BIO:
Lily Harlem lives in the UK and is an award-winning, best-selling author of contemporary erotic romance. She writes for publishers on both sides of the Atlantic including Ellora's Cave, HarperCollins, Totally Bound, Xcite and Sweetmeats Press. She also self-publishes novels that range from emotionally charged erotic romance, to steamy ménage a trois and, with Natalie Dae, (Harlem Dae) writes dark BDSM that pushes all the boundaries.
One thing you can be sure of, whatever book you pick up by Ms Harlem, is it will be wildly romantic and down-and-dirty sexy so make sure you hang on tight for the ride!
Q: How did you celebrate publishing your first book?
A: It was actually on my birthday so I was already planning a party. The barbecue was lit, the wine was chilling and all my friends came round in their best frocks.
Q: Your novel is being made into a TV series/movie. Who’s in your dream cast?
A: Oh, great question! Dark Warrior is one of my Male/Male erotic romances (I also write Male/Female) and I’d need a handsome blond actor to play Dr Leo Rotherham, maybe Ryan Kwanten or similar, and a tall, dark studly guy like Jamie Foxx to play Kenyan warrior Malik.
Q: What’s your writing schedule like? Do you strive for a certain amount of words each day?
A: I wake up ready to write and often sit sipping tea and eating toast for an hour or so and pen my first words of the day. Then I go for a run, walk the dogs, do some chores. After that I settle for the afternoon and write more. I don’t have a set word count to do each day, it’s more a case of getting the stuff in my head down on paper so I can relax with Mr Harlem in the evening.
Q: What is the most important thing you do for your career now, as compared to when you first started writing?
A: I self-publish some of my work. I used to only want to see my stories with a publishing house, but now I’m confident enough to go it alone on some projects and luckily these books always do well. I’d never solely self-publish, I enjoy the relationship I have with my publishers too much and also the ‘shop window’ they provide, but there is something very rewarding about being responsible for a novel every step of the way and making all the decisions.
Q: How much of yourself is hidden in the characters in the book?
A: In Dark Warrior the leading characters is a doctor. Before I started writing I worked as a nurse, so I guess a lot of his medical dialogue and thoughts are straight from my own memories and knowledge.
Q: Of all your characters, who’s your favorite, and why?
A: I adore Kane Ward from In Expert Hands. He’s a gorgeous billionaire looking for the perfect female submissive and his cool, calm demeanor just heats me up, then when he loses control, at that exquisite moment of climax… Mmm yes, Kane Ward is a favorite. (His brother, Taylor Ward is just as yummy and has his own story in Sexy Just Got Rich.
Q: Do you eat comfort food/listen to music when writing?
A: I have to have silence when I write, music changes the mood in my head, if I’m listening to something happy when writing a scene of angst it would come out all wrong! As for eating, I tend to snack on dried fruit, the trouble is if I eat when I’m writing I barely taste the food, my concentration is on the screen. It would be a waste of chocolate!
Q: Give one advice tip to an aspiring author.
A: I can do better than that, I have a page on my website for new writers http://www.lilyharlem.com/tips-for-new-authors.html.
Q: What genre would you like to try writing that you haven’t yet tried?
A: I’m still fairly new to paranormal, it took me a long time to dip my toe into the vampire and werewolf pond but I bit the bullet last year and wrote Bite Mark and Claw Mark. I think I’d maybe like to have a go at historical one day, but the thought of getting it all wrong gives me shivers!
Q: Out of your entire backlist, which book has the best opening line? What's the line?
A: Probably the first line of Breathe You In, my new What’s Her Secret novel. It sounds so sweet and romantic but very soon, within a few paragraphs, the moment is turned on its head and all is not as it seems.
First line:
Kisses as soft as kitten’s whiskers trickled down my back, fluttering, floating, spreading into the dip of my spine and onto the rise of my buttocks.
Fun Stuff:
Q: What is your favorite holiday and why?
A: Greece! I LOVE Greece. I went on a sailing holiday there a few years ago and had the time of my life. I’ve set a new story there, Toy Boy, which is out in May. The colors and the food and the sunshine is all beyond perfect.
Q: What are two things people might be surprised to know about you?
A: I’m pretty good at karate. I also hate marzipan with a passion.
Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: A nurse, and I achieved that. It was a wonderful, rich experience and I met amazing people who I will never forget.
Q: Favorite food.
A: Sushi, can’t resist it!
Q: Favorite happy memory.
A: Seeing my husband for the first time and thinking what a handsome guy he was. Little did I know he’d be mine one day!
Q: Favorite drink.
A: White wine, cool and crisp on a sunny day and served in a long stemmed glass. I like the rim of the glass to be delicate and slim – fussy aren’t I!
Q: Hot summer days or chilly winter nights?
A: Summer, every time. I love my summer wardrobe and having the doors and windows flung open to the garden. We live in the countryside and the sounds of the birds and the smell of the flowers is wonderful.
Q: What is the top thing on your bucket list?
A: I want to go to Africa and immerse myself in the setting of Dark Warrior. Get up close and person with the plains and the animals and experience the wild. I’m a bit scared, to be honest, but I’ll give it a go if Mr H comes with me!
Q: If you could have a super power, what would it be?
A: To control time.

BLURB:
While some passions live on the surface, others—wilder, darker passions—have to be kept buried deep.
Dr. Leo Rotherham is following his calling by working in rural Kenya for the charity Medics On Hand. While he expected a primitive way of life and limited medical supplies, what he doesn't bargain on is falling for handsome village warrior, Malik.
Malik is well respected, knowledgeable and loyal to his tribe. He's also beautiful, brave, modern and, much to Leo's dismay, married. Isn't he?
No, it turns out Malik is as free as the animals that roam the African plains at night.
Soon the tension is building between the two men and Leo isn't sure if he's coming or going. Whenever he's around Malik he can't help but notice the reflected look of lust in his eyes and feel the longing sizzling between them.
Malik stands too close, not close enough. Forbidden attraction simmers between them and the need grows to dizzying heights. But dare they admit to each other what it is they want? And are they brave enough to act on their desires and be honest about their lust? One thing is for sure, a passion this big, this powerful can't be contained and it's all going to explode in the most spectacular of ways.
EXCERPT: Adult Language Warning
“Like this.” Malik placed his hands on Leo’s shoulders and turned him to face the whitewashed wall. “More.” He gripped Leo’s wrists and spread his arms high and wide. “You have another sting beneath your arm. I need to cool your whole back.”
There was something about the dominant way Malik handled him, maneuvered him, that had Leo’s heart beating fast for another reason. He pressed his cheek against the cool wall and willed his cock not to fill. “How…how many stings are there?”
“About six,” Malik said, turning on the tap. “I think.”
Leo shut his eyes and stayed still, sacrificial like. He pressed his groin to the bricks and hoped he wouldn’t go to full hardness.
“Keep very still,” Malik whispered close to his ear. “This will be cold but it will help.”
“Ahh…” Leo gasped, gritting his teeth.
Malik had placed a large, cold wet towel over the length of his back.
As the chill spread over the painful bites, numbing them, Leo let out a sigh.
“Better?” Malik asked, his voice hushed and soothing.
“Yes. Thank you. Thank you very much.”
Malik’s hands were on his back, rubbing and smoothing the towel, as though helping it spread its coldness. His touch was firm yet gentle. Leo could feel each one of his strong fingers gliding over his body, from his waist to his armpits, the length of his spine and the base of his neck that was oh so sensitive to caresses.
He bit his bottom lip. Blood was rushing to his groin now. Any chance of not getting hard had gone.
“How is it feeling?” Malik asked.
“Better, but…” Leo squirmed as a nipping sensation caught on his left arse cheek.
“What? What is it?”
I think the little bastard got me on the buttock, too.”
“Let me see.”
“Well, no I…”
Leo gasped then froze as Malik’s hands slid around his waist and sought the button on his shorts. He could hear the other man breathing, long, slow inhalations right by his ear and exhalations that drifted down his neck.
Malik’s nimble fingers made short work of Leo’s shorts.
Leo prayed he wouldn’t skim his knuckles over his cock and discover his mounting arousal. It was shocking to be so infused with lust when he was being treated for hornet stings but he couldn’t help it. Flattened to the wall with Malik tending him was just too much of a wet dream, and now, now his shorts had gathered around his ankles. Thank goodness he’d worn boxers—at least he still had some barrier, though not much.
“This side?” Malik asked, pulling the waistband of Leo’s boxers so he could see down and examine his buttocks.
Leo clenched his bum cheeks. He screwed his eyes tighter, his cock throbbed, his arse stung. “Yes,” he said quietly. “That one.”
“Mmm, I can see it. Nasty.” Malik tugged the towel so that a wet corner landed over the lowest sting, instantly taking the heat away.
Leo’s heart was trip-trapping. He curled his hands into fists and locked his knees. Malik stood close, so close, crowding him yet calming him with his gentle movements.
I will wet this again,” Malik removed the towel.
“Okay. Thank you,” Leo said, surrendering to his treatment. He concentrated on the pulse in his cock. It was thudding, trapped between his belly and the brickwork.
Malik was back, so was the towel. This time it covered a large section of his arse. Again, Malik smoothed it over his skin. Finally, each sting was reducing in heat and becoming more bearable.
Leo held his breath.
Malik skimmed his hand over Leo’s buttocks, pressing the towel along the crack of his cheeks. It was almost like he was exploring Leo’s shape and contours. Familiarizing himself with the curve of his body and the lower dips of his back.
As he moved his attention up to his shoulders again, Leo let out a breath. Desire tugged at his belly, arousal seared through his veins. He’d happily bend over and be fucked senseless right now but he knew that wasn’t going to happen. It couldn’t. Malik wasn’t gay, and Leo wasn’t about to admit to being gay.

Guest Blog: Lily Harlem: Writing M/M and Menage Romances
Hi, thanks for inviting me to Romance Books 4 Us, it’s great to be here. This last few years I’ve been reading and writing within various erotic romance sub-genres. Some I never thought I’d go near, others that have tempted me but I just never got round to it. Anyways, it’s been fun!
One of the biggest changes in my reading and writing material has been male/male erotic romance. I started off reading some really great man love books and then decided to have a go at writing a few myself. I suppose my first dally was with The Glass Knot which is about a married gay couple who allow a woman into their relationship. There were definite differences with the sex scenes (obviously) but I found that the love and respect and romance between the two men was no different to writing about a man and a woman, which of course it isn’t, it was just the first time I’d put pen to paper (or rather fingers to keyboard) about that subject. Also I kind of used a safety net, or rather my comfort zone, as The Glass Knot is ménage a trois my absolute favourite type of novel to write. I adore the dynamics and the complications that can arise between the characters. Also the situations and complexities that are born make for great conflict and resolution and three in a bed – wow, what’s not to love about that?

My first true male/male novel is High-Sticked, the 5th book in my Hot Ice Series. These books are all standalone reads which made it perfect for one of my players to skate out of the closet and into the arms of a male lover. I really enjoyed writing Todd and Matthews story, set in New York City (I’d just visited from the UK so it was fresh in my mind). It follows the struggle of a professional gay athlete and the nation’s media frenzy around his love life. It’s had great reviews and certainly will heat up any ereader. Gay athletes, particularly in the NHL seems to be something that always has an undercurrent of interest bubbling away when I look at the US media so it was/is pretty topical too.
I’ve since written more male/male, buoyed on by the positive reactions of readers and reviewers. Who Dares Wins is a short military ménage a trois which is riding high in the Amazon charts and I have Dark Warrior and Caught on Camera coming out early 2015 with Totally Bound – watch out for them! Dark Warrior is also something new within itself, this is a mixed race relationship, and the two men couldn’t be more different. One is an English doctor doing charity work in Africa and the other a Kenyan tribal warrior! I loved writing it, so much fun and a great setting on the vast, wild plains beneath Mount Kilimanjaro.
BDSM, or rather, more risky, harder BDSM, is also something I’ve dabbled with along with my co-author Natalie Dae – we write under the name Harlem Dae. Writing together we felt able to push boundaries, explore edgier sexual acts and create characters that were really out of the box. The Sexy as Hell Trilogy has been a great success for us and we certainly found our own limitations and learned a lot from and about each other. You can read more about my experiences with co-authoring here. Sexy as Hell isn’t for the faint of heart but if you like dark romance and eye-wateringly hot sex than it’s well worth checking out the box set which comes with three bonus spin-off stories about the secondary characters. That was new too, writing about secondary characters. We found that with the trilogy being the length that it is, these characters had unanswered questions about their lives. We’d got to know them, as will a reader, and they needed their own resolution. So far so good and they seem very popular as a wind down after the intensity of Victor and Zara’s story.
Paranormal isn’t something I’d tried before either. I’d seen shows, True Blood and watched Twilight, and decided to just go for it. Bite Mark will be out soon at Ellora’s Cave and has a sequel Claw Mark. It’s vampires and shifters and is adrenaline-infused and exciting. The plot swirled around in my head and I really got my teeth into it – excuse the pun – I can’t wait for it to hit the shelves. Bite Mark is set in London, it’s creepy, foggy and based around Smithfield Meat Market an area I know well from my younger years. I don’t think that’s something that will ever change, using places I’ve spent time in as locations for my novels, even it it’s just a springboard for the rest of the story.
So what’s next? It’s hard to know and I never say never. Sci-fi? Mmm, that’s not my thing to watch or read but maybe. Dystopian fantasy, steam punk? Again, maybe one day a fantastical plot will jump out at me. I’ve just written a short Viking story, that was fun and I enjoyed the research, also one about some bad ass bikers. I’m not sure what’s on the table next, or rather in my head, I guess that’s the beauty of being a writer – you just have to wait and see where your imagination takes you, but one thing is for sure, it will be romantic, fun, steamy and everyone will have a great time – in the end!
Lily Harlem’s latest release is The Silk Tie. It’s already getting great 5* reviews.
"Let's just say the steam-factor on this book is a 10, on a scale of 1-5. The dang thing mighta crashed my iPad it was so freaking hot. I loved every dirty second of it. Recommend to all lovers of M/M romance, and ménage."
"Oh please you must read this story. If you like to read a fantabulouse threesome story this would be it. This would be a great time to start reading Lily’s books."
"This book had me on a emotional rollercoaster hoping for the HEA but definitely a ride I didn't want to get off until the end. If you love Erotic M/F/M books this definitely one you don't want to miss."
BLURB:
"If you enjoyed The Glass Knot you'll LOVE The Silk Tie."
Professional life in the City of London is tough going which is why my husband Gabe and I live by the motto work hard and play hard. So when something, or rather someone, comes along that changes how he wants to play I’m intrigued by our sexy new game.
But there's always private sides to the ones you love, and in this case new thoughts and desires are stealing Gabe’s dreams. It’s not until I meet Brent—gorgeous and sophisticated yet soul-achingly alone—that I begin to understand the complex layers of Gabe’s needs and exactly what I have to do.
But I’m not afraid; in fact the idea of two men turns me the hell on. In a whirlwind of romance, fear, desire and a new cresting wave of passion we open up to each other, testing the water for one weekend only. Or is it? Will we ever be the same again? Can Gabe and I survive our decision to let a third into our bed? Can Brent just walk away and, more importantly, will we let him?

Guest Blog: Lily Harlem: Oral Gratification
Oh, you dirty lot, I can hear you snickering from here! What
on earth do you think this blog post is about? Sex? Blow Jobs? Long, slow
licks? No, I’m talking about food in the erotic romance books that we all love
to read.
I recently
read a novel which, for several reasons didn’t hit my spot. It didn’t do the
job of engaging me in the story or making me care about the characters and I
think one of the problems was that they never ate. Not a morsel, not a single
scrap of food in several months on a timeline. They just didn’t need to, so it
seemed, which was quite unbelievable.
Off course
there are amazing books out there where the author hasn’t bothered with scenes
of the protagonist/s eating and it doesn’t matter in the least. Thrillers have
to keep the pace up, and eating isn’t thrilling (well, to most people). A short
story might be over and done with before any hunger pangs set in.
But food
can be a really useful tool to enhance storytelling. Another layer to add atmosphere
and an indicator of things going on beneath the surface.
Need any
more convincing of how fabulous food can be for fictional characters? Watch
this delicious scene from 9 ½ weeks, a classic film that still holds me
mesmerized.
Mmm, so now
I’ve got your attention!
But back to
the written word. How can food be used, well, some food has deep symbolic roots
the author can work with. It can reflect regional tastes, enhance the visual of
the world that’s been created and almost, if it’s done right, have the reader
imagining the tastes the characters are enjoying. I’m thinking of the first
story in my Hot Ice series, Hired , when the hero and heroine are having lunch.
See if you can picture where they are…
“Don’t fight it, I’m
not.” He paused as the waitress set down plates of barbequed fish and bowls of
vibrant salad glazed with a honey and mustard dressing.
“Anything else?” she asked, rubbing her hands
on her floral apron and squinting in the sunshine.
“No, this is perfect,”
Logan said, his gaze not leaving mine. “Absolutely perfect.”
Brooke and
Logan are on a beautiful tropical island and enjoying an al fresco meal at a
quaint harbor village. Did you get it? If not the harbour, it’s certainly a
fresh, summery dish that’s light and full of flavour and one that could be
associated with holidays in the sun and Caribbean Islands.
Food can
also indicate the time of year in which the story takes place. In my novel Cold Nights, Hot Bodies, the couple have just enjoyed
dinner in an English country pub with friends…
The meal was fantastic
and well worth the walk. The landlord made the cottage pie himself and served
it still wearing his blue-and-white striped apron. It seemed none of his staff
had turned up for work but it didn’t worry him since the pub was so quiet and
he was a jack-of-all-trades.
The conversation
between the four of us flowed easy and light. Rachel and Jeremy certainly
seemed well matched and very comfortable with each other. Jeremy even went as
far as spooning chunks of his chocolate torte into Rachel’s mouth.
It was cozy by the
fire and after a few glasses of wine and sitting within the curve of Shane’s
arm I began to feel my mood soften to one of utter contentment. I could stay
here forever.
Oh, transport me there right now! I love to snuggle up with
Mr H in our local pub before a log fire and with a nice meal warming my belly
and a glass of Merlot to hand – sigh!
This little
snippet, also from Cold Nights, Hot Bodies, tells a tale of it’s own about the
morning after the night before…
Breakfast arrived, a
fabulous spread of smoked salmon, eggs and fresh fruit, another pot of coffee
and a basket of croissants and Danish pastries. I tucked in eagerly as Shane
reached for a white envelope balanced against two glasses of freshly squeezed
orange juice.
“What’s that?” I
asked.
He read it with a
serious expression then looked up at me and grinned. “It seems the hotel is
advising guests to avoid travel. The lane to the nearest main road is
impassable because of the snow.”
I cocked my head and
nibbled on a slice of melon.
“They’re offering a
fifty percent discount to stay tonight,” he said, “No one coming in, no one
going out, they’re as stuck with us as we are with them.”
My heart flipped with
hope. Was my one-night stand about to
turn into a two-night stand?
Mmm, that
makes me hungry and the thought of a beautiful breakfast like that delivered
after a night of intense exercise between the sheets is just perfect.
The mention
of food can also show emotion and the relationships between characters. Missed
meals indicate stress and urgency but so can eating peanut butter out of the
jar with the biggest spoon in the drawer or wiping out all six portions of
chocolate mousse chilling in the fridge. In Breathe You In
– which by the way is on special offer this week – Kate is racked with grief in
the beginning of the book but as life takes a turn for the better, that’ll be
meeting Ruben Strong, she puts on weight and is pleased with that her curves
are returning. Food in this case shows an upward curve in the character’s
emotional well being and several times she digs in hungrily to cream cakes and
picnics when she’s feeling positive.
A wonderful
meal can also offer amazing sensory data for the reader and in Dessert, sushi eaten from a naked woman is what gets
my hero John in a very aroused state. Here’s a snippet… (EROTIC material)
I glanced at the woman
again. As her chest rose and fell with her slow breaths her breasts shifted
slightly. She had a freckle beneath her left nipple, on the downward slope
toward the heavier underside. My dick responded to my perusal of such a perfect
set of tits, my shaft filling and pressing up against the zipper of my suit
pants.
Damn.
“She has bathed in
fragrance-free soap and her body will warm the sushi and sashimi to perfection,”
Rai said. “As you can see she has absolutely no body hair for us to worry
about.” He looked pointedly at the aperture of her thighs and I couldn’t help
but follow his gaze. The satiny skin of her outer labia was a fraction darker
than the rest of her, a little rosier than the just-baked-biscuit look she
sported everywhere else.
I shifted on my seat,
irritated by my arousal when Rai was so calm and matter of fact. I guessed
years of dojo discipline could come in handy in more ways than one.
“The girls have many
hours of training, learning to lie still and quiet. For they are not allowed to
move or speak throughout the meal, though if they feel they are touched
inappropriately they ring.” Rai pointed to the brass bell just within reach of
our living plate. It had a red tasseled pull string and a fire-breathing dragon
etched onto the dome. “If the minders hear the bell, all diners in that booth
are physically removed and will never be allowed back to The Geisha Plate.”
“Oh, okay.”
“You understand that
there must be such rules to protect the girls who work here.” “Yes, of course.”
“And you must also understand that The Geisha
Plate does not advertise its unique style of serving Japanese cuisine. As you
are my guest, it is my duty to ask you not to discuss the evening’s
unconventional serving methods with anyone.”
“Well, no, of course
not. If that’s what you want.”
“Some Western and
Eastern cultures see nyotaimori as
degrading. But for many Japanese, we see sushi as an art form and it should be
a delight to every sense. What better way to serve it than on a truly beautiful
woman?”
“Well, I love sushi
and I have to say I love women too, so I couldn’t agree more.” I held out my
glass and had a sudden rush of appreciation for my supplier who had thought to
treat me to such a unique experience.
Rai filled my glass
and his. We drank once more.
Do you
agree with me? Do you think food/eating can enhance a story? Or do you think it
detracts from the important action? As a reader, do you enjoy culinary touches
in a book? As an author, do you use food as an element of your writing? Leave
me a comment, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
