I moved in with my son and his family two months ago. Actually, we all moved to a new home, one with plenty of space. Blending the two families has been an interesting exercise as we as very similar so we have a lot of duplicates in music, movies, and especially books. We've got enough books to open a used bookstore (and I should know since I work at one).
But what I really found interesting was sorting through all of our books and finding old gems I'd forgotten I had, new gems I've yet to read, and ones that should have been donated a long time ago.
I also see how my tastes have changed over the years. From the thick romances of the 70's, the classic science fiction, mysteries, to today's blends of these genres with paranormal suspense romances, futuristic romances, urban fantasies, and even historicals with a touch of the eerie.
I love the way the business has evolved to give me everything I want in one book. But I also still read the straight genres. I mix them up so I have something new to look forward to every time I pick up a book. And though my TBR pile is now several shelves, I may still pick up one of those old gems and remind myself why I love reading these old favorites. And why I hauled them around for so many moves.
And yes, I know I could probably find them all for purchase and download to a reader, but then I wouldn't have found the $20.00 stuck between the pages of one! :)

Great post, Vicky. I love looking through old books I'd forgotten I had. Rereading them is a joy and brings me back to the days when I first bought them. :)

There are a few books from my past that are burned into a certain moment in time. When I see the book cover I can clearly remember where I was sitting and how it felt the first time I read it. A few of my 'old" books are old friends I refuse to give up, they are well worth the trouble of storing and moving around.

This hit the spot with me as I'm cleaning out my husband's library. Most of them are scientific books and will go to the proper places. Some of them are ones we enjoyed together. He was a packrat so I've a way to go, but the memories are just great.
Loved your post!I need to sort out my collection. Each time I try to cull one, I'll remember how I felt reading it and usually slip it back into my "keeper" pile. Thanks for reminding me that it had been awhile since I looked through them!

I have been rearranging my bookshelves in the living room to make room for some glass-front curios to keep my antique horses in. I had forgotten that I had a DOUBLE set of hardback Harry Potter books, an entire DOUBLE set of paperback Sherrilyn Kenyons (I bought case lots on eBay and got loads of duplicates)and dozens of historicals/Vikings/paranormals from the 80's through the 90's. I am a pathetic hoarder of books. I think I will go through and cull all the duplicate copies and see that they get a good home.
