Guest Blog: Sharon Hamilton: Warriors in Love

Writing alpha males can be tricky. These big strong guys are able to handle dangerous situations, and put themselves in harm’s way, on purpose. They are hard wired to rescue, to save the day. They physically can outperform anyone else, or will gladly die trying.

In romance, they also have to fall in love.  The kernel of the romance is the effect this love has on the alpha hero, how it changes him, but in a believable way. We can’t have a big strong guy suddenly getting soft. He has to be brought to his knees in love, ruined, but not broken.

In past books, I have written about vampires and dark angels, and I could make up all the “special powers” they have. In paranormal you create the rules of engagement and have fun with the special world we build. But, with the new SEAL series I’m doing, these are not paranormal alphas. They are human males, trained physically to the peak of performance.

Writing a contemporary hero in real-life situations can be a challenge. The brotherhood in the SEAL community has very definite rules. One of the sexiest things about them is that they don’t seek attention or brag in public. If they do, it’s done within the community, for the most part. By the nature of their work, they don’t seek the spotlight. I’ve heard stories of entire teams standing when someone outside the community has asked for the name of a particular individual who has done a particular feat.

A SEAL wife once told me, “I don’t know who did that, but I do know he’ll never have to buy another beer for the rest of his life.” The community knows who the heroes are. It isn’t necessary for the public to do so as well. It’s a tight-knit group, as well portrayed in the movie Act of Valor. The families and children grow up together, band together in times of tragedy, and celebrate together as only they can.

I thought it was significant that, in making Act of Valor, the directors had to use real SEALs to do the stunts because regular actors would not be able to duplicate the actions. What had started out as a training documentary then became a full-length feature film.

What works best in writing true alphas is when love rocks their world. We take the hero from his familiar surroundings, doing impossible things, and place him in a setting where he has no training. And in writing about SEALs, we have to show how he improvises, adapts to his environment and eventually overcomes the obstacles, without killing the heroine in the process!

I’m enjoying these wonderful guys, creating fictional stories that show who they are and why they are worthy of our praise.
