The UH-OH word with RL Jackson #Writing #Craft #Romance #RB4U @bingereadRLnow

The “C” WORD

I remember when I was a young girl, I read many a romance that had a cliffhanger ending. Was I frustrated? Yes. But I was excited too and yearned to know more about these characters and what came next. I never dismissed an author because of it, and back then there was no way to leave a review, it was all word of mouth. Or in my case being thirteen, I didn’t tell a lot of people, because it was full of sexy scenes, I probably shouldn’t have been reading, to begin with. But, if there was a way to rate them, I would have given five stars no doubt.

Those stories turned me into a young virginal red head on a horse ranch, to a princess in London and everywhere the imagination could take a person, and yes, a lot ended with no Happy Ever After or with a cliffhanger situation for the couple to deal with later. When I became a writer, I knew that was the formula I wanted for my books because it’s what hooked me to reading in the first place. I became thirsty for more and wasn’t satisfied until I cracked open the next book and took a long sip. I think the only instance that a cliffhanger wouldn’t work, is if the story never answers or solves at least some of the problems in the book. For my own, my characters deal with a lot of personal baggage, but they also have external forces working against them. Once those problems are addressed, something happens that leaves them in the balance, but the question of whether or not they’d find themselves together at all, was answered. Along with some other satisfying situations as well.

Did I get a few angry responses? Yep, but only a few, and a lot of them raved about the story and left nice ratings, so I felt I’d done my job. It kind of hurts to see a lot of people complain that no HEA isn’t a romance because that is not true in the least. How many relationships or situations in real life end abruptly and never get a satisfying resolution until later? A lot! And I get it, everyone wants a journey different from reality, but having a little of that in fantasy land, doesn’t hurt anyone, in fact, I think it makes the story more believable.

I hope more readers decide to give all books a chance regardless of the ending because there are a ton of awesome stories just waiting to be discovered.

Side Note: I do however agree that making any reader wait an absorbent amount of time to find out “who dun it” is cruel and they should be meant to wear a scarlet letter on their chest. I think the letter “C” would be perfect but you can pick the word of your choosing, ha ha.

A year after being left at the altar, headstrong E.R Nurse, Lana McKenzie is finally piecing her life back together. Tired of dealing with seeing her ex and his new girlfriend at every turn, she longs for blissful solitude and can't wait to enjoy a peaceful vacation alone in the mountains. However, her plans go awry when a rude stranger literally crashes himself into her life and mind.

Handsome, wealthy, and troubled, Kayden Capshaw is struggling with the death of his brother, while also trying to escape the claws of his controlling mother. In his grief, the last thing Kayden wants to deal with is the fallout from his last run-in with the law. Yet, he also longs to get to know the woman now snowed in with him at the house on the hill.

The ice between them thaws every minute they spend together, and they find that they have more in common than they realize. Will they find a way to make it through, or will it all, like the snow, melt away?

I think that my favorite stories are the ones where I'm invested in the characters so even with a cliffhanger, I want to know more. I need to know more. I'm hooked.

Good luck with your latest book!

Your new book sounds great. Personally, I crave HEA and don't want a cliffhanger ending but I acknowledge others might not agree. I'm a character-driven reader. If I love the characters I usually love the story.

I agree Melissa. If a story is awesome I'm in. Just don't "cancel ththe season" per say and never give me an ending. -RL
