What is Old is New Again

It's funny how things come full circle. When I first started writing, I fell in love with paranormal romance. In fact, the first story I ever published was Spyder's Web (through Loose Id) back in 2009. In my early days, I published several paranormal series, including my famous Kyron Pack, Immortal Hungers and Jungle Heat series.

Then it seemed that the market shifted. People preferred to read contemporary romances over paranormals, and as much as it hurt, I had to put my paranormal romances aside for a while and write what people wanted to read. For several years, I wrote exclusively contemporary romances. They did quite well, but I always missed writing those stories about things that went bump in the night.

I missed them so much in fact that when I got the rights back to several stories, I decided to start writing paranormal romances again. I'm happy to announce that in March I re-released Unholy Pursuits and plan to write more stories in this X-Files type of world in 2016. In April, I'll be compiling all of my Jungle Heat stories into one convenient boxed set where readers can save up to 45% off the retail price (you can preorder it here).

I can't even tell you how excited I am to be writing paranormal romances again. They are my first love, and it has been energizing to visit these worlds again.

So what does this mean for my contemporary readers? Never fear, I haven't given up on contemporary romances. In fact, I have two Kindle World books coming in June and July (you can read about them here), and will be finishing up my Black Towers Series with Lauren Hawkeye this spring.

Starting in 2017, it will be my goal to publish six books a year: three in paranormal romance and three in contemporary romance. That way there will be a little something for everyone every year. ;)

So tell me, do you prefer paranormal romances or contemporary romances. Or, like me, do you like to read them both. Tell me about it in the comments section. I'd love to hear from you!

Coming soon from Eirelander Publishing #RB4U #MFRWauthor

I have two new stories coming out in the next few months, after a very long absence from publishing anything. Both books are under contract with Eirelander Publishing, a paranormal novella called Blood Wine Kisses, and a short, sexy piece written with a friend of mine. We’ve done edits, and are awaiting any final changes to be made before the tale is ready to go into final production for release. I thought I’d give everyone a first look at the couple from Turnabout, the sometimes battling but always passionate Cade Maddox and Isabeau Renault. I hope you’ll want to get to know them better once you’ve met them!

Blurb: When Cade Maddox interrupts a meeting that is underway in the offices of Isabeau Renault, owner and CEO of Renault Publishing, the lovely Isabeau decides it's time to teach her security specialist who is the boss. It's time for a sexy bit of turnabout! Now Cade is at her mercy, and loving every minute of it.

Excerpt:

She rose and met him just inside the door, smiling when he lifted her hand and brushed a quick kiss across her knuckles. She liked Jason Adair more now than when they’d first met, his easy-going manner was genuine, his business acumen well-established. He was a nice-looking, affable man who kept things profession but friendly. “Would you like to join me for coffee, Jason?”

She led the way to the sitting area of her office, and went to the bar while he made himself comfortable. The soft creak of leather was accompanied by his first question.

“Have we sold all the tickets we anticipated for this Gala, Isabeau?”

She brought him his coffee and sat a short distance from him, turning to face him as she leaned into the couch. “More, actually. I just checked the figures and seating, the catering service has had to add several more tables.”

“Excellent,” he enthused, and tasted the coffee she’d prepared for him. “Perfect, you remembered.”

She smiled, then took a sip of her almost cold latte before answering. “I think this event is going to be well covered by the press, too. It’s looking like a million dollar gala, and once the auction is over, I fully expect we’ll meet our goal.”

“Are you still going to allow yourself to be auctioned off?” Jason asked, his tone light but layered with curiosity.

The door to her office swung inward, and she looked up to see Cade Maddox standing still as stone, only the glitter of anger in his dark eyes betraying that he’d heard Jason Adair’s question.

Isabeau stared at him, uneasiness sparking along her veins. “Cade, I’m in a meeting, can whatever you need wait?” Cade Maddox could foul her mood without even trying, though the honest part of her acceded it was because she was too aware of him for her own comfort. Cade made her conscious of herself and her life, most especially what it lacked without him.

Maddox smiled and strolled over to join them, dropping into a seat across from Jason. He leaned forward and extended his hand. “I’m Cade Maddox, Chief of Security here at Renault. I’m afraid Isabeau is not on the auction block.”

She gaped at him, torn between real surprise and rising irritation.

Jason Adair shook Cade’s hand and turned to look at Isabeau. She smiled, knew the expression was tight and strained. She stood, adding, “Mr. Maddox and I clearly have to discuss a few things, Jason. I’ll call you later, maybe we can go for a drink? I’ll have the final figures ready by then, as well.”

“I’d be happy to take you both out for a drink,” Cade interjected.

Isabeau froze, but she didn’t react more visibly than that. Jason stood, his puzzled glance moving between them before he leaned over and kissed Isabeau’s cheek. “I’ll call you this afternoon to set up a time.”

She nodded and watched as he left. The seconds gave her time to rein in the explosion of anger rocketing through her.

Once the door shut behind him, she glared at Maddox. “Just what the hell do you think you’re doing, Cade? I don’t need security to conduct meetings, so get out!”

“Where are we meeting your pal for this drink?” Cade asked blandly, unfolding himself from his seat in a fluid motion.

She stopped mid-step, a few feet short of her desk, and slowly turned. “We?” She repeated with acerbic sweetness. “We are not meeting anyone. I am meeting a colleague to continue the discussion you interrupted. I have no idea what you’re doing, but you won’t be doing it with me!” Her mind raced so quickly she didn’t have long enough to analyze precisely why she was so angry, only that she was. Cade danced to his own tune, and usually had damn good reasons for it, but she wasn’t part of his world anymore. She liked it that way.

“I’ll stop by at five and we can go from here,” Cade said as he reached the door, then left her before she could answer him.

Isabeau gaped at the closed door, then started to pace. Each step increased her anger at Maddox. They’d known each other for years now, and their relationship was never simple. Long after they’d gone their separate ways, he’d returned unexpectedly, with a book he wanted published. It hadn’t taken her long to work out that it was more than a book he wanted. He was in the middle of a covert operation, one he wanted her to stay away from. When he’d told her he was coming into her company as her security specialist, she’d laughed. His stubborn insistence on protecting her from potential complications with his current mission had ended in their battle of wills resurfacing.

What’s Wrong With That with Caroline Clemmons #RB4U #Romance @CarolinClemmons

Why do authors write? I can’t speak for others, but I write because I can’t help myself. ☺ Writing is an addiction and apparently there is no Twelve-Step program for authors. Even if there were, I wouldn’t want to participate. What’s wrong with that?

I love writing. As I pour my heart out in a book, I have a sense of accomplishment. Even when writing is difficult, I love the art. Of course, I’m human and enjoy when readers tell me they enjoyed my work. If no one saw my writing, however, I would continue to write in some form.

And to those who say romance fiction is fluff, I say again, what’s wrong with that? (Picture me with my hands on my hips and a confrontational expression on my face.) I don’t write to solve the crisis in the Middle East or to end world hunger. Those tasks are worthy but not ones I can tackle.

I write for readers who want to escape their problems or exhaustion for a few hours reading something entertaining that ends with a happily-ever-after. No matter what troubles weigh down the reader, he or she can be encouraged to know that seemingly unsolvable problems do work out for the better. And if his or her problem is one that cannot be solved—such as the approaching death of a loved one—reading a romance temporarily distracts the reader from the sadness facing him or her.

Again I ask, what is wrong with that? Nothing, at least in my opinion. Many times authors receive an email from a reader in which the reader explains a tragic situation and says, “I couldn’t have made it through without the help of your books.” To me, that is as valuable as any momentous award. Knowing something I wrote helped another survive a difficult time is heartwarming and personally rewarding.

Romance authors sell hope in a neat package of e-book or print. We will never win a Pulitzer, but we give countless readers a brief escape into another world where good triumphs over evil and love lasts forever. I am grateful to be a part of the romance industry both as a writer and as a reader. What’s wrong with that?

My latest foray into writing is GRANT ME THE MOON in the 8-book contemporary western anthology, COME LOVE A COWBOY.

All Tory Fraser intended was to show her high school history club students a local archeology dig. How could she know the excursion would involve a murder? Or that one of her students would be suspected as the killer? And she had no idea she would meet the man of her dreams.

Grant Grayson has taken over management of Grayson Ranch near Post, Texas to give his grandfather a less arduous schedule. A flash flood washed away an old talus slope on the ranch to reveal a prehistoric cave that is a Clovis site. Being a good citizen, he invited the nearest large university archaeology department to excavate the cave. When a gorgeous blonde high school teacher asks his permission to take her students to the site, how can he deny her? Especially when he is instantly attracted to her as he’s never been to anyone.

Tory and Grant are drawn in to the investigation to clear her student but unintentionally make themselves a target. Now they must evade the killer to celebrate their new found love.

Gardening and Windswept Shores Two by Janice Seagraves

Last year we bought a new home. It has three fruit trees.
At the beginning of March we had some wonderful blooms, which are simple too pretty not to share.
This top one is a peach bloom.

This one is a nectarine. My favorite fruit.
This last one is a lemon bloom. It smell terrific. :)
Better than any air freshener you can buy.

In my recent book, Windswept Shores Two, I have a garden mentioned.
WindsweptShores2_432
Blurb: Megan and Seth are finally rescued off their little island, but things are far from idyllic as they’re treated to one nasty surprise after another, which puts all plans of a wonderful future in jeopardy.

Will they ever get back together again or see the life they envisioned?

Except:

Handing him the loofah and soap, Megan turned away. Seth soaped up and started washing her back in small circles. “You know I love ya?”
She nodded.
“Liz really did sneak into the room, and I really was asleep.” He hoped she understood. He wouldn’t have brought her halfway around the world to then sleep with his ex.
Megan stiffened. “She wants you back.”
“I reckon she does, but I don’t want her. I only want you.”
After she rinsed off, she grabbed the soap and loofah from him. She gestured for him to change places with her. “I’m not one to fight over a man.” Megan worked her way from the top of his shoulders all the way down to his butt. “I never fought with Jonathan’s mistress over him. I told him to stop seeing her, but of course he didn’t.”
“Megz, I—”
“But if Liz gives me any more trouble, she’ll wish she hadn’t messed with me.”
Seth gritted his teeth against Megan’s hard scrubbing. “I reckon she will. Blimey, I know I am, and I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“No, you just lay there, letting it happen!” The soap and loofah bounced off the shower wall.
Seth turned, wrapped his arms around her, and pulled her against his chest. “I’m sorry Liz is giving you such a hard time. She’s a bit of bitch most days and a drama queen the rest. Why do you think I left?”
“Yeah, I kind of figured.” She sniffed and leaned her head against his chest.
“This is a right mess, eh?”
Megan sighed. “What are we going to do?”
“Once things get settled, I could get us a house, yeah? It’ll be a nice big mansion on a hill overlooking the ocean. In the master bath, the shower will look like your waterfall, and in the garden, we’ll have a pool and fix it so it looks like our old swimming lagoon. I’ll make us a pergola and more chairs, and you can weave the bottoms and backs. I’ll plant palm and banana trees. You can have a garden. We’ll pretend we’re still on our little island and make love all day long, eh?”
Megan looked up at him with sad sea-green eyes. “Seth, that sounds so lovely, but your father’s dying and your son misses you. You can’t leave. You’re needed here.”
He ran his hand down the side of his face. “Then what do we do, eh?”
“I don’t know.” She rested against him. “Just bide our time, I guess. But don’t blame me if you come home late one night and your ex is black and blue.”

Have We Come Full Circle on Sexy Fare?

I always assumed that, like clothing, music and home decor, fiction genres functioned under popularity cycles. For example, from what I'm hearing in author circles, many authors who write erotica are creating more and more sensual versus steamy stories these days.  Add to this the fact that some readers have expressed a growing weariness for over-sexualized covers and you might reasonably conclude that the pendulum was swinging toward the sweet and sensual side of romance fiction rather than the hot and sexy side. Anecdotal evidence would seem to support a change in reader's tastes (Don't forget authors are readers too!).

But, au contraire, mon ami! Rather than fizzle out as I'd kind of expected, erotic romance has gone more deeply into the taboo with every passing year. Menages have become orgies of sexy fun featuring one woman with numerous men. Sex play has taken on a BDSM flavor, and storylines are getting more risque by the minute. (Sex with a dinosaur anyone?)

So I think it's safe to say that erotic romance is here to stay for a while. Like the always popular vampire, as immortal in popularity as he is in his fictional life, steamy reads still live.

But I do think the popularity of more sensual fare, like romance fiction of old, is increasing at the same time. And I'm happy for it. Because I believe sweetness and sensuality give romance an extra edge. And, I'm pleased to take part in its reemergence!

This Easter, rather than dying...again...Esther's gonna resurrect some serious feelings in her sexy perdition guide.

Esther Mills is caught in Hell's version of ground hog day. Every year she's resurrected on Easter and relives her death, only to be escorted to Hell again. The one thing that makes her life tolerable is being escorted back to Hell each time by Lucifer, her sexy perdition guide. Esther and Luc share a hot crush. But for some reason he won't act on his feelings. So this Easter, Esther's going to make sure Luc can't ignore her any longer. She's going to take her life back...and when she's done with her sexy devil, he's not gonna know what hit him!

Using Your Ethnic Heritage in Your Writing

This past St. Patrick’s Day got me thinking about my own ethnic heritage. They say everyone is Irish on St. Paddy’s Day. When we were young, my husband and I did our share of partying on that day, although neither of us has a drop of Irish blood.

Last year, my husband and I had our DNA tested. There were no surprises. Our DNA results were close, both of us overwhelmingly Mediterranean with some West Asia (Turkey, etc) thrown in. My husband also has some Eastern European DNA, not surprising since his father’s family is from the Ukraine.

Some years ago I wrote an article about using your ethnic heritage in your writing. I decided to dig it out and update it.

You’ve all heard the old adage, “Write what you know.” We writers do research to learn about places we’ve never visited, or we make up our own worlds, which is sometimes easier. Regardless of what worlds we write about, we put a little bit of ourselves into all of our stories.

I hadn’t thought of using my ethnic heritage in my books until my third one. In the first two books I wrote (one published, one not), my heroes and heroines had Irish/English names, as do most characters in American books. Face it, we Americans have an easier time pronouncing English, Irish, Scottish and German names than we do Italian, Polish, French, etc.

When I decided to write my third book, I had an epiphany. Why not make at least one of my protagonists of Italian descent, as I am? Thus, Doriana Callahan, the heroine of my romantic suspense, Logan’s Redemption (Redemption Book 1). Doriana, named after a woman I know who is an immigrant from Rome, Italy, is half Italian, half Irish. Doriana has the quintessential Italian mother, loving, but intrusive, named after one of my favorite aunts. Doriana’s Nana lives in South Philadelphia and is a sweet, tiny elderly Italian woman who is a terrific cook, modeled after my husband’s grandmother and mine. I had such fun writing these people because they are so familiar and dear to me. I put in a scene where Doriana, her mother, her cousin, and Nana are making Italian wedding soup. Some of my cousins make wedding soup together every year.

I used my ethnic heritage again in my romantic suspense novel, Murder, Mi Amore, which is set almost entirely in Rome, Italy, with an Italian hero and an Italian-American heroine. I even included a whole chapter set in the small town in Abruzzo where my grandparents were raised. Writing Murder, Mi Amore brought back memories of my trip to Italy in 2006. Every bit of setting — the hotel where my heroine Lexie stays, the streets she travels, even the food she eats — are authentic, based on my own experiences. However, unlike my heroine and hero, I wasn’t chased through Rome by very bad people trying to kill me.

In Franco’s Fortune (Redemption Book 2), the hero is Doriana’s brother, and of course Italian/Irish. The heroine is a redhead with a French last name. In Luke’s Temptation (Redemption Book 3), the heroine is Doriana’s cousin, and is all Italian. The hero is Hispanic. Although I’m not Hispanic, I’ve written several heroes who are of Hispanic or mixed Hispanic/Native American heritage. As you can see I’ve gotten away from my ethnic roots at times, yet the characters I write about have ethnic backgrounds that I enjoyed researching.

In my novella, Capri Nights, included in the Entice Me: Luscious Love Stories Boxed Set, my hero, Alex, is from the Isle of Capri, Italy. I’m currently writing a story that will be included in a box set of international stories. My hero is, you’ve got it, Italian, from the town of Ravello on the Amalfi Coast. I’ve visited Capri twice, and I’ve visited Ravello also.

I’ve sold a dozen short romance stories to national women’s magazines, and I’ve used Italian and Polish names for many of my short story characters. However, a few of the magazine editors have changed my characters’ names to something more “vanilla.”

You have to be careful when using ethnic last names. The names must be easy to pronounce - like Russo, DiMarco, Novak, Morelli, Brioni, Cortese. You don’t want readers tripping over the names.

Writing my Italian characters is like writing about my family, people I’ve known all my life. I’ll use an ethnic name whenever it fits, but I know, regardless of ethnicity, the characters’ names must tell the readers a little bit about them. Try it when you write your stories. Spice up your characters a little flavor of yourself and your heritage.

Excerpt:
Nothing says damsel in distress like smoke billowing from the hood of a full-sized pick-up truck on the side of the road. And nothing wills a man to pull over like a nice curvy butt in a tight pair of jeans.

Cole Forester shot a quick glance in his rear-view mirror before he made the decision to stop and help, taking in the length of the woman’s blonde hair falling down her back. Much to his surprise, her beautiful golden locks almost reached her succulent ass, stopping short of her low-rise denim belt loops. He tamped down a smile, pulled over, and threw the shifter in Park.

Looks like my shitty day is finally perking up.

From Romancing The Vines to Living Between The Lines

One of my Pink SWAG bags won recently. Love the Duct Tape!
My new story is tickling me something fierce. I might just have to stay up all night and write, even though it won't be very good for me. But it will take my mind off some pressing things I don't want to think about. I write about danger and separation. When it hits close to home in the real world, I get chicken.

Not really.

Met some recent heroes who have had a big impact on me. One of my new friends told me about "wanting an intense relationship." He then went on to describe his search for true love and then uses it in his physical training (yes, really) - a thing desired for, like good health or a great body. I understand those things. I pursue a similar thing, but with my writing. I am not as dedicated to the personal health as I should be, but I have it in my spirit and desire to write the best stories I can.

He likened the relationship he was looking for, and ultimately found, like "drinking espresso and going to a horror film on a first date." Well, of course that gave me a great idea. So I'm using it in my new story.
Get your author alert here

Alex is one of those guys who can't get enough excitement in his life. He married Brandy the bimbo from a local Bunny Bar, marrying her in a double ceremony in Las Vegas with another one of his now-bachelor roommates, Ryan. Alex's marriage lasted only three weeks. Ryan's was a sticky mess. But after a series of near-fatal blind dates, he's about to have another one at the beginning of the book, and he's nervous. Like the doors to the Pearly Gates are going to be opened.

He's kinda right.

Alex is going to run head-on into a woman who is not only as much of an adrenalin junkie as he is, but surpasses him in many ways. He's about to find out what it means to be stalked, not in a dangerous way, but by a woman who is dead set on getting him as her prize and she does not understand the meaning of no.

I haven't finished this story yet, one thing I know for sure: their first date will be attending a horror movie, and stopping for espresso beforehand. He even went skydiving the morning of. Nothing about Alex's life will be the same until he learns to submit to Sydney, and just let her have her way.

Never written a book like this one before. I'm having the time of my life, and yes, that intense Fierce Writing With My Hair On Fire is better than anything else in life. And it takes my mind off from my loved one in harm's way.

All my books are listed here on my website here.  Won't you dangle a bit there and check them out?
