Recharging Your Batteries

Authors are by nature a solitary beast. We like to hide in our writing or editing caves and focus on our stories. In some cases, we have so many "friends" or "characters" in our heads that we are truly not alone and getting those people to stop talking is a challenge. But no matter how much we want or need to be alone as we are crafting our award winning novels, there comes a time when we must venture forth into the world. 

Conventions, author events, and Wild Weekends are important to authors. It's where we get to interact with readers, get those pats on the back and make lasting connections. It's also where we get to meet other authors, talk about the state of publishing today and hone our skills. 

I've had the opportunity to attend two very different events this year. Both were extremely valuable and have recharged my batteries.  

The Wild Wicked Weekend is an author event where connections between authors and readers or especially authors and authors are invaluable. At the weekend event, I heard talk about new collaborations and excitement over new story ideas. How things we experienced could be added to our story arcs. It was certainly more of a wild weekend.

The Mid Michigan chapter of the Romance Writers of America has a fun filled weekend in April that allows authors the chance to connect with each other and sharpen their writing talents. Last year's event was my first conference and I came away feeling refreshed and excited, ready to get back into my latest work in progress. I'd learned a great deal from the speaker on plot points and conflict which translated into my most recent release. 

Either way you go....

Sometimes, you have to get out and recharge those batteries so that you can get back to the business of writing! Leave the batcave and join the world around you.
