So...There's a Reason Firefighters are HOT! And I'm Not Talkin' about Their Surroundings!

I'm part of a firefighter anthology that releases on September 29th. I'm very excited about this box set because it has a wonderful array of stories by a spectacularly talented bunch of authors. When I was approached to write a story about a firefighter, I jumped at the chance. I've always had a deep respect for first responders. And though we like to sexualize them in romance fiction, there's so much more to a firefighter than physical presence. Recently experiencing the anniversary of 9/11 surely reminded us of that. It was important to me to capture that unique essence in my hero, Duncan.

I've always known the men who fight fires are heroes. They epitomize the word. While we run away from a fire, firefighters run into it, risking life and limb to save lives and property. But what kind of man does it take to do what they do?

We throw the word Brave around a lot. We all have our own conception about what it means and that's cool. But one thing it doesn't mean is unafraid. I always thought it did. Of course these first responders are afraid...you'd be stupid not to be when you look at what they do on a daily basis. But that's where their bravery comes in. I'm afraid and I run away. They're afraid but they still run toward the thing that scares them. That's amazing to me. That's sexy. Sure, when we write firefighter heroes we make them look good. The hero depicted on my cover is downright lickable! But it isn't the broad shoulders, the chiseled jawline, or the piercing gaze that makes a firefighter sexy. It's the willingness to put himself at risk for someone else. That's the sexiest thing in the world to me.

A love that burns slowly burns longest, creating the greatest heat.

Though they haven’t seen each other for fifteen years, Duncan Yves has never forgotten Hilda Bennet, or the feelings of love and protection she engendered in him when they were kids. So when she becomes the target of a madman who kills with fire and calls his deadly work Art, it seems perfectly natural for Duncan to try to protect her. Unfortunately, he soon learns that protecting Hilda just might bring the past crashing back down on both of them.

Hilda was just a girl when she last saw Duncan, and her childish dreams of living with him behind a picket fence were squashed when he went away. But when they finally find each other again, the past that separated them all those years earlier still seems determined to keep them apart.

Can they nurture the embers of a love that was forged in childhood into the full-fledged inferno it seems destined to be? Or will the destruction of yesterday’s fire finally smother that blossoming flame, and leave their love in ashes?

###

Duncan prayed she’d gotten out before the fire really kicked in. His brain told him she probably had. But her succinct, terrifying text kept replaying itself across his mind.

Fire. Restaurant. Help.

“Hilda!” Duncan knew as he screamed her name there was very little chance she’d hear him. The kitchen was almost fully engulfed.

Fire tore a chunk out of his back and Duncan jerked under its sting. Then he realized he’d imagined it…his imagination fueled by a different time…a different fire. He shook his head, shoving back the nightmarish memory, and focused instead on finding Hilda. Duncan sprayed the dancing flames with the extinguisher, conscious of the men streaming into the room behind him.

Agony ate a hole in his arm and Duncan nearly dropped the extinguisher. It sizzled across his flesh and Duncan fell to his knees, the canister clanging loudly against the floor.

A hand touched his shoulder but he shook it off, shoving to his feet and glancing at his arm.
Nothing.

The pain had only existed in his mind.

Duncan stood in place, shuddering with terror, as men shouted and the blaze spat under a full out assault around him. He coughed, feeling as if his lungs were jammed up into his trachea, and moisture slipped down his cheeks as his eyes burned.

Somebody jerked on his arm. He shook them off, forcing himself to move forward. “Hilda!”

The smoke dodged and thickened around him, causing him to lose his sense of place or direction. At one point he found himself facing the door again, heading out of the room instead of deeper inside. He turned around quickly, rage shoving the last of his confusion away.

Dammit! He wasn’t going to let the ghosts of his past be the cause of Hilda’s death. He had to man up…shove the specters away. He needed to find her before it was too late.

Duncan raised the extinguisher again and started spraying. Flames dropped away under his assault, only to rise up again, seemingly unbeatable. He sprayed and moved, an inch at a time, until he was facing the back wall.

As he glanced to his right, intending to turn and cover the length of the long wall looking for her, something gleamed to his left. He turned to find a metal door.

Was it possible?

Pulling the sleeve of his oversized jacket to cover his hand, Duncan wrenched the handle of the door sideways. The latch disengaged and he pulled it open. Frigid cold wafted out to greet him, along with a mist he at first thought was smoke but quickly realized was just frost from the cold air meeting the inferno.

It was a walk-in freezer. Duncan’s view of the room was obscured by a side of beef that hung from stainless steel hooks high above his head. He reached out, shoving the frozen meat aside, and finally spotted her.

ABSOLUTELY CAPRI!

Absolutely Capri!
Faraglioni

Happy autumn, everyone. Our theme for September is Absolutely! I’m privileged to have a story in the RB4U anthology, Entice Me, an absolutely terrific set of love stories, coming in October. My story is Capri Nights, a sensual romance set on Italy’s Isle of Capri.

I absolutely love Capri. I’ve visited there twice and hope to go again. It’s a place of wondrous beauty and legend, and one of my favorite places in the world.

From Wikipedia:
Capri is an island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Naples in the Campania region of Italy. The main town Capri that is located on the island shares the name. It has been a resort since the time of the Roman Republic.
Some of the main features of the island include the following: the Marina Piccola (the little harbour), the Belvedere of Tragara (a high panoramic promenade lined with villas), the limestone crags called sea stacks that project above the sea (the Faraglioni), the town of Anacapri, the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), and the ruins of the Imperial Roman villas.
Blue Grotto

I love anything to do with Ancient Rome, so I’m especially interested in Capri during Ancient Roman times. More from Wikipedia:

Ancient and Roman times

According to the Greek geographer Strabo, Capri was once part of the mainland. This has been confirmed by geological surveys and archaeological findings.
The city has been inhabited since early times. Evidence of human settlement was discovered during the Roman era; according to Suetonius, when the foundations for the villa of Augustus were being excavated, giant bones and 'weapons of stone' were discovered. The emperor ordered these to be displayed in the garden of his main residence, the Sea Palace. Modern excavations have shown that human presence on the island can be dated to the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. Augustus developed Capri; he built temples, villas, aqueducts, and planted gardens so he could enjoy his private paradise.
In his Aeneid, Virgil states that the island had been populated by the Greek people of Teleboi, coming from the Ionian Islands. Strabo says that "in ancient times in Capri there were two towns, later reduced to one." Tacitus records that there were twelve Imperial villas in Capri. Ruins of one at Tragara could still be seen in the 19th century.
Augustus' successor Tiberius built a series of villas at Capri, the most famous of which is the Villa Jovis, one of the best-preserved Roman villas in Italy. In 27 AD, Tiberius permanently moved to Capri, running the Empire from there until his death in 37 AD.
In 182 AD, Emperor Commodus banished his sister Lucilla to Capri. She was executed shortly afterwards.
Marina Piccola

Now you have a little bit about Capri. What I remember most are the flowers everywhere, the festive crowds, the bright colors, the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Naples, and majestic Vesuvius rising in the distance, a monarch surveying his domain.
You can tell the native Italians from the tourists. The natives are better dressed. I loved sitting at the outdoor cafes enjoying luscious meals and rich wines. The Blue Grotto is thrilling and beautiful, but crowded and touristy. In Capri Nights, my heroine, Cat, tells the hero, Alex, that the Blue Grotto is too touristy for her. He tells her it won’t be touristy when she’s with him. And he is so right!
I first visited Capri when I was twenty-years-old. While there, I had a short fling with an Italian named Giuseppe who worked in our hotel. I called him Joseph. I’ve romanticized that fling over the years. Joseph is my inspiration for Alex in Capri Nights.
Here’s my blurb for Capri Nights:
A San Francisco sous chef discovers she might have bitten off more than she can chew when a scrumptious Italian man stirs up a recipe for romance on the delicious Isle of Capri.

Sous chef Cat Connors has spent a lifetime feeling like a stale cracker on a plate of fancy hors d'oeuvres among her stepfamily. But when she travels from San Francisco to the sunny Isle of Capri, she’s determined to finally shed her dowdy image and spice up her life. She has big plans for her future as a chef. Those plans don’t include a yummy Italian with a mouth-watering body and a smile that melts her insides like gelato under the hot Capri sun.

When Alex Viteli retreats to his villa on Capri to escape the notoriety and legal troubles brought on by his family, the last thing he needs is a beautiful, tempting dish of a woman. Alex may be the scion of a wealthy Italian family, but that won’t matter if he can’t cook up a scheme to clear his father’s name and keep himself out of prison.

Though they fit together like strawberries and chocolate, Cat and Alex may not have time for more than a quick bite of romance. Cat’s future is in San Francisco. Alex can’t leave Italy. But the sultry Capri nights might tempt them both to savor just one more sweet taste of love.

Read all the luscious love stories, including Capri Nights, in Entice Me, The Boxed Set, available for pre-order October 1, 2015.

Guest Blog: Barbara White Daille talks about Weddings! #RB4U #Romance

I do, I do…love wedding romances!

Romance novels tend to lead to happy or happy-for-now endings.  For me, there’s something very special about learning the bride and groom plan to tie the knot…to make their relationship permanent. Maybe it’s the satisfaction of knowing they’re taking the first steps toward their shared future. Maybe it’s the relief of seeing they’ve made it through the ups and downs of the book to have a future together.

Chances are I’m not alone in loving these stories, as many books either revolve around or wrap up with the bride and groom on their wedding day.

My current series is set at a small-town ranch with a hotel that caters to weddings and honeymoons, which means there are always wedding plans in the works! Writing the books made me want to learn more about traditions and superstitions associated with saying “I do.” Researching the topic was fun—and full of surprises.

Many of us might be most familiar with seeing a bride dressed in white. In some cultures, the choices range from white, to yellow and red, and to black.

While the brides and grooms in some families are showered with rice at the end of the ceremony, other couples may be pelted with confetti, bird seed, or peas. Most of these traditions are meant to wish the newlyweds good fortune, long life, fertility, or a plentiful harvest.

During the reception, many brides still toss their bouquets over their shoulders to unmarried female guests, and the grooms take and toss the bride’s garter to the unmarried males. Among other meanings, this is supposed to ensure the winners of the tosses will be next in line to be married—though not specifically to each other!

I was once in a cousin’s wedding party as a junior bridesmaid, and even at that age, I couldn’t miss hearing the saying that the bride must wear “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue—and a lucky penny for her shoe.”

In general, “something old” is for tradition and ties to the past. “Something new” provides good fortune going forward in life. “Something borrowed” (especially from a woman who is happily married) is intended to pass along good luck for the new couple. And “something blue” represents love and fidelity. The penny is, of course, a wish for wealth for the newlyweds.

Do you have any traditions of your own to share?  Or have you heard about or seen any other traditions or customs?

A REASON TO STAY

Ranch manager Pete Brannigan has no interest in playing tour guide to a city slicker like Jane Garland. But spending a few days with the headstrong photographer is a small price to pay for everything her grandfather has given the single dad. Though Pete's drawn to Jane's sharp wit and striking beauty, he won't hurt his young children by falling for another woman who puts her career before family.

Jane's seen the world through her camera…and used it to shield her emotions. With Pete, she can finally let her guard down. If only he could do the same. Despite their powerful bond, Pete still can't trust Jane with his kids or his heart. But if he keeps pushing her away, he may ruin any chance their relationship has to develop.

Guest Blog: Suzy Shearer talks about writing #RB4U @SuzyShearer

I’ve often been asked why I write erotic romance fiction and I guess the short answer is ‘because I can’.
When I first began to write I discovered I had a flair for explicit but romantic sex so I figured that was my forte.  Then I realised most characters in the books I’d read were in the late teens, 20s and 30s.
Why not write about the people I know and the ages we are? I decided I wanted to show that just because a person is older they aren’t sexy and attractive.
So now my heroes and heroines are always older. They range in age from 40s right through to 60s. Most are around 50. As well 99% of my heroines have been plus-sized women who are proud of their curves. I want to pull down all those stereotypes.
Of course there is a down side to writing erotic books.  When people find out often their reaction is to give a sleazy leer and make some comment about writing porn and being a sex maniac or else act horrified that I’d write such ‘trash’.
Also the general assumption I’ve had from many males is I’m some sort of nymphomaniac who jumps into bed with anyone and does every kind of weird sexual thing.
Just as authors who write adventures about killing people don’t actually go around with a huge machine gun shooting people, people who write erotic novels usually have a very happy stable relationship or are single like me without any sexual partner.

So next time you see an older woman who tells you she writes erotic romance say g’day – it just might be me!  ~ Suzy

PG13 EXCERPT:
They chatted a little about various jobs they both held. When he was called by someone else and moved away, Lucy casually glanced over at the hottie on the other side of the room.
Be still my beating heart. He was talking to another hottie!
This one looked a fraction taller, he had very dark, maybe black hair. His hair was like a wild halo around his head and his skin coloured a gorgeous rich deep burnt sienna. He had a much leaner frame but from here it looked all muscle. She couldn’t decide which one to drool over, they both looked absolutely delicious. She’d just have to lust over them both. She could see number two hottie wore a dark colour shirt and dark pants.
Hottie number one turned his head and their eyes met again. He gave her a definite smile then said something to his companion. He looked over at Lucy too and she found herself blushing. She fumbled with her drink and turned her head to look to the door.
Oh hell!
Rob was waving. She gave him a half-hearted smile and took another mouthful from her glass, only to discover it was empty. Somehow he managed to swim through the crowd and stand in front of Lucy.
“Can I buy you a drink, Lucy?”
She shook her head.
“No thanks, Rob.”
He looked disappointed.
“Dance?”
“Sorry, I told you I’m not much of a dancer.”
He looked her up and down.
“You look fantastic.”
“Thank you, Rob.”
“Hey, Lucy! Mark wants to see you, he’s near the bar.”
“Oh thanks, Margaret. Excuse me, Rob.”
She smiled at him in relief and silently thanked Mark as she made her way to the bar again. Nonchalantly glancing over to the other side of the room as she walked, Lucy noticed only one hottie there. She met Mark at the bar about to order drinks.
“Hey, Lou, just wondered of you wanted a drink. Margaret said she thought you’d finished yours and I wanted to buy you one before you left to say thank you for all the work you did for us.”
“Oh gee thanks, Mark.” Lucy quickly studied the mocktails list. “Can I have a Red Giant, please?”
It was a large glass filled with cranberry and strawberry juice then topped with lemon-lime soda. He ordered a large round of drinks and Lucy took hers from him as he put the others on a tray.
“Thanks Mark. I appreciate it and I enjoyed working with you all.”
She followed him back to the group but once again Rob intercepted her, this time at the side of the doorway again.
“I thought you didn’t want a drink.”
“I’m really sorry, Rob, it’s just Mark wanted to buy me one and I felt I should say yes because he is the office manager.”
She looked around, trying to see someone she knew nearby to save her from Rob but no one was looking.
“I asked you first,” he complained.
“I know you did and I said I’m sorry.”
In a gravelly voice he said, “Well, will you go out with me now?”
“No, sorry.” Lucy shook her head and tried to walk past him. He put his hand against the wall, preventing her from entering the lounge area without making a scene.
“I’m trying to be nice.”
“I know you are, Rob, and I appreciate it. I’m trying to be nice too but please, you have to understand I’m just not interested.”
“Why?”
“I don’t want to and as I told you before I’m involved with someone.”
Once more she tried to push past. He grabbed her wrist tightly and she was frightened by his reaction. He seemed angry.
“Please let go of my arm, Rob!” she hissed softly.
“Not good enough for you, am I?”
She looked wildly around. This was getting so out of hand.
She whispered through clenched teeth. “Please let me go, Rob.”
His hand actually tightened on her wrist. Lucy managed to keep hold of her glass but most of her drink spilt onto the floor. Suddenly a sexy male voice spoke behind her then kissed her cheek. She felt two hands on her shoulders, pulling her close.
“Babe! Sorry I’m late.”
She tensed, wondering what on earth was happening and who had his arms on her. She wondered if she should scream and felt her heart pound rapidly. Rob dropped her wrist and glared up at her rescuer. Her saviour held out his hand to Rob.
“Hi, I’m Sebastian, thanks for taking care of my girl.”

Protect And Serve

Consistent with the last few posts on superbundles and boxed sets, we've just launched one this week that has been rockin' the charts, Protect and Serve. Several months ago, a bunch of us were brainstorming to create something new: a combination of heroes from multiple walks of life. Firefighters, cops, Navy SEALs, covert spies and everything in between. We got alpha heroes like you've never seen before and why can we say this?

Because all the novellas in this anthology are brand new material.

Like most boxed sets, we started this one out at .99. Launch day and thereafter we had the #1 Romance Anthology in Mystery and Suspense, Mystery Anthologies and Collections, and more. We are still listed as the #1 requested anthology on Amazon and in the Hot New Releases in 3 categories.
I think readers love this blending of heroes. Here's our author note/mission statement:

We dedicate this anthology to the brave men and women who risk their lives each and every day so we all can enjoy our freedom--freedom to walk the streets, freedom to speak our minds, freedom to write the stories we love. Without you, these stories wouldn't be possible.

For that, we thank you.

So make sure your e-reader is fully charged, grab yourself some refreshment, and curl up to read these brand new, never even been seen before stories. Your new book boyfriends await...

It is appropriate, especially now, with police being the focus of cowardly acts by deranged people, firemen risking their lives to battle blazes in Hell itself, that we celebrate heroes of all kinds. We celebrate those heroes who sacrifice much and perhaps do not come home in the same condition as they left. So, we have wounded heroes, heroes unlucky in love, heroes finding love for the first time, heroes who do the tough jobs and then try not bring those stresses home to their families.

As a marketing tool, giving us cross promotion, it has been brilliant. Here are some of the comments:

"...a solid collection of stories that introduced me to some great new (to me) authors!" --Kelly M., Amazon Review

"With 11 short stories or novellas to choose from be sure and read them all." --Michelle Robinson Shealy, Amazon Review

"...I have discovered some new authors to read...I highly recommend you give this set a try!" --LeahHines, Amazon Review

"I couldn't put it down...well worth the late night reading session!" --Kelli Heneghan, Amazon Review
This has been an experiment for me. Most of the women in this set I've never even met, and never been in a collection with. Most of their fans are now new fans of mine, and vice versa. It's something I definitely would do again. This will be the 12th boxed set I've been in since 2013, and in many ways, the most satisfying because all of us truly came with something unique and special and never before released. I hope you'll give us a try.
Protect and Serve Contributors and their books
Sharon’s NYT and USA Today bestselling novels are almost-erotic Navy SEAL stories of the SEAL Brotherhood. Her characters follow a spicy road to redemption through passion and true love. All of her SEAL Brotherhood Series are available in audio book. She has maintained an Amazon top 100 author status in Romantic Suspense since the end of 2012.

Her Golden Vampires of Tuscany are not like any vamps you’ve read before, since they don’t have to go to ground, and can walk around in the full light of the sun. Honeymoon Bite, Book 1 of the Golden Vampires of Tuscany Series, has earned the Amazon designation of #1 Gothic Romance. It and Book 2 in the series, Mortal Bite are both available on audio as well.

Her Guardian Angels struggle with the human charges they are sent to save, often escaping their vanilla world of Heaven for the brief human one. You won’t find any of these beings in any Sunday school class. All three books in this popular series are also in print and audio formats.

A lifelong organic gardener, Sharon lives with her husband in the Wine Country of Northern California, where most of her stories take place. When she’s not writing, she’s getting verra verra dirty in the mud, or wandering Farmer’s Markets looking for new Heirloom varieties of vegetables and flowers.
