It's dark, it's hot, it's sexy, it's NIGHTFALL

leave me a comment and you might win the ebook of your choice from my backlist.

About a year ago the incredible author Joey Hill and I did a Twitter party together to promote our new releases. Our readers who swarmed us asked if we ever thought of writing a book together. I have collaborated before but Joey has always been a solitary writer so for her it was a big stretch. But we huddle din her room at a conference (disturbing everyone around us, of course!) and created the details outline for a story about a vampire and a cowboy. Can I say I was nervous every time I sent her my section to read? (Can you see I have no nails left?) because Joey's prose is just so beautiful. But somehow she put up with me and the book we created is, well, some of the best work I've ever done. So thank you, Joey. Here's your taste of Nightfall and we hope you enjoy it and will pick it up at your favorite online store.
Blurb:
Ranch owner Quinn Pedraza has to find someone to run the saloon he won in a bet, but more than that, he needs a woman who can handle his alpha personality…and closet submissive sexual cravings. When vampire Selene Torres arrives on the scene, he gets everything he wants—and learns what he really needs.
Excerpt:

When she stepped between the two men without hesitation, he bit back an oath. He was ten paces away, too far to keep her from getting mashed like Spam between two slapped-together pieces of Merita.
Instead, one slim hand landed on the barrel chest of Howie Gold, a regular, the other on the arm of a drugstore cowboy who’d probably said something stupid to set off Howie. They both had clenched fists and alcohol-induced stupid written all over their faces, but then she leveled that blue gaze on them. “You’re interfering with my getting a drink. And that pisses me off.”
She didn’t raise her voice, but she didn’t need to do so. The impact of her expression turned them into deer frozen in the headlights, waiting for a truck to hit. Those blue eyes held something... Well, he knew how crazy it sounded, given he could have picked her up under one arm, but the word that came to mind was dangerous.
Mesmerizing was a close second, and he meant it literally. Something about her quieted the crowd and held both men in place, those fists loosening into uncertain curls.
In contrast, that sense of danger made Quinn want to keep coming toward her. His cock had hardened, pressing against the denim of his fly and demanding release. No, demanding to be plunged into the tight wetness of her body.
There was no way she could sense his reaction. A handful of occupied tables were between him and her, plus a bunch of people on their feet to corral the fight. He was just one in the crowd. Yet when his cock stiffened, her gaze flicked away from the two men and lasered right to him.
He had a voracious sexual appetite and liked a dozen different kinds of kink. All the women he’d chosen in the past fifteen years—and the rodeo circuit had provided a lot of those--had seemed to enjoy sex with him. He tried to be a generous lover and, without ego, he knew he had the kind of alpha male personality women liked, strong and demanding in the right ways. Their willing compliance should have been enough for him.
Yet sometimes, lying awake in the hours before dawn, a sleeping woman next to him, he wondered if they were too obedient. Too acquiescing. And damn it all, that didn’t make any sense. It wasn’t as if they just lay there and waited for him to give them orders. Most of those relationships had had some substance to them, such that a couple became more than just casual sex. Annie had been the last of those, some time ago.
Since then, he’d had the occasional casual fuck, but it was half-hearted. He’d told himself it was because of how hard he was working, but he knew that was a lie. Every relationship had lacked some intangible thing he couldn’t put his finger on.
Something which he had the oddest feeling had just put its finger on him.

Guest Post: Sabrina York: Authors...Leaping into Bed With One Another! Why Do They Do It?

You may have noticed the recent trend of authors leaping into bed with each other to create amazing collections at an insane price. Oftentimes you can snag up to a dozen stories (which would cost you more than $25 if priced singly) for 99¢.

There are two schools of thought amongst authors. Some hate these collections; others see the value of expanding their brand and leveraging other authors’ fanbase.

For you, as a reader, it’s a win/win/win. Not only do you get a great deal, you can try new authors for a pittance. We are, of course, banking on the fact you will love our work so much, you’ll check out our other books. As you can imagine, 99¢ less all costs and divided by 12 authors does not amount to a hill of coffee beans. But sometimes it’s not about the money.

My first collection, Hot Alpha SEALs, hit a bunch of lists on Amazon and shot me up on the charts in military romance, suspense, contemporary romance and more. I reached many readers I could not have reached on my own. It was a great investment in growing my platform.

I have several other like projects in the wings including Hometown Heroes (coming this fall), naughty Elite Metal (coming in 2015) and the scorching box set, Brought to his Knees, available everywhere now. I hope you’ll follow me on my social media sites to get updates on my coming books!

So tell me, what do you think about collections? Do you ever buy them? Have you discovered your new favorite author in one?

Whipped is my contribution to the Brought to his Knees collection. It’s the tale of a hard, hot hero, a scalding attraction and an irresistible passion. It’s a pity she’s the one woman he can never have…
BLURB:
Dane Coulter is mourning the loss of his best friend, fellow Special Ops buddy, Cody. Oh, Cody didn’t die. It’s worse. He’s getting married. Cody is, in Dane’s opinion, whipped.

Dane swears he will never suffer the same fate. But when he meets a woman who can take all his dominant loving and beg for more, he realizes he may have met his match. It’s a damn shame she’s the one woman in the world his man-code deems untouchable…his best friend’s sister.

All Boxed And Loaded

I've become somewhat of a boxed set queen this year. Three times in the last 9 months anthologies or collections I've been involved in have hit the New York Times list. Six times the USA/Today list. These have been long term goals for me, things on my bucket list. I'm thrilled.

Although I am most known for my Team 3 Navy SEAL Brotherhood stories, I've begun a new venture involving SEAL Team 5, writing shorts for Bella Andre's Kindle World: Game For Love. So, while I complete Book 8 of my SEAL Brotherhood, SEAL's Promise, I am creating a whole new world around Team 5 for readers of Bella's dynamic worlds. My part will be a serial of three novellas that will end with a hard Happily Ever After in: The Beautiful Game: SEAL's Goal, SEAL's Challenge and SEAL's Score. This storyline is about a professional goalkeeper who comes home to bury his best friend since childhood, who has died on a mission as a Navy SEAL. Patrick Harrington decides to give up his lusty soccer player lifestyle to pursue the career his best friend had. The series will chronicle this journey, as he pursues the love of his childhood sweetheart, who was also the fiance of his fallen best friend.

I've been prolific this year. I've also traveled, attended more conferences than I should have, meeting wonderful fans and aspiring writers. All 11 of my books are now out in audio format. The boxed sets have increased my readership base through collaboration with other authors.

The industry is about to change again. Seems like just as we get used to one aspect of it, another comes along. One thing is for sure, being out there in the public with multiple books in series, released close together, whether in a collaboration with other writers, or our own work, is smart. Writing short or long, having dynamic book trailers or audio books, expanding street teams and social media, trying new venues like podcasting and video readings, blogging and showing up for Facebook parties, are all part of a successful writer's daily bread.

But it's still about the story. Fortunate for me, the more I write, the more stories I come up with. Here's the book trailer from my latest release, SEAL Of My Heart. We are completing the audio version of this book this week. The eBook and print versions are available now. Audio will become available mid September. Enjoy:

http://youtu.be/TgdLSIwq78Y

If you'd like a complimentary copy of the novella, SEAL's Goal, leave a comment here along with your coded email address, and it will be yours. If you'd like a complimentary copy of the audio version of SEAL Of My Heart when it's released in September, please request it by noting this in your comment.

Okay, now back to the beach and my SEAL Team 3. I gotta get this baby born and on to their Happily Ever After so I can begin the next in The Beautiful Game.

Interview of Bestselling Author Sandra Edwards

Today, we're excited to welcome New York Times and USA Today best selling author Sandra Edwards to Romance Books 4 Us! Sandra was gracious enough to answer some questions for us today as well as share her new release, Second Chance Bride!

1. You write in a lot of genres. Which genre is your favorite and why?

That’s like asking me to label one of my children as my favorite. Lol. I like to read in various genres, so I suppose that’s why I write all over the place. I’m basically writing books that I want to read.

2. You say that your books step outside the boundaries of conventional romance. Can you explain that a bit more?

They don’t follow the guidelines for the typical romance. For instance, Frank Garrett (the hero of Crazy For You) is a rock star, which I’ve been told by numerous editors at traditional publishing houses do not make good heroes because they’re typically “unfaithful”. Incidentally, Crazy For You is one of my more popular books. One thing’s for sure, people either love that book or they hate it. Either way, I’ve done my job to evoke emotion from the readers. FYI, Frank has never been unfaithful to his heroine

3. Your Billionaire Games stories are very popular. What is it about Billionaires that you think makes them such a popular story type today?

Romance readers love to read a modern day fairytale, and that’s basically what marriage of convenience stories are.

 4. Have your career goals changed since you started writing? If so, how?

Sort of. I try to carve out more writing time, but there are only so many hours in the day. Since I am Indie (and prefer it that way), I’ve had to take on the roll of publisher too—which is very time-consuming (but I’m not complaining).

 5. Describe your perfect writing environment.

I have a large desk with a comfy chair, as well as a couch in my office so I can move around to make myself comfortable. That’s the key for me. I need to be comfortable.

 6. Outside of writing, what is your passion?

Video games. I love to play RPGs with my daughter. We think the Final Fantasy and Star Ocean series are awesome!

7. What has been the most difficult thing about working as a writer?

Choosing which book idea to work on when I’m ready to start a new book.

 8. How do you set the mood when you write?

A playlist on my iPod that’s appropriate for the subject I’ll be writing about. A glass of sweet tea. A bowl of mixed nuts (no peanuts please. Lol). And no interruptions while I’m creating. That last one is a hard one to pull off if my husband happens to be home during the day. lol

9. What genre would you like to try writing that you haven’t yet tried?

I’d love to be able to write a regency romance, but I’m not well-versed in the language enough to pull it off.

10. Out of your entire backlist, which book has the best opening line? What's the line?

Oh, gosh! That’s as hard as picking a favorite book. Lol. Based on the number of awards it has won or finaled in, I’ll go with Incredible Dreams. The line is: There wasn’t a single ghost in the entire joint.

I love that! Tell us where to find you: website(s), publisher’s page(s), blog(s), Facebook page(s), etc. List them all!

Since I’m an Indie author, I don’t have a publisher, save one—Amazon Publishing (they asked me to write something for one of their lines, so I did). I can be found online at: www.SandraWrites.com (my website) www.SandyWritesRomance.com (my blog) https://www.facebook.com/SandraEdwards.Author https://twitter.com/Sandra_Edwards https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/703055.Sandra_Edwards

After being jilted, practically at the altar, Genie Wainwright heads to Hawaii to escape the well-meant pity party her friends and family are bound to throw on her behalf. What she never expects is to find someone to help her mend her broken heart.

Donnie Taylor, owner of the posh Sapphire Bay Resort, has no interest in marriage—until he meets an unforgettable guest at the hotel. What starts out as a kindhearted gesture brings Donnie something he never expects—a chance at love!

~~*~~

“Seriously, Gene…” Cami’s voice echoed from the cell phone in Genie’s hand. “You went on a date last night?”
“I wouldn’t exactly call it a date.” Genie shrugged. “I think his mother put him up to it.”
“His mother?”
“Yeah. I think they both work here at the hotel.”
Cami sighed. “Well, if nothing else, he’s a great transitional guy to get back in the swing of dating.”
“I’m not really interested in dating anyone.” Even as she said it, Genie knew she was lying as images of last night flickered though her thoughts. Donnie was so easy to talk to; not to mention completely gorgeous. She wondered what his job was at the hotel, and how long he’d had to save to take her on that dinner cruise last night? It just didn’t make sense that he’d spend that kind of money on a girl his mother had pushed him into taking out to dinner. Maybe the dinner cruise was a reward from the hotel for his exemplary service. No matter how it happened the truth was, she was interested in dating Donnie, but he lived half a world away. “Besides, there’ll be like two thousand miles separating us when I go back home.” That was just it. Genie was going home, and sooner than she’s like. In a couple of days.
“Typical,” Cami said. “You finally meet Mr. Right and he works in a hotel in Hawaii.” Her laughter teetered off.
“Mr. Right?” Genie scoffed. “Nobody said anything about Mr. Right. Besides, we’ve only had one date. One.”

“Doesn’t take more than a taste of the wine to know if the bottle’s a keeper.”

Christmas with the Marquis!

Don't have a cover for this one yet, but  it's a new Christmas story that's just now being edited.

It's a new Christmas story, a novella, that I have a lot of fun writing. It's set in the Regency period, when Christmas was a little different. No Xmas trees, as they didn't arrive in England until Prince Albert brought the idea over from Germany and when Queen Victoria embraced the idea everyone else did too.
So there's no  tree in this story, but we do have holly, berries, red and green swags, and the most important thing, mistletoe. This story is not erotica, but sensual. There's as wicked a villain as one could want, and a heroine who starts out detesting the hero.  Here's an excerpt:

"Abigail did not take kindly to having an almost constant companion. Jason attached himself to her, seldom letting her out of his sight. She fretted at the lack of privacy and took her ill humor out on Jason. He merely smiled when she railed at him to leave her alone.
Still she couldn’t let it go.
“I’ve taken care of myself for years, my lord. Without any help from you at all. Now please go take care of your other guests.”
That comment brought a reaction she’d not expected. Jason’s face flushed with guilt, and he etched a formal bow and left her. In fact he left the room.
She stared after him, and then reddened. Blast it all. He thought she was still angry for her childhood years, when she’d been a pariah in her father’s house. Because of him. She hadn’t meant that at all. She’d merely been thinking of how she’d always done pretty much what she wanted, disregarding the social life she’d been cheated of but thoroughly enjoying her independence.
She still found it hard to accept help from anyone. But she’d hurt Jason. She hadn’t meant to do that at all.
Following him, she ran out of the room and onto the patio. He was leaning against the balustrade, staring out into the dark garden. Hurrying to him, she spun him around and cradled his face in her hands.

“Jason, I didn’t mean anything but that I’m tired of this whole business. Not you. Just that I hate this tension, and I hate the way I’m reacting. Please forgive me.”
He flung aside the cheroot he’d about to light, and grabbed her by her arms.
“Abigail, do you know what it would do to me if you’re harmed because of me? Do you have any idea?  Do you?”
Before she could answer he’d wrapped her in an almost desperate embrace, kissing her with a wild passion he’d not shown her before. His lips left hers and he lowered the bodice of her thin evening gown, kissing the curving tops of her breasts. She gasped and started to melt into his embrace, then pushed away from him.
“Jason, we have to stop. We’re in full view of the living room.”
He brought her close again and briefly laid his cheek on her hair. Drawing a ragged breath, he stepped back.
“Abby, you destroy me. Go back in, sweetheart. I’ll follow in a little bit.”
She looked at him doubtfully, then turned and did as he said. Jason got another cheroot out of his pocket and lit it. He needed something to do to distract his thoughts and give his too solid erection time to subside.
For the moment his thoughts were not at all on his enemy. If they had been, he might have sensed the evil presence in the group of firs across the lawn.  He didn’t realize he’d just delighted his foe by displaying his biggest vulnerability. Anyone watching Jason would have to be blind not to realize just how to make him suffer the most."

One more little fact. I took a poll on Facebook to name the heroine, and Abigail won easily!

I can be found at all the usual places, or write me at jeanharstewart,earthlink.net.
Love comments, so please take the time to tell me what you're thinking.

Guest Blog: Marliss Melton: Who's the Real Navy SEAL?

Over the weekend I went to the beach at Dam Neck Navy base, where the SEALs in my novels live and work. I was there for “research.” (A good writer wants to know if there really are picnic tables in front of certain buildings and what the immediate environment looks like.) As I sat under my umbrella trying to keep my freckled skin out of the sun, I asked myself which of these hunks are Navy SEALs. (Their faces have all been blurred to keep the real SEAL from being identified.)

Hard to tell, isn’t it? The point in this exercise isn’t just to treat you to some eye candy but to prove that SEALs come in all different shapes and sizes. I’ve seen tall ones and very short ones. I’ve known thin ones and large ones, but I can say that I’ve never known a terribly fat Navy SEAL unless he’s retired. The same goes with the SEALs in my books. I’ve got a former NFL player who is 6’6” and a senior chief who is only 5’7”. I’ve got brunettes and blonds and even redheaded SEALs—bald ones, too!

The only thing all Navy SEALs have in common is that they’ve got phenomenal mental strength. They’ve been driven to the brink of human capabilities, and they don’t quit. Neither exhaustion, nor physical torment, nor biting cold, nor chilling fear can induce them to give up. They have endured excruciating training and they continue to endure in the darkest, scariest parts of the world. These are America’s super heroes, and they’re the worthy subjects of my stories. Come enjoy the lot of them!

PS. The real SEAL is the last one!

BIO:
Marliss Melton is the author of over a dozen counterterrorist/romantic suspense stories, including two Navy SEALs series (SEAL Team 12 and Echo Platoon), a counterterrorist Taskforce Trilogy, three novellas, and two short stories. She relies on her experience as a military spouse and on her many contacts in the Spec Ops and Intelligence communities to pen realistic and heartfelt stories about America's elite warriors and fearless agency heroes.

BLURB: DANGER CLOSE (Book 1 Echo Platoon series) was just released.
When Lt. Sam Sasseville rescues environmentalist Madison Scott from a drug-infested town in Mexico, he hopes never to see the lovely environmentalist again. Maddy promptly appears in the terrorist-threatened region of El Chaco, Paraguay, where the SEALs protect American oil wells. Caught up in the power play, Maddy unwittingly leads Sam’s platoon to their targets, endangering herself, and terrifying Sam who realizes he’ll go to any lengths to keep her alive. But unless he can accept Maddy for who she is, he’ll have just his pride to claim when the mission is over.

Wandering Body Parts - How Do They Move?

Read your books carefully and see if you find any "wandering body parts". What am I talking about?

Remember: body parts can't move on their own.
Examples:
Her arms flung out to grab him.
His hand rubbed her back.
Her eyes swept across the room to the door.

A person has to DO the action using body parts; they can't DO anything on their own (unless you detach these parts and they have the ability to move on their own).

How many times have you read "wandering body parts" (WBP) sentences without thinking about them? I would guess many times. Your brain knows what the author is trying to say, and you just accept "moving parts"!

Pick up a book you're reading or have read, and really look at action sentences. Do body parts move on their own? Or, has the author remembered to "make" movements possible. For erotic books, WBP can be funny (or if you're so engrossed in the action you don't notice it) and make you wonder just how DOES sex happen between the characters!

I know that when I judge contest entries, I'm more aware of WBP...maybe because I'm reading with a different sense of WHY I'm reading. For books I choose to read, I may skip over WBP a number of times. But if it becomes clear that the hero/heroine have lots of disembodied parts moving all over the place, I usually take note and will either finish reading the book realizing this or decide to stop reading.

Do you have any WBP encounters to share? Have you (authors) been guilty of this?

Romance Novels ~ Coming of Age?

Sooner or later, most romance novel readers experience the sting of criticism from someone who looks down on such reading material.

Whether you were caught off guard while reading a romance, or mentioned how enjoyable you found a particular book, you were probably shocked when you saw the veil of judgment descend across your friend’s face.

The self-appointed judge and jury stared at you with a condescending smirk. Or worse, made a cutting remark about ‘silly’ novels, or announced they’d never have suspected you enjoy reading such ‘trashy’ material.

For those of us who admit over cocktails at a dinner party that we write romance novels, the judgmental looks and comments can take on an even dimmer degree of censure. The slant shifts to, “you must be a millionaire since so many people read that drivel,” or, “anyone can write one since there’s nothing in them.”

And it’s not just men – a fair share of women look down on romance novels. I’ve often wondered what lies behind this attitude.

The pages of romance novels mirror our lives. They are filled with love, doubts, getting along, overcoming obstacles, loyalty, loss, truth, trust and compromise. They are often about sexuality, whether the bedroom door is open or closed.

Always complex, they deal with psychology. Two flawed people face their fears and grow. We cheer them on and journey with them. By the end of the story, the heroine is empowered and more self-confident than she was at the beginning. She faced her greatest challenges and also found love.

That’s just the love aspect... we also have all the different genres, locations and lifestyles to choose from. We can time travel to ancient Ireland where we fall for a king, or fall in love with an alien on a different planet. We can learn history from the historical romance set in ancient Egypt or be stalked by a lonely billionaire in downtown New York. There’s a romance for everyone.

Romance novels are entertaining, but are also relationship teaching tools. We learn from the cause and effect that plays out between the covers.

Many people believe bodice-ripping covers caused some misperception over the years.

If so, how do we account for the explosive sales figures of erotic romance, and the lengthy bestseller status of 50 Shades of Grey? Millions of people have purchased it, many of whom aren’t your average romance readers.

It’s been said that people don’t buy 50 Shades of Grey for the sex; it’s the dynamic of the man/woman relationship that fascinates them. Just like men buy men’s magazines for the articles, not the pictures.

Romance writing has morphed over the past two decades, and this makes it possible for more people to enjoy it. Characters and plots are often more realistic now, and just about anything is possible. Sassy, opinionated heroines who don’t need a relationship are swept off their feet by the guy next door, a poet who is in touch with his emotions and oozes tenderness and strength all at once. Not that the aloof billionaire has sailed off into the sunset in a mega yacht just yet...

As more readers can relate to these ‘new’ heroes and heroines, it’s likely the public view of romance novels will be more positive.

What do you think? Have romance novels generally come of age in the eyes of the public? Do you think the wave of popularity surrounding erotic romance has helped shift public perception?
