Going to the Dogs
Hello and welcome back. I've got a new banner. I love the colors. What do you think? Thank you for stopping by today. As always, I hope you find something interesting in my words.
Do you have pets? Growing up, we had chickens, a bird, fish, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, dogs, cats, and rabbits. They were a part of the family, no matter if they lived outside or inside. In fact, my dad got very frustrated with the chickens because they never laid eggs and were always in the garage on the cars or up in the trees that he had them butchered and served them for dinner one night. That was the beginning of seven years where I wouldn't eat any chicken nor turkey.
Today, I have two dogs and one cat. Calleigh and Grissom are about ten years old and spoiled rotten. They love to sleep in bed with us and get away with a lot. But they really are wonderful. Grissom loves to snuggle with me when I'm writing and has appeared in one of my books.
Lil' Bit is the cat. I didn't plan on getting another cat. She was my childhood friend's cat. When he passed, no one else could take her so it was me or the pound. Since she was his best friend and closest companion, I couldn't see her in a pound. She's also spoiled but is not as lovable as the dogs. We are still learning each other's styles. She's very chatty though and loves to tell me stories all the time. I'm sure a cat will end up in a book at some point.
Pets have a habit of becoming pieces of stories. Our own and the ones we share with others. Their unconditional love and companionship get us through tough times. They give us someone to care for and shower with attention. It's only natural that they end up in our stories as the companions and sometimes a sounding board for our characters.
My latest release, Rescue Love, features four mischievous pups who were rescued from a puppy mill. My heroine is driving them to their new forever homes in Michigan and Ohio but along the way, she picks up a stranded cowboy on the run. Many of the puppies characteristics came from my own dogs throughout the years. After all, what better way to show my love for them! I hope you will check it out.
Blurb:
Dogs, Danger, and a Cross-Country Trip….
Nothing has gone easy in Alexis Bandit’s life. On a trip to rescue mistreated puppies and drive them to their forever homes, she meets up with a tuxedo-clad cowboy on the run and offers him a ride.
Jason Fields thought he had it all—a beautiful fiancĂ©e, a loving family, and great job—until he overheard his future father-in-law talk about arranging his murder. Now he’s on the run, without money, a phone, or a credit card.
With a killer on their tail, four mischievous pups, and many miles of highway, what could go wrong?

Good Morning Melissa,
ReplyDeleteI had a few pets when I was a child but none in my adult years. Basically, I'm not a huge pet fan so never went into having a pet. If I were to have a pet, it would probably be a cat. I like their independence and while they do demand attention, they can go off by themselves too. I like my alone time as much as the next cat does!
Never had the pleasure of reading your books, but I did enjoy reading about this new story of yours. Went over to Amazon to have a look at your other work and I see quite a wide variety of themes going on there. All looking like good stories too. I'll be taking a closer look at your work now that I have discovered you.
Enjoyed your post, Melissa. I call myself a crazy cat lady. I adore cats and can't imagine life without them. I still miss my beautiful black cat, Killer. She was the sweetest, most gentle cat. I have two cats now, Brewster, a medium-haired tuxedo who looks remarkably like your Lil Bit, except for his white paws and bib. Brewster is also very vocal, and very big. We have Tortie, a sweet, petite tortie, whom some uncaring person dumped, along with her kittens, in our neighborhood. Sadly, the kittens disappeared but I managed to trap Tortie. A rescue group spayed her, and we all thought she was feral, but we happily found out she's not. Both cats are indoor. Not safe to let cats out.
ReplyDeleteYour new book sounds great.
Great post, Melissa! I've always had dogs around and usually they just wandered in looking for someone to love and found a home with us. I lost the office puppy, Goldie a while ago and miss her terribly. Pets are family <3. I love the sound of your new book! Best of luck!
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen. I welcome hearing what you think when you do get a chance to read one of my books. I agree about cats. Bit doesn't really love laps. She's pretty independent but has her own quirks like wanting her food fed to her.
ReplyDeleteCara- I'm sorry about your Killer. Sometimes the best pets are the ones we didn't expect to get. I'm very fortunate to have Bit because she reminds me of my friend who passed.
Paris- I'm sorry about Goldie. Are you thinking about getting another? I wish my dogs loved to travel, that's one thing I'd do differently next time. These two are afraid of long trips in the car and so it makes our traveling challenging because we have to find someone to watch the dogs.
Melissa, I meant to say how wonderful of you to take Bit. Also, I chuckled at the picture of her in an Amazon box. I keep an old Amazon box around because my cats love to get into it. I like your new logo.
ReplyDeleteThank you Cara. I couldn't stand to see her go to a pound. She'd been with Tracey at the end and was his best friend. I put out boxes when I get them and she loves to go in them for a short time but if I leave them out, she's not interested. She has also jumped into the full of clean clothes basket. Just to make sure I'm covered in cat hair!
ReplyDeleteI love reading about pets in stories. Alas, we have not managed to replace our beloved fur-baby although it has been several years since she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I think that when it's the right time, we will find a new puppy dog, but our lives are a bit too hectic right now to contemplate increasing the family. Congrats on the new banner, it's beautiful!
