Will You Remember Me?
Like so many authors, I read all the time. I have a book
with me wherever I go whether it’s a doctor’s appointment or the vet’s office.
Nothing passes time like hanging out with some good friends or at least … a hot
hero or two. *g*
You see, it’s not the surprising twisting plot or the
amazing world the author creates that keeps me turning the pages (though that
is certainly important). It’s the people
in the story and their journey that propels me from chapter to chapter. I’m all
about the character driven stories. Of course I love to read romance. I make no
bones about it. I enjoy all subgenres of romance from dark paranormals to
action packed science fiction to cozy mysteries. But no matter where I find
myself in time, contemporary or historical, I want to fall in love even as the
hero and heroine are falling in love. I want to laugh and cry and ache for the
characters as life throws one hardship after another at them.
I’ve loved many books, but there are some characters I’ve
thought about long after I finished the book. Meggie, from the Thornbirds (Colleen McCullough), Ayla
and Jondalar from the Earth’s Children
series (Jean M. Auel), Zainal from the
Freedoms series (Anne McCaffrey) and more recently, those sexy vampires
from the Black Dagger Brotherhood (JR Ward), to name just a few. They just left
a mark on me that I couldn’t seem to shake even after the author offered me
their happy endings.
All writers want to create those kinds of characters. The
ones that haunt your dreams and sneak up on you while you’re doing the dishes,
random thoughts bumping over your synapses and making you smile or better yet …
sigh. And I’m no exception.
My newest paranormal romantic suspense, UNCONTROLLED BURN is
exclusively available as part of a fireman-themed boxed set, INTO THE FLAMES.
It has a cast of vampires and humans that I hope will worm their way into your
heart (and psyche) and keep you up late at night turning the pages.
Do you have any favorite characters that have stayed with
you?

Nina, I agree with you about the character-driven stories. I've read very well-written books where I couldn't relate to the characters. I didn't like those books. I've read others that weren't as well-written, but with characters I loved. Those are the books I remember. I've already pre-ordered your boxed set. Lots of good stories by authors I know and like.
ReplyDeleteIt's so true! If the character pulls you in and you begin to care about them you'll keep turning the pages to find out if they survive the villain or save the world or *sigh* ... get their "happy-ever-after".
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for having me. I love visiting RB4U!
I also agree. The character drives the story. It doesn't matter the era or how other-worldly the story is, the human condition should be relatable because we still love, worry, dislike or show ranges of emotion and we always have. Aside from my own, I have a few other heroes lodged in my heart starting with Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre, several by Kathleen Woodiwiss, and of course there's Outlander's Jamie Fraser.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining us today, Nina. Best luck. :)
Jamie Fraser is definitely a hero so worth fantasizing ... er ... I meant remembering. Yeah, that. ;) There's definitely nothing more satisfying than reading a book and having the characters hang around in your thoughts for a few days, maybe longer. I love that feeling.
ReplyDeleteHeroes were made to inhabit women's fantasies. I love to fall in love with the hero of the book I'm currently reading. So many wonderful hunks out there, all ages and from all ages.
ReplyDeleteI also have some characters that stay with me long after the books are done. I close the books and keep them on my keeper shelf to go back and spend time with those sexy few once again!
ReplyDeleteOh, Jean I totally agree. I want my heroes to invade my dreams! ;)
ReplyDelete:D Yep, I have some of those men I just can't give up as well ... and they're lining my keeper shelf, Melissa!
