Can you write a hot kiss?

If you are a romance author, obviously you have to write kissing into the story, whether its YA, mainstream romance, male-male, female-female, or erotic m/f romance. And knowing how to write a hot, sweet, delicious kiss can make your readers melt into a puddle and re-read that kiss time and again.

When we write a kiss, it's more than just a description of two people sucking face.

It's a buildup of passion between two lovers...a culmination of desire. A well-written kiss can be as satisfying...sometimes more so...than a hot round of bed play.

Take, for example:

"He kissed her thoroughly, his tongue washing her tonsils as he humped her hard and fast against the wall."

Hm. You didn't like that one?  I'm shocked!  That kiss took me three seconds to compose and write.  Okay...how about this one?

"He inhaled the sweet breath she gave him with her sigh, his hands slow and gentle as they skimmed her outline while he pressed her to the cool wall of the shower. The rhythmic pounding of hot water on their bodies made his hunger for her tighten his skin and muscles. Slanting his head slightly, he trailed his lips across her cheek, moving to taste the honey of her mouth as she panted with need. He gently nipped her lower lip, asking permission to taste fully, and she opened to his kiss like a flower seeking rain. His tongue slid past her lips to dance with hers in a slow, heated tango as her heart began to pound erratically against his chest."

Now, that one took a full minute. And it's not even over. That kiss can keep teasing and tantalizing a reader for another page. You could toss in an alpha move like:  "His lean fingers tangled into the wet hair at her nape as he angled her mouth to deepen the intimate taste, his thumbs sliding to the underside of her chin to tilt her head gently. The sound of her little gasp against his mouth brought a curve to his lips as he drew back to lick her throat and nip along the sensitive skin there, listening to her soft moans."

A little better?

Now, a kiss can cover a lot of territory. Of course, the mouth is the primary target in most cases, but it isn't hard to make your hero (or heroine) continue on down the line. Open-mouthed kisses on a shoulder, a collarbone, then the underside of a breast or pectoral can certainly wreak havoc with a reader's libido. And never underestimate the power of an intimate Australian Kiss...

Yes, kissing is not limited to the oral area alone. In fact, kissing the tummy and the ribs can result in varying degrees of titillation for a reader...

So take a little bit of extra time with kisses. It will pay off in the long run...

Hugs, and happy writing!

What a way to start a Sunday morning, Fran! And Father's Day at that!! I completely agree with you that kissing scenes can make or break the dynamics between a couple, or trio or more. Good ones aren't easy to write, not for me anyway, but it's one of my favorite parts of writing romances, And reading them. Thanks for a great post, Fran.Made me smile.
