Back To School and Start Anew.

It's Back To School season and this time of year always has me reminiscing about my school years. When the most important tasks were choosing this year's backpack, notebooks, pens, binders, and all the other stationery delights that awaited. I think of this time almost as if it's the teenage equivalent of New Year's Eve. A time to start over, begin anew, and with all the unknown promise that a new year holds. For me, school was the last century. The 90s to be exact and my school experience wasn't the stereotypical one. I attended a private, all-girl, Catholic high school. We had to wear wool kilt skirts and button-downs with Peter Ran collars. But as teenagers, we still yearned to express ourselves by bending the dress code rules.

So, we rolled up our skirts that were supposed to reach our knees so we could show off more leg. Of course, the nuns would tell us to unroll them. We did for a moment only to roll them up again once we were out of their sights. Another way to liven up our uniforms was through tights, colorful and stylish, we sought ways to reveal our characters. After all, the white knee-highs were standard uniform. I think back to those times and see how little rebellious details revealed our character—the girl who rebelled (me) and the girl who followed the rules, the classic styled girl and every character that could be found in the world. A time when teenage girls were exploring the world and discovering where we all fit in it. Even with all the teenage angst and uncertainty of the world, we stepped forward to find our place, to carve our path.

And we did with uniforms that got us detention or at the very least, a reprimand but we learned to be bold, be ourselves.

So, what was high school like for you? Do you have memories that fill you with nostalgia?

Talk about busy...it's August already?

Hi all and welcome to my day on Romance Books '4' Us !!!

Sorry it's better late than never I suppose :)
The 2nd of each month creeps up on my before I realize it.
Things are super busy this time of year.

Most kids around the country are either back in school or are going within the week or so.  Here in Michigan, well we're a bit delayed...matches my rhythm perfectly here lately.  My kids are still around underfoot for the next few weeks, not that i mind too much as they are pretty self sufficient.  We always go back to school two days after Labor Day so the official peaceful household will be celebrated on Wednesday September 7th.  But only for a partial day.  Their first day is an early release but once the bus leaves with my youngest two and my Senior drives off in her own car with her 8th grade brother, there will be a sigh from old mom here.  Another school year started and a bit bitter sweet as this will be the start of the Graduation planning.
I'm still struggling a little with having a child old enough to graduate soon.
Can't fathom where the time has gone.
My 3 sweet babies :)

Then as if I don't have enough to do with 4 kid, 2 7 y/o chocolate labs and 2 cats, we decided to get a puppy.  Our labs are getting older and we wanted to add a puppy while they were still young enough put up with one.  Her name is Aeri(pronounced R-ee), and i'm totally in love. She'll be 9 weeks old this Friday and she's ever so ornery and precious.

Of course there's always more to add to our ever busy life.
I have a few book deadlines hovering which i'm super excited about.

The only one i have a cover for so far is a Fairytale Anthology

And it's up for pre-order on Amazon
99¢ or free for KU
Unfortunately, I don't have more info to share on my own story in this just yet however
I can say you might hear a bit about some pigs and a wolf and a woman in red,
among a few other fairy tale characters you might recognize, but keep checking
my website, www.kristaames.com for more details.

Hope your summer is going great and hey, don't forget to check out RB4U's
monthly giveaway, located on the sidebar of this site !!!

Dear Diary...

While I’m pretty happy these days with the fact that my birthstone is the yellow-green Peridot, it hasn’t always been the case. Years ago, I had a little blue dictionary that included the birthstones for each month. Of all the colorful and flashy stones, I got stuck with one that was my least favorite color. Move forward many decades and I’ve looked a little deeper into the gem and found that it is a potent love amulet. What better birthstone for a romance author? Incidentally, green is one of my favorite colors these days. Anytime I can watch something grow, including gladiolus the month’s official flower, I’m a happy girl.

I’m sure I wrote all of this down somewhere in a diary that has been lost in one of my many moves. It’s what kids do. Maybe someday, someone will find one of my rambling tomes and discover what life was like during the sixties through the eyes of someone who experienced a rural community and a playtime that didn’t end when the sun went down but well after the lightening bugs came out.

I’ve often thought that these are the bits of bobs of what explains the ordinary, everyday life of people who aren’t Presidents or Generals or people of science but just as important, just as relevant. I had a very astute English teacher one year who requested that we read excerpts of Samuel Pepys diary. His account of the Great Fire of London on September 2, 1666 hooked me from the beginning. I started to understand that history was more than facts and figures and heads of state.

I love collecting diaries and the ones I’ve read are like love letters from the past, written by the people who lived their lives writing down what was important to them at the time. Every influence is evident, not only how they view their family and society but why. A child during war might remark that there are very few treats or laughter while an adult in the same household might record that food is scarce and they don’t know how they’ll feed everyone from day to day.

There is a certain amount of respect that I have for each diary that I’ve ever perused. These are the private thoughts that someone held dear; no matter what their age. I read them as such and have laughed and cried over triumph and tragedy and wondered what happened to the people who wrote them.

Years ago, Julia Cameron wrote about the artist’s journey and advised starting the day with morning pages, which is about as close as I come to keeping a diary, these days. Like most who journal, I don’t think my thoughts are interesting to anyone but me. Most of the time I’m writing about what I should be writing and I usually end up jotting down lines of dialogue or outlining a new project. Why it would interest anyone else, I can’t imagine but my children might get a chuckle one of these days. It’s always nice to amuse the family.

How about you? Does anyone else keep diaries, these days?

Until next month,
Happy Reading!
