Please welcome historical romance author Anna Harrington!
Tell us a little about the kinds of romance you write
– I write spicy Regency romances with a modern feel. I create progressive
heroines who are strong, determined, and unwilling to settle and larger than life
heroes who are always strong and dashing. I also love to toss in dry humor and
jokes whenever possible. If I can make you laugh through your tears, then I’ve
done my job well.
How did your writing career begin? – I read one of
the Bridgerton books by Julia Quinn, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, and
became so intrigued by the Regency world she created that I knew I wanted to
tell stories like those myself. Three years and two series later, I still have
dozens of stories left that I can’t wait to tell.
Are you indie, traditional or hybrid? – I’m hybrid
now, with both trad published books and now moving into self-pubbing, which I’m
very excited about. You can take more risks and do all kinds of interesting
things with self-pubbed books, and I’m looking forward to pushing the
boundaries!
Philosophies or epiphanies on writing or reading you’d
like to share? – An author cannot fall in love with her characters. In
order to create good stories, you have to be willing to do things to those
characters that you would never wish on your own worst enemies—grief beyond
bearing, tragedy, loss, anguish, shattered hearts…You cannot turn the world
against them if you love them too much. Keeping a distance from the characters
and the story also helps when you have to revise and have to cut out entire
chapters, entire characters, or stretches of dialogue and description that you
labored to create. Having to let go of all that is so very hard, but it has to
be done to create a better book.
What advice would you give new writers? — Read. Read.
Then read some more. Read everything, not just within your subgenre but
EVERYTHING. Read it and then analyze it to consciously determine what works and
what doesn’t. Read good books, of course, but also read bad books. Sometimes
you can learn more by learning what not to do. Then write the book *you* want
to read, with characters *you* want to create, telling the story *you* want to
tell.
Favorite snack while writing? – COFFEE!! Followed
closely by peanut M&M’s.
What is your superpower? – The ability to always find
good parking spaces (I’m not very superheroic…I appreciate the little things.)
What is your spirit animal? – Hmm…I’m not certain I have
one. Perhaps a bird? I love to fly airplanes and to find all kinds of new
perspectives on the world. (And who doesn’t love to vacation in the south
during the winter??)
What color is your aura? – Emerald Green
Tell us about your latest release! – My latest is a
novella that’s part of Regency era trio with Grace Burrowes and Kelly Bowen
called NO DUKES ALLOWED, out on May 15th. Three heroines sharing a seaside house for
the season, three dashing heroes…three unforgettable love stories.
WHO DOESN’T LOVE A DUKE? Dukes have proven to
be nothing but trouble for Oliver Graham, Maxwell Thorpe, and Adam Morecambe.
Dukes have stolen their old loves, interfered in their business affairs, and in
general been arrogant nuisances. They’ve been so much trouble, in fact, that
the three old friends now live by a simple rule—No Dukes Allowed…in their
professional and personal lives. But when dukes once again start stirring up
trouble for the three men, will they be able to hold to that rule…or will their
hearts force them into contact with the very dukes they despise, in order to be
with the women they love?

Author bio -- I fell in love with historical
romances—and all those dashing Regency heroes!—while living in London, where I
studied literature and theatre. I love to travel, fly airplanes, and hike, and
when I’m not busy writing romances or doing my day job as a humanities
professor, I can usually be found in my garden, tending to my roses. (I have a
serious rose addiction – 30 bushes and counting. Wanna see pictures? Stop by my
FB page or Twitter account. I cannot help myself!)
