Guest Blog: Berengaria Brown: Why I Love---and Hate---Epublishing

What I love:
Digital publishing is so much faster than traditional print publishing. That means I don’t have to wait a year for the next book in a series. As an author, it means I can publish more books faster. Also, as an author it means my books are never out of print. If someone discovers me, all my backlist is sitting there for them to look through.

As a reader, nothing is worse than spending hours on eBay trying to find a backlist book from a favorite author, and seeing that the shipping costs will be twice the price of the book itself. That never happens with epublishing.

What I hate:
Pirates. I understand (but don’t necessarily condone) a reader’s frustration when all their friends in one country are able to read the latest book in a series, but they, in some different country, have to wait weeks or even months for it to be released. But I don’t understand the people who don’t even try to buy a book legally, but automatically go to a pirate site and download the book, which they proceed to give to all their friends, who give it to all their friends, who…

Honey, if no one pays to read this book, I’m a lot less likely to ever write the next one in that series.

On a related note, I’m gradually indie publishing books for which I’ve reclaimed my rights. Some are out of contract, some were with a publisher that closed, and others are books that I’ve decided weren’t a good match for the publisher who originally had them. Along with that, I’m bundling some books together and making anthologies of two or three or four shorter stories.

So now I have print books, audio books, ebooks, and self-published books. Which, I guess, explains why I write so many different genres. I like to try out everything.

BIO:
Berengaria is a multi-published author of erotic romance: contemporary, paranormal (magic, ghosts, vampires, fairies, dragons, and werewolves), futuristic, medieval, and Regency-set historical. She loves to read all different kinds of romance so that is what she writes: one man/one woman; two women; two men; two men/one woman; three men, two women/one man, three men/one woman…. Whatever the characters need for their very hot happily-ever-after, Berengaria makes sure they get it.

BLURB:
“Romance: From Sweet to Kinky”
Kinky: Dinner Delights: Krystal and Troy have been work friends for a long time and are seat partners at a company function. On the dance floor they realize it is time to take their friendship to the next level. There follows a night of hot and heavy sex. By the next morning they realize it is time to move up yet another level—to permanent lovers.

Sweet: Taming my Welsh Dragon: Anwen Llewelyn works for a Temporary Office Replacement Agency as she is the designated driver for her elderly neighbor, John.

Gareth Caldwell is one of the partners at her new job and he’s immediately attracted to her slender, dark good looks, but can’t understand why, when she is so obviously an incompetent worker.

Anwen doesn’t know why she is attracted to a man with a bad temper. And a partner is a long way out of her reach.

Hot: Tasting the Holidays: Marianne is addicted to all things Christmas. She's also addicted to the totally yummy James, but he just doesn't understand the importance of the holiday. Is he teachable?

I have a friend who always told me never put all your eggs in one basket. I have written everything from nonfiction to children's books to paranormal to romance. As for being published, same thing, but one thing I do know is that it's not fun to have your book pirated. I hope karma comes and bites them in their BEEP. Nice article!

That's good advice, Dorothy. Several companies have closed their doors unexpectedly, bringing grief to their authors.

Great blog. You make some very good points. I have always thought that it was good business for authors to be able to publish in more than one genre. I've followed authors because I liked their writing, not because I was necessarily hooked on Regency historical or paranormal. Before e publishing, readers could only find whatever marketing designated was selling. Now they can find practically anything they might desire to read and authors get a chance to publish wonderful stories that a marketing department wouldn't know what to do with it.

I've sent take-down letters to piracy sites and so has my publisher. They might take down the book, but the pirate just uploads it under a different name. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any end in sight.

Great post, Berengaria. I'm with you on the pirate stuff. Honestly, do they think they can steal forever? Writers need to make a living too.

I agree with you about epublishing and the pirates. I also agree to spread yourself around, epub, print, indie, etc. I write in different sub-genres and have been told I need to pick one and brand myself to increase my sales. But I truly like to write different sub-genres but always romance.

Berengaria,
I can't make a living writing because of the pirates. It's a shame. I liked your post.

Agree with everything you say, and of course hate pirates. Truly don't understand why something can't be done about them. We throw other thieves in jail, after all...

I enjoyed the post, Berengaria, thanks for joining us today. I like that your stories come in all flavors. Something to think about!

Hi, Paris,
It does seem impossible to stop the pirates, although there have been some notable successes, so I think we need to keep trying. Was it Hydra, in mythology who just grew another head every time one was cut off? But Heracles did kill her in the end!

I totally agree with you, Tina!

Cara, I've been told I'd make more money if I stuck to one genre as well. But I'm very careful to say what genre I'm writing in the blurb, so as not to mislead a reader. I just can't tie myself down to one thing. I love reading, and writing, everything.

I feel your pain, Sandy!
And I completely agree with you, Jean.
Thank you for dropping by, Rose.

It is very frustrating that pirates take away from all of us. I agree with Dorothy and won't put everything in one place. I'm also trying indie publishing on my backlist. Might as well!

Melissa, Indi publishing is an awesome new option available to authors now. I wish you well in your new venture.
