know! The language I use, right?

But, I don't want to focus on the meanies of the world I want to focus on what we all can do together to make this world a better place. You heard me! I want this place to be happier than Disneyland when you're six years old. I want hugs and loves to be spread, not negativity. And the best part is being kind is the greatest gift you can offer someone that won't cost you a single cent. You can give it to friends, family or even a complete stranger. Kindness knows no limits and generates such happiness in others.

So, for the month of June...yes the entire month I am challenging everyone to spread joy and kindness to others. Whether it's a small as a smile or as grand as....well only you can decide that, but the important thing to remember is that kindness is contagious. It can infect even the grumpiest of bears.

Pass on the cooties and pay it forward!
