Interview of Author Nix Winter

Today it's my pleasure to present an interview of multi-genre author Nix Winter.

Latest Book: Redeem Me

BIO:
Nix Winter writes as Sebastian Blade and Faith Luna. He's a sociology major with delusions of a grad degree in bio-chem. He writes in all genres, pretty much.

Q: What’s the first thing you did when you received word you’d sold a book?
A: Depends on who I've sold it to. I'm afraid I'm a really independent writer. The last contract I signed came with an advance and so many conflicting feelings and upset... I asked to void the contract before I turned the manuscript in. I'm not saying there isn't a publisher that I'd love to be with... there are a couple that I'm really interested in, but for right now every time I sell 100 books on Amazon, I dance around and sing.

Q: What part of the book is the easiest for you to write? Why?
A: The beginning, of course. The middle is fun for me too. I have trouble making simple stories where there's really only one problem to solve. When you have multiple problems, the way real life does, they don't resolve all at the same time. It's easy to start stories, get to know characters...

Q: What part of the book is the hardest for you? Why?
A: ... but the end - I don't really believe in ends. I think stories go on forever and that HEA is like a commercial - it's there and it's shiny, then life goes on. Lives are not supposed to stop until mortality grabs hold and proves its power.

Q: Who is your favorite character in your book and why?
A: In Redeem Me, my would have a very hard time deciding between August and Corey. Both of them are very precious to me.

Q: If one of your books became a movie, which celebrity would you like to star as one of your heroines? Tell us about your heroine.
A: If Redeem Me were to hit the big screen, I'd want it to be animated by Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. I'd like Mark Hildreth to voice August and Scott McNeil to voice Corey. If that were to happen, I'm pretty sure that would add decades to my life.

Heroines... I think my best heroine would be Dr. Patrick Black. She was born in Dublin with the name Maire Quinn. She was born in 1896, to a mother who was probably just as surprised that Maire was born as that she survived. Left on her own for most of her life, she followed the neighborhood's shady doctor around until she hit puberty and he realized she wasn't a boy. So in 1910 she steals his medical books and runs away to London.

During WWI she steals the identity of a front line surgeon who really wasn't all that good or all that missed. It's not until after the Great War, when she's hiding out in China, continuing to be Patrick Black that she meets a gambler and rake by the name of Emile Whitehall. They turn out to be really good for each other and she even wears a dress when she meets his father .... and that's a really big push for her.

Another of my female characters, though she's a supporting character would be August's mother, Catherine Richards. She's also a doctor, but she's a very powerful woman, very assertive. Someday I'll write the story of her and Bon's romance.

Q: Do all your heroes and all heroines look the same in your mind as you “head write”?
A: Oh heavens no... I have several main root muses, but I can't imagine reactions and interaction with the world if I'm not in a very well defined character. Their back story is going to change them. Even something as simple as a small scar on the back of a hand or cheek can make a character self-conscious, change the reaction of other people to them, change the whole story. Hair color, birth order, their relationship with their dentist...everything has some bearing on who they are, so they can't look all the same.

BLURB:
Love's roots run deep in a soul. It's not just the beautiful blossoming of love when two people meet. This story spans Corey and August's lives. To know the way forward, sometimes you have to know where you've been. Law is not very good for redemption. To redeem his lover, August will have to venture into faith, which may be a little hard for a man who seduced his lover in his limousine the first day they met and nearly lost him after sex at a nightclub. For the first time in his life - love becomes more important than sex.

EXCERPT: WARNING: X-RATED LANGUAGE
August hadn't ridden a bike since he was twelve. All the scenarios he could imagine where an upset Corey confronted a group of racists ended badly.

The park was dark though, empty, peaceful. He rode right by Corey before he turned back. He coasted to a stop in front of where Corey sat on the bench, hands hanging between his knees.

"Hey Baby," August said casually.

Without looking up, Corey said flatly, "I'm leaving you."

"Yeah, I can see that."

"I don't want to hurt you. It's not about you. You're perfect."

"And you love me."

"Yes, always and forever."

"I love you too," August said, calm, no pressure.

"I know."

"Roman's an ass."

"Maybe."

"Where's your bike?"

"I don't want to talk about it." Corey looked up. One of his eyes was half swollen shut, his lip busted.

"Can I kick their asses for you?"

"No."

"Why, Corey?"

"Because I'm not good enough, not fancy enough for the people you know. I'm going to let you down."

"Fuck all of them," August shouted. He got off the bike, letting it fall over on the path. He knelt on the pavement and very respectfully reached for Corey's hands. "Just come meet Auntie. She's going to love you. There is nothing better about anyone in that theater than you."

Corey met August's eyes, wrinkled his nose. "Gonna take your peasant into the palace? With me dressed like this?"

"Hell," August said, tipping his head to the side. "You'll be better dressed then me." He stood up, took of his jacket, bow tie, untucked his shirt, toed off his black leather shoes. He threw one of his shoes at the lake, put his jacket around Corey's shoulders.

Corey's mouth dropped open. "You can't go to the theatre like that."

"Oh? Oh yeah?" August said, mischief in his eyes.

Corey tilted his head, winced from his eye. "Yeah. You told me... formal attire required."

"Okay," August said. "I'm August Richards V. I decide what's formal tonight."

August bounced on the balls of his feet and ran to the edge of the lake, splashing and running along the gravely beach. A raft of ducks freaked out and scattered.

"Auggie! There are geese! They'll attack you!"

"Come save me!"

"Auggie!" Corey yelled, but he was running after him. "Geese!"

Auggie caught him up, lifted him off his feet for a moment, then they both stood there ankle deep in duck pond and clinging to each other. "People are just people, Corey Anderson. Come meet my Aunt."

"Dressed like this, soggy with duck water?"

"Yes."

Anything else you’d like to add?
I'm sure I've got an opinion on just about everything. If someone wants to know something.. they should just ask in the comments and I'm sure I'll hang around and answer most questions :)!
Photo on right is from "A Trick of the Light"...not out yet!

Thank you very much for having me around today!

Interesting interview. I think it's cool that you'd like to see your book animated. It's the first time I've heard an author say that. Congrats on all your success.
