BACK FROM NEW ORLEANS--INSPIRATION GALORE!

I arrived back in Orlando from New Orleans late Sunday night, the 27th of October, from a week of good food, good fun, and great conversations! My husband, Mike, and I attended the Undead Con and Anne Rice Vampire Lestat Fan Club (ARVLFC) 25th annual vampire masquerade ball. This was our third year attending and Anne Rice and her son, Christopher, attended this year. What a thrill!

Christopher is also an author and he served on a panel discussing his writing, his first paranormal book recently released and general questions about being an author. The first night for the Meet and Greet was held at St. Alphonsus Church. A large crowd gathered for food, drink and a chance to meet with Ms. Rice and Christopher. I had the honor of meeting her without a large crowd and shaking her hand. She’s such a sweet woman, so gracious.

The church isn’t an active one and is in need of restoration.
Recently it received historical registry status and the long and costly process to return it to its former beauty is underway. The picture is in the office space with some of the work being done where I first met Ms. Rice.

The next day was spent attending an author panel discussing paranormal books. After lunch, Mike and I took off and explored the French Quarter. We walked, a mile from the hotel, and visited a voodoo shop (I’m doing research for a work in progress) and went into a neighboring boutique with vintage items. For all those who love frilly things or steampunk, the shop owner was gracious to allow me to photograph these hats to show everyone. There were vintage Victorian carriage hats too which I took for Mike to use in a steampunk book about to be released in a few weeks. He had the final galley (worked on it in-between all our activities) and later that night he changed a short passage to fit one of the hats into his story. Kind of cool.

The masquerade ball took place Friday night. Over a thousand people were in attendance, but the highlight for me--allowed into the VIP area behind the “velvet rope” and to sit down and actually talk with Anne Rice! Her assistant took a picture, but we’re still waiting to get the copy. I did get this one of my husband speaking with Ms. Rice though. His mother's side of the family grew up in the same neighborhood as Ms. Rice and she told him she remembered some of his cousins. Talk about a small world.
Also, for any of you Young and Restless soap opera fans, Christian LeBlanc who plays Michael Baldwin, he was there too. The costumes were fantastic, the people were enjoyable and the party went until three in the morning.

The next day we did more panels, more eating of great food and phenomenal conversations with authors and a film producer. Mike and I pitched our screenplay we wrote from one of our co-authored books. He’s looking at it. Couldn’t ask for a better day than our last one.

Can’t wait for next year. Anne Rice will be there again, she said. Oh and CBS Morning Show crew was there and video-taped the event. You can go here to see the interview and some of the footage from the masquerade ball. Here's the link: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50158213n

So many more pictures to share, the cemetaries, French Quarter architecture, the ball, you get the idea, but don't have enough room. I got enough inspiration to put into my work in progress and a few more! Hope you enjoy and maybe next year, some of you might take a trip to the Big Easy and get your own inspirations!

Until next month . . .

VAMPIRES, WITCHES, ZOMBIES, OH MY!!!

It’s October! The month when Autumn begins to show her change of seasons, at least here in the United States. The month when we begin to think about the Holidays. The month when we think about the Halloween activities approaching. To some it ends the baseball season with the World Series. Football is in full swing, both high school, college and professional. And all the marathon movies on television with scary movies.

As an author, it brings those of us who write about the vampires, werewolves, witches, zombies and any other paranormal creature we can imagine to life. My first book was contracted in October which I consider as a lucky omen for getting a contract. I’m superstitious like that.

I never set out to write about vampires. I was a fan of the Dark Shadows television production back when I was in high school. That was the extent of my “love” and didn’t particularly care for the “horror” genre. When I decided to take up the pen, I wanted my vampires to be dark and edgy, but not scary and horrific. As I’ve progressed in my writing, I have to admit my heroes in the worlds I’ve created are a bit more “bloody” which is totally not me. I’ve even gone so far as to write my latest one with zombies. Oh, my goodness, that was a real stretch. Yuck! I thought. But, it was fun. Put the story on the screen to visually see those images—no freaking way.

Another “celebration” of the month of October I’ve come to participate in is the Anne Rice Vampire Lestat Fan Club (ARVLFC) Ball which takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana. My husband, Mike, and I attend the Undead Conference and the Ball and have a blast. There’s nothing like visiting the French Quarter and get a taste of the city and history. This year I’m doing research at the cemeteries and any number of voodoo shops. I’m in the middle of writing a vampire and voodoo story and I want to get more “hands-on” information. Of course, the story takes place in New Orleans as well. If anyone is interested in attending the four-day event and this year Anne Rice will be attending with her son (also an author) Christopher, you can go here for the information: http://arvlfc.com/.

Here’s a little snippet from my latest, A Vampire’s Bite of Flesh, the vampire and zombie one.

It took him several minutes, but he finally saw his target—a vacant place to sit and have a strong drink. He forced his way through the oversexed crowd of sweaty skin, strong perfume, and the tables with seated customers, advancing slowly to the bar on the far right side of the nightclub. He strode quickly toward his objective, an empty stool at the end of a long, curved bar. On the other side of the sleek wood counter, a man stopped restocking bottles of Vlad’s popular blood soda and stared in Dick’s direction.
Halfway on his trek to the bar, a woman slammed into him. Obviously drunk or high on something, he instinctively sensed she was human, not vampire. He pushed past her, cursing under his breath. What the hell was the world coming to? Vampires, zombies, and what would come next? Werewolves and the Easter Bunny?
Dick reaffirmed his reasons as to why he hated coming to Fang Shui. The dildos that worked there were no different than the types he dealt with when human. Nothing ever changes. Not even the predictable weather.
The first week of July in Florida brought the bitch heat of summer in full swing. Ninety degree days and seventies at night made for sticky situations when hunting for the zombies on the loose. Hurricane Chucky blustered through the Orlando area only a week ago. Eighty-five mile an hour winds along with spotty tornados ripped roofs off houses, damaged parts of the international airport, and the amusement parks suffered enough to keep them closed after seven days. Not that any of those problems affected him directly, but it did make for interesting news to take his mind off Noelle.
Buck Rogers’ Spaceship! Stop thinking of her.
Despite how he didn’t want to be at the meeting, safety at the bar was a welcome relief compared to the chaos he passed on the drive over. Traffic lights were still out at some of the secondary intersections, and people didn’t adhere to the rules of the road. Long lines at gas stations didn’t make sense, either, when the power didn’t work. Did all common sense get blown away with the storm? Was I that dense as a human?
Shaking his head as he grabbed the edge of the wooden barstool to stake claim to the valued real estate, he hauled himself up onto one of the last remaining seats. The place looked like the entire population of vampires and wannabe human groupies had decided to join in the rowdy behavior at the same time. A lot of residences had been damaged, as well as night haunts of the blood-kind. Hurricane Chucky wreaked havoc on the area in more ways than one. The scare of the zombies must be driving them here. What’s with the public display of sex? That’s a new one for this place.
Blooding and sex always seemed to go hand-in-hand in this new life he led, but Dick hadn’t seen such an overwhelming sense of laissez faire toward revealing what he considered a private matter. Was Vlad aware of this? Granted, he’d only been a vampire since last October. Halloween exactly, which was more like November first, but he’d seen a lot of action in those eight to nine months. Maybe this is a special event night at Fang Shui, like Karaoke Night. No, Stormin’ Chucky Sex Night!

Hope everyone has a wonderful October and write lots of stories about the creatures that go bump in the night!

I’M GETTING WANDERING FEET AGAIN!

Hello, Bonjour, Hola, Guten tag, Bon georno, Ni Hao, Shalom, Salut, Dia Duit, nuqneH?

Being a Navy “brat” and then marrying a career naval officer, I’ve been traveling or moving to a new base literally since I was born. I guess it’s in my blood now after fifty-odd years. Springtime tends to bring out my wandering ways. Since I practically consider myself a recluse, writing has a funny way of keeping me hold-up in the house, I have this uncontrollably urge to pack a suitcase and go somewhere.

I do have plans for a few conferences this year and this time last year wanted to go to RT in Kansas, but that didn’t work out. To all those who got to go, I’m jealous. But, next month I’ll be on the road to Lori Foster’s Reader Together. Yeah! This will be my third year and looking forward to meeting up with a few of my favorite authors and hope to meet others. It’s always nice to put a face to a name from the Internet. Next one will be the end of July for Fandom Fest in Louisville, Kentucky. Should be an interesting one. My husband and I planned to go for fun, but turned out we might be on an author panel—an interesting turn of events. We’ve been to Lexington, Kentucky, and have always wanted to go to Louisville, especially for the Kentucky Derby. Which by the way is this weekend, hint-hint reminder. Then, we have a few month rest and we’re off on the road again to New Orleans. Anne Rice’s Vampire Lestat Fan Club Masquerade Ball and Undead Con takes place the week of Halloween. This will be our third year as well and this year is the twenty-fifth ball and the theme is Lestat!

Anne Rice and her son, Christopher, will be headlining the events, along with many other authors in attendance. Anyone interested, let me know. Will be a great time, always is.

Oia, Santorini - Greek Isles
I did have one more trip, a cruise to be specific, but that fell through because was the same time as the ARVLFC Ball. Oh well, going to the Bahamas was nice but not that exciting since I’ve done that before. Now if the itinerary was the Greek Isles, I may have given up vampire fun in favor of the high seas and some ouzo. Darn!

All those scheduled road trips will probably keep the wandering feet syndrome down for the rest of the year. Then again, there’s always the Holidays. Actually, it’s probably best because I have a few deadlines for contracted books. Sure would be nice to get some “research” or “inspiration” for new stories. Guess I’ll just have to put some shackles around my ankles to keep me tethered to the house instead of wandering the streets. Next year? A little less on the conferences and more for personal fun.

Do you use your travels in your stories? Do you dream of visiting an exotic locale and use it as the setting for a book? I did start to create my first stories around places I lived, but since have ventured out and included those countries I’ve vacationed in stories. I think it has enriched the stories. What do you think?

If you see Louisville as a backdrop for one of my future books, you’ll know why.

Until next month,

Cynthia Arsuaga

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

No, I'm not selling real estate, although I spent twenty-one years in the business, I'm talking today about where we as authors/writers locate our stories.

My husband, Mike, and I returned from New Orleans on Monday from the Anne Rice Vampire Lestat Fan Club Halloween Ball and Undead Con. This was the second year we've attended. At the last minute, we were asked to sit in on an author panel with Sherrilyn Kenyon! We met new fans, sold some books and made new friends along with reacquainting with old ones.

My husband is from New Orleans and every time we go back, he likes to take me to places I haven’t been. Old hat for him, but for me inspiring. This time we went to the cemeteries and were rather cool. The mausoleums are interesting, especially the very old ones. The grave sites gave me more inspiration for adding details to a story I’m writing located in New Orleans. A paranormal. Vampires. A secret society. Voodoo. A ménage.

Do you tend to place your stories where you live, have lived or want to visit?

My answer is, of course! Mike and I co-authored two books taking place in New Orleans and we’re working on the third in the series which will occur at Mardi Gras. The Shifter Tales revolves around the story of Drake Martin, former assassin turned private investigator, and shape-shifter—a Yorkshire terrier. Yeah, it sounds weird, but he is a sexy shifter. At least, that’s what I think as well as everyone who has read and reviewed the story. But, back to New Orleans. We put quite a few sights into the books and plan to do so in the future. In a way, I’m hoping by reading those stories using the Big Easy as the backdrop will bring interest back to the city since the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. With that in mind, may have to do a story because of the recent destruction by Hurricane Sandy. Hmm, that’s an idea and inspiration!

Here’s the blurb and an excerpt (never seen before) from the first book in the series, Top Dog—Shifter Tales 1. Until next month, ENJOY!

Drake Martin is a unique shape shifter. Instead of transforming into a ferocious animal, he morphs into an eight pound Yorkshire terrier. Six year old Kady Hartley rescued him from an animal shelter. As "Precious" he was her "bestest friend" for twelve years, leaving when she started college. Ten years later they cross paths. He’s a PI; she’s FBI. Continuing to keep his abilities secret from her, he follows Kady as she pursues a case. Accompany them on an odyssey to New Orleans investigating human traffickers and watch the fur fly. To protect Kady, Drake remains in the shadows. For her sake he puts aside his loner life and accepts protection and assistance of the local shifter pack under its leader, the Sufi. The pack and Drake soon discover they have a common cause, leading to a bloody confrontation with the Russian human traffickers.

During the adventure, will Drake and Kady rekindle their loving friendship or will it become much more?

Oh boy!

EXCERPT:

This is one of the funny scenes where Kady (Drake’s love interest) doesn’t know his real identity and he has to keep morphing back and forth to keep that secret. Drake is given access to her apartment in order to install surveillance equipment while she’s at work. The property manager knows about the “dog” and is in the opening part of the scene until Kady comes back unexpectedly and Drake has to come up with a story.

Mid-morning the next day, Mr. Bowman let me into Kady‘s apartment. Certainly wouldn‘t do for anyone to know I had a key. Earlier I informed her about the deal I‘d made. Installation of the camera required access to her apartment.

“Where‘s the dog?” he asked, noticing Precious‘ absence.

“He likes to hide, I guess.”

“Not much of a watchdog, is he?”

Walking him to the door, I said “No, he doesn‘t seem to be.”

Standing in the tub with camera and tools in a leather belt, I began. An hour later found me still drilling the pilot holes for the cameras bracket screws. The sill had a steel plate. I broke two bits drilling three of the six holes. Sweating and cursing the foul fates bedeviling the project, I didn‘t hear the front door open. It wasn‘t until a voice tinged with alarm, cried out from the living room,

“Where‘s Precious?”

Kady!

“He‘s around somewhere,” I answered in a normal tone, belied by a frantically racing brain. “He was just here keeping me company.”

By then she was in the other bedroom searching with rising alarm. I stripped down and just before morphing shouted, “I found him. I‘m sending him out now.”

Kady‘s face lit up with a relieved smile showing two pearly white rows of even teeth as I pranced through the door stopping for appropriate stroking. “Don‘t scare me like that, you little dickens.”

I nuzzled her, wedging a black triangular snout into the space between arm and breast. She giggled. “Don‘t be so fresh.” Directing attention to the bathroom, she shouted, “I‘m taking my little guy for a walk.”

Ignoring the lack of response, she allowed me to lead her outside. Anxiety over the prospects of exposure made a naturally hyper terrier demeanor shift to overdrive, facilitating completion of the purpose for the walk.

While we strolled along the path, I wondered if I needed more drill bits. Did Mr. Bowman have a supply I could tap? Soon enough we climbed the stairs onto the covered, open air breezeway.

“I‘m back,” Kady announced throwing open the door and unsnapping the choker leash which thankfully had no collar. I scooted into the bathroom where Drake was supposed to be working and morphed back, turning in horror to see Kady entering the bedroom with an eye set on the bathroom to inspect my work.

“Don‘t come in,” I said, standing naked with head and one shoulder showing from behind the door.

Staring frankly at the bronze colored sinewy ball joint, she asked, “Why not?”

“It‘s warm in here so I stripped down, and my tools are scattered all over. I‘ll be out in a sec.”

“Is Precious in there?”

“Yes, he is. The little stinker won‘t let me go anywhere without following.”

“That means he likes you.”

“I guess I‘m in then.”

“More than you know,” she muttered under her breath, inaudible to human ears but not mine.

Watching her walk to the kitchen, I warmed inside. Preparing a lunch salad, she offered to share the trove only dieters or rabbits would appreciate, mentioning at least twice she frequently came home for lunch. I knew better, of course. The natural aversion to strangers roaming free through your residence brought her, or I dared to hope, it because she wanted to see me. Either way, I declined the salad. The wet dog food from earlier and Linda‘s stale thermos coffee conspired to make a cold, sour lump in my stomach.

“The job‘s done. You‘re all set,” I said as she finished the salad.

“Good.” We walked to the door. Opening it, she said, “I have to say goodbye to the Little Dude.”

My heart froze. “Oh, don‘t disturb him. He was sleeping so peacefully on your lounge chair.” I chose what she knew was the little guy‘s favorite spot to nap.

Doubtfully she agreed as I applied gentle pressure guiding us through the open doorway. After locking the door, she turned to me. “That was very nice what you‘re doing for Mr. Bowman.”

Peering down at the blue eyes rolled up toward mine, I knew the moment had arrived. “Would you like to go to dinner tonight?”

A triangular sparkle of white teeth and pink lips joined the indigo gaze. “I‘d love to.”

“I‘ll pick you up from work?”

Kady frowned. “No, I have to feed and walk Precious first.”

Oh boy!

“I have an idea. My day is on the light side. If it‘s okay with you, I‘ll get here at say five, get Mr. Bowman to let me in, and take care of the little guy.” My mouth still refused to utter the word Precious.

“You would do that? How wonderful.”

So much for worrying about a stranger rummaging through her apartment. I guess asking her out moved me into a more trustworthy category.

When the yellow Beetle whipped into its parking place that night, the pretty owner found me waiting. “Drake,” the driver said, “I didn‘t expect you here in the parking lot.”

“My car is over in guest parking. It was easier to wait here.”

“I want to look in on Precious. I haven‘t seen him all day.”

I took her elbow. “Time is short. We have a reservation at Pinchon‘s for six.”

Subtly resisting my effort to guide her in the direction of my car, she asked, “You fed and walked him?”

“Done.” I resumed urging her to the car.

“What about water? Did you freshen it up and fluff his bedding and fill the kibbles bowl?”

“Done, done, and done. Let‘s go.”

“Okay, I guess.” She said doubtfully.
