Our cat Ninja
In honor of Halloween which will be here in just a few days, I’ve listed 13 spooky sounds.
1. The hiss of a cat.
2. The howl of a wolf.
3. The squeak of a mouse, or is it a rat?
4. A creaking door when you’re alone.
5. The sound of something being dragged outside.
6. A long low moan, but you’re not sure if it’s the wind or a person.
7. Wind, whistling around the corner of a building.
8. The crack of thunder right over the top of the house.
9. Noise on a staircase and you know you’re alone, or do you?
10. The knock on the door, and then the impatient jiggle of the door knob, but when you answer it there’s no one there
11. Scuttling noise that makes the hair stand on the back of your neck, and you don’t want to turn to look because you’re afraid of what you’ll see.
12. It’s late at night and you’re cuddled up in your nice warm bed, then you hear a footstep . . . in your bedroom behind you.
13. Someone one is whispering your name in a really creepy voice. You hurry to the door to give your friend a piece of your mind for scaring you, but when you open the door you see . . .
What noise really scares you?

Any of these when there's no one else around could get to me. Except maybe kitty meows.
Hi Alice,
Well, that wasn't a cute little kitty meow but a mean hiss.
But I anything can be scary when your by yourself.
Janice~
The sound of someone breathing...you hear it, but you can't see them.
Great post, Janice. :)
The scratching on the wall thing. Once we had a mouse and it did that in the wee hours of the morning. It freaked me out even though I knew it was a critter.
I think I'm more unsettled by absolute silence than by any noise, nowadays... LOL!
For me, the sound of wind whistling around the corner of a building is wonderful! I don't know why, but I love it!
But unidentifiable animal sounds? Yeah, that'll creep me out!
Happy TT!
I have one more scary thing to mention. When I was a kid, there was a tree right outside our bedroom window. When it was windy and the tree was bare of leaves it would scratch against the house. I would look and the branches looked like someone trying to get into our house. I would cover my head with the blankets. So creepy and scary. lol
Clever post, Janice. The sounds of a creaking floor when I'm alone or wind whipping during a storm make me nervous.
Best of luck with your release.

Boy, context is everything when it comes to sound, isn't it? Everything is creepier when I'm alone at night. Great list. Happy Halloween!
Yikes!
*hugs*

cute column..I have sensor lights at the corner of my house and when they go on at night it sure wakes me up, even though I know it's probably a big dog. Or do I?
Tina,
Ooh, that's a good one.
Hi Jenifer,
Oh yeah, I've had that happen and the gnawing on the wall too. Scary.
Hi Kimberly,
Yeah, that can be unnerving too.
Hi Sandy,
I can see where that would both someone. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Adele,
Thank you.
Yes and especially when your alone it can really bother you.
Hi Darla,
Especially when your alone.
Hi Paige,
Oh, did I scare you?
Hi Jean,
Sensor lights can be creepy too because now you know that something is out there . . .
Janice~
I'll add the sound of delicate valuables crashing to the floor accompanied by a child's cry, "I didn't mean to do it!"

Wind blowing a branch against the house. Well we hope it's a branch. Great list, Janice. I love scary.
Great blog. I always think I hear things when I'm alone. When my kids were growing up they would beg me to take them to the scary movies and i would be the one jumping, screaming, and hiding her eyes. So I try to avoid them at all costs.
I like most of those scary sounds, but then I like horror movies and such. I'm evil.
Hi Kat,
That is too funny. :)
Hi Cassie,
Oh, especially when the branch is scratching the window. That makes a shiver go right down my back.
Hi Lynda,
If I went with you to the horror movies I would be jumping and hiding my face right along with you.
Hi Angel,
I wouldn't call that evil, you just like what you like.
Janice~
that phone ringing in the middle of the night. That is NEVER good news.
Hi Liz,
I've had a few of those and when I hear a phone that late I just get a chill.
Janice~
