Have We Come Full Circle on Sexy Fare?

I always assumed that, like clothing, music and home decor, fiction genres functioned under popularity cycles. For example, from what I'm hearing in author circles, many authors who write erotica are creating more and more sensual versus steamy stories these days.  Add to this the fact that some readers have expressed a growing weariness for over-sexualized covers and you might reasonably conclude that the pendulum was swinging toward the sweet and sensual side of romance fiction rather than the hot and sexy side. Anecdotal evidence would seem to support a change in reader's tastes (Don't forget authors are readers too!).

But, au contraire, mon ami! Rather than fizzle out as I'd kind of expected, erotic romance has gone more deeply into the taboo with every passing year. Menages have become orgies of sexy fun featuring one woman with numerous men. Sex play has taken on a BDSM flavor, and storylines are getting more risque by the minute. (Sex with a dinosaur anyone?)

So I think it's safe to say that erotic romance is here to stay for a while. Like the always popular vampire, as immortal in popularity as he is in his fictional life, steamy reads still live.

But I do think the popularity of more sensual fare, like romance fiction of old, is increasing at the same time. And I'm happy for it. Because I believe sweetness and sensuality give romance an extra edge. And, I'm pleased to take part in its reemergence!

  1. It is sad if people are feeling like they have to keep passion and racy stories a secret. I love both kinds of stories and will continue to read both.

Your story sounds like a fun time! With the new Lucifer show on TV, I wouldn't mind being taken to Hell each year by him! *wink*

    All the best!
