You better not cry!
Better not pout, I'm telling you why....
Ca-ta-logs Are Comin' To Town!"
Yup, it's that time of year. The time when our USPS mail deliverers get to play catalog Santa and stuff their cars, trucks and bags with extra pounds of gift catalogs. The time of year when said catalogs vie with the monthly bills for space in our mail boxes. The time of year I make triple the number of paper recycling runs because specialty catalogs are spilling out of the baskets I use to hold magazines.
"Make a list, check it twice; gonna find out who's naughty or nice;
Ca-ta-logs are Comin' To Town!"
"They'll show up when you're sleeping, and then keep you awake,"
"They'll make you laugh, they'll make you groan,
Choose wisely for goodness sake!"
Choose wisely for goodness sake!"
One of the catalogs in our mailbox this week is divided into gift types:
Gifts they'll love
Gifts they'll use
Thoughtful, One-of-Kind Gifts
Gifts for Fun Times
Gifts With Unique Appeal
Practical and Colorful Gifts
The perfect catalog for the gift picker with an extensive list of recipients. Don't know what to get your boss? Go to the Practical pages. The friend who has gone above and beyond this year? Deserving of a gift from the Thoughtful pages. For that eccentric friend on your list, steer clear of the Useful gifts and go straight to the Fun pages.

I'm
a list maker but only for things I don't want to forget, not for gifts, unless it's something someone mentioned way back in June and I know I'll forget it come Christmas gift shopping time. I like to choose gifts
when I'm not trying to. That special something that brings to mind a
particular someone; an item they'd never buy for themselves.
"Ohhhh, you better watch out!
Better be wise
Better not buy too much at one time 'cause....
Moooore Ca-ta-logs Are Comin' To Town!"

Where's the catalog to order one of these?!
Imagine how many readers--zillions of shoppers--an author would reach if they could slip copies of a chapter or first page of one of their novels into a holiday catalog. Like the shopping supplements/circulars in Sunday newspapers. Maybe if I'm a good girl next year Santa will pencil me in on his Nice List and put in a good word for me with the catalog publishers. A person can wish, right?
How about you? Catalog shopper? On line shopper? Or do you brave the malls?

Just released holiday story, "Reeled In" in Highland Press's Christmas Kisses anthology
Oh, what a cute post, Polly. I used to get lots of catalogs, but so far this Christmas I've only received two. lol
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean I've been bad or good? lol
Oh, definitely good, Sandy. Lucky you!
ReplyDeleteEntertaining post, thanks Polly. I've been disappointed over and over by things I ordered from catalogs. Mostly I pick up gifts throughout the year when I spot one that's perfect for the giftee. Mostly wrapping left at this point, except for stocking presents. Yeah, my very grown up kids still want them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post, Polly. The catalogs are here!
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Polly! Once upon a time I used to enjoy perusing the catalogs for gifts. It was nice if I wanted to avoid the long treks to the mall. These days, the internet serves that purpose but it just isn't the same:)
ReplyDeleteMy grown up kids still like stocking stuffers too, Jean, but then, so do I!
ReplyDeleteRose, I got four in the mail today. The only one I really like is Pier One's catalog. They outdo themselves every year with such pretty things. The closest one to me is about 40 miles away-a blessing for my checkbook!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Paris, that shopping via the internet mall isn't in the same shopping realm as choosing items from a store. Especially from crafty quaint shops. Love that type of shop.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post! I know what you mean about the catalogs! I do enjoy reading them so that I can window shop for myself and others. I do want to make sure that I get something that my family wants and maybe something that they didn't realize that they needed. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree, Melissa. The catalogs are a good way to "window shop" before doing the real thing. Get a little preview of what's available and who on my present list would like what. I feel sorry for the recycle bin people though...in December there's so much more to haul off!
ReplyDeleteMy mailbox is full of catalogs...not just mine but some for my mother! I usually don't even look at them...do shopping online. I've tried to get them to stop sending catalogs, but they just keep coming - and some stores I haven't bought anything from in years don't get the hint.
ReplyDeleteRecycle bin loves them!
