Once Again Then One More Time

Earlier today, I was scrolling through Twitter and I came upon a conversation about Outlander. The topic centered around how they couldn’t watch the show anymore. That for them the magic was gone. That had me thinking about series. Sure, series are going to lose some fans. Times change, stories become dull or a myriad of other reasons. Series burnout, I call it. I have dropped a few series that once brought me enjoyment. And I’m sure you have too.

So, what happens when an author tires of writing a character or world? Agatha Christie killed off Hercule Poirot because she was tired of writing the character. Authors are encouraged to write a series to lure back the readers. And it’s wonderful when readers love the stories we weave and we can support ourselves by slapping our fingers against the keyboard but how do we keep our passion for the projects especially when we are under contract?

Through we are creatives we are still in business—the publishing business. I’m really don’t know a definitive answer to that question. I can only think of a few things. First, let’s set a challenge for ourselves. Perhaps, we can get more newsletter subscribers or getting an ad or an interview. Anything that can make us feel like we are growing. Second, rediscover what you loved about the story and add a dash of something new to spice it up. You can even ask your readers what they love about the series or even hate. That might help you see a bright new angle in your series. Third, get a hobby. Writing might have started off as a hobby that turned into a business so you need a different creative outlet.

Burnout is real and as both readers and writers, we must keep that spark alive. It will fuel us. Yet, sometimes we have to let go.

Have you written a series? Do you feel excitement?

Readers, do you have a series you love or one that you had to let go? So why do you feel the love for one and let go of another?

Who is Renee Vincent: I'm an author, a dreamer, a horse owner, and a medieval history buff. I'm a fun-loving, mildly eccentric, free-spirited kind of girl with a passion for books. From an early age, I've always had scenes playing out in my head. Whether it was a story with a moral or a tale with a twist, those ideas have never let me sleep until I wrote them out. And considering I have an eclectic ensemble of stories swarming in my brain at any given time, I write under a couple pen names to accommodate the various genre categories.

Renee Vincent
(Historical & Contemporary Adult Romance)
From the daunting, charismatic Vikings, to the charming, brazen Alpha male heroes of modern day, you'll be whisked away to a world filled with fast-paced adventure, unforgettable romance, and undying love.

also writing as
Gracie Lee Rose
(Lighthearted, Fancy-free Women's Fiction/Chick Lit)
For those who love to read fun, wholesome, and endearing romantic stories (with a smidgen of spunk) that your mother, sisters, friends, and daughters can enjoy.

What is the most important thing you do for your career now, as compared to when you first started writing?
I keep writing. Having a backlist has been the best marketing tool.

Of all your characters, who’s your favorite, and why?
I’d have to say my Viking heroes. Since high school, I’ve had an abnormal fascination with Vikings, particularly those in the 10th century. When I read my first Viking romance about twenty years ago, I knew then that I’d found the perfect genre for quenching my thirst for the bold, brazen, Alpha male. And because of my dream of being writer, it only made sense for me to write one of my own.

Do you eat comfort food/listen to music when writing?
My only vice is coffee. Gotta have my coffee with lots of whipped cream. My favorite Starbucks coffee is a Café Mocha, shot of vanilla, and double whipped cream.

Give one advice tip to an aspiring author.
Dream as big as you want, but set goals that are realistically attainable. Use each accomplished goal as a stepping stone toward that big dream.

And another would be: WRITE that next book! Nothing will help you more as a writer than having a backlist.

What genre would you like to try writing that you haven’t yet tried?
Young Adult historical fantasy. I have a premise, a title, a cover, and a different pen name for this upcoming project…I just have to find the time to write it. I’m hoping to finish it sometime in 2015.

Out of your entire backlist, which book has the best opening line?
From Raeliksen (book 1 of the Emerald Isle Trilogy)
I shall marry this woman, Dægan Ræliksen decided.

How many stories are swirling around in your head? Do you keep a mental list, a computer file, or a spiral notebook filled with the ideas?
I can’t begin to count the number of stories in my head and I don’t write any of them down. I usually write the next one that is bugging me the most. It’s usually the one that never lets me sleep.

Fun Stuff:
What is your favorite holiday and why – Christmas, I love to give gifts.

What are two things people might be surprised to know about you?
#1 I’m on the cover of USA Today Best Selling Author, Shelly Thacker's western romance, AFTER SUNDOWN, with cover model and dear friend, Billy Freda.

#2 I own a 1975 Stingray Corvette

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up – Writer
Favorite food – Mexican and Thai.
Favorite happy memory – anything that includes my little sister, Lindsey, still being alive.
Favorite drink – coffee.
Hot summer days or chilly winter nights – Oh gosh, HOT summer nights. I HATE winter.
What is the top thing on your bucket list – to go to Ireland and Norway.
If you could have a super power, what would it be – teleportation, so I could travel in a split second, either to present day places or in the past.

Too Busy To Breathe - Writing That Next Best Seller!

Have you ever felt as if life's burdens have piled so high on your shoulders it's difficult to catch your breath? Or perhaps your responsibilities and/or duties at work have doubled and there's no end in sight?

Well, you're not alone. As a full-time author, I too get overwhelmed. There's thorough research to be done, writing and editing deadlines to meet, and of course promo-- not to mention being a wife, and mother of two kids. It's tough to juggle it all and still stay afloat.

I've taken a good, hard look at my upcoming release/writing schedule for this year and I've started to panic. Mildly. Okay, moderately. But this isn't the first time it's happened to me.

Back in 2010 when I signed my first contract for Raeliksen, I actually signed for three books (the Emerald Isle Trilogy) to be published in that year and only one was written. To make matters worse for myself, I also signed another contract shortly after for a contemporary romance to release in between the other three full-length novels. Was I crazy or what?

Looking back, I was able to write, edit, and release all four books in a year and a half time span. I was up at all hours of the night to meet my deadlines, but I did what I'd promised.

Almost four years and six books later, I've come to that same crossroad again.

Check out my line-up for this year's release schedule:

  • January 30, 2014 - UNFORGETTABLE HEROES Boxed Set
  • March 17, 2014 - EMERALD ISLE TRILOGY Boxed Set
  • April 2014 - THE ROAD TO SOMETHING BETTER (Jamett & Joseph series, Book 2)
  • May 2014 - THE GIFT OF SOMETHING GRAND (Jamett & Joseph series, Book 3)
  • June 2014 - JAMETT & JOSEPH SERIES Boxed Set
  • July 2014 - WHERE THE WIND BLOWS
  • late November 2014 - MISTLETOE AND TINSEL (A Christmas Novella)
  • 2015 THE WARRIOR'S CAPTIVE - (Warrior Saga series, Book 2)

Am I freaking out, you ask? *EEEK* Yes. No. Well, maybe a little. (I won't lie to you.)

But I know I can do this because I've got the best support group in the world: my romance fans and fellow authors. Over the years, I've learned that romance readers and authors alike have one thing in common: they all want mind-blowing, adventurous, unforgettable, romance books. They want stories that move the soul and speak to the heart. Stories that stay with you long after one book is closed and another opened.

I've had the privilege of connecting with fans through my books, email correspondence, various social media outlets, and more. Because of their loyalty to me, they've voiced how much my books mean to them. They've taken the time to let me know how my stories have touched them deep inside; how my heroes have stolen their hearts with bold charm and daunting feats of bravery to save the heroine; how my plot-twisting endings have kept them guessing until the last page was read. (I've posted some on my website if you'd like to read what others have said.) That, in itself, is inspiration enough. And it's the one reason I will not fail my dedicated readers. I refuse to.

Despite that I may be stuck in a writing cave for the next 6 months, I'm motivated to meet this release schedule, come hell or high water. So, if you say to yourself, "Where's Renee Vincent?" -- Know that I'm not ignoring my romance fans or being unsociable. I'm plugging away at my keyboard, writing the next best seller.

You believe me, right? Or should I say "believe IN me?"
