Meet Author Marianne Stephens...and April Ash!

Welcome to my writing world! I write both romance and nonfiction books. Fiction is easy to write since I can make the characters act the way I want...but, nonfiction is also easy since I have to stick to facts and not worry about creating a story from scratch! Both are easy; both are hard. I enjoy writing both!

Marianne Stephens writes sweet/sensual romance and nonfiction. April Ash has written two erotic romance books.

GIVEAWAY ALERT: One person who comments will receive a Romance Books '4' Us size XL tee-shirt! Be sure to write your email address in the text box with your comment.

BIO:
I started out as a reader of regencies/historical romance, moved on to contemporary, paranormal, and erotic. I wrote a book in 1994 when I knew nothing about the industry...except that I loved reading romance books. Rejections flowed and I realized I needed help. I joined RWA and Mid-America Romance Authors in 1994. It took years of writing to realize...thanks to multi-published, romance author, Carla Cassidy...that I was writing episodes, not stories that "flowed" from chapter to chapter. She told me this in 2006...and that's when I edited a book and sold it later that year.

Q: How did you celebrate publishing your first book?
A: My then-editor, Helen, lives in Australia. She emailed me offering a contract for Second Sight Dating...but it was around midnight my time. My husband was already asleep, but I woke him up to tell him the good news. I waited to call my kids/friends/relatives.

Q: What is the most important thing you do for your career now, as compared to when you first started writing?
A: Promo: all kinds. I wasn't good at getting my name "out there" and being in groups. Now I even give talks about being an author.

Q: Of all your characters, who’s your favorite, and why?
A: Katie in Gone to the Dogs by Marianne Stephens. I wrote this book in first person and loved being in her head the entire book.

Q: If you could change something about your first book, what would it be?
A: I'd add more pages to the ending. Second Sight Dating is about a psychic who runs a dating agency, and I'd love to add more detail to the last chapter.

Q: How do you choose names for your characters?
A: I like to use "everyday" names that people can relate to: Katie, Mike, Eileen, Jeff, etc. I think it makes readers feel more of a sense of intimacy with characters.

Q: Covers. Ever get one you wish you could change?
A: YES! Sexy Games by April Ash has a cover I'm not fond of. There's nothing in it I requested and the naked rear end on the cover is something I specifically asked not to have. Sometimes an author has no say in what the cover looks like.

Q: If you could give a younger version of yourself advice, what would it be?
A: Start writing sooner!

Q: Have you ever used an incident from your real life into one of your books?
A: Yes. In Street of Dreams, I have the hero and heroine experience the first East Coast Blackout in 1965. Been there; done that! Lived through it so I could have them face the same problems everyone did at that time. This is the "book of my heart".

Q: Any part of a book that drives you crazy as you write: beginning, middle, or end?
A: The middle drives me nuts, even though I know what has to happen.

Q: Out of your entire backlist, which book has the best opening line? What's the line?
A: Book: Gone to the Dogs. Best opening line: "Your dog ate your underwear". This actually happened (not my underwear but my daughter's), and that's what the vet said when I rushed the dog to the animal clinic. The dog was fine although I was very worried at the time. Later, I thought it would be a funny way to start a book and used that line as an opening hook.

Fun Stuff:
Q: What is your favorite holiday and why?
A: Christmas. I love to decorate and enjoy the warm feeling/greetings I get from others.

Q: What are two things people might be surprised to know about you?
A: I once slept on a college lab floor in a room with caged rats. My college roommate wanted to visit her boyfriend and I went with her. It was too late to find somewhere to sleep, so we went to the lab. They needed privacy, so I ended up alone in the room with the lab rats!

When I lived in Norfolk, VA, I dated a few sailors from the same aircraft carrier. Since they worked shift jobs, I sometimes had two dates in one day! Ah, my younger, wild days!

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: A teacher...and I did that. Taught Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. Also taught remedial reading and math.

Q: Favorite food.
A: Pizza with extra cheese.

Q: Favorite happy memory.
A: My wedding day two days after Christmas! And the arrival of all my kids and grandkids.

Q: Favorite drink.
A: Iced tea.

Q: Hot summer days or chilly winter nights?
A: Winter nights. Nothing better than snuggling up and getting cozy on a cold night.

Q: What is the top thing on your bucket list?
A: See a baseball game in every stadium. I've only been to 7 so far.

Q: If you could have a super power, what would it be?
A: I'd like to be immortal. I'd keep people "in line" and make them get along and behave!

CYNTHIA ARSUAGA INTERVIEW

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

My name is Cynthia Arsuaga, and I’m an erotic romance author and write many different genres. Yep, as if you didn’t know that already. I’ve been one of the 20 Gold Members on RB4U for several years and to the best of my knowledge, I’ve never given an interview. Bad Cynthia. So to start 2014 off, I’ll answer a few questions and tell a little about me. I’ll also give a synopsis and excerpt from my latest release, The Misadventures of Dick Grewcock. The story started out as a serial with novellas, but last year I decided to finish the serial and compile the “adventures” into one book. Dick released December 24th which was apropos considering the story begins on Christmas Eve. Perfect timing.

So sit back and enjoy today’s post.

Latest Book: The Misadventures of Dick Grewcock

Blurb:

Dick Grewcock is a computer geek wanting more out of life. Yearning for a girlfriend, he takes steps to make his dream come true. Vampires are handsome, powerful, and have women falling over them—everything he’s not. Becoming one wasn’t an easy task and he had to find a real vampire willing to turn him.

Christmas Eve, he begins an impossible mission for his boss. Before he starts, a cute spitfire woman just as geeky as him walks into Vampires ‘R Us and life changes. He could have everything he wanted—a pretty girlfriend and a great job—if he could just convince her.

Noelle St. Nicholas is on a mission to save her home and won’t take no for an answer. The only one who can help her is Dick, the nerd staring at her and looking really weird.

Excerpt:

“You’re correct, Mister Grewcock. May I call you Dick by the way? Mister Grewcock seems so formal when we are brothers of a kind. Don’t you agree?”
“Yeah, fine. You can call me Dick, but why am I required to call you Master Vlad?”
A slight, brief chuckle escaped the thin, red lacquered lips. “Out of respect since I am your sire. I sucked life into you, Dick.”
“Yeah, I guess, but the Master thing is weird and doesn’t seem fair.”
“Now, now, Dick, bear up. We’re still friends, right? If you are uncomfortable, call me Vlad or Andreaus. I’d even be okay with Andy. Sounds more modern. I can accept any of those salutations. Depends on my mood. Actually, I think Master Vlad still reflects the real me—more in control, dominant, a manly vampire’s name.” Vlad’s voice deepened the more he spoke.
“Oh whatever. I’ll call you Vlad.” Dick softly harrumphed and slumped in the chair. “My complaint. Can we discuss me now?”
“Yes, of course.” The Master rustled through a few pieces of paper. “Let’s see, the paperwork states you transitioned on Halloween night. Everything proceeded without a hitch.” He glanced up from the papers, then continued, “A glorious night All Hallows Eve. I love the holiday. A majority of humans assume the identities of creatures of the night. At least they think they are.” He chuckled, flicking his hands in the air a few times. “Such revelry and debauchery. Yes, I believe Halloween is my favorite time of the year.”
“Excuse me, but we’re a little off subject again. Can we talk about my problems, please?”
“Oh yes, sorry. I get carried away sometimes. Where was I? Oh yes, tell me what aspects of your new life are you having difficulties with, Dick.”
“How ‘bout I start with this?” Dick closed his eyes, tensed his body, opened his mouth, and fangs dropped down. They were over an inch in length, and he stretched his lips wide to accommodate the size. The tips barely punctured his lower lip, drawing a small amount of blood. “Ouch.”
“Oh my, what big teeth we have, grandma.”
“That’s not thunny. I canth talk wight. These dan teets get in the way. I sound like a horon. I has to oken eye outh so wide each tine, eye jaw hurts like health. I ite eye ottom lis erery tine.”
“Hmm, I understand, sort of.” Master Vlad waved his hand in the air and said, “I can have this little problem fixed in no time. Really, this is not a big deal. I’ll set you up with the corporate dentist, and he can repair the minor inconvenience you’re having.” He jotted something down on paper and returned attention back to Dick. “Why don’t you retract your teeth so I can understand you better? With the dental problem resolved, what else is bothering you, Dick?”
In a blur, the fangs retracted into his gums. He reached into a jacket pocket and pulled out the VRU pamphlet. “Okay, it says here, ‘becoming a vampire is an opportunity to develop into a better you in every way. You stop aging and gain enhanced looks.” He winked. “You become one of the Beautiful People.” Dick glanced up from the pamphlet and stared at his sire. “Hello? Look at me. What the hell are these red circles around my eyes? And what’s up with the pasty-white color over my entire body? I resemble one of those Kabuki actors on his last leg. I’m fairly certain no kimono or red lipstick will help.”
“Oh, Dick, don’t be silly. You’re a good-looking vampire, and you should try Blood Red by Maybelline. The long-lasting blend which lasts all night is what I find works best. Doesn’t smudge or rub off when you bite hard. I have the same shade on tonight.” He smacked his lips. “By the way, speaking of actors, can you sing and dance? If so, I got a memo today from one of my clients looking to hire at both Disney World and Universal Studios, a great opportunity.” He leaned over the wooden desk and lowered his voice. “You know when you work for either company, you get discounts. Oh, such fun. I’m a little kid all over again when I visit the parks. I especially enjoy the fireworks display during special events or the electric parade. Have you been to their night shows yet?”
Dick rolled his eyes. “Uh, no. Can we get back on subject here?”
“Oh sorry, I get excited about amusement parks. Okay, where were we? Oh yes, your pasty-colored skin. Are you feeding enough on whole blood, and not the synthetic shit blood pushers sell on the corner streets?”
“Yeah, I followed the protocol, exactly as you said in the manual and even have a couple bottles of the blood soda to supplement, but I still look like death warmed over. I’m not the virile, good-looking stud the literature promises. This guy here in the company’s pamphlet is handsome and built. Do I look anything resembling him? No!” Dick held up the brochure and pointed to a picture on the cover.
“Seriously, Dick? Xavier is a professional actor for all our promotional ads. Yes, he’s a vampire, but he was a top model before he turned. Of course, he’s going to remain the handsome, gorgeous man he was in human form. Considering your interest in being a lawyer, I’m surprised you didn’t read the small print. Dick, Dick, Dick, the first rule of contractual law—Read the small print.” Vlad’s voice raised an octave.
“What? You’re lecturing me. What is this caveat emptor lessons? False advertising, that’s what this is, and no amount of buyer beware posting flushes in my toilet. How many other suckers did you rip off? I should report you to the Better Business Bureau.”
“Suckers? Oh real funny. Good one.” The Master leaned back in his chair and held his stomach, laughing almost hysterically.

Now that you got to see my writing, now a little interview.

First, my official bio. Okay my picture is one of those Glamour Shots with a bit of airbrushing, but hey I indulged for hubby.

Cynthia resides in Orlando, Florida, the land of magic, surrounded by the treasured gems in her life, a caring, loving husband, dutiful and loyal daughter, and precious, delightful granddaughter. Oh and not to forget her mischievous Yorkshire Terrier, Thumper.

Cynthia was a “Navy Brat” calling a different port home every couple of years—from Southern California, to Boston, to Virginia, to Florida and many other places in-between. She developed wandering feet and diverse interests which she passionately incorporates those experiences into her stories, bringing characters to life, and eloquently sharing the vivid images of her mind with her audience.

Cynthia worked as a real estate broker for over twenty years before retiring to Florida. Several years ago, she turned to writing to stretch her creative muscles. Those ideas of faraway places and quirky characters lay dormant for years and finally demanded their stories be told. Currently she has three vampire series, Born Vampire, Forces of Beauty and a serial comedy named The Misadventures of Dick Grewcock. She’s also written a science fiction/fantasy, several contemporary romances, as well as a paranormal she co-authored with her husband, Mike. The Shifter Tales is a story of an unusual shape shifter who is a private investigator and leads a rather interesting life because he has the ability to shift into an eight pound Yorkshire terrier. That’s right, strange as it sounds, but it works quite remarkably. Rave reviews from professional review sites as well as readers have given the story glowing praise. Currently, Mike and Cynthia have adapted the first story into a screenplay for a feature film or possibly a television series and pitching to several production companies.

Cynthia plans on putting some mileage on those wandering feet and travel to exotic locations in the coming years. So look for the journeys to be expressed in Romantic Words by Cynthia in the future.

And that oh so necessary Author Interview:

How did you celebrate publishing your first book?

Went to dinner with husband.

How much of yourself is hidden in the characters in the book?

All of me with some embellishment.

Of all your characters, who’s your favorite, and why?

That’s hard because I love all my characters. I truly do. They’re like my children. How can you have a favorite when they are all special in their own ways?

If you could change something about your first book, what would it be?

I’d rewrite the majority of it. Really. I’ve come a long way in my writing since I wrote it. I’d polish it up for sure.

Do you eat comfort food/listen to music when writing?

Listen to music especially late night. Smooth Jazz all the way, nothing rock.

How do you choose names for your characters?

I collect names wherever I go. Best place is the shoe department of any store. They name the shoes. Strange, but true. Men’s too.

If you could give a younger version of yourself advice, what would it be?

Start writing sooner. Don’t wait until you’re 50+.

What genre would you like to try writing that you haven’t yet tried?

    Science Fiction.

Out of your entire backlist, which book has the best opening line? What's the line?

    A Vampire in Paris

The night of New Years’ Eve revelry consisted of walking along the promenade on the Thames River, watching fireworks and trolling for human prey.

How many stories are swirling around in your head? Do you keep a mental list, a computer file, or a spiral notebook filled with the ideas?

Too many, that’s for sure. I’ll have to live to 100 to write them. I keep a computer file and a notebook. A mental list too, but those ideas get lost a lot. If they stick around and begin to expand, I’ll write them down otherwise they are lost.

Fun Stuff:

What is your favorite holiday and why?

Valentine’s Day because husband and I celebrate as our first date.

What are two things people might be surprised to know about you?

One, I have a warped sense of humor and love slapstick. Two, I believe in reincarnation.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An astronaut, the first woman astronaut actually. I believed I came from the stars.

Favorite food.

Tough one because I love a number of things. A good steak?

Favorite happy memory.

Birth of daughter. I cried I was so happy.

Favorite drink.

   Barq’s Root Beer.

Hot summer days or chilly winter nights?

Hot summer days that’s why moved to Florida. Hate the cold.

What is the top thing on your bucket list?

   Cruise down the Nile River.

If you could have a super power, what would it be?

   Time travel.

SHORT AND SWEET

Sorry for this different post for today.

I’ve been sick for over two weeks now, and my mind is a bit fuzzy. And since I feel like death warmed over, highlighting my recent release about vampires and zombies seems appropriate. So, I’ll make it short and sweet and give you all a sneak peak of A Vampire’s Bite of Flesh, Episode 3 of The Misadventures of Dick Grewcock.

BLURB:

Dick Grewcock is a vampire working full-time as a computer consultant for Vampires ‘R Us. He had everything he wanted—a pretty girlfriend and a great job—or so he thought. A hurricane blows through town a week before the Fourth of July making a real mess, including riling the sugar craving mush-brain humans. Operation Zombie Takedown begins at Fang Shui, the local vampire bar, to get the infestation under control. Dick’s existence was about to change—again.
Noelle St. Nicholas is Dick’s girlfriend, but four months ago she met with an unfortunate accident and ended up in a cryopreservation chamber at a high security laboratory. She’s revived and Dick isn’t sure she’ll forgive him for what he did.
Dick battles zombies with fireworks exploding and learns what it means to be the vampire he was meant to be, but at what price to losing what’s left of his humanity?

EXCERPT:

Dick blinked a few times, adjusting his eyes to the brighter light and to gain his bearings. The stench of sweat and cigarette smoke filled his nostrils and every breath he took burned his lungs. God, he knew having the planning meeting here would be a mistake. Why not the VRU offices? At least they were private and smoke-free. But, no, that would have been too easy. Vlad insisted on checking out his latest acquisition, and as he put it, the bar was a good place to keep an eye on others in his coven. Killing two birds, yada, yada, yada.
Dancers scantily-clad in G-strings and sequined pasties climbed, turned and twisted on the brass poles bolted on the five mini-stages scattered around the room. Gyrating couples, males, females and others—Dick couldn’t tell what they were—writhed in a sea of limbs, music, and flashing multi-colored lights. He glanced around, disoriented from the pounding in his head. Where the heck was the bar? And where was his partner?
Urgh! A partner. Another vamp. A pain in the ass vamp cohort his sire insisted on him having until the zombie infestation was exterminated. Dealing with the punk vampire was another reason for his headache. Why did I have to find that ad in the Yellow Pages?
It took him several minutes, but he finally saw his target—a vacant place to sit and have a strong drink. He forced his way through the oversexed crowd of sweaty skin, strong perfume, and the tables with seated customers, advancing slowly to the bar on the far right side of the nightclub. He strode quickly toward his objective, an empty stool at the end of a long, curved bar. On the other side of the sleek wood counter, a man stopped restocking bottles of Vlad’s popular blood soda and stared in Dick’s direction.
Halfway on his trek to the bar, a woman slammed into him. Obviously drunk or high on something, he instinctively sensed she was human, not vampire. He pushed past her, cursing under his breath. What the hell was the world coming to? Vampires, zombies, and what would come next? Werewolves and the Easter Bunny?
Dick reaffirmed his reasons as to why he hated coming to Fang Shui. The dildos that worked there were no different than the types he dealt with when human. Nothing ever changes. Not even the predictable weather.
The first week of July in Florida brought the bitch heat of summer in full swing. Ninety degree days and seventies at night made for sticky situations when hunting for the zombies on the loose. Hurricane Chucky blustered through the Orlando area only a week ago. Eighty-five mile an hour winds along with spotty tornados ripped roofs off houses, damaged parts of the international airport, and the amusement parks suffered enough to keep them closed after seven days. Not that any of those problems affected him directly, but it did make for interesting news to take his mind off Noelle.
Buck Rogers’ Spaceship! Stop thinking of her.
Despite how he didn’t want to be at the meeting, safety at the bar was a welcome relief compared to the chaos he passed on the drive over. Traffic lights were still out at some of the secondary intersections, and people didn’t adhere to the rules of the road. Long lines at gas stations didn’t make sense, either, when the power didn’t work. Did all common sense get blown away with the storm? Was I that dense as a human?
Shaking his head as he grabbed the edge of the wooden barstool to stake claim to the valued real estate, he hauled himself up onto one of the last remaining seats. The place looked like the entire population of vampires and wannabe human groupies had decided to join in the rowdy behavior at the same time. A lot of residences had been damaged, as well as night haunts of the blood-kind. Hurricane Chucky wreaked havoc on the area in more ways than one. The scare of the zombies must be driving them here. What’s with the public display of sex? That’s a new one for this place.
Blooding and sex always seemed to go hand-in-hand in this new life he led, but Dick hadn’t seen such an overwhelming sense of laissez faire toward revealing what he considered a private matter. Was Vlad aware of this? Granted, he’d only been a vampire since last October. Halloween exactly, which was more like November first, but he’d seen a lot of action in those eight to nine months. Maybe this is a special event night at Fang Shui, like Karaoke Night. No, Stormin’ Chucky Sex Night!
He laughed to himself with the thought. With a wave of his hand, he caught the bartender’s attention. He’d frequented the vamp haunt four or five times in the last two months. Ted had been tending bar every time.
“What’ll it be tonight, Dick?” The young, hip-looking vampire bartender asked. The man wiped a towel along the varnished wood bar top waiting for an answer.
Why couldn’t I have looked like him as a human?
“VieSang, cherry.” The nasty stuff was his favorite among the flavors available. Since turning last Halloween, he’d supplemented his need for blood with the weird concoction. The blood-laced carbonated drink came in ten varieties, and he’d tried them all. Some he couldn’t get past his lips, let alone down his gut. The tart one had the most tolerable taste.
“For a change?”
The sarcastic tone wasn’t lost on Dick. “What can I say? I like popping cherries with my blood.” Not really, but better than nothing. As one of the many creations in Vlad’s business empire, the ten flavors of the nasty tasting drink acted as a change of pace for whole blood. Cherry at least was more palatable than the peppermint-flavored one he made at Christmas-time.
