Guest Blog: Shoshanna Evers: Writing a Quick Release Trilogy

When my agent, Courtney Miller-Callihan of SJGA, sold The Pulse to Simon & Schuster’s Pocket Star imprint, the contract took an interesting turn. They wanted to buy The Pulse, yes, and two sequels to it—but since I’m not known for writing post-apocalyptic dystopian erotic romance, they asked me to start off by writing them a trilogy in the genre I already write in—BDSM erotic romance. And that’s how The Enslaved Trilogy was born—as part of a six book contract.

The deadlines were tight—six weeks to write each 50K word book, one after another. All three were written before the first, Enslaved, released on April 8th. The reason they wanted all three books in the trilogy to be finished was so my publisher could do what’s known as a “quick release trilogy.”

That means that each book comes out one after the other—one month apart, in this case. It gives readers a chance to read each book in the series while they’re still excited about the one they’ve just read. And it gave me a chance, as an author, to write the entire trilogy at once, so the stories intertwine and flow together (even though they can stand alone as well) and I never had to look back at my notes to remember which of my BAD Boys has a dungeon, which was arrested, and which one was married before. Trust me, that’s the sort of thing that can get confusing when you write by the seat of your pants!

It wasn’t easy, but I’m excited for the chance to do it. Enslaved just came out last week, which means in just three short weeks the second book, Enamored, will release. This is my first series with a “Big 6” publisher. You guessed it…The Pulse Trilogy will come after this one, in a similar fashion. By the way, for all you writers out there, The Pulse was written during NaNoWriMo: 2010 (all 75K words of it, lol). National Novel Writing Month is a great way to practice writing fast, and yes, those books can sell!

Okay, so now whenever you hear the phrase “quick release trilogy,” you’ll know what it means, and how it happens. Happy reading!

BLURB: Enslaved, Book One in the Enslaved Trilogy

From a red-hot erotica writer comes an original eBook—a sensual romp across the playgrounds of the unbelievably rich and extremely sexy.

Elisabeth Anderson has seen Trevor and his friends at the infamous Manhattan BDSM club WhipperSnapper, where everyone calls them the BAD Boys, for “Billionaire Arrogant Doms.” The BAD Boys—Trevor Brooks, Marc Wilde, and Roman Chase—are aptly named; they’ve made money hand over fist due to their aggressive investing at the Brooks Wilde Chase Fund. These guys are so rich they can get away with anything, or so the rumors go.

Trevor gives Elisabeth full reign of his estate in Westchester, letting her do as she pleases. He has only two rules. Rule One: she must obey and submit to him while she is living in his house. Rule Two: always answer the blue cell phone. She’s happy to oblige, because being with Trevor makes her want to obey, to love him the way he seems to be falling for her. But Elisabeth’s never been good at being the quiet sub; she’s feisty and gets off on the punishments more than she does by pleasing Trevor.

Elizabeth can’t submit to Trevor the way he needs her to, so his friend and business partner (and fellow BAD Boy) Roman takes her in hand. But love triangles can have sharp edges...and somebody’s bound to get hurt.

  2. Congratulations Shoshanna! I tip my hat to you; I wrote 50K in four weeks, then had to take a break because I was so sick of my characters! So for you to write AND edit everything in 3, six week successions.....WOW!

You deserve an ENTIRE bottle of wine, sweetie!

  6. Wow! What an amazing achievement! Writing at such a rate and knowing where exactly to stop and where to continue. Are all why completing a story which makes sense and keeps readers (us) intrigued is major work and you should be proud.
