Infidelity's Gray Area by Adele Dubois

I walked a razor thin line when I wrote TEMPTED, the story of a mature heroine who fantasizes about sex outside marriage, though she loves her husband. The subject matter elicited stern warnings from my editor during the revision process, because married women cannot step their toes over the fidelity line in romantic fiction. Though Emily doesn’t technically cheat, TEMPTED takes place in that gray area between desire and action.

Does the ‘no cheating’ rule extend to the imagination? That depends upon whether or not you consider daydreaming about sex with other men acts of unfaithfulness. As my heroine becomes caught inside the technology of 3-D interactive television and takes an unexpected adventure, the line between reality and fantasy blurs. Her resolution of this state lies at the heart of TEMPTED.

So, readers and authors, what do you define as cheating?

TEMPTED by Adele Dubois

Summary:

Emily never dreamed that getting hooked on interactive TV would lead to so much trouble…

Is sexual fantasy cheating? If so, Emily’s got a problem. Though she’s never been unfaithful to her husband in reality, she’s found a new hobby with 3D Mental Image Projection. In the privacy of her home, she indulges her secret desires on interactive TV. What else is a lonely woman of a certain age to do?

When Emily wins a weekend getaway to mystical Isle de Paradises, she swears she won’t stray. But temptation lures her at every turn. Desirable men want her and beautiful women pursue her. When Paradises’ youth-restoring powers crumble her resistance, Emily is faced with an irrevocable choice. Her decision will forever alter her life and the fate of her marriage.

  1. Oooh, this sounds wonderful! Fantasy is healthy, as long as it doesn't cross that invisible line of daydreaming vs action.

  2. I've never cheated. I guess I don't even fantasize about it either. However, I am very tempted at reading this book.

    Thanks Adele.

  4. I think fantasy makes life more interesting because an unbound imagination leads to all sorts of creativity. But any kind of betrayal within the confines of a romance can lead to a very slippery slope.

Of course, the bigger the emotional risk the bigger the emotional payoff and that's why I read romance. TEMPTED looks like a very compelling story!

  7. Kudos to you for attempting such a difficult subject, Adele. When I've fantasized, it's always been about a perfect guy who doesn't exist, so I don't exactly call that cheating...just enhancing the moment. :)

  8. What a great idea for a book. And it doubtless was a difficult book to write. I never cheated, but fantasy is another thing altogether.

  9. Adele, I think you did a great job of walking that fine line in Tempted. It's a terrific book. You ask a very thought-provoking question. If you're married and you fantacize about a man you know and you feel desire for him, you're treading on a slippery slope. Don't know if it's considered cheating. A priest or minister might say yes. If you fantacize, as I sometimes do, about a made-up guy, a perfect hero type, not someone you know, I think that's normal. Many women have active fantasy lives.

We could go on and on with this.

  10. Tina--"Just enhancing the moment." LOL. I love that!

Thanks for the kudos. One of my critique partners told me I write "very complicated plots." Since she meant it as a compliment, I took it as such. I like challenges.

Jean--Yes, TEMPTED was a tough book to write. Thanks for your insightfulness. I've never cheated on my dear husband, but we writers are challenged with finding new ways to entertain readers.

    Thanks so much for posting!
