I have nothing against the heart-shaped merchandise that's been in stores since mid-January, I just don't need it on my person or clothing. However, if I was into heart art and wanted a tattoo, the design below would be it. Love all those curlicues.
Fifteen years ago I went back to college to study to be a cardiopulmonary technologist, a career that assuredly will always have opportunities for employment.
The human heart is astonishing, a magnificent component of our bodies and like everything else that keeps us going, things go wrong with them and we don't always treat them as well as we should.

Working as a CPT and holding a living heart in my hands taught me to not take my heart beats for granted.
On Valentine's Day I think writers of romance stories should celebrate the fact that our works aren't constrained to one day but are visible and accessible to readers who want to keep love in their hearts all 365 days of the year. Isn't that how loving is supposed to be?
What special gifts have you been given on Valentine's Day?

New blog post every Tuesday:
What a great and needed job! Our unhealthy habits do more damage to our heart than one breakup!
ReplyDeleteI have a beautiful gem heart on a necklace that my husband gave me. I don't wear a lot of hearts but this one, along with the amber sun and silver moon, represent all the phases of our love!
I have a heart necklace too, Melissa. Can't remember the last time I wore it but it hangs with my earrings, always a reminder of the love it was given with.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fun, informative post. Like you, I love my dangly earrings but there aren't any hearts in my collection. I love your idea for a heart tattoo though, very graceful lines:) There have been lovely chocolates, bunches of flowers and some memorable dinners over the years but because he traveled for years, the present I've always enjoyed most was when he was home to celebrate the day with me.
ReplyDeleteFascinating post, Polly. I love the graphic for the tat - gorgeous. :)
ReplyDeleteParis, the dinners my husband and I have had out on Valentine's Day are my favorite presents. When we lived in Florida we celebrated the day at the same restaurant every year. Something about that made it more romantic. Memories from the year before I guess. And the one before that, and the one before....you get the idea!
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Polly. I am a lover of "danglier" earrings, too, and have an extensive collection of all kinds of neat earrings. I never thought about it, but none of them are hearts!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post, Polly. I, too, an am earring lover. I have many dangling earrings in my collection. At one time I had hand-carved hyenas. And parrots. I have sterling silver dangling heart earrings. And a sterling silver heart pendant. But I'm not one for wearing a lot of hearts. And I can't think of one Valentine's Day gift I've gotten. My husband may have given me some gifts early on, but after 40 years together, I can't remember. VD isn't such a big deal for me. I know that's blasphemy coming from a romance author.
ReplyDeleteOMG, I have to join in and say my husband gave me a diamond heart necklace on Valentine's too. I enjoyed your post Polly. I really liked your hart tattoo with all its curlicues.
ReplyDeleteGreat column. I too collect dangly earrings, but no hearts. I do like ones with bling, thought. With my middle name of 'Hart' I used to get a lot of silly comments on VD but not now. Either I'm too old or people are used to it.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Polly :) I love how the heart sign is universal, everyone understands the meaning as love. Maybe there's hope for us silly humans yet! I have none in my jewelry collection either, hmm, I'll have to hint to DH about that, lol
ReplyDeleteThe tat is gorgeous, right? I wonder..where would someone put something that ornate and large?!
ReplyDeleteHere's to Danglier Earrings, sans hearts!
ReplyDeleteCara, hyenas and parrots??!! Love it! My critter earrings are giraffes, chickadees, hummingbirds, dragonflies, no parrots but I have some with parrot feathers. Earrings are so fun and timeless. I remember where or from whom I got every pair I have (way up into double digits)
ReplyDeleteJean, I can imagine how people who think they're hilarious would make jokes about your Hart. Could be they're just jealous because you have more than they do!:-)
ReplyDeleteDenyse, I'll use this opportunity to say again, welcome to a great group of authors here at RB4U!
ReplyDeleteJacquie, with 12 days of shopping before VD you've got plenty of time to start dropping those hints!
ReplyDeletePolly, really enjoyed your post. Hubby and I treat each other to a special dinner, but no alcoholic beverages anymore. lol
ReplyDeleteHubby never gives me jewelry because he knows I don't wear it. I do like dangle earrings though. The danglier the better. lol
Other people have given me heart jewelry, but I never wear them.
Seems as though most of feel the same about heart shaped jewelry. I think it's more for little girls and preteens. There's a lot of cute heart themed faux jewels for young ladies. Way less costly than the real things they're going to want when they're all grown up!
ReplyDeleteA heart to have and to hold as we ride into the sunset together. That never happened because my love was lost to me suddenly but he keeps returning. Your post about hearts and Valentine's day recalled many happy memories, Polly. The pics added to it. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Charmaine. Memories are marvelous, aren't they? We can carry them weightlessly everywhere and always, without having to pack them!
ReplyDeleteHearts on crests...never really thought about that!
ReplyDeleteAll Valentine's Days are special since I married the man I love.
You find so many interesting photos to post...how creative!
