The Social Media Circus ~ by Joanne Jaytanie #RB4U

Are you one of those people on the pulse of the newest social media site? It seems like every day there is something new coming out. I must admit, I’ve signed up on sites such as MeWe and Alignable, only because I get emails from friends asking me to join. I’ve looked at the sites – but I’ll most likely never use them. Especially if they want me to pay for connections.

And let’s not forget, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Quora, Snapchat, LinkedIn – just to name a few. My gosh, the list goes on and on. WhatsApp – what’s that? Google+- it’s still hanging on? Reddit – I have no idea. You could spend your entire day and night wading through the bottomless depths of the monstrosity known as social media.

What should you do? Ignore it all and hope it will all go away? Become an expert on every media app? Not me. I consider myself techie-less. I’ve come a long way from not knowing how to turn on a computer, but I’ll never be a social media expert.

Even so, I’m an author and the computer is my workplace. I’ve found my best strategy is to work with a core of social media apps. Meaning I limit myself to a few choices and try to get a handle on just those apps. Some I enjoy spending time on. Others I get on, get what I need done, and get off. Of course, there’s a downside to spending time on the apps I enjoy – I tend to spend too much time. Every bright shiny picture pulls me in. Every new recipe, how-to, repurposing, new releases—call my name. Have you guessed which app – Pinterest! It can suck you in for hours. But it can be a great place to make new followers and sales.

Did you know that over half of the millennial generation use Pinterest at least once a month. Over 90% of Pinners use Pinterest to plan their purchases – large and small.

I set up a new board for each book. I’ve even used my boards as storyboards for my WIP. There’s a lot going on in Pinterest.

And, because over 80% of the users are on a mobile device, there are certain ways to layout your ads, so that you get more views. I’ve started testing a few and find I do get more interaction.

Pinterest is also a great place to do research.

If you haven’t used Pinterest yet, you might want to give it a try.

Until next month...

It's Time to Party!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

WooHoo! A chance to celebrate is always welcome at our house and since Mexican food is a particular favorite, it’s definitely time to party. I can’t think of a single holiday that isn’t celebrated with a feast and today I’m inviting everyone to attend. I’m also inviting everyone to share a recipe that they have shared to Pinterest. Just tell me where to find it and I’ll follow you!

Not on Pinterest? Just tell me about your most memorable party snack!

Is there anything that’s more fun than a party where everyone contributes a favorite dish? As the hostess, I’m going to be making the Ceviche and Guacamole so that everyone can get started with a fun little appetizer while I’m whipping up a few Margaritas and waiting for everyone to arrive.

Years ago, a friend of my mom gave her a wonderful recipe for Ceviche that I’m still using. Hubby is quite the fisherman so instead of halibut or any other firm-fleshed white fish we usually just use fresh crappie. The lemon juice actually cooks the fish and is a fun, fresh way to prepare it.

Ceviche

1 ½ lbs. fresh fish sliced into small, thin pieces
1 C. lemon juice
2 canned Serrano or Jalapeno chilies (rinsed, seeds removed and chopped)
½ C. minced onion
2 large tomatoes, peeled, seeded & chopped
1 t. salt
¼ C olive oil and/or white vermouth

Place the fish in a glass bowl (metal will react with the acidity of lemon), stir in lemon juice and refrigerate for 4-6 hours. Drain and reserve the juice. Pour juice into another glass bowl and toss with all remaining ingredients. Strain and add this to the fish. Chill for 2 hours, garnish with avocado slices and green olives and serve very cold. I usually place the chilled mix inside another bowl filled with ice. You can use tortilla chips to scoop this up but I much prefer the mix on a fancy cracker.

Guacamole

2 ripe avocados, peeled, pitted and diced
1/2 white onion, chopped
1 chopped tomato
¼ C. cilantro leaves, chopped
Salt to taste

Tortilla chips or fresh veggies, for serving. This recipe is supposed to serve 4-6. I usually double it for that number.

***In a pinch, I’ve been known to use prepared salsa instead of chopping the onion and tomato and if you use the kind that already has cilantro, you don’t have to add that either. I do like my guacamole a little chunkier so I’m not real big on mashing it to bits J

Classic Margarita

Lime wedge, plus two lime wheels for garnish
1 T. coarse salt for glass rims
4 oz. Tequila
2 oz. orange liquor (Cointreau)
1 ½ oz. fresh lime juice (from 2 limes)

I did mention that I love a party where everyone brings a tidbit and you can manage to make a meal from appetizers. To add to the festivities today, if you have a Pinterest page with a favorite party recipe, please share. Anyone contributing a pin or a recipe suggestion will be entered to win your choice of either a Kindle copy of my erotic romance novella, NO HOLDS BARRED or the Romance Books ‘4’ Us, ENTICE ME boxed set that includes my story, I’LL BE SEEING YOU.

Let’s get this party started!

Author Marianne Rice dishes on #Pinterest today on #RB4U @mariannericeaut

Pinterest: An anxiety-inducing, time-sucking, fun, relaxing and inspirational tool.

Unless you’ve been living in the wild and don’t have access to the Internet, you’ve probably heard of Pinterest. I’m here to tell you…I’m addicted.

Wonderland. Time-sucking vortex. Writing inspiration. Recipes. Crafts. Fun. Shoes. Hot guys. Black hole. Feeling of inadequacy. Anxiety inducing. Hero inspiration. Relaxing…are some of the words used to describe Pinterest.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Pinterest, here’s the basic gist. You make a “board” and give it a title (desserts, quotes, writing tips, hero inspiration etc.) Your page can have as many or as few boards as you’d like. Totally your choice. When you search within Pinterest for whatever the heck you want to search for, click “pin” and select which board you want the image/website/link to go to. Easy peasy and organized for future reference. Most websites and blogs have a direct “Pin” link so you can click and pin even when not on Pinterest.

I started using Pinterest years ago as a way to save recipes I found online. At first I only had a “Recipe” board and quickly learned I needed sub categories to help organize the bazillion recipes I saved. I now have boards for desserts, breakfast, snack, main dishes, soups…you get the picture. My son was diagnosed with celiac disease two months ago so now I have Gluten Free Desserts, Gluten Free Snacks etc. My account got so huge that I made two: One for personal use and the other for the author side of me.

So how do I use Pinterest as an author? Research. I have a “Hero Inspiration” board where I keep pictures of beautiful men. I have a “Heroine Inspiration” board as well (not sure why I don’t have as many images there as I do in my Hero board. Hmm). I also have a board for each book, whether it’s published yet or not. If there’s a hero or heroine whom I use as inspiration or who looks like my characters, I pin them. I also pin quotes or other “things” that have to do with my books. And of course, my covers.

There are times when I’m working on edits for one book, writing another and pimping yet another. Sometimes I forget what my hero/heroine look like! I refer back to my Pinterest boards and sigh and stare and drool…and then get back to writing.

And, yeah. Because I have an itsy bitsy shoe addiction, I have a Shoe Porn board. And a Dessert board. And a Girly Drink board. It’s not all writerly stuff.

Is Pinterest a time suck? Heck, yeah. And I love it. Come visit me on Pinterest. You can follow all my boards or select which ones inspire you. Check out my board for Then Came You, which came out a few weeks ago (it’s FREE on Kindle Unlimited).

Thyme Wilde doesn’t make long-term decisions—until she falls in love with one…

Easily bored and quickly distracted, Thyme enjoys her freedom, so being a temp at her sister’s company is the perfect job. But when she takes a position as a nanny, she instantly falls in love with the five-year-old princess named Maddie—and just two months later, Maddie’s parents are killed in a plane crash, leaving Thyme in an unfamiliar role of responsibility.

Multi-millionaire architect Grayson Montgomery lives in the lap of luxury—but at a cost…

Being the sole heir of his family’s fashion empire and his father’s architectural firm, Grayson has never lacked for anything. But in return, he must stay subservient to the matriarch of his family—his grandmother—and date the heiress of their largest business partner. The only freedom Grayson has is his architectural designs, which are his true passion.

One day changes Grayson’s future forever…

A lawyer summons Grayson to Maine for the reading of the will of a woman he once knew. He doesn’t expect to be named the father of a five-year-old orphan. Then he meets his newly-discovered daughter—and her incredibly sexy nanny.

While acting as Maddie’s loyal nanny, Thyme develops feelings for her new employer that are more than professional. And after several passionate nights with Grayson, it’s clear the feeling is mutual.

When it’s made evident Grayson sees her as a convenient placeholder, Thyme must push aside her desires and put Maddie above herself—even if it means sacrificing her heart to do it.

Change Is Good...

I'm not the most media savvy author on the planet but then I've never claimed to be. I prefer spending my days at the keyboard making up stories and consuming enough caffeine and chocolate to keep three people going full speed ahead. Sharing on social media makes me nervous. How much is too much, how much is not enough? I've spent a very frustrating year, my second without a published story since I've started publishing.

I think there comes a time in every author’s life when they realize that it’s time to apply that wonderful “what if” question to their own career. About eighteen months ago I had torn the same manuscript apart more times than I’d like to admit when it suddenly dawned on me that I had a paranormal romance with a nice twist that was getting lost because I kept trying to make it fit into a structure that wasn’t working.

Banging my head against a wall had never been my style before so I didn’t recognize what was happening at first. By the time I did figure it out, I knew that more than the story was going to need revising. My entire career was about to change. Change is good became my mantra. Change also takes time and requires planning so I made a list and have been steadily working through it while finishing the paranormal romance.

I knew that the change was also going to require some investment of time and money. My first website was comfortable...familiar. It was my first foray into promoting my brand, a concept I didn’t really grasp the importance of until after I was in the business for a couple of years. Yes, as a newbie with one contemporary erotic novella under my belt, I don’t think I really had a concept of what I wanted as my brand. The only brand that concerned me then was writing a good story. That hasn’t changed but I have a clearer idea of how I want that brand reflected.

While I have a certain nostalgic fondness for my first website, it's definitely slanted toward erotic romance and it took about two seconds to realize that it won't encompass my new stories. It literally took months to come up with some ideas to give my webmistress so that she could get started. Trust me when I tell you that Dee Tenorio of Laideebug Digital is the most patient person on the planet. I love the new art deco feel and I can't wait to unveil it.

Not everything will be changing. For the past year, I've been taking RWA (Romance Writers of America) University workshops on everything from career planning to social media and the one outstanding little nugget of information that kept popping up was that in this day and age, authors need to make it as easy as possible for their readers to find them. I've come to realize that for me, keeping the Paris Brandon pen name instead of choosing another is best. I'm not a social media whiz kid. I can barely keep up with one pen name let alone two. I'd rather be writing.

It's hard to believe that 2015 is just around the corner but I'm ready for whatever it brings. Who knows, I could become addicted to Pinterest. Change is good.

Until next month,
Happy Reading!
Paris Brandon

Interview with Bestselling Author Sandra Brown

I’m delighted my first interview is with the prolific, bestselling author, Sandra Brown. I hope you enjoy getting to know her better. She’s generously agreed to do a giveaway, so make sure to read all the way to the end to find out how you can participate!

Q:        Have you got an interesting story to share about your journey to publication?
A:        At a writers’ conference I met Mary Lynn Baxter who owned an independent book store in Lufkin, TX.  She offered to read a manuscript. I sent it to her, she read it, and recommended it to Vivian Stephens, the editor who started Dell’s Candlelight Ecstasy line. She bought it and asked if I had another finished, which I did. I sent her that one, and she bought it thirteen days later. Lesson: don’t wait for a book to sell before starting the next!

Q:        Do you plot your novels in detail or are you a pantser?
A:        A combo. I know where I’m going, but not the route I’ll take.

Q:        Do you draw on real life experiences for your plots and characters?
A:        No! I enjoy “play like.”

Q:        Is there a genre you’d like to write in, but you haven’t yet?
A:        I think I would enjoy doing more historicals. I’ve written four, the last one being RAINWATER, and I loved the change of pace. Maybe one of these days.

Q:        What advice have you got for aspiring authors?
A:        Read, read, read. Write, write, write.

Q:        Which form of social media do you prefer for book promotion?
A:        I’m doing a lot on Pinterest because it’s fun to me. It’s more visual than other forms. I call it “working on promotion,” but I get hypnotized and, before I know it, I’ve been on there for hours!

Q:        Have you made any career decisions you regret?
A:        I wish I had started earlier.  I was 30.  But, if I had, I probably wouldn’t have been ready to try and make a career of it.

Q:        What are your top 3 guilty pleasures?
A:        “The Borgias” TV series
            Fritos
            Gin and tonic

Q:        If you could travel anywhere, to a place you haven’t been before, where would it be? Where have you been that left a lasting positive impression?
A:        I’d like to visit Scotland.  Most lasting impression – Afghanistan when I went on a USO tour in 2011 with four colleagues from International Thriller Writers. Certainly not the most scenic! Definitely the most arduous itinerary! But also the most memorable trip.

Q:        Which of your own books is your favorite, and why?
A:        I can’t pick one. Favorites include: ENVY because it’s about writers, and I had fun writing the book within the book. The TEXAS! TRILOGY because they were fun to write and the characters were so endearing. I miss them!  SLOW HEAT IN HEAVEN because I really liked Cash Boudreaux. LETHAL because I liked everything about it – setting, hero, heroine, and the plot.

Q:        What 3 things are almost always in your refrigerator?
A:        The aforementioned tonic! Limes. (Also essential for a gin and tonic.) Blueberries.

Q:        What’s your most romantic personal memory you can share with us?
A:        When I made the New York Times bestseller list for the first time, my husband, Michael, surprised me with a Lear Jet and several friends. We flew from Dallas to Houston to go to dinner.  Black tie, roses, champagne. Awesome night!

Q:        What are your non-writing hobbies, or what do you do to relax?
A:        I read, of course -- several hours each night before bed. I watch a lot of series TV because there are so many good dramas now, and I don’t have to be worrying about the plot! It’s some other writer’s problem. My husband and I travel extensively. We’re very social, but we like small gatherings or dinners out with good friends. We make family time for our two children, their spouses, and our four grandsons.

Q:        If you were stranded on a desert island and could choose one person and one thing to be stranded with, who and what would they be?
A:        I won’t commit to print the individual and item that immediately came to mind!

Q:        Tell us a secret that nobody knows about you and we’d be surprised to find out.
A:        I can’t blink my left eye independently.

Q:        What’s your favorite food?
A:        Chili and Fritos. (You didn’t specify health food! But I do keep blueberries in the fridge and eat them throughout the day.)

Q:        What’s your favorite movie?
A:        Out of Africa

Q:        Do you prefer oceans, deserts, or mountains?
A:        Forests. I like growing green things and prefer them blooming.

Q:        What trends do you see coming to the book industry?
A:        The trend I fear is losing readers. I don’t care what format one reads in, I just want people to read. I want to see parents cultivating in their children the “habit” of reading.

Q:        Tell us about your new book.
A:        Mean Streak goes on sale September 2014. I’m superstitious so a title is all I have for you at this time.

Q:        What’s on your agenda in 2014?
A:        My besties and I arrived at a motto for this year: If not now, when?  We’re gonna do it all!

It sounds like you have a lot of fun in store for you this year, Sandra. We wish you all the best with Mean Streak, and thanks for visiting us.
