It’s only December 5th but
everyone in my neighborhood is decorating. I have one neighbor that leave their
fairy lights up year round but only light them during December. I can
understand the appeal of their year round statement when I think about trying
to take them down while it’s frigid out. Brrrrr…
I prefer to fill the house with greenery
and fairy lights, candles and the sweet scent of baking. Nothing makes me
happier at this time of year than to snuggle under an afghan with my tea and
cookies. Of course, there needs to be a book involved if I’m going to be really
comfortable and happy.
Of course, I always kick off the holiday
season by watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” with Jimmy Stewart and a cast of
what I consider to be Hollywood royalty. This is my tree-trimming movie, the
one that’s always on while I decorate the house. We’ve downsized quite a bit in
the last few years and the trinkets and ornaments that still have a place at
our house are the treasures that the kids have made, along with some cherished
memorabilia from family and friends.
This has been a hectic year and I’m
actually looking forward to slowing down a bit and doing some serious cleaning
and decorating, not to mention baking. Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter are
standards in our house but at Christmastime I drag out the recipe books and
make some family favorites like Kolachky, Pannetone, Tuscan Spice Biscotti, Spritz, Jam Thumbprints
and Chocolate Crackles. There goes my plan to give up sugar.
However you plan to celebrate the season,
I wish you peace and joy and all things wonderful. Have a safe and happy

Happy Holidays to you, Paris. My husband and I are empty nesters with our son 2500 miles away.
We don't see our families any more so Christmas has changed for us. I decorate but not as much as I used to. We have a small artificial tree now that our cat Brewster always manages to knock over. We normally have something Italian to eat Christmas Eve. We try to do the Seven Fishes whenever we can. I don't cook Christmas Eve. We go out or we get takeout. Our new Christmas day normal is we watch Christmas movies while eating appetizers I've made and drink wine. Then I make a turkey dinner. I've gotten to really enjoy our new "normal."
Thanks, Cara! I hope your holidays are wonderful. Having a laid back holiday sounds great, and appetizers and wine while watching movies is my kind of holiday:)
