BIO:
Anna Markland is a Canadian author with a keen interest in genealogy. She writes medieval romance about family honour, ancestry and roots. Her novels are intimate love stories filled with passion and adventure. Following a fruitful career in teaching, Anna transformed her love of writing and history into engaging works of fiction. Prior to becoming a fiction author, she published numerous family histories. One of the things she enjoys most about writing historical romance is the in-depth research required to provide the reader with an authentic medieval experience.
Q: What’s the first thing you did when you received word you’d sold a book?
A: I was very nervous about publishing my own work, but decided I was too old to spend years submitting query letters. So I took the plunge, encouraged I must say by other indie authors on various yahoo loops. I thought I would be deliriously happy if I could sell 100 books in a year. I actually sold over 20,000 in my first year. Ecstatic barely describes it! And when I get emails from readers extolling the quality of my books, it gives me the inspiration to carry on writing.
Q: What part of the book is the easiest for you to write? Why?
A: Once I get the basic story in my head, I find the ideas seem to flow. I sometimes ask myself, “Where the heck did that thought come from?” I have often joked that my characters are telling me their stories from the past, though I am not a believer in that sort of thing! Because I am writing about members of the same family over successive generations, I have that basic framework on which to build the plot. History is so full of weird and wonderful events and characters, it is usually easy to pin the fiction to fact. For example, who in their wildest imagination could have made up a character like William the Conqueror?
Q: What part of the book is the hardest for you? Why?
A: My personality is such that once I do a thing, it’s done. So editing and doing things over is irritating! For example, I force myself to go through the manuscript with my Stupid Word List. However, I must say that I have found using my ereader for draft edits has made the basic job of editing much more enjoyable. I never seem to get tired of reading my own stories! Cuts down on the amount of paper too when you don’t have to keep printing out drafts.
Q: What hobby do you enjoy when not writing?
A: My interest in genealogy has influenced my writing career enormously. It’s the reason I chose to follow one family and its branches in my books. Ancestry and the search for roots intrigue me. I was born in England and always nursed a secret hope that I might trace my own roots back to the time of the Norman Conquest. It’s a forlorn hope, of course, because I am not descended from nobility. So I made up my own medieval family!
Q: What’s your strongest point as a writer?
A: I would have to say that a large part of my success has revolved around the fact that I can write more than one book at a time. I wrote the four books of The Montbryce Legacy at the same time and that makes for consistency. I am also prolific and once readers become hooked on my series, I can produce another book fairly quickly. I can spend all day writing.
Q: What genre would you like to try writing in but haven’t yet done so? Why?
A: I have started a contemporary romance. My hero and heroine are baby boomers. As a “boomer” myself, I wanted to write a juicy romance where the protagonists were not beautiful young people. However, I am not sure there is a market for it, and I am so immersed in medieval romance, I am perhaps afraid to break brand.

BLURB:
Ronan MacLachlainn seeks vengeance for the murder of his wife and unborn child, and the loss of his Irish estates. Nothing can stand in his way, not even love.
EXCERPT:
Ronan glanced up at her sharply. Guilt swept over him. He had forgotten Mary, his thoughts on Rhoni as he sang. He let go of her hand and came to his feet, his back to her. If he claimed to have been passionately in love with Mary, it would keep her away. But it would be a lie, and he sensed she would know it.
“My marriage to Mary was arranged by our fathers. She did not want to marry. She had a true vocation to be a nun, but her father forbade it. Mary was the kindest, sweetest woman. She was a good wife, and we got along.”
“Was she beautiful?”
He turned to face her, stunned as always by the golden hair, the wide brown eyes, the proud nose, the utter perfection of the woman before him who seemed to have no idea of her allure. “She had a beautiful smile.”
“Why not refuse to marry her?”
“Nay, that would have shamed her, and driven her father to find a lesser man. It was my duty to protect her.”
And in that he had failed completely. Even now his thoughts dwelled more on this Norman woman than on the mission ahead. He braced his legs and frowned. “I have tried to compose what I will say to your father to convince him to help me, but I doubt my pleas will impress him. I cannot see any reason why he might agree.”
Rhoni gazed beyond him to the distant peaks. “Neither can I,” she whispered sadly.
Unless I beg him on your behalf.
Rhoni kept her eyes fixed on the scenery, but did not see it. The powerful legs of the giant who stood before her on the edge of the precipice captured all her attention. Till now, her father was the tallest man she had known, but she was sure Ronan was taller.
If she pleaded his case to her father, her infatuation would be apparent. Ronan would be embarrassed, championed by a mere girl he cared naught for.
She wished he would stop staring at her. It was unsettling. The cold damp of the rock had seeped through her skirts. Her derrière was numb, her feet tingling with pins and needles. She tried to rise. He strode forward and offered his hand, pulling her to her feet. They failed her and she lost her balance, falling against him. He caught her easily and steadied her, his hands on her waist.
Mortified at her clumsiness, she arched her back to look up at his face. His lips were parted, his nostrils flared. Panic seized her. His grip tightened. He bent his knees and lifted her to his warm body. For the first time in her life, she felt a man’s hard desire pressed to her most intimate place.
Her breasts tightened, the nipples screaming to be caressed. To her consternation, her hips thrust forward to press more closely to him. Her feet dangled. She wanted to wrap her legs around him. She had lost control of her own body.
He bent his head and brushed his lips against hers. The savage growl that came from deep in his throat echoed in her breasts as he crushed his hard chest into her softness. His hand wandered up her spine and into her hair. He held his breath, his lips poised to kiss her again.
It suddenly seemed natural to open her mouth and flick her tongue over his lips. He groaned as he captured her tongue in his mouth, sucking hard. She tasted the tart apple he had eaten to break his fast, then his tongue was in her mouth, tasting her, thrusting in and out in a rhythmic movement echoed by their hips. His male scent mingled with the woodland aroma of the soap their Welsh hosts milled with fragrant herbs.
She could scarcely breathe. A maelstrom of confused thoughts swirled in her head, but she recognized clearly her own overwhelming desire for this man, and there was no doubt he wanted her.
He broke off their kiss, and set her feet back on the ground, panting hard. “Críost, I want you.”
She should have been elated, but the deep regret in his voice stunned her. What had happened had been caused by male lust, plain and simple. How often she had been reminded by her mother that men lusted for women they did not necessarily love. She pulled away from him, trembling. There were a thousand things she wanted to say, but could articulate none of them.
He raked his hands through his hair. “I apologize, Lady Rhoni. I should not have done that. I am not currying your favour to intercede on my behalf.”
Only ask me and I will. Tell me you love me and I will walk to the ends of the earth for you.

Something Borrowed and Something New?
No, I’m not
talking about wedding plans, but I am talking today about romance. For Better
or For Worse, I’m tackling the topic. Like surprise, this is a romance blog.
Kidding
aside, I got to thinking about creating new stories with new ideas. There are
so many books, and that’s an understatement, no one no matter how fast they
read can read everything available. With new authors coming on the scene in the
romance arena, it’s amazing sales continue for some of us. The pool of money
and readers has to be thinning. Which leads to we as authors trying to come up
with something new or borrow from the tried and true formula’s that a number of
publishers want, retract that, demand from we authors.
I started
down this path of writing four years ago and it has been quite a journey.
Honestly, I didn’t know what I was doing; I just knew I wanted to tell a story,
create a world where my characters bouncing around in my head had a home. To my
surprise, I sold my first manuscript and I actually got a sale, or two. After
the first one, I was hooked, addicted, call it what you may, but all I knew was
I had to write.
After I made
the commitment to continue, then came the promotion, networking and in-between
all the writing I spend hours a day doing, I had to have a life with my family.
Keeping the stories fresh, exciting and “new” seriously became a compelling
desire of mine too. I read, not every day, but make a commitment to read at
least twice a week. I don’t read in the sub-genres I write, so as not to
influence my writing. I also enjoy down time watching thrillers and mystery
movies to get my heart pumping and brain stimulated.
To come up
with a new idea isn’t always easy, so we tend to borrow from what is popular or
what interests us and put a new spin on the words, the location, the characters
and voila! We have a new story and hopefully it will sell. I know what I write
is basically the same, vampire meets human woman who have a bad guy to fight in
order to find their happily-ever-after. I like to think I add a little uniqueness,
sexiness and through my voice create a story worth reading.
In looking
for doing something different with my
vampires, I’ve created a world where my modern day geek wants to be a vampire and goes in search of one to turn him. I
wrote it like a television weekly show, one episode after the other with no
finality to each short story. Each takes place, time-wise, around a holiday.
The first one was at Christmas, the second released a month ago for Valentine’s
Day, and the next one due out is around July Fourth, then Halloween and back to
Christmas again. Eventually the shorts will be compiled into one book. Is it
Something New or Something Borrowed? I’m not sure, but the inspirations for
each episode have been from real-life and I enjoy stretching my creativity,
especially for the upcoming one. Think zombies and vampires and, oh my I can’t
give the spoilers.
In closing,
before I give a little snippet, do you borrow and tweak, or create something
totally new?
The
Misadventures of Dick Grewcock, Book 2 – A Lusty Vampire’s Valentine
BLURB:
Richard “Dick” Grewcock
is a fledgling vampire, turned by choice on Halloween Night. He’s a computer
geek, thirty-two years old, and thinks vampires are handsome, powerful, and
have women falling over them—everything he’s not. Problem is, after he turns he
doesn’t get any of those qualities. On Christmas he got the girlfriend of his
wishes, and weeks later his new life takes a turn.
Valentine’s Day he
meets with his maker and is made an offer he can’t refuse, but he has a date
planned with his girlfriend.
Noelle St. Nicholas is
Dick’s new girlfriend, and a little geeky too, they seem to be a perfect match.
She plans a night her boyfriend won’t soon forget, but he tells her something
she can’t forgive.
On his second adventure
to find love, Dick Grewcock gets a Valentine surprise he won’t soon forget.
STORY
EXCERPT:
Driving
along the back roads to the latest store should have been a piece of cake, but
for reasons he couldn’t explain, he should have taken the highway the GPS
suggested, not the alternate route. Twice, animals ran across the road causing
him to swerve to avoid hitting them. He’d taken this path thinking it would be
quicker and avoid traffic and lights, but no such luck. What a perfect example
for his life lately. Maybe that was the problem, an unlucky life—misadventures
through his new undeadliness. Yeah, I’m dead. As a doornail. At least
technically he was and only part of the time at that. He had all the working
parts as if he were alive, but now he had other attributes, some of which were
cool. He could move fast, and the queasy stomach stuff didn’t happen much. He
figured his body learned to adjust to the fast movement, and the nausea didn’t
happen as often. Hearing was tough to get used to. Hearing a fly fart ten feet
away was just disgusting, but his neighbors downstairs and toward the back were
no better. He’d swear they didn’t do anything except screw all day. Either that
or they watched porn instead of the daytime game shows or soap operas. Jealousy
was more like how he felt to be honest with himself.
Dick
missed Noelle.
His
heart ached.
Dick
had to do something soon, or he really would die. Again.
He
planned to see Vlad and discuss the matter after doing the upgrades to the
Kissimmee store. He’d have to go in and confirm the upload to Vlad’s office
computer anyway and could talk to his sire then.
Reprogramming
and setting up wouldn’t take a lot of time, two hours max. He’d expedited the
process rather quickly over the past several nights. After the last three
stores, he’d be on to another project for Vlad.
At
a little past nine o’clock his phone played the tone for a text received. He
glanced over at the screen and saw Noelle’s picture. His heart leapt from his
chest as he reached to pick the cell up and read.
I
miss you Dick. Can we talk?
He
stared at the screen for a few seconds and keyed in yes, but before he could
hit the send button a commotion came from the front of the store.
“Go
away!” Tony shouting from the front of the store. “I’m calling the cops. Stop
it. We’re closed. I mean it. I’m calling the cops.”
Louder
banging followed and muffled sounds of voices Dick couldn’t make out even with
his super hearing. Curiosity got to him. He pressed the send button, put the
phone down on the desk, and went to see who Tony yelled at. The strange prickly
feeling resurfaced, and his gut roiled like never before. “What the Friar Tuck
is going on out here?”
With
the overhead lights shut off, he rounded the corner and bumped straight-on into
Tony’s chest.
“Sorry,
man. What’s all the shouting about?” Dick asked.
“Crazies.
I’ve called the cops, but they are banging on the windows. I swear the glass
will break if they keep pushing against the panes. I can see them vibrating
every time they hit.”
“Did
they say anything? Why are they doing it?”
“Yeah,
I told them we’re closed at nine, and they kept on.”
“Maybe
we should call Vlad.”
“Yeah,
I agree, but I’ll tell ya, I ain’t sticking around if those dudes break in.
They have wild eyes and look like they’ve been dug up from a grave.”
“I
have to see this.” Dick moved by Tony and walked into the store, staying behind
the counter. “They must have left. I don’t see anyone.”
“You
sure, man?” Tony joined him behind the ice cream freezer display. “Good. I
didn’t sign up for this shit, and if the owner doesn’t protect us, I’m not
staying here. This job isn’t worth it.”
“Who
would try and knock over an ice cream joint? This store isn’t officially open until
next week. Maybe they were just kids playing a prank.”
“I
don’t know. They didn’t look like they were joking. And they didn’t look like
punk teenagers to me.”
A
crash sounded with glass breaking and falling onto the tile floor. Dick and
Tony jumped and turned toward the front of the store. “What the hell is—” Tony
tried to ask then added, “I don’t know about you, but I’m out the back door. If
you’re smart, you’ll do the same. Screw protecting the store.”
Dick’s
mouth gaped open, and he rubbed his eyes in disbelief at what he saw pushing
through the dangling, remaining shards of glass falling from the impacted
window. His voice caught in his throat and words come out almost incoherent.
“No way. There’s no such thing as—zombies?”
No
way.
Could what Vlad told him last week about vampires messing with blood donors’
brains cause them to turn into living walking dead mush heads be true?
Oh
Friar Tuck Almighty!

Congratulations, you’re published! Now what?
Getting published is one of the
most wonderful moments an author can experience in their career. After days,
weeks, months, and for some of us, even years, someone has finally said they
like your work and would like to publish it. This is a moment of a elation in
every authors life, especially if it’s their first offer of a contract. All of
the hours spent typing away while you hit delete, re-wrote and then went over
everything with a fine tooth comb suddenly seem all worth it, because now there
is someone out there that sees in your manuscript exactly what you saw. Getting
a contract offer for a book you’ve put your sleepless night and blood shot eyes
into is a huge accomplishment and one that every author should celebrate.
Once the excitement dissipates and
you start to come back down from that cloud you were riding on, it’s time to
hit mother earth, and for some of us the crash can be an unwelcome and unwanted
one. That is when the work begins. It’s hard to imagine that all of the hours
you have put into your work wouldn’t be enough, but sadly while you may be a
genius in telling your tale, you far from perfect. No author is, so don’t take
it personally. Even the most accomplished, most well known authors of the world
have work to do once the contract is signed. This is when reality will set in
for you. Writing the book itself will seem easy once you begin the task of
actually working with your publisher to get your masterpiece ready to see the
light of day.
Step one will be your cover
questionnaire. You may think this sounds easy, but for some authors it is hard
to put a vision you have in your mind on paper, especially if you’re the kind
of person who is known as a pantser and not a plotter. Pantser is an author who
writes by the seat of their pants, holding on for dear life as the story takes
them on a journey. Rarely do pantsers take the time out from writing to make
notes that will come in handy once filling out that handy little questionnaire.
Plotters are always much more prepared for the questions that pertain to eye
color and any other number of questions that make you flip back through your
manuscript in frustration as you wonder how in the heck you forgot so much
about a story that you were the creator of. The lesson learned is to take notes
when you’re writing your story. Even if it is a few chicken scratches on a
notepad, at least you’ll be able to get your questionnaire filled out in a
timely manner with little frustration.
Once you’ve done this and send off your information, you
can now sit back and relax. Right? Wrong! Now it’s time for edits. Bwahahahaha…
edits can be a nightmare and even a headache for some. But, the most important
thing to remember is that all of the edits you are doing are essential. They
wouldn’t have been flagged by and editor if they weren’t. Their job is to make
sure your book hits the shelves as shiny and sparkly as possible.
The important thing to remember
is that no matter how much work goes into getting a book out there, the end
result is well worth it. So, relax, take a few breaths and pace yourself because
getting published is one hell of a roller coaster ride. And it’s one ride that
many of us will gladly buckle ourselves in for time and time again.
