Today I'm happy to present an interview of romance author J.D. Faver.

Latest Book: BAD DREAMS

BIO:
J.D. Faver is a Texas author of edgy romantic suspense. The Edge of Texas series is set on the lower coast, close to the border with Mexico. J.D. was an avid catamaran racer and sailed this part of the Gulf frequently. Now, she just kills characters there. Badlands, her other romantic suspense series is set in the Texas Panhandle, just to keep things interesting. Gotta love the cowboys too.

Q: How did you celebrate publishing your first book?
A: I immediately published the next one and the one after that.

Q: Your novel is being made into a TV series/movie. Who’s in your dream cast?
A: I created my character Darla based on Jennifer Garner’s image. I think she would bring Darla’s personality to the big screen very effectively. Since Darla is in all the Edge of Texas books, it would have to be a series. Darla a sheriff’s deputy and trained as a sniper. A lot of things happen to her along the way. While she’s tough and resilient, she’s also beautiful and a mom to twin 4-year-olds. She is a Bailey and the only girl with 7 brothers, so she had to grow up with survival skills.

Q: What’s your writing schedule like? Do you strive for a certain amount of words each day?
A: I wake up and on my way to the shower, I turn on the computer. I think we are bonded. I have been writing every day for the past 5 years. The results have been pretty consistent. I manage to crank out 4 new novels each year without too much stress. I have a small rescue dog and she lets me know when we need to go outside.

Q: What is the most important thing you do for your career now, as compared to when you first started writing?
A: I think I’m doing the most important thing, and that is to keep writing. I love the contact with readers and I feel I have an obligation to write the next in the series and the next after that. I have some stand-alones as well, but if you commit to write a series, you damned well better not disappoint your readers. It thrills me when I’m contacted by readers who want the next book, or they tell me about a character they think deserves their own book. This is an adrenaline shot for a writer. Just like applause to an actor or musician.

Q: How much of yourself is hidden in the characters in the book?
A: A great deal. I do not write heroines who are anything less than kick-butt strong. And that pretty much describes me. I’m an advocate for elderly and disabled individuals, children and animals. Do not piss me off about these issues. I’m a very good shot.

Q: Of all your characters, who’s your favorite, and why?
A: I have a lot of favorites, but Rafael, the hero of my Edge of Texas series, seems to resonate the strongest to readers too. I could definitely stay in love/lust with him. Rafael is the sheriff and he is a ‘boy scout’ in most ways, as he always tries to do the right thing. But he admits to being possessive and having a jealous streak where Chloe is concerned. Do not mess with the big guy.

Q: Do you eat comfort food/listen to music when writing?
A: When writing sex scenes I have to seduce myself. I listen to blues (BB King, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughan) and I also dance. One of my favorites to dance to is, “I said I loved you but I lied”.

Q: Have you ever used an incident from your real life into one of your books?
A: Oh, yes. Many times. Places I have lived and events in my life are chronicled in all my books.

Q: Out of your entire backlist, which book has the best opening line? What's the line?
A: These are my favorites. You can choose. “She’s going to blow me...” Mike glanced over his shoulder. He lowered his voice, aware that he’d been shouting into his cell phone. BAD VIBES (Edge of Texas-3)

“This is not a date!” Her stilettos paced a tempo on the hardwood floor, echoing throughout his sparsely furnished bachelor apartment. BAD GIRL!

“You cannot go. I absolutely forbid it.” Breckenridge T. Ryan gazed at his bride of less than two months with an uncompromising glare. He rolled his eyes when he caught her amused expression. THE RELUCTANT RANCHER (Badlands-2)

Facts of life...Not all babies are cute. Not all elderly people are sweet. And not all brides are beautiful. KILL SHOT.

Q: How many stories are swirling around in your head? Do you keep a mental list, a computer file, or a spiral notebook filled with the ideas?
A: Sadly, I looked in my WIP file and counted 25 different unfinished projects. The good news is I consistently finish 4 novels per year. The bad news is, before I finish one, there are 2 new ideas struggling to escape my brain. But I may not be married to all the works in progress. Maybe I’m just dating them…toying with their affections.

Fun Stuff:
Q: What is your favorite holiday and why?
A: I love Christmas because that is a family gathering time and I love to bake and feed people I love. I’m a huge fan of Halloween also. I have a great witch costume and a devil costume, as well as a pumpkin costume for me and my two granddaughters (they have since outgrown them).

Q: What are two things people might be surprised to know about you?
A: I was the girl singer in a band/orchestra and I’m still a very good shot. The two don’t necessarily go together.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: I wanted to be an actress. I majored in Drama in college and then figured out I would make a lousy waitress so I changed my major.

Q: Favorite food.
A: Many: Lobster, crab, avocado, fresh asparagus, chocolate anything.

Q: Favorite happy memory.
A: Every time I get together with family and friends, I’m rewarded with a slew of happy memories. Couldn’t pick just one.

Q: Favorite drink.
A: Coke, the breakfast of champions.

Q: Hot summer days or chilly winter nights?
A: Living in coastal Texas, I can’t remember what chilly winter nights feel like, so I will go with hot summer days. We have a lot of those.

Q: What is the top thing on your bucket list?
A: To plant all my fruit trees on our land in the Hill Country of Texas and see my grandchildren harvest the fruit.

Q: If you could have a super power, what would it be?
A: I would live forever so I can crank out all the stories in my head. Immortality would suit me fine.

BLURB:
When Chloe falls in love with an old Victorian, she convinces Rafael to buy her dream house. She envisions their children playing on the extensive grounds and harvesting fruit from the long-neglected citrus orchard. Undisturbed for decades, ghosts begin speaking to her. Now, with renovations underway, the house begins to divulge its secrets. Who knows where the bodies are buried?

Meanwhile, Rafael and his team of deputies are busy trying to protect the community from a ruthless home invasion gang. The lower Texas coast is at risk on more than one plane, as the robbers target area citizens and tortured spirits are torturing the ones he loves.

Rock-solid and down to earth, Rafael is hard-pressed to accept the whole ghost thing, much less the measures Chloe takes to combat the spirits, but she goes into full battle mode, enlisting the assistance of a curandera to help her vanquish supernatural evil and release her young daughter from their possession.

EXCERPT: Set-up:
This is from the first night Chloe and Rafael spend in the old Victorian house they purchased and is in the process of being remodeled. Rafael is not completely in love with the house, but she is determined to win him over. She has fixed up the turret room for her grand seduction.

"Don't you just love this room?" she persisted.

He nodded. "Better than the rest of the house. But it smells of dust and something else."

"Bleach. I wiped down the hard surfaces with bleach water."

"Yeah, that’s romantic."

She stretched up to plant a kiss on his mouth. "It will be. Please stop grousing. I love this place."

He expelled a deep breath. "I know, and I love you." He lifted her onto the bed and sank down beside her. "I just wish you had fallen in love with a brand new place that had functional central air conditioning."

"Buzz kill."

"Brat!"

She laughed and he kissed her mouth...kissed it so well, she forgot about defending her house. She fumbled with his uniform shirt, wanting his skin touching hers. "Why don't they design these uniforms with Velcro?"

His face split into a wide grin. "Because then I would be Rafael Solis, the stripper and not the sheriff."

"I want stripper Raffy, so get these clothes off now."

He guffawed and removed his holstered gun and the handcuffs looped through his utility belt. He placed them on the floor beside the bed and began unbuttoning his shirt cuff.

Chloe rolled onto her back with her arms flung overhead, draping off the side of the bed. She had wanted Raffy to love the house as much as she did, but he wasn't there yet. He did love the five acre home site with the orchards and other lush trees. He could envision his children having lots of space to roam and play.

A strong breeze blew through the open windows, cooled by the water in the bay. The sheer curtains she’d rushed to install undulated like frenzied dancers. This could be so nice. She wanted their first night in their soon-to-be home to be a memorable experience. She turned her gaze back to her husband, admiring his handsome features as he worked open the buttons of his starched uniform shirt.

She ran her hand over his chest, lightly caressing his muscled torso. Work of art. "I love you," she whispered.

"I love you more." He tossed the shirt to the floor beside the bed. He pulled off his boots and dropped his pants.

Chloe reached up for him and he slid into her arms.

Rafael was a big man. Strong, but gentle. He swept her long hair out of the way and arranged himself over her, resting his weight on his forearms. He held himself above her, teasing her with his nearness. Tantalizing her with his languor. He definitely knew how to take his time.

She arched up to graze his chest, writhing against him.

He made a contented sound. Something between a hum and a groan.

Yes, I want to torture you, Mr. slow and easy. She ran her fingertips over his sides, softly scraping his muscled flesh with her short nails.

He captured her face in his hands and gazed into her eyes for a moment before lowering his head. He brushed his mouth over hers, nuzzling her lips before kissing her, gently at first and then deeper. His kiss set fire to something inside her, like striking a match to dry kindling.

She arched up again wrapping her arms and legs around his torso, lifting herself to rub against his hardness.

Rafael pressed her down onto the bed, using his weight to anchor her. He trailed kisses down the side of her neck, onto her shoulder. Cupping a breast in his hand, he teased it with his mouth, circling her nipple with his tongue before suckling it.

Chloe raked her fingers through his thick hair, offering herself up for his torment.

Mi preciosa,” he murmured in her ear, sending tiny prickles down her neck.

She grazed his shoulders with her teeth, ran her tongue along the line of his collar bone to his neck. “Oh, Raffy, I’m so happy to be spending our first night here.”

“Yeah? Well get ready for ecstasy, because I’m going to take you there.”

J.D., it's really great to get to know you. You're the kind of woman I wish I could be, but am not. I might have been when I was a lot younger.

Your stories sound wonderful.

That indeed was a great interview and your answers underscore your inner strength. Immortality is a fine selection and one I'd select as my first choice and for the same reason...to write all the books floating around in my head! Unfortunately, at my age and with my commitments, I can't spend the time I'd like to writing novels. Best wishes with your books!

Ah, J.D. :) I loved it all. It's a great interview, gal :) I have to say, the opening line for Bad Vibes caught me right off : “She’s going to blow me...” Mike glanced over his shoulder. He lowered his voice, aware that he’d been shouting into his cell phone. BAD VIBES (Edge of Texas-3)

Excellent! :)
I also enjoyed learning that for your bucket list, the planting of fruit trees and watching your grandchildren harvest the fruit was the most desired thing. Simply eloquent in clarifying one of the most important things in life.
Thank you for sharing another view of yourself with us :) Lo

What a terrific interview! I love the line about life lessons the best. sometimes we just have to shake up those pre-conceived notions because they're just not true!
You're an inspiration in discipline and diligence.

Great interview. I love your "kick butt" heroines. Strong women make for the best characters. I see that your acting background probably helps you get into your characters better!
