Do you like historicals?

Do you like historicals as well as I do? I hope so, since I’ve just written the second of my career. Although my other books where I can let my imagination free are more fun in a way, I love doing the research, which is extensive. You have to check and recheck every detail, as you can be assured some readers out there are experts on time period you’re writing in. Both of mine are set in Regency England about the time of Waterloo. Spies and Roses was just released by MuseItUp publishing, and I’m so pleased. Lots of work, but it was worth it to me to see my characters come to life in another world. Here's an excerpt. Do tell me how you like it !!!!!! She might be a neophyte in the matter of love, but she knew exactly what to do. She would do to him what so pleasured her. Josh still lay on his back, and she reached over and unbuttoning his shirt, slid her hand inside, walking her fingers through the crisp dark hairs she admired. She found a nipple and began to caress it as he had hers, circling it with her fingers as it instantly hardened. He shot up, sitting and glaring at her. “Sara, you idiotic minx! Do you have any idea what you are doing? I am not a stone statue, you know.” His voice was so indignant she laughed. “I sincerely hope you are not, my lord Josh,” she said in as low and alluring a voice as she could summon. “I am trying to seduce you, in case you’re too dense to understand.” She leaned over and slowly kissed his nipple, laving it with her tongue. He almost came off the bed. “You wanted me to come to you, milord. With desire. Does this show enough desire to qualify?” With a low groan, he clutched her to him, kissing her face and hair with wild abandon. “I think it will do very well, my love.” He gasped. “Are you sure, Sara? Really and truly sure?” She could feel the heat in her own voice as she answered him. “I want to be your wife, Josh. Please show me how.” She watched in wonder as his face glowed. With those few words she hoped she’d conveyed how much she wanted him and also how new this feeling was to her. He’d surely take her to places she’d never imagined, but she thought he’d do it with consideration, even perhaps with some sort of love. His blazing smile showed her all the love she could hope for in his heart. Rejoicing, she stood and let him do what he willed. “We must first get these ridiculous clothes off. I would have you naked as soon as possible, my own love. If you’d stand just for a moment, I could start.” Josh stood still and let his eyes rove over his beautiful wife. He lifted her to her feet and knelt beside her, reaching under her skirt to her hose and garters. She gasped at the invasion. Then she chuckled and boldly leaned down to step out of her shoes and help him roll down her stockings. It became a wicked game as he unbuttoned her dress and shrugged it off her, and she then stepped seductively out of her petticoats. As she stood before him, clad only in her thin chemise, she suddenly blushed and stopped, trying to cover her breasts with her hands. “No, no, my love. You’re beautiful beyond belief. Let me help you with this last bit.” He reverently put his hands on the straps of her chemise and slowly pulled it down, kissing every inch of her flesh as he exposed it. She reveled in his caresses, clutching his hair in his hands, as his lips moved lower and he kissed and laved her navel with his tongue. As he neared the thatch of tawny curls between her legs she tried again to cover herself. Beyond speech, he knelt and gently set aside her hands and kissed her mound, nuzzling her to inhale more of her scent, so feminine and so unquestionably Sara. Her aroma was hers alone, lilacs and Sara and the sexual heat he’d aroused. She set him aflame. “Josh.” She gasped. “Should you be doing that? It makes me feel so, so wanton!” “Exactly how I want you, love,” he said. He rose and began to strip off his clothes, never taking his eyes from her, his eyes adoring every inch. She was his dream of perfection, lithe and slender, with long, long legs and provocatively rounded hips. In all his fantasies he’d never imagined the glory that was Sara.

Jean, congratulations on your historical. It sounds very interesting and is a departure from your prior works. The closest I've come to writing a historical is a post WWII novel set in Sicily (I guess that's "historical"). I can imagine how hard it must be to research and get the details you need. I've got the bug to tackle a novel that takes place in Rhodes during the crusades. Ann

Hey, Jean - I've always loved historicals. "Shanna" by Kathleen Woodiwiss is still one of my favs. I've tackled historicals too and have had a few pubbed. However, I found them murder to write because of the dated dialogue. You don't want it to sound stilted, but it has to sound accurate. Striking a perfect balance is a definite challenge.

Your book sounds wonderful. Here's to a zillion sales! :)

Love the cover, and if the rest of the book is as great as this excerpt, then you've got a real winner on your hands.

Big congrats, Jean!
