Guest Blog: Theresa Snyder talks about The Twin Cities Series #Paranormal #RB4U

What is the Twin Cities Series? It's a collection of novellas shaping an urban fantasy world unlike anything you've ever imagined! The Realms is a Gothic metropolis populated by creatures of horror, fantasy and mythology, existing in a dimension separate from ours, yet connected by more than just the portals linking our worlds together. A place of constant danger, mystery, and excitement, where not even the city itself remains free from change.

It's the home of urban fantasy adventure, romance, and comedy. A mix of genres for a unique reading experience that you won't soon forget.

Cody is the central character in The Shifting Books of the series. He is a shape shifter with some monumental problems that all started when he died. He’s escaped to The Realms from the midlands between Heaven and Hell only to find his best friend is potential food for the resident vampires, his girlfriend only loves him in his wolf form and her mother…well that’s a whole other story.

It isn’t easy being Cody, but like a good wolf he’ll do what he can to protect his pack even if it kills him. Wait…he’s already dead.

Author Bio:
Theresa Snyder is a multi-genre writer with an internationally read blog. She grew up on a diet of B&W scifi films like Forbidden Planet and The Day the Earth Stood Still. She is a voracious reader and her character driven writing is influenced by the early works of Anne McCaffrey, Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, and L. Ron Hubbard.  She loves to travel, but makes her home in Oregon where her elder father and she share a home and the maintenance of the resident cat, wild birds,  squirrels, garden, and occasional dragon house guest.

Guest Blog: Lynn Crain, author of The Blue Moon Magic Series #PNR #Romance

It Ain’t All Roses

This past weekend, I went to a conference in Munich, Germany. I was really jazzed to be going and even more excited about the subject matter that I was going to talk about #SocialMedia. Apparently, because of all my blogs and my longevity in the business, I’m seen as something of a guru. While I will say I do know a lot, I will never know it all.

Saturday came and I went to the opening of the conference that morning. Even though there were people arriving on Friday, the first official day wasn’t until the day of my talk. I mingled with the crowd there and my traditional ebook publisher Tina Haveman from eXtasy Books, but I knew I was a fish out of water as this wasn’t my normal crowd. Most of the people in this group wrote gay fiction or some form of BDSM or erotic fiction. Most of my works were tame in comparison. Looking around I also realized that I was probably one of the oldest writers in the room.

I fretted as I always do but once I met with my panel partner, RJ Scott, I knew we’d be fine. We had planned for this and even had handouts, something I hadn’t seen anyone have so far. When it was time for us to start, RJ and I took our place and suddenly, two new people came in and took the other chairs. We looked at each other stunned, not understanding what was happening but saw two more people had been added to the panel without a word to us beforehand.

Immediately, the dynamic of the whole talk had changed and I remembered a saying I’d been touting on my Wednesday Blog, My So-Called Writing Life. It goes something like this: it ain’t all roses nor is it tiaras and limos. In this writing life we’ve chosen for ourselves, everything can change in an instant. Either we can go with the flow, be flexible and be ready for anything or we can be miserable and disappointed.

Because of this change in dynamic, I went into flex mode and opened with something I never thought I would. I started with, ‘ You’re looking at the dinosaur in the room’ then I proceeded to explain why. See, I did not grow up with #SocialMedia. I grew up with floppy disks the size of dinner plates. And games where we only saw our characters move one space at a time. Never mind the fact they were X’s on a black screen and only when they had moved over a spot was it revealed. All book sales were done by word of mouth or by expensive ads in print media whereas the opportunities we have today were boundless.

As I went over the history of how #SocialMedia came to be, I felt some of the tension go out of the room because I had everyone seeing what life was before. And just how hard it was to be an author then. It was almost as if there were those who would see how we handled the new dynamic but I paid them no mind. I also went over the fact that a top criteria for today’s author is to be flexible. Things rapidly change. Everything we do today is seen as marketing or branding and that may not be the case. This very talk was a case in point.

My panel partner was very disappointed on how the talk went because we had planned to go over the pros and cons of #SocialMedia and how today’s author could use it to their benefit. As it was, we went over very little of what was planned and more into that marketing and branding scheme so many see #SocialMedia being. People were apologizing for the next two days because of what some saw as a debacle. I saw it as an opportunity since I trudged on and gave out information as topics came up.

Yet, through it all, something miraculous happened. Every time I went by someone who attended the talk, I would get some version of ‘ah, my favorite dinosaur’ and I’d smile. I had made an impact where I thought none would be made. People might not remember the #SocialMedia aspects of our talk, but they would remember me telling them about the history and how I had seen it all.

Our handouts went into the goodie bags that were given out on Sunday, so everyone knew we had a well planned talk in mind. We got apologies as well as compliments on how we’d handled things considering. Our talk was one of the most commented on plus the fact I’m pretty sure both of us were invited back. I know I was.

And while it wasn’t the best experience, it gave me more of working outside my comfort zone and practice on being flexible. In my honest opinion, every author needs a little of both since there are days the writing life isn’t like we planned.

Autumn: Earthly & Unearthly

First, I wish you a delightful autumn. Drink in the scents of fall, feast your eyes on the bejeweled colors, and savor the tastes of the season.

Autumn stories tend to fall into two main categories: earthly and unearthly.

Earthly autumn stories are much the same as those written for any other time of year, with only seasonal, weather and holiday changes. These provide backdrops for wonderful themes and plot twists.

Unearthly stories are cut from a very different cloth. Usually the world of the paranormal – whether light or dark – comes into play. For those who write in this genre, there are few ‘musts’ or restrictions, and just about anything goes as long as the integrity of the story is sound. We can indulge in exotic world building, travel on an alien space ship, use stone circles to pass through time portals, and allow witches to brew potent magic potions.

The standards for authenticity vary depending on which genre we choose to write in. Some authors have a passion for research and accuracy, and express it in their novels. Loops exist where an author who writes thrillers or murder mysteries, for instance, is expected to have impeccable knowledge of FBI guidelines, morgue procedures, CSI skills, ballistic expertise, as well as knowing just about everything a practicing attorney would know about wills and child custody.

This is not the only genre where an author is held to an extremely high factual standard. Historical romance can be just as demanding. There have been many heated debates about how historical fact should be woven together with a fictitious story.

The paranormal writer, on the other hand, can get away with – murder. Of facts and procedures, that is. Mermaids can steal humans away beneath the sea, only to find the human can breathe by way of magical infusions, time travel can be a mode of transportation, curses can turn people into insects, and a mischievous djinn or ghost can interfere with life and love. Humans can even mate with extraterrestrials and vampires are immortals.

To many, the paranormal world may seem delusional or a haphazard product of author fantasy. While it can be, much of it is based on ancient legends and tribal teachings that morphed over time. It is not as haphazard as it may seem. The beautiful painting below is of the goddess Night, painted in the 1880s.

There is a genre suited to everyone’s style of writing, and stories to entertain every reader.

Where does your writing fall on the scale of absolute fact or fantasy? Earthly or unearthly?

As a reader, how do you feel about the different degrees of factual accountability depending on the genre?

For this author, as long as a story is compelling, well written and structurally intact, it can be enjoyed.

Interview of Author B.C. Brown

Today I'm pleased to present an interview of romance author B.C. Brown.

Latest Book: A Touch of Madness
Buy Link

BIO:
B.C. Brown was born with six fingers on each hand endowing her with super powers, thus enabling her to fight crime. When a freak Cuisinart accident severed the additional digits and her powers, B.C. was forced to fall back on her secondary talent - writing. Now she lives between the pages of a book - whether she has written it or not. Until she finds the surgeon to restore her fingers and powers, she has published three novels to date. She has also been included in two anthology collections. She enjoys writing mystery, paranormal romance, science fiction and fantasy but is always in the mood for a challenge to branch out. You can follow her crime fighting or writing at twitter or facebook.

Q: How did you celebrate publishing your first book?
A: By scaring the crap out of my dog. I scooped him up in my arms and danced maniacally. Looking back I’m fortunate no one saw it or else I’d be answering from a padded cell.

Q: Your novel is being made into a TV series/movie. Who’s in your dream cast?
A: Danai Gurira from The Walking Dead of a certain for Abigail St Michael.

Jim Caviezel from The Count of Monte Cristo (and so much more) for Nikolas. Boy, I hope he can do a slight Russian accent!

Q: What is the most important thing you do for your career now, as compared to when you first started writing?
A: I bother with marketing now. In my youthful arrogance I believed my writing was so excellent the books would just sell themselves. I’ve since learned (through having it smack me in the head hard) that I must dedicate as much time to marketing as I do to the initial writing process. Sometimes I need to dedicate more.

Q: How much of yourself is hidden in the characters in the book?
A: My characters are me. In one form or another. Abbey has my scatterbrained thoughts; Rose (from my fantasy novel) is insecure and fearful of herself and abilities; my characters from my short fiction share my sense of wonderment, my desire for lasting love, my childhood disillusionments. I don’t know how to write unless I infuse my characters with at least some of my own blood.

Q: If you could change something about your first book, what would it be?
A: I would have fleshed it out more. There are two other books in the series that I should have gone ahead and combined with the first book, making one epic fantasy instead of turning it into a series.

I also would have put a little more focus into the supporting characters. Some I didn’t give much motivation for their actions. They seem shallow and two-dimensional. Fortunately for me I can remedy both. In six months the contract is up with the publisher it is under and I plan on re-tooling the work and republishing.

Q: How do you choose names for your characters?
A: I don’t really choose. They name themselves. Rarely does one change names after I’ve been writing. I do have a lengthy selection process for choosing surnames. I take from my real life, selecting names that interest me. If possibly, I’ll ask people about their surnames – country of origin, known folklore or stories, common mispronunciations etc. – and then tack them onto the names and mix and match until one seems to fit.

Q: Give one advice tip to an aspiring author.
A: Do your research. Know who you are publishing with; have your contracts vetted by a literary lawyer; check with authors through that publisher and find out if they are disgruntled or happy; learn how to properly promote your book before it comes out; and talk to existing published authors about what works for them and what doesn’t and TRY THEM ALL!

Q: What genre would you like to try writing that you haven’t yet tried?
A: Horror. I adore horror novels. Buuuut… I’ve tried writing them and they seem just a bit beyond my grasp. For now.

Q: Any part of a book that drives you crazy as you write: beginning, middle, or end?
A: Middle. I’m liking a steamroller at the beginning and the end. Nothing can stop me. Then there is that middle section where I have to figure out how to connect the previous dots with the next dots.

Q: Out of your entire backlist, which book has the best opening line? What's the line?
A: Sister Light, Book One: Of Shadows. The opening line: Beware the child with the pale blue eyes embodies the entire series in 8 simple words.

Fun Stuff:
Q: What is your favorite holiday and why?
A: Halloween. I love to make believe. This holiday allows you to be anything, absolutely anything, you want. If you have the ingenuity to come up with a truly kick ass costume too, then you’re rewarded for it.

Q: What are two things people might be surprised to know about you?
A: I’m scared of the dark. No, seriously, I am. I have to restrain myself from running from the light switch to the bed and jumping in. I also won’t walk around my own house in the dark. I keep a nightlight on all the time.

I really need to wear glasses. Vanity holds me back a bit. It just bothers me that, since I already wear hearing aids, I need to wear glasses for reading. Somehow the combination of the two makes me feel a lot older than my years.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: A best selling author and a pilot. I had big aspirations.

Q: Favorite food.
A: Sushi. I always want it. I will never turn it down.

Q: Favorite happy memory.
A: Pretty much any time I spent with my sisters growing up. Since they were a decade older than me, they weren’t around much after age 7. They did make it a point to visit as frequently as they could however. They’d breeze into town, wine (so to speak) and dine me, and we’d bond. Most of the time I felt like an only child until they would come and visit. Then I felt like I was more part of a family unit.

Q: Favorite drink.
A: Orange juice. Can’t lay off it.

Q: Hot summer days or chilly winter nights?
A: I’m a summer baby, born and bred. I prefer to be hot to cold. I can say there is something about snuggling with someone under warm blankets on a chilly night, however. But I’d still rather be running around nearly naked and figuring out ways to keep comfortably cool. Probably one of the reasons I moved from the Midwest to the Southwest.

Q: What is the top thing on your bucket list?
A: Other than write a best seller? Hmm… Live in a foreign country. I like to know different points of view, different interests. I enjoy learning about people. I feel that it is difficult to really learn about another culture until you immerse yourself in it.

Q: If you could have a super power, what would it be?
A: Perfect mimicry with the ability to blend and modify. Or to fly. I mean, who doesn’t wish they could fly?

BLURB:

Abbey St. Michael, former cop and psychic consultant, is trapped in a tricky situation. When her ex-husband enlists her specialized help in bringing his new fiancee’s killer to justice, Abbey finds herself obligated by guilt to take a case she knows is bad news both professionally and personally. But when her former boss gives her the evidence collected to date, Abbey realizes this case may end up being worse than she thought. With the clock ticking to prove the killer’s guilt, she needs to assuage herself of her ex-husband’s guilt and rectify her professional life with her personal life. But when the murders take a turn, Abbey realizes this case may end up changing her life and her future forever.

EXCERPT:
Lieutenant Jason Davis towered in the center of the red haze, a skeletal giant in tweed. The uniformed officer with the green-tinted face escorted me into the room of the posh home on Lakeshire Boulevard in Savoy, Illinois. Upon my entrance, I was clear on why all the cops were downstairs and why they'd drawn straws to see who would escort me up to the crime scene. My stomach made a violent lurch as my brain realized the bedroom wasn't actually painted and upholstered in the bright red color my vision took in.

It lurched but stayed put.

Cookie for me.

I was working on not vomiting at every damned scene I worked. That was, at least, not before viewing anything psychically. Oh shit, I don't know you yet. I'd almost forgotten. Here's my spiel.

My name is Abigail St. Michael; I'm a tactile clairvoyant, meaning I touch objects and people and see the past. Right at that moment I was standing amidst a horrific scene of blood and gore. A pile of fleshy-looking hamburger that used to be a human being was under a red sheet by my aforementioned friend, Lieutenant Davis, lead homicide detective. My job was to lay my beautiful and gifted black hands on that once pile of humanity and psychically “see” the killer responsible for shredding the poor bastard-
Or is it bitch if it's a woman?
-poor soul whose blood, brains, and guts were strung like party streamers gone wrong.

Oh God.

I turned to the uniformed officer who'd drawn the short straw and he promptly handed me a trash can.

Where the hell had he gotten that without me noticing?

Yeah, my name is Abigail St. Michael. I am a tactile clairvoyant, a professional on retainer with the Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy, Illinois, police departments. But right at that particular moment, I was busy vomiting up my Belgian Waffle breakfast violently.

Ah, the glamour of a cop's life.

Anything else you’d like to add?
I love hearing from readers. All authors do. For me, whether it’s good or bad, I want to hear your input. I know my voice and style (which is sometimes crass and vulgar) isn’t going to be for everyone. Regardless of what you have to say… Tell me! Shoot me a note, hit me up on Facebook or Twitter or Goodreads, leave me a review. If I can’t stress anything more, review the authors you read. It helps other readers decide who to and not to read. And, believe it or not, some of us authors learn from your reviews. It’s really a win-win. So review an author today!

The Value of Patience

Giveaway Alert: Comment on this blog post for a chance to win a RB4U T-shirt, size XL! Be sure to leave your email address with your comment. I will pick a random winner on February 3rd. Note: We only ship to US or Canada.

~ ~ ~

Patience is a virtue--unless you are in a hurry.

I have never been a patient person. I think that there are many other people in today's instant-gratification society that aren't patient, either. Between the internet, on-demand telivision, and fast food resturants, people are used to getting what they want now and not a minute later. Even an extra five-minute wait at the drive-thru window is enough to get people annoyed.

But life doesn't always give us what we want, does it? Sometimes things happen, and suddenly you are left feeling adrift. This happened to me a few weeks ago when my husband slipped on black ice over asphalt and broke his femur in six places. Needless to say, it was a life-changing experience.

For legal reasons, I can't give the details of the accident or his recovery, but you can imagine that it will be a long road for both of us before our lives return to anything even remotely close to normal. Most of my writing has been put aside to handle his care--and it is a lot of care. Not only did his femur break, but he has suffered nerve damage, which will make his recovery even more difficult. We have a long, hard road ahead of us, but we are both determined. All of his doctors seem confident that he will walk and drive and enjoy life again--eventually. We just have to be patient, because it will be months, not weeks or days, before he's feeling like himself once more.

I say this not so that you can all feel bad or take pity on us. Believe me, we have a strong marriage and we're both very stubborn. We'll roll with the punches life has handed us together. No, I say this because I was asked to answer some interview questions to give you a behind-the-scenes glimpse into my personal life. As I was reading over the questions, I realized that in many of the cases, what was true a month ago, isn't true now, and most likely won't be true in teh spring. My life is in a state of flux, and right now I'm just taking things one day, sometimes one hour, at a time.

There are a couple of questions I can answer, however, and I'll do so below.

Have you ever used an incident from your real life into one of your books?

All the time. I think a writer would be lying if they said that things around them in their everyday life have no influence on their stories. For me, I write as a form of therapy to deal with life's difficulties. I have a reoccuring theme in my stories where the main character(s) go thorugh a path of self-discovery and gain confidence in who they are as people. Quite often this involves shedding society's expectations of them and forming some new view of themself and the world around them. This is something very close to my heart. For me, it's important to stay true to yourself and to follow your passion. Life is too short to do anything else.

How many stories are swirling around in your head? Do you keep a mental list, a computer file, or a spiral notebook filled with the ideas?

I have too many ideas, and not enough writing time, lol. Whenever I get an idea, I write it down in a word document and keep it in a folder on my computer.

If you could give a younger version of yourself advice, what would it be?

Don't be in such a hurry, or sweat the small stuff. Be grateful for the little pleasures in life and know that everything will happen for you in its own time.

Are you going to any conferences this year?

Because of my husband's condition, conferences are out of the question for the first half of the year. I will be at RWA in July, however. This will be my first time attending. Hope to see you there!

What is your favorite holiday and why?

Thanksgiving, because it's about being grateful and family. It isn't over-commercialized like some other holidays.

What is your favorite food/drink?

Sushi is my favorite food. The drink depends on my mood. It's either a good cup of strong coffee, or a dry, red wine.

Hot summer days or chilly winter nights?

Oh, summer, definitely. My favorite summer activity is sitting out on my back deck with my computer and either reading or writing. I have a nice, cold drink next to me, of course!

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them in the comments section below. I'll do my best to answer them. :)

Every summer she drags her husband and two daughters to Maine on a quest for the perfect lobster dinner. In between those trips, she’s a chauffeur, a maid, a chef, an event planner, a hairdresser, a wardrobe stylist, a tutor and a sometimes masseuse.
