I had fun writing this short story. The Character of Max was actually based on my husband. He's dark headed (or used to be) and worked hard for his family growing up. Giving all his money to his sister to help run the household. My husband's story differs in that he left to join the Navy and later on married me.

In my story, Max is grown, still lives at home and works hard, giving all his money to his mom to keep the farm and home running. After his father passed away, his mom had been managing things--badly.  Max finds out exactly how badly as the story progresses. He wonders if he'll have to stay forever and keep his family from losing the farm.

And what about his future?

He invaded her mouth, pursuing her. He placed his arms around her and pulled her against him, flattening her breasts against his chest. Desire spiraled through him.
She slowly pulled back and snuggled against his chest. “Wow. I always wondered what kissing you would be like.”
Rubbing her back, he noticed a little black bird in the tree limb above them. He whistled, and it cocked its head. He continued to mimic bird song, until the starling flew down and perched on his extended finger.
“How did you do that?” whispered Linda.
“It must be used to humans,” he lied. “Did you know starlings are better mimics then mocking birds?”
“No, I didn’t.” She smiled.
“What do you think of Linda?” he asked the bird. Forming what he wanted the starling to do in his mind.
It did a wolf whistle. Linda giggled.

Hello everyone! Happy December 1st! Now that there are only 25 days until Santa slithers down our chimney many of us are going through our Christmas traditions. Some old, and some new, there are many types of things that friends and family can do to share in the joys of the season. 

Here are just a few of my favorite things to do, especially on a chilly winter night when the flakes are falling and the streets are sparkly white....

1. Watch Christmas Vacation... I just love that movie! 
2. Drinking hot cocoa with extra tiny marshmallows... so yummy! 
3. Curl up with one of my favorite reads and a glass of Reisling. 
4. Drive around the city and look at Christmas lights with my daughters. 
5. Christmas shopping... not for the best deal or the latest fad, but for that one special gift that you know will make someone smile. 😃

No matter, apparently her family dynamic, or lack thereof, meant nothing to this sour man. She would bow out gracefully. He had enough on his hands at the moment.

“Ahem.” She cleared her throat in the hopes of stopping his grumbling. “I was sent by Doc Chase, not that you would care, but I’m just going to leave. I think you have bigger problems here than my…how did you put it?...cute little ass and doctor bag?” She shifted to her left, ready to head out of the barn. “When you find your horse, call Doc’s office, and they’ll find someone else to come out.”

He stared. She turned to walk away.

“Wait.”He ran after her, grabbing an upper arm. “What do you mean when I find my
horse?”

“Exactly what I said, Mr. Jackson. Your horse was not in the stall. I’m Miranda Chase, Doc’s daughter, and while I’d love to go back to wherever the hell it is I came from, which by the way is Montana, where I have my own practice, I can’t. And, right now I have more important things to do than stand here while you call me names. Good day, sir.” She curtsied, like a smartass, turned, and stepped away again.

Normally Miranda didn’t let men direct her or tell her what to do, yet when this man yelled, it stopped her in her tracks. When he’d grabbed her arm, she pretended not to have any reaction, but his hands had such a gentle roughness, she suddenly wanted them all over her body.

Now, hearing his stern voice “sexy, deep, and extremely Southern” she felt a quiver run straight to her core. Damn, she did not need another man distracting her. They all turned out to be no good. Maybe that’s why her daddy never acknowledged her as family? Maybe she was too much trouble for him, and he”d wished all along she had been a boy!

She turned toward the sexy voice of the tall, dark and dreamy cowboy, and for a second time, he walked right up into her personal space.

“I’m confused. We can talk about you and Doc and why you’re here later. Why isn’t my horse in his stall?”

“How the hell should I know?” Miranda shrugged. Did this guy have shit for brains? Total outer package, and yeah…she glanced lower…that part of the package appeared outstanding too, but nothing going on upstairs so far as she could tell.

“You were in my barn, what did you do to him? You’re coming with me.” Without giving her a chance to answer, he latched onto her upper arm, dragging her back to the barn.

“Let me go, you lunatic. I didn’t do anything with your horse. I came to do his physical, just like I was scheduled, and since your horse isn’t here, I’m moving on to my next appointment.” Her struggle was pointless; he was too strong to pull away from. She glared at him, but apparently intimidation wasn’t her thing, he continued without being affected.

“Oh no, not until we get to the bottom of this.”

“You’re a damned arrogant ass. Why is this my problem?”

“How do I know you didn’t do something with him?”

“Oh my God! And what, may I ask, would I do with a 2000-pound animal, hide him in my cute little doctor bag?”

Terry drove along Main Street on his way to The Cast Iron Skillet. He was tired and wanted nothing more but to kick off his boots, prop up his feet and open a cold beer. His mother had other plans for him, though, insisting that he drive into town to wish her childhood friend, Bea a happy birthday.

Just like the good son he always was, he hadn't been able to say no. His mother had laughed off his idea to show up later that weekend with belated birthday greetings and in the end, he knew it was always easier just to agree with her rather than even attempt at going a few rounds with his dear old mom. No matter how little she was, or how grown up he was, she would always be the victor in any argument.

Since it was a quarter past seven he was thankful to see most of the parking lot had begun to clear out. At least he wouldn’t have to make unnecessary small talk or shoot the breeze with any of the old timers who were constantly comparing him to his father. Granted his dad was a good man, but sometimes being the spitting image of Terrance Sr. left little room for his own identity in this quaint little town.

He pulled alongside the brick building and parked. The package his mom had sent ahead for Bea’s birthday was small enough that he was able to tuck it into his front shirt pocket as he walked around to the main doors.

From the minute he stepped inside his senses were hit with the delicious scent of chicken fried steak and all sorts of other goodies. His stomach growled in anticipation and he suddenly wasn’t very annoyed by his mother’s request.

Bea was her usual chatty self behind the lunch counter, going on about her new grandbaby and his first steps. He couldn't help but grin at her joy. It wasn't just in her smile but in her voice and eyes. She certainly was a proud grandmother if he ever saw one.

“Hi.”

A soft feminine voice called out and he turned to see where it was coming from. An attractive woman sat in the corner booth. Her hair was dark and long with a bit of curl at the ends. She was pretty. So pretty, in fact, he knew that she wasn't from around here. A face like that he was sure he would have remembered.

She smiled at him and looked almost embarrassed. It was then that he realized she had been talking t him.

“I’m sorry. Hello.” He tipped his hat toward her as he bowed his head. “How are you tonight?”

"Terry? Terry Reynolds, what on earth are you doing here?"

Bea’s loud, but excited voice interrupted his attention on the pretty brunette as she came over and nearly tackled him with a hug.

Once he regained his balance he laughed and offered her a hug. “Well you don’t think my mother would let one of your birthday’s go by without offering a proper gift, do you?”

He pulled the small box from his pocket and handed it to her. “I was told to deliver this to you with the message that she loves you.”

“Oh now, if your mother isn’t just the sweetest. Come now, sit.” Bea motioned for him to take one of the stools at the lunch counter. “Tell me, how’s she coming along out there in Florida? She and I have played phone tag a few times but we just can’t ever seem to catch up.”

"Well, you have her sister to thank for that. You remember what a social butterfly she was. She's got mom going out to dinner and all sorts of things. They're like a couple of teenagers." He laughed.

“Yes, well Ruthie always was young at heart. So, tell me how you’ve been. We don’t see you much in here anymore. Everything okay out on the ranch?”

“Oh yeah. Everything’s fine. Just working and doing my thing.”

“Mmm Hmm. I know you. You’d never leave that ranch if it wasn’t for your mom making you come to town, young man.”

“Now don’t you start on me.” He chuckled. “I’ve got a mom for that already.”

“You know she means well.”

“Yeah yeah.” He smirked and leaned in closer. “Listen, what do you know about that girl back there in the corner booth? Is she in town visiting a relative or something?”

Bea’s eyes lit up. “She is a pretty young thing, ain’t she?”

He shook his head and sighed. “Can you just answer the question, Mom?”

Laughing she patted his hand and whispered, “Oh alright. I’ll give you a break. Her name is Andie Donahue."
