The roses were quite affordable--two bunches for $5.00. And if the vendor was in a hurry to skedaddle, they could be bought for less.
Handsome waltzed into my life via a friend. The attention he gave me was quite loverly, special compared to other guys. Sure, he'd taken me to dinner and movies. And he frequently brought me bunches of the roses. Totally romantic.
When we decided to marry, we pinched pennies to save for our dream house. And after our sons were born, continued to pinch. Which meant no roses. It was okay, I rationalized. We needed to put the money elsewhere. Occasionally, he gave me the grocery store bouquet for the usual special days. But they weren't the same.
And so it went.
He pushed a white bakery box my way. I'd seen that box many times and knew what it contained. Handsome loves, Loves, LOVES donuts. *snicker* I like them too, but don't eat many cause they like my middle parts.
"Oh, that's sweet," I said and opened the box. Definitely, not roses. Six glazed, six holes, and a lone vanilla cake. I gave him a huge grin and said, "You bought my favorite. Thank you."
With a grin that tickled my fancy, he said, "Aren't I romantic?"
Donuts are romantic? With a smile, I walked to his side and kissed his hair above his ear. "Yes, you are."

Oh, yes, girl. We take romance when we can find it. My hubby's never been big on flowers, either, though I've gotten 'em over the years, and they're sweetest when unexpected. But the most romantic thing he ever bought me was a piano. Yep. We'd been married about two years, I was having a long spell of "bad mood". I've played since I was like eight, but there wasn't a piano in my living room and with our finances, I sure as heck didn't expect one. Anytime in the foreseeable future, in fact. And there it was. Wurlitzer Console. Over a thousand bucks even in the mid-70's, at a time we didn't have a pot to p--- in or a window to throw it out of. Yep. That piano beat roses. Any day. And twice on Sundays.

Such a sweet thought on Handsome's part and no, of course you wouldn't want to hurt his feelings by turning the donut down because of your "middle parts". I get that. Sometimes my husband will still bring me See's candy truffles and I don't like them any more but I swoon and grin and gush because what a lovely gesture, right?

He doesn't 'get' why women like flowers--since they die so quickly, but last Valentine's day he got me a plant, and a balloon, and candy AND a dozen yellow roses.
