Get to know Seelie Kay today on #RB4U @SeelieKay #Romance

Welcome to Romance Books 4 Us, a place for all romance and all genres. We’re very happy to have you here with us today. First, tell us a little bit about yourself…

Please tell us a little about yourself...

I am a former journalist and recovering attorney. After more than 25 years in Lawyerland, I decided that writing was my true passion and left to start my own writing services firm. Eventually, that evolved into writing erotic romance—short stories about lawyers in love, with a dash of kink. I also ghostwrite books for other professionals.

What or who initially inspired you to become a writer?

I started writing as soon as I could hold a crayon and I never stopped. My head has always been full of stories and words. It was my parents and teachers, though, who recognized my interest and later, my talent, and found a lot of ways to encourage it.

Do you find yourself going back to the same inspiration for each story or is it always something different?

It’s never from the same source. I literally take my inspiration from wherever I find it, be it a news event, a conversation, a dream, or a memory.

When do you write?  Early morning? During the day sometime or all day?  After the kids go to bed?

I write when I am inspired. That may be in the morning or in the middle of the night, after lunch or dinner. I set no schedule for writing, so I am not bound by any rules. I find that eases the writing process because when ideas start to flow, they continue on for hours.

Do you ever see yourself as the heroine/hero or find yourself relating to them when you write a story?

All of the time. Different parts of my life, experiences that took hold, all play into characters and plots.

Do you have a special place you like to do your writing? Such as an office, a spare room, the dining room table, your couch?

I write in my loft. With three large windows and a skylight, it always feels like I am outdoors, no matter the time of the year.

As a reader, what types of genres do you enjoy? And do you think they influence the genre/genres you write in?

I like mysteries and thrillers, but I also read erotic romance. In fact, when I was in law school, my friends and I each purchased five romance novels a semester and then passed them on to others in the group after we read them. It was a great way to take a break from the law and relieve a little stress.  Many of my stories employ elements of a thriller or a mystery, so I am never far from the genres I most enjoy.

What is your favorite method of writing...as in laptop, desktop, iPad or the old-fashioned pencil and paper?  And do you plot out your story or go with the flow of your muse?

When you need a break or some time off from the trials of being a writer, what can you be found doing?
Baking or reading. I like to create new recipes, and of course, enjoy the results, or sometimes, bemoan them. And of course, while my new creation is baking, I usually pick up a book and immerse myself in the story.

What is your ideal romantic vacation?

A remote island surrounded by white beaches and crystal blue waters where there is nothing to do but enjoy the person I am with and the beauty around us, or a romp through Paris, stopping at patisseries and cafes, indulging in great food and wine, enjoying the ambiance of the city? Actually, what makes a vacation romantic is the person I am with, not the location. To me romance is about connecting, achieving that perfect melding of mind, body, and soul, being with someone you cherish who cherishes you.

#Guest Author #Interview w/ @SeelieKay #RB4U

Welcome to Romance Books 4 Us, a place for all romance and all genres. We’re very happy to have you here with us today. First, tell us a little bit about yourself…

Please tell us a little about yourself...

My name is Seelie Kay. I have been writing sizzling short stories about lawyers in love, with a dash of kink, since February 2017. I come by the stories honestly—I am a former attorney and my fantasies are drawn from real life experiences. Since last February, I have published six books, four of them collections of short stories encompassed in the Kinky Briefs series. In addition, The Garage Dweller—which is based on a true story—was released last July and A Touchdown To Remember came out last December. The President’s Wife is set for release in July and Kinky Briefs, Cinque is a work in progress.

Do real life events find their way into your stories?

Lawyers are rather quirky people. In my more than 20 years in law, I have encountered almost every type of personality in a wide range of roles—from respected attorneys and U.S. Supreme Court Justices to ambulance chasers and sleazy criminal defense attorneys. Some I loved, some I despised, and some I barely noticed. But all of them have been catalogued in my subconscious and they emerge when I need them!

Do you ever mimic family members or people you know when you choose characters? My characters are a bit like Tinker Toys. Each is an amalgamation of multiple parts. So each character has the attributes of many…I want my lawyers to be interesting and complex.

Do you find yourself going back to the same inspiration for each story or is it always something different? I find inspiration in everything, from a conversation with a stranger to news story or a dream. And when something strikes me, my imagination just takes off. Thank God for the recorder on my phone. I have a year’s worth of stories catalogued there.

When do you write?  Early morning? During the day sometime or all day?  After the kids go to bed?  I have two lives. In one, I ghostwrite for professionals, in the other, I write romance. In the former, I am very disciplined. I write when I receive the assignment. On the other hand, I write romance when the inspiration strikes me. Sometimes, I write for eight hours without looking up. Because I am so disciplined with clients, I have the freedom to run with an idea when inspiration strikes in my author role.

Is there any other genre that you would love to try writing?  If so, what is it?  True crime and/or detective stories. I love a puzzle—I was once a investigative journalist. Researching, digging underneath the surface is in my blood. I also want to write a biography, which I have already researched. I just need to carve out the time.

Do you ever see yourself as the heroine/hero or find yourself relating to them when you write a story? All of the time. I can’t deny that my personality and my life experiences emerge from time to time in my stories.

When you need a break or some time off from the trials of being a writer, what can you be found doing? Cooking huge meals or baking a luscious dessert. Turtle brownies are a favorite!

Is there anything about yourself nobody knows that you would like to share with our readers?  I went through seven surgeries in five years and the repeated anesthesia left me in a fog. I could barely think, much less write. It was a very frightening time. (I later learned it can take up to a year for anesthesia to completely clear out of your system after surgery and the combined effect can be devastating.) But when the fog finally cleared, my mind took flight and I began writing more creatively than ever before. I feel like I was given a second chance at life and I don’t intend to waste it!

Indulge in a walk on the wild side with these sizzling short stories about lawyers in love, with a dash of kink. From painting well-hung nudes at a networking event or thwarting terrorists intent on harm to finding love despite a chronic illness or exploring kink on a train, these lawyers pursue love with a vengeance. And while affairs of the heart may come in all shapes and sizes—a law school ménage a trois, a middle-aged A.G. and a law firm associate, and a new marriage suddenly threatened by a spouse long believed dead—these relationships thrive despite the odds. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and yes, the resultant loin heating might even make you blush, but in the end, you’ll run out and buy a set of handcuffs. Because that’s the only way to defuse the sizzle created by these hot, sexy stories.

The Power of the Cover with Author Seelie Kay today on #RB4U

The Power of the Cover
When I am looking for a hot read, two things push me toward the cash register: The cover and the blurb.  But the cover, oh, that cover. That can make me stop dead in the middle of an aisle, take a few steps back, and grab a book from the shelf. The blurb merely reinforces my first impression, or not.
There are all sorts of covers, of course.  For most authors, the trick is creating a cover that actually conveys the essence of the story inside and grabs the attention of the reader. That’s not easy. My publisher requires that I complete a form for each book.  I am asked about the key elements of the story and what I think would make an ideal cover. That information is submitted to a cover designer. Then, when I get the first proposed cover, we negotiate.  I tell the designer what I like and don’t like. I make suggestions as to what will make the content clearer or more appealing. And when dealing with books in my Kinky Briefs series, I make sure that the consistent elements are always present.
For example, Kinky Briefs is a collection of “Sizzling short stories about lawyers in love, with a dash of kink.” The stories are told from the perspective of a young female lawyer who toils in the backroom of a law firm. (As a former lawyer, that perspective seemed fitting.) The stories encompass everything from drama and humor to tragedy and redemption.  There are currently three books in the series and a fourth is on the way. So I need those covers to clearly convey that the book is part of a series, as well as communicate that the stories are told from the perspective of a young female lawyer, and involve romance and kink.
Here’s what we came up with. To indicate that the books are part of a series, the words “Kinky Briefs” appears on the cover in a consistent typeface, size, and color, with the position of the book in the series (Too, Thrice, Quattro) added. To convey that the stories are about lawyers in love, we added a tagline that includes the words lawyers, love, and kink. To communicate that that the stories are told from the perspective of a young female lawyer, we decided on the half-figure of a young female dressed professionally, but youthfully, not in the stuffy designer suits some older female lawyers wear. Finally, to emphasize that the stories include a dash of kink, an open briefcase with a pair of handcuffs peeking out always appears somewhere on the cover.
When the covers are placed side by side, it is clear they are part of a series. Then the blurb is used to reveal the variety of stories each volume contains.
As to the perfect cover, the one that made me stop in my tracks, take a few steps back, and grab the book off the shelf?  I have to give that to my latest novella, A Touchdown To Remember, part of Extasy Books’ 2017 Stocking Stuffing series. Although a generic cover is used for the entire series, the gorgeous half-clothed man donning a Santa hat, a man with a bit of stubble, dark hair, and incredible blue eyes, that made my eyes glaze over with lust and my heart go pitter patter.
If I saw that cover in a bookstore, I would buy the book merely to keep the cover under my pillow to feed my dreams at night!

A Touchdown To Remember
By Seelie Kay
(Release date:  12/7/2017)

It takes more than a hard knock on the head to keep running back Tim Wheezer Douglas down. When life pelts him with the proverbial lemon—a career-threatening concussion—he simply runs the other way, right into the arms of litigator Laura Adler.

When a second concussion sidelines Milwaukee Greyhound running back Tim Douglas, the rest of his life continues full-speed ahead. A sometime law student, Tim is faced with a classic Catch 22: Whether to continue to play football and risk a third and possibly life-altering concussion or quit the game altogether to pursue a career as a sports agent. He loves the game, but his priorities change when he meets Laura Adler, a sassy, sexy young attorney and rabid Greys fan. Their sizzling romp of a romance turns serious and Laura demands that he make a decision about football before she accepts his marriage proposal. Will Tim choose football or the law, and what role will Laura play in his future?
