Book Trailers

I'm needing some opinions today.

What's your take on book trailers? Have you ever bought a book because you just loved the trailer?

Personally, I've seen some trailers that are just too cute, but in those cases I'd already bought the book beforehand.

I've seen some some pretty cheesy trailers too. Heck, I've made some pretty cheesy trailers. But that hasn't stopped me from making more! Since the moment I fumbled into learning how to make my first one, I've become addicted.

But seriously, do you think it's worth my time, or should I be out promoting in other areas? This curious author would like some input.

If you need more info to help you decide, here are my two latest trailers.

The first is for my sweet contemporary romance, A MAN FOR MIA by Linda Kage, coming out this Friday (woot!) from Black Lyon Publishing. And the second is for my erotic shapeshifter novella, CAUGHT IN HEAT by Miranda Stowe, coming out May 20th from Cobblestone Press.

  1. I like your trailers, Linda - I admire the fact that you made them!

As to whether they sell books - who knows? I've had three done. Two by the very talented Nina Pierce and one by the equally talented Dara England.

I loved them, but I haven't a clue whether they had anything to do with sales.

  2. Thanks Tina! Yeah, I can't figure out how well they help you with sales either. But they sure are fun!

  3. Linda,
Great trailers! As to whether or not they help sell your books. I don't think they hurt but it's difficult to track sales by them.

My most viewed trailer has produced fewer sales than my least viewed--but the variables, such as my advertising with online sites and a more recognizable online presence may have contributed to the better sales. I don't really know and I can't think of a way to track it.

I love making trailers because it's fun and a creative outlet that contributes to stress relief. If they sell a book, I'm happy. If they don't, I've relaxed and as a side benefit I think my blurbs are getting better so it's all good:)

  4. Love trailers and these are great. I'm looking for someone now to make me a new one since Nina is too busy writing to do trailers anymore. Anybody with ideas? I'm not computer literate enough to make one myself? Jean

  5. I decided not to make a trailer for Arctic Winds. I think that trailers can be a useful marketting tool but not a necessary one. And I think it's only worth the time if you make something top notch and have a marketting plan to use it. But I've never had one so who knows, lol. I'm certainly no expert!

I did really like the second trailer you posted.

  6. I've bought many a book because of a book trailer. I don't know if I'm normal or strange about that, though.

  7. Great job making the trailers Linda.

I can't say I've ever bought a book based on a trailer, but I do enjoy watching them. :)

  8. I love doing them as well, Linda. I can't say if they directly effect sales, though I have seen some wonderful ones (at leat three) that made me absolutely want to read that book. But they do help with that name recognition and networking, I suspect. At least, they open up youtube for both.
If you enjoy making them, then I say, why not? Its fun and it can't hurt. ;-)
