Guest Blog: Nina Pierce and Memorable Characters #RB4U #Romance

Will You Remember Me?

Like so many authors, I read all the time. I have a book with me wherever I go whether it’s a doctor’s appointment or the vet’s office. Nothing passes time like hanging out with some good friends or at least … a hot hero or two. *g*

You see, it’s not the surprising twisting plot or the amazing world the author creates that keeps me turning the pages (though that is certainly important). It’s the people in the story and their journey that propels me from chapter to chapter. I’m all about the character driven stories. Of course I love to read romance. I make no bones about it. I enjoy all subgenres of romance from dark paranormals to action packed science fiction to cozy mysteries. But no matter where I find myself in time, contemporary or historical, I want to fall in love even as the hero and heroine are falling in love. I want to laugh and cry and ache for the characters as life throws one hardship after another at them.

I’ve loved many books, but there are some characters I’ve thought about long after I finished the book. Meggie, from the Thornbirds (Colleen McCullough), Ayla and Jondalar from the Earth’s Children series (Jean M. Auel), Zainal from the Freedoms series (Anne McCaffrey) and more recently, those sexy vampires from the Black Dagger Brotherhood (JR Ward), to name just a few. They just left a mark on me that I couldn’t seem to shake even after the author offered me their happy endings.

All writers want to create those kinds of characters. The ones that haunt your dreams and sneak up on you while you’re doing the dishes, random thoughts bumping over your synapses and making you smile or better yet … sigh. And I’m no exception.

My newest paranormal romantic suspense, UNCONTROLLED BURN is exclusively available as part of a fireman-themed boxed set, INTO THE FLAMES. It has a cast of vampires and humans that I hope will worm their way into your heart (and psyche) and keep you up late at night turning the pages.

Do you have any favorite characters that have stayed with you?

BLURB for INTO THE FLAMES:

Firefighters. The word ignites bold images of heroes in dust covered helmets and ash stained turnouts who defy the odds and press on in the presence of danger.

Men of Valor. A dedicated brotherhood of first responders whose honor, strength, and courage overcome obstacles to save lives.

Into The Flames. Seven NYT, USA Today, bestselling and award-winning authors offer romantic suspense, contemporary, historical, and paranormal tales of tough, iconic heroes who risk it all for their communities—but at the end of the day, seek the tender embrace of the women they love.

Firemen are HOT!

This week, my latest story, Where there’s Smoke, opened for pre-orders at most major e-tailers, as part of the boxed set, Into the Flames. With seven stories about smoking-hot firemen, by seven incredible authors, (well, six plus me.) it’s already climbing the lists at Amazon and All Romance e-Books.

Here's some Fun Facts about the 1920s and Where there's Smoke
  1. Where there’s Smoke was Cindy Spencer Pape’s first book set in the 1920s, but it won’t be the last!
  2. The town of Carstairs, Michigan, in Where there’s Smoke, is fictional, but it is based on numerous beach towns along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
  3. The Michigan side of the Lake Michigan coast has beautiful beaches and has long been a popular location of summer homes for Chicago’s wealthy.
  4. In the 1920’s only the major cities had paid fire departments. That’s why Eli, in Where there’s Smoke, is a volunteer fireman, rather than a professional.
  5. Not every girl in the 1920’s bobbed her hair. It was considered a little racy. Since Nettie is an old-fashioned girl in many ways, she’s chosen to keep hers long, which means she still wears it up every day.
  6. Nettie wasn’t an uncommon name for a young woman in 1926. I chose it because both my mother and my father, who lived in two different countries, each had an aunt named Nettie, (one short for Arnetta, one for Annetta) both of whom came of age in the 20s.
  7. During Prohibition it was quite common to have a doctor prescribe alcohol for medicinal purposes. An unethical physician and an unethical pharmacist in cahoots with a supplier, could easily keep the local drunks lubricated.
  8. Much of today’s firefighting equipment has its origins in the 20s. The pump and ladder truck was a new innovation, as were heavy leather helmets and the concept of chemical extinguishers. Fire hydrants weren’t around yet, except in the largest cities, so chemicals were used unless a large water supply was at hand.
  9. This was the first time since the Georgian era, where women can openly wear makeup. Lipstick and mascara and eyeliner headed the list. Max Factor and Elizabeth Arden were among the first major brands. Deodorant had been invented but wasn’t available in the stores yet, so ladies used scented dusting powder to absorb any “glow”.
  10. Big cities had newsstands where people picked up any newspaper that wasn’t delivered to their doorstep, particularly those from out of town. In smaller communities, the local bookstore often did double-duty. Eli chooses not to get his local paper delivered because it gives him an excuse to see Nettie every day.

Interview of Author Nina Pierce

Today I'm pleased to present an interview or romance author, Nina Pierce.

Latest Book: Reclaimed in Ecstasy
Buy Link:Amazon

BIO:
USA Today bestselling author, Nina Pierce, grew up in a house full of readers. So becoming enamored with books was only natural. She discovered romance stories in her early teens, falling hopelessly in love with knights in shining armor and the damsels who saved them. She now spends her days at the keyboard writing her own stories, blissfully creating chaos for her characters by throwing in a villain or two, a little murder and a whole lot of mayhem as they struggle toward their happy-ever-afters.

Nina resides in New England with her high school sweetheart and soul mate of thirty-something years and several very spoiled cats who consider her “staff”. When she’s not writing, she enjoys spending time with her three grown children, one love-sick son-in-law and a heart-melting grandson.

Q: How did you celebrate publishing your first book?
A: You mean after I cried my eyes out? I don’t remember exactly what Mr. Nina and I did that night, but I bought a special necklace with my first royalty check that I still wear.

Q: Your novel is being made into a TV series/movie. Who’s in your dream cast?
A: Oh, wow. Let’s see. If my current novella, RECLAIMED IN ECSTASY, were made into a movie it would have to be Christina Aguilera portraying Sara and Victor Webster as Derek … I wouldn’t mind if he flogged me!

Q: What’s your writing schedule like? Do you strive for a certain amount of words each day?
A: *sigh* Schedule? I’m supposed to have a schedule? LOL! Well, a typical day involves marketing in the morning: answering emails, shopping for ads and social media (and house management stuff). After lunch my muse is finally ready to settle down and I work until dinner writing or editing. I don’t have a word count goal, for some reason that gives my muse hives and she tends to throw her hands in the air and walk away. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I just plug away at my stories, even if they seem to be coming together rather sloooowly.

I used to worry I wasn’t getting my first draft down at the rate other authors seemed to manage. A: But then I realized, I can’t help but edit as I go and by the time I finish my “first draft”, it’s pretty much a finished product.

Q: Of all your characters, who’s your favorite, and why?
A: Rainmaker, the FBI agent in my romantic suspense novel, IN HIS EYES.  He’s not the hero of the story, but he definitely drives the plot. I just love his outlook on life and how he’s willing to sacrifice his career to bring down a serial killer no one in the FBI believes exists. Plus, he’s a wise-@$$ and a cynic and writing his scenes was just so much darn fun.

Q: If you could change something about your first book, what would it be?
A: *pulls notebook out from under couch and blows off dust* The first book I ever wrote remains buried, probably never to see the light of day. The writing is just, well … rough. I’m not sure I could ever save it from itself. But I love the idea of the story and the characters. If I could change anything about it, I’d love to find the nugget of a story in the meandering plot that goes nowhere and create a romance novel readers would love to read. But yeeeeeah, it’s so not going to happen. *tucks notebook away*

Q: Do you eat comfort food/listen to music when writing?
A: I’m one of the few people I know who requires complete silence when I’m writing. Music … any music, completely screws with my wiring. I can’t think if music is playing because I tend to sing along. I can ignore a television if Mr. Nina is watching sports, but not if he has on a documentary or movie.

Q: And comfort food? Nope. But I always have a drink on my writing desk. Coffee in the morning. A: Water (cold or hot depending on the season) in the afternoon. And wine in the evening.

Q: How do you choose names for your characters?
A: Names are VERY important to me. Once I have a little nugget of an idea I go to a couple of favorite websites and come up with names. I can’t write a word until I know my hero and heroine’s (and very often the villain) names. From their names I get a picture of who they are and then I actually go out and find a picture of them. This is always my first step in discovering who they are. It’s weird, but I’m such a visual person. I actually figure out their personalities just from their names and photo.

Q: Covers. Ever get one you wish you could change?
A: Oh goodness, yes! Several of them. One of my publishers went through what I call their “lazy period” where they just seemed to throw couples on the covers of my novels. But the worst was when they chose a very handsome African American model for my cover, but my hero was very much Caucasian. Surprisingly … that story never sold well. LOL! (I’m happy to say I got the rights back and re-released it with a cover that better depicted the characters and the story.)

Q: Out of your entire backlist, which book has the best opening line? What's the line?
A: My sci-fi erotic romance, A TOUCH OF LILLY.

Lilly D’Angelo wasn’t expecting a trip down memory lane when she sauntered into the dingy tavern, but the acrid stench and gruff hum of the Friday night crowd carried her back to one of the seedier establishments on Chicago’s south side nonetheless.

Q: How many stories are swirling around in your head? Do you keep a mental list, a computer file, or a spiral notebook filled with the ideas?
A: Wow, I’ve really got too many to count. Several of them are continuations of stories I thought would stand-alone, but when I finished the novel, I loved the characters or settings too much to just leave them. I’ve got files on my computer of stories I’ve started. I’ve also got a file labelled “What if”, where I jot down ideas for stories or great lines and in a couple of cases, some awesome titles that have no stories yet. LOL!

Fun Stuff:
Q: What is your favorite holiday and why?
A: Thanksgiving. All the family, food and wine … none of the pressure of worrying about gifts!

Q: What are two things people might be surprised to know about you?
A: That I’m a thrill-seeker … I’ve been parasailing, hot air ballooning, skydiving and done white water rapids in an inner tube! Still on my bucket list—whitewater rafting the Colorado River!

I’m also a math and science geek … yep, I was the one who always ruined the bell curve in college.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: Barbra Streisand – loved her music, loved her singing. There was just on teeny tiny problem … I can’t carry a tune in a bucket!

Q: Favorite food.
A: Any meal I don’t have to cook or clean up after! LOL!

Q: Favorite happy memory.
A: Wow! Just one? I think my wedding day because it was so much flipping fun! And let’s face it, most of my other happy memories happened because of that day!

Q: Favorite drink.
A: Frozen Margarita.

Q: Hot summer days or chilly winter nights?
A: Summer days … though that heat is a killer on my MS. Still, I LOVE the warm weather and long days!

Q: What is the top thing on your bucket list?
A: It’s a tossup between a cruise in Alaska and an African safari.

Q: If you could have a super power, what would it be and what would you be called?
A: Cyclona! I would be able to clean through my house in 5 minutes flat including laundry, dishes (ick), vacuuming and dusting (quadruple ick!). And I’d morph into a body that could wear a bikini while I did it all! That would leave me plenty of time to write and hang out with my family and friends.

BLURB:
A woman unwilling to trust …
Sara Lancaster isn’t sure accepting her invitation to a BDSM weekend at XTC Resort is a good idea—though she does have something to prove. Months of abuse at the hand of her former Master have taken their toll. Now, two years later, Sara believes she’s ready to embrace her submissive side once again and enjoy the carnal pleasures of a younger Dom.

A man testing his limits …
Derek Thomas has lost belief in his abilities as a Master. Accepting an invitation for Dom training could be exactly what he needs to regain his self-confidence. Challenged with an experienced older woman, he soon realizes wielding a flogger isn’t always enough to break down the emotional walls and heal a damaged submissive.

Two people with something to prove …
Sara and Derek sizzle with sexual heat the moment they step into the dungeon. The mind blowing sex and physical pain may satisfy their bodies, but wounded souls and broken spirits just may require something even more intimate—their hearts.

EXCERPT:
Ethan had said the Doms this weekend would be green, but the stiff way Derek moved through the club and down the stairs made Sara wonder if he had any idea what he’d just agreed to. The man had mentioned a dungeon, but the nervous energy buffeting her led Sara to believe that perhaps the man beside her had never dominated a submissive on his own.

Testing her theory, she boldly looked directly at his silhouette. “Master Ethan said we should use his private room down there on the left.” She pointed and moved a half step ahead of him. She hadn’t baited a Dom in a long while and she was feeling just foolhardy enough to test this kid’s mettle. The boyish face and youthful curls brushing his collar marked him as some college kid probably experimenting.

The man’s heavy boots pounded along the tile floor of the lower hall, the steady cadence never changing. “You’re well trained, Sara. You know better than to look at me that way. And I’m sure as hell not going to put up with you trying to top me.”

"Top you?”

He stopped abruptly, and Sara forced herself to take three more steps before casually turning and offering him a lackadaisical arch of her brow. Despite how hard she pushed, the man held tight to his control. His eyes narrowed, raking over her face with disapproval. Biceps bulged as he crossed his arms over his chest, waiting for her to acquiesce.

Great, a pissing match.

She’d see what kind of stuff he was made of and make this man prove his worth. Squaring her shoulders, Sara met the annoyance sparking in his eyes, mutely challenging the obedience he demanded.

“I’m not sure what you thought you understood from my conversation with Master Ethan.” The power of his deep, even tone shivered down her spine as he closed the distance between them. “But understand this now—for the next hour or two, I am your Master. You will obey me. You will treat me with the respect I deserve or you will be punished.” His full mouth twisted in an arrogant smile that sent butterflies fluttering in her tummy. “Which means you’ll turn those beautiful blue eyes to the floor. And unless I ask you a direct question or you’re screaming your safe word, you will keep those pouty lips of yours sealed shut.” He leaned in close, her strangled pants mingling with his heated breath. “Have I made myself clear, Sara?”

The rational part of her brain screamed to obey, but it was the sarcastic hellion begging for attention who currently had control. Ignoring both logic and the heavy pounding of her heart, Sara lifted her chin in defiance. “Perfectly.”

“You want to play it that way? Fine. Game on.” Grabbing Sara by the elbow, He pulled her to a stop in front of Ethan’s private dungeon and looked up into the camera monitoring the hall. His determined expression curled heatedly in her gut.

“Do you enter this room of your own free will as my submissive?”

“Yes.”

“Do you understand this room is monitored by cameras to protect both of us? And that the use of a safe word will halt all play immediately without repercussions or questions?”

“Yes.”

“And what is your safe word, Sara?”

“Attila the Hun.”

The smile he flashed held no mirth. “That’s a mindset, not a safe word.”

“Yours or mine?”

He leaned close, overwhelming her senses with the spicy scent of him. “Keep it up, Sara,” he whispered, his breath feathering heat across her cheek. “Punishing you for your defiance will be entirely my pleasure.”

BFF ... Forever and Ever?

Most of us had at least one BFF … best friend forever. Judy is mine. We were neighbors when I was just a little sprig of a thing and we did everything together, even our toothless first day of kindergarten. She was always there. And even when I moved an hour away in second grade, we continued to stay overnight at each other’s houses now and again. We wrote letters and sent little gifts through the mail even through high school. We lost touch in college and into our young adult lives, but thanks to the modern world of social media, we’ve actually reconnected.

I still have fond memories of all the secrets we confided and the laughs we shared. If I saw her in person tomorrow I have no doubt we could sit down at Starbucks and talk for hours about everything that’s gone on in our lives. The friends I made in college *mumble grumble* years ago would be the same. They’ve all taken a fraction of my heart with them and reuniting is like having a piece of me come home again. Warm and comfortable.

So it’s no wonder one of my favorite relationships in a romance is the friend to lover. I especially enjoy the relationships where they have no idea how much their hearts have intertwined until that one moment their eyes meet and BOOM! the fireworks explode.

My erotic romance, MAID FOR MASTER, a BDSM novella is based on this premise. Only in this case one of them is already hopelessly in love …

BLURB:
When lust and deception collide, will her complete submission be enough to bind their hearts?

Treat herself to a carnal weekend at the hedonistic retreat, XTC Resorts? That’s not something Claire Calderwood, a three-time loser in the relationship department would ordinarily do. But at forty-one, having a successful cleaning business is no longer enough. She wants a chance to let go of all responsibility, submit to a stranger’s sexual demands and satisfy her darkest fantasies.

Jonathon Brierton has known his best friend’s sister long enough to recognize her submissive nature. He would like nothing more than to have Claire bound naked and at the mercy of his flogger as he teaches her the sensual art of obeying her Master. At thirty-something, he’s a successful real estate developer, owner of a BDSM resort—and hopelessly in love with the older woman.

When Claire follows him to his resort, Jonathon is certain he can keep his identity secret long enough to convince her that being restrained in his stocks is something that will satisfy them both. But lies, deceit and broken hearts may not be so easy to overcome.

EXCERPT:
Jon pulled his gaze from Claire. There was no sense torturing himself. It would be a half-hour or more before the Doms and subs in the open arena below would finish playing out their scenes. Their interactions were intense, and he had no doubt the private rooms one floor below would be filled with eager players following the show. He intended to be in one of them with Claire. He had the room already reserved and set up for her. Until then, he needed to bide his time. “And there is the small detail of her not knowing exactly who I am,” Jon added quietly.

Ethan stared at him, the questions etched in the deep V between his manicured brows. “I’m pretty sure she mentioned you were on vacation together.”

Jon lifted his glass of tonic water, the ice long melted. “Correction, she booked a vacation to Paradise Cove with her fiancé.” He gulped the last of the tepid drink but couldn’t dislodge the lump of guilt clogging his throat. “The man conveniently broke off the engagement at the last minute and cancelled his trip. I slipped in, managed to convince her to keep her plans and allow me to tag along.” He set the glass down. “But Claire believes she’s here with Jonathon Brierton. She knows nothing of Master Xavier.”

Ethan fell back in his chair, his baritone laughter rolling in rhythm with the pounding beat of the background music. “That would explain the whole ‘pretend the boss isn’t here’ charade you’re trying to pull off this weekend.”

Their easy friendship relaxed the knot in Jon’s shoulders. “It didn’t occur to you I might actually just want a vacation?”

“At one of your own fetish resorts? Hardly.” Ethan scoffed.

A submissive on staff delivered beverages to their table and knelt obediently on the floor beside Ethan. Naked, save for the black leather circling her neck, wrist and ankles, and the silver-and-gem-studded chains hanging stylishly from her nipple and clitoral clips, the woman was a breathtaking vision in her docility. Normally the sight would have piqued the Dom clamoring inside Jonathon, but tonight there was only one submissive he ached to dominate.

When What You Thought ... Isn't

So a few years ago Mr. Nina and I left our home state of Maine and bumped from Rhode Island to Vermont and home again. This meant while we lived in other states we had to find product replacements for everything we were used to finding at the grocery store. I walked up and down the aisles of new stores looking for some of the “standards” I kept in my cupboards. One of those basics was carbonated soda water. Not quite tonic, but similar. I drink it all day instead of tap water. In Maine, we bought the store brand. Well, obviously I wasn’t going to find that in Rhode Island or Vermont, so we found something that looked like it would fit the bill. Same description, reasonably priced and 0 calories. Perfect.

Yeah, well, I poured my first tall glass and took a long swallow … and promptly spit it out. It was like drinking Kool-Aid with bubbles. GAH! A mouth full of sugar. When I looked at the ingredients I discovered it contained aspartame. Blech! I don’t like aspartame. I find it overly sweet. I ended up dumping 3 bottles of the stuff because I just couldn’t drink it. I was so bummed. I really felt that the product should have been more clearly labeled.

What’s this got to with reading books? A lot actually.

A while back I bought a book that sounded very intriguing. The title was about Vikings. The cover showed a Viking. The back cover blurb talked about Vikings, ships and characters from different worlds falling in love. Yay! I was going to read a romantic historical Viking story. I settled in and within the first chapter was introduced to a “space bridge”. Wai … what? The “ship” turned out to be a space ship. The “other world” turned out to be outer space. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE science fiction stories. I read them all the time. Heck, my latest book is a sexy sci fi romance—but I don’t lead the reader to believe they are picking up a light-hearted romantic comedy. The cover of A TOUCH OF LILLY shows a moon, a very bright star and two guys, one of them with red skin … red skin. There is nothing that could lead a buyer to think they were picking up anything but a story set in, if not space, at least a futuristic world of some type. Even if you never read the back cover blurb, you’re not going to think you’ve picked up a steampunk novel or an historical.

I felt totally cheated. The thing is, it might have been a good book. I might even have enjoyed it, but I didn’t get past the second chapter before I set the book aside in disgust. It’s not what I plunked my money down for. I was looking for an historical romance and what I got instead was an eclectic mix of sci fi and historical which is a totally unique story and a great story idea by this author, but not so much for the unsuspecting reader.

So how do you see it? Am I way off-base on this? Have you ever picked up a book you felt fell in one genre and actually turned out to be another? Did you feel like you got the old bait and switch? I’m just wondering if I’m feeling a little overly sensitive about this.

My latest release is a sexy sci fi suspense. It's ON SALE for $.99. I hope you check it out.

Blurb:
Ex-Chicago detective LILLY D’ANGELO has a secret she doesn’t share with anyone. A master of the one night stand, she’s given up ever finding a soul mate and thrown herself head first into her career. That is, until she captures the wrong alien. Kidnapped and sold into the sex slave trade, she’s shipped into deep space. Barely escaping with her life, Lilly now travels the galaxy working as a bounty hunter using her secret talents to bring down criminals and seeking revenge on the one male who ruined her life.

Agent DALLAS SAWYER works for deep space’s version of the FBI. After a disastrous mission that left several of his team members murdered, a president executed, and Dallas near death, he’s determined to take down the assassin targeting government officials. When a sexy human female gets between him and his goal, Dallas and his alien partner find themselves on the receiving end of a passionate night they won’t soon forget and a proposition that may very well blow up in their faces.

Because in deep space … true love can happen with just a touch.

Excerpt:
Dallas threaded his way through the crowded sidewalk back to the alley. He’d learned over the past month the residents of this territory on Garalon Five were night owls. Not that they had a choice. Things wouldn’t slow down until the first two moons were well below the horizon and the third just beginning to rise. The lack of daylight had thrown him when he’d first arrived. Though the Nebulae Galaxy--a term that grated as it was technically a solar system--had a major star at its center, the weak light didn’t reach a good portion of the planets. Heat on the inhabitable planets came from deep within their crusts.

He didn't give a shit about the specifics, just that the interminable darkness was fraying the ends of his taut nerves. Another two days, a week tops, and this mission would be finished and Dallas could return to Earth for a much needed vacation with some human companionship.

Working for the government was a lonely business. Lonelier still when he was out in deep space away from his own species. Five years ago, when Dallas had graduated from Quantico, he'd envisioned this life, traveling the stars in search of bad guys and adventures. But working for QAL wasn't all the pamphlets had promised. It seemed even in space, shit happened, people died and no matter how far he ran, he couldn't outrun a broken heart.
