Guest Blog: Brenda Novak:Writing From Experience/Imagination and My Charity Auction!

Giveaway Alert: For one lucky person who comments by midnight 8 May EST, Brenda is graciously giving away a $25 gift certificate to her charity auction...details below.

As an author, I always get asked whether I write from personal experience. Sometimes I do—but more often what I create comes strictly from my imagination. While writing WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES I couldn’t help wishing I was writing from personal experience, however. Who hasn’t fantasized about falling in love with a gorgeous, rich and very successful movie star? Simon O’Neal is just such a man. But his life isn’t all roses. Thanks to a bitter divorce and losing custody of his son, he’s having a major and very public meltdown. It’s up to his publicist, Gail DeMarco, to get a hold of him and reverse the damage. But with someone who’s used to wielding the kind of power Simon wields, that’s not an easy assignment. The only way she can think of to improve his image is to marry him, and then things get really complicated because she can’t help falling in love with him, and that wasn’t part of the plan….

If this book doesn’t sound like it has a lot of suspense in it...it doesn’t. LOL My readers know me to be a romantic suspense writer, but I’m actually splitting up the romance and the suspense. WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES, out in August, is the first book of my new small town contemporary romance series set in the fictional town of Whiskey Creek (WHEN SNOW FALLS, Book #2, will be out in November). But I’m also working on a new suspense series that’s going to provide more chills than any of my other books. Although I don’t yet have a release date for HELL BENT, I’m having a blast writing it (and there will still be plenty of romance).

Annual Charity Auction
I’m also working on another project—this doesn’t include dreaming up stories but I’m definitely hoping it will have a happy ending. Ten years ago, when my youngest son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, I wanted to do some fundraising for research, to help him and everyone else in the same situation. I just didn’t how to go about it—or where I’d find the time. I had five kids at home and some very tight book deadlines (Ha! Sounds like now—except that some of the kids have moved out to go to college). Then I attended a silent auction at a local elementary school and realized that I could do a similar event on my Web site, where I could invite the people who visit me there to join with me.

So far, I’ve managed to raise $1.3 million, and the 2012 auction looks as if it might set a new annual record. This fundraiser is a shopper’s paradise with plenty of items to fit every budget, including trips & stays, one-of-a-kind jewelry, paintings, Native American jewelry donated by Mae Nunn, lunch with world famous author Diana Gabaldon (or Suzanne Brockmann!), and much, much more. And that’s not all. For those who are aspiring to become a novelist or to advance their writing career, there are AMAZING opportunities. Many of the most powerful agents and editors in the business have donated evaluations—some with the promise of a 24-hour response (which is unheard of in the publishing industry).

How does it all work? Just like E-Bay, except this auction is running at www.brendanovak.com.  Visit that URL http://brendanovakforthecure.org to register. The fun begins May 1st and runs throughout the month. When the bidding is over, you can pay with Paypal or credit card. In most instances the donor even picks up the shipping. And the person who places the highest number of bids over all, even if that person doesn’t win a single item, will receive a fabulous prize package including a brand new iMac, Your Name in My Next Book, and an autographed copy of WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES.

Check out the auction, and while you’re at my Web site, enter to win a romantic beach getaway to the Hilton in Destin, Florida!

NOTE: Go to http://brendanovakforthecure.org and check out what Romance Books R Us is offering as a gift for my charity auction!

What cool items have you won in past charity auctions? Do you prefer on-line shopping to brick & mortar shopping? Do you think this “wave of the future” will eventually overtake traditional fundraising?

Here's to making a difference!

BIO:
New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author, Brenda Novak, sold her first book, "Of Noble Birth", in 1999...and the rest is history. Many of her novels have won or placed in contests such as the National Reader's Choice, the Bookseller's Best, the Write Touch, the Award of Excellence and the Beacon Award for Published Authors.

Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are the proud parents of five children...three girls and two boys. She juggles her writing career with her children’s softball and soccer games, field trips, carpool runs and homework sessions.

When she’s not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually working on her annual fundraiser for diabetes research...an on-line auction held at http://brendanovakforthecure.org/ May 1st - May 31st. Her youngest son, Thad, has diabetes, and Brenda is determined to help him and others like him. She also enjoys traveling, watching sporting events and biking--she rides an amazing 20 miles every day!

BLURB:
When Lightning Strikes (releasing in August)
Welcome to Whiskey Creek- Heart of the Gold Country!

Simon O'Neal's causing trouble again. And it's up to Gail DeMarco to stop him.

Gail DeMarco left Whiskey Creek, California, to make a name for herself in Los Angeles. Her PR firm has accumulated a roster of A-list clients, including the biggest box office hit of all — sexy and unpredictable Simon O'Neal. But Simon, who's just been through a turbulent divorce, is so busy self-destructing he won't listen to anything she says. She drops him from her list — and he retaliates by taking the rest of her clients with him.

Desperate to save her company, Gail has to humble herself by making a deal with Simon. The one thing he wants is custody of his son, but that's going to require a whole new image. He needs to marry some squeaky-clean girl who'll drag him off to some small, obscure place like Whiskey Creek. . .

Gail's the only one he can trust. She agrees to become his wife — reluctantly. But she isn't reluctant because he's too hard to like. It's because he's too hard not to love!

Gosh - am I the first to comment? Hard to believe.

I have won some FABULOUS items in the past few years at Brenda's Auction.!!!

EVERYONE should check it out.!!

Brenda is an amazing person and a very good author. She takes the time to answer any questions and will go the extra mile to make sure things are exactly as they should be in her auction.

BTW - Hi Brenda - have I given your site enough of a plug??

I eagerly await May first each year to see what is offered, although this year has been tough, I have still bid on several items and will have to see how much higher I can bid on a few.

HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT DAY.!!!!

Thank you so much for helping us to spread the word about the auction and for the wonderful interview. My name is Danita and I’m a volunteer on the auction and your help in getting the word out generates more shoppers and visits to the auction website. We have added two new features to this year’s auction. We know that there are some shoppers who are unable to bid on items but do want to contribute to the cause so we have added a store which will allow them to purchase items and the proceeds go towards the auction the link is Brenda Novak’s Diabetes Auction Store. We have also added a blog which will have updates of the auction, items that are currently being spotlighted, live chats, and much more. The link to visit is http://bnauctionblog.tumblr.com/. Thank you again for helping us to make a difference.

Brenda, I'm happy to hear your fundraising for diabetes is ongoing and successful. I met you in 2008 at the Desert Dreams writers' conference in Phoenix. Authors were seated alphabetically at the book signing which put me two authors away from you and I thanked you then for putting a spotlight on diabetes, something very prevalent in my family.

The new series sounds fun and I look forward to Hell Bent. Love your romance suspense books!

Sandy said...

Brenda, I have bid at your auction many times, but have always been outbid. lol At least, I helped to raise the bid. Smile.

I admire you so much for doing what you do.

Hi Brenda!

I love your auction and have won something every year I think. Such generous and caring givers show up each year. I'm always amazed at the things we can bid on. So awesome! And living with diabetes, I can definitely say that your work is very much appreciated.

Your newest book sounds great! I can't wait to read it.

Thank you again for all you do!

Thanks for the great post, Brenda--and for all you do for diabetes research through your auction! I love online shopping--I've probably moved more than 50 percent of all my purchases online, and only see that increasing. Wishing you for a record-setting year on your auction!

Thanks for honoring us here at RBRU and I'm going to go check out your auction when I sign off here! What a great thing you're doing. I have many relatives with diabetes and this is a great charity. Thank you again.

Brenda. Wonderful cause to support. I am a type 2 DM, it's difficult for adults to maintain the right balance but much harder on children and their families.
Love your books and welcome to RBRU.

Brenda,
you are an amazing person and I'm in awe at everything you do. I love your writing and your auction is for a cause that hits very close to my home. My parents, and grandparents all have diabetes and I had gestational diabetes while pregnant, so I have a high chance of getting it myself. With people like you, holding auctions like this, we will get closer to a cure by the time it affects my grandchild's life.
Thank you for everything.

Thank you SO much for the warm welcome. I feel terrible that I couldn't make it by earlier. I'm in St. George, visiting my parents (who are having serious health issues). I never dreamed they wouldn't have any Internet! I finally found a spot in this city where I can "steal" some wireless. I'm sitting outside a closed Starbucks. LOL But I'm smiling at all the wonderful comments and support. THANK YOU!

Brenda said...

Ruth, you have given the auction an amazing plug!! With more people like you i wouldn't have to promote at all. LOL Thank you!

Brenda said...

Cara, we are already at $114,500--nearly $20,000 ahead of where we were after seven days last year. I'm hopeful that means we will break our previous record!! Onward and upward!!

Brenda said...

Rolynn, DD was so fun, wasn't it? And it was great seeing you there. I'm glad you have some great items on your watch list. I hope you win them and they bring you great things!

Brenda said...

Thanks so much, Desiree! That's what makes the auction what it is--people like you who both donate AND bid (and then help promote). You're awesome. And I'm so glad you like my books. That's for saying so.

Brenda said...

I can't wait to get HELLBENT out there, Polly. I'm anxious to get a release date.

Thanks for your comments on the auction, too. So many people suffer from diabetes--too many!

Hi Brenda -

Oh I love the premise of your new contemporary!!! :) It sounds so fun!!!

I'm very excited to be involved in your auction this year! I even got my mother to donate one of her original watercolors for the cause...

Thanks for doing all that you do to help beat diabetes!

You rock Brenda!!!

Lisa :)

Brenda said...

Babs, so glad your mother is helping to spread the word. It's joining together that makes us powerful. I hope we make a huge dent this year!

Brenda said...

LKF--So sorry that you have so many members of your family facing this disease. The statistics are alarming. Soon everyone will be affected--unless we can stop it. I'm hoping we can.

Brenda said...

Cynthia--Thanks for hopping over there. I hope you find many wonderful things you want and that you are glad you jumped in.

Brenda said...

Lisa, I have my eye on that watercolor myself. It's stunning. Thank you so much for getting your mother involved. She's crazy talented. Please thank her for me!

Brenda said...

Thank you, DeanY! The research my charity supports will help both Type 1 and Type 11--anyone who becomes insulin dependent (and many Type 11 wind up in that boat). Here's wishing you good blood numbers!

Brenda said...

Berengaria--Thank you for your support of the auction. I love it when people become yearly shoppers and supporters. It makes my job so much easier (than trying to find a whole new slate of donors or buyers).

Brenda said...

Diana, how is your friend doing? I hope well....

Your auction is such an amazing event. My sister was diagnosed with diabetes at age three and is still insulin dependent. Keep up the fantastic work! And the great books!

Hi, Brenda! I love shopping your auction every year--it's something I look forward to the rest of the year :) Our kids' school does an auction annually as part of its fundraising efforts as well--we've been excited to help support the school that way, too. My favorite purchases have always been signed books--it's such a wonderful way for us to be able to help support such an important cause! Thank you again, Brenda, and all your volunteers!
